Time Capsule 50 Device Limit Question/Help

I have a Time Capsule and I understand they are limited to 50 devices.  Well, I must have reached my 50 device limit, because I can not connect any additonal devices.  How do I go about deleting past devices so newer devices can connect?  I've done a reset, but that does not do it.

A full factory reset will.
The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Set the dhcp server time to 20min.. that will quickly recover the IP of any device that is no longer connected.
A gen3 TC btw is more than 3years old now.. mostly.. and will be unreliable.. it needs replacement.. they are not long life devices.

What is a maximum remoteness between time capsule and device for having a good wifi signal?

In open air.. line of sight you should work very well over 100M and most likely still work at 200M.
Unfortunately in houses.. there is almost no way to tell. But you can assume signal on 5ghz will dimish very rapidly.. 2 or 3 walls/floors/major obstacles and nothing left.. 2.4ghz should manage your whole house but you might find signal in far corners unusable.  Count the number of walls, floors/ceilings it is going through in a straight path, router to client. You can think of it as a 4" pipe.. and even the angles are important.. if it hits a wall made of brick at acute angle it is twice as thick as hitting it dead on. Mirrors, tinted glass are metal reflectors.. reinforced concrete is both a reflector with metal bars and absorber with concrete.. add a bit of moisture content and it is a great block.

  • 2nd generation time capsule: how to limit access to wireless network at night?

I am using a 2nd generation time capsule and need to limit access to my wireless network at night, is there a setting to do this?  I don't want to physically have to shut down my time capsule/router every night but I need a way to turn off the wireless network at night or during specific hours.  Also open to suggestions on how to accomplish this if Time Capsule does not allow it.    This question is for a 2nd generation 500GB, Model A1302 Time Capsule.  Thank you.

Unless you physically attach an electronic timer to the Time Capsule, there is no way to tell the Time Capsule when to turn on and off.
Using the Timed Access settings in AirPort Utility, it is possible to define the hours each day that wireless devices will be allowed to  connect to the network.
For example, you might set the Time Capsule to not allow wireless access between Midnight and 8 AM each day. Devices would be able to connect at other times.
But, Timed Access will not physically power the Time Capsule "on" and "off".

  • Airport Express (g version) & Time Capsule (n version) integration question

I currently have an Airport Express (g version). When I add my new Time Capsule (with n), will my iMac Intel duo (with n), pick the wireless feed from the Time Capsule or the slower Airport Express? Is there some way to designate the Time Capsule? And in this mix, I have a 12" Powerbook.

It's not the actual posted speeds that limit the speed of a network, but the technology with which the devices are connecting. So, an 802.11n network will be dragged down to 802.11g speeds if an 802.11g client joins. Whether or not this client is getting the full 54 Mbps out of the connection, other n clients joining the network will be at 802.11g speeds. They may be getting the full 54 Mbps even if the g client is getting, let's say, 48 Mbps out of his connection. This is because the 802.11n router has to go down to the lowest common denominator (802.11g) for all connected devices to work.
As for your initial question, I'd highly suggest setting your Time Capsule to 802.11n only 5 GHz as the main router, and hardwire your Express having it set up as an 802.11b/g bridge for b/g devices. This means your n devices get n speeds and g devices don't slow things down. This is called a dual band setup, and each band will have it's own unique SSID, so n devices can't "accidentally" switch over to the b/g network, or vice versa.

  • Time Capsule With Windows 7 Please Help Going Round in Circles!

    Hi
have just got a 1Tb time capsule for Xmas. I have a 13" Macbook unibody and have installed the time machine and airport utility through this, thinking apple computer + apple time capsule will be easier. All went well and the Macbook sees the Drive and has backed itself up nicely. So very pleased.
Then the problem i have a windows 7 machine and went off and installed the airport utility on the machine. All went fine, but i cant see the HDD, i can see it in network places but all i can do is read it, i can't write to it from my windows machine. Have looked at loads of posts about mapping drives making sure latest firmware (7.5) etc but am totally lost as i read so many different things that i just ended up going round in circles!
What i wanted to do was put all my media, documents and pics on the TC and allow both machines to share from it and use it. But no matter what i try it seems i can only write to it from the mac. I have seen in the airport utility on the windows machine under disks (after selecting manual setup)> file sharing that the secure shared disks is set to "with device password", now i have the passwords, i just cant seem to see where i can see that drive in windows and where to enter the password!!! Should that be set to something else? File sharing is enabled.I assumed once i had installed the airport utility on the windows machine the HDD would just pop up in my computer or something like it popped up easily on the mac! Or am i being stupid and it doesnt work like that?
The windows machine is connected via ethernet and the mac is wireless.
Please can someone help as its driving me mad and i just cant seem to figure it out. Am not that computer savvy when it comes to things like this and am probably missing something really stupid but you know what its like when you have stared at something for hours. Any help would be most appreciated or SIMPLE guide or something
Many thanks in advance and happy Xmas to you all

Just an update to the above i can now no longer see the time capsule in network places!! All i have done is retstarted!!! I can still see the time capsule from my mac and access it!!!

  • Time capsule & airport express settings! HELP!!

    Hi guys,
Would really appreciate some help. I have been running a time capsule with various devices and all has been going well. However there was an area of the house which the time capsule wifi couldnt reach so I bought an Airport Express to extend the network.
In Airport Utility, the Time Capsule has an error saying "conflicting DCHP range" and an error beside the Airport Express saying "Device not found." Ironically both devices are working (at the minute).
This is drivng me mental, if somebody could let me know what settings the two devices should be on regarding, DHCP, NAT and Bridge mode I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

  • Another Time Capsule + Airport Express (G) question

Searched through the forums but could not find an answer -- so here goes.
    I have:
    - Time Capsule
    - older Airport Express (B/G, not N)
    - MacBook Air
    - iPhone
    - Wii
    I would like to:
    - Connect my cable modem to my Time Capsule, and have the Time Capsule run exclusively on N at 5ghz
    - Use my Airport Express to stream music to my receiver AND be the base station for B/G devices on my network, such as the iPhone and Wii. The Airport Express sits right next to the Time Capsule, so they can be connected with an Ethernet cable (need be)
With those goals mentioned, how do I set this up? I don't want to get the MBAir to fall back on G, as it is doing now.
Thank you much for your help.

Yes that will work. It has been referred to many, many posts as "dual-band" networks.
Configure the Time Capsule and AirPort Express (AX) to have different SSIDs (network names) and different encryption passwords. Don't tell your MacBook Air the password of the slower network.
Configure the AX to act as a bridge (not sharing a single IP address).

  • Setting up network with ATT Uverse, Time Capsule, and Airport Extreme..HELP

    PLEASE HELP!
I have ATT U-Verse which provides their own router. My Time Capsule is connected to the router (in the living room) via an Ethernet cable and has been working fine, and is set up like this:
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network (I joined the ATT network 2wire)
    Network name: 2wirexyz
    Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Channel: 5
    Connect Using: Wireless Network
When I try to add my Airport Extreme (for wireless printing in the office) by adding it to the same network (I've also tried to extend the network option) the Airport Utility thinks forever then comes up with an error and the Airport continues to flash amber. I've tried resetting the Extreme multiple times and configuring different ways but same result.
What am I doing wrong?? Please help, my wife is giving me grief for not being able to print wirelessly from her MacBook!!
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me!

    Thank you Tessarax....
So does that mean I need to create a separate wireless network? I apologize, I'm not extremely familiar with how to complete what you've suggested. I know I've seen the bridge mentioned before in the Airport Utility when I've been trying different things. Would you mind giving me some more specific instructions please? Actually I just tried messing around with Airport Utility, let me know if I'm headed in the right direction:
For TC wireless mode I want to "Participate in a WDS network"?
Then where does my WDS remote come from? is that the Airport Extreme? I've plugged in the AEBS but it's not showing up in the Airport Utility...
I'll mess around with it some more tomorrow morning. Thanks I'll let you know how it goes.

  • Time Capsule Died, Data Recovery Question

Hello, I have either the 1st or 2nd generation Time Capsule which just recently died.  Since this is my backup drive, I will need to get the data out of this.  The tech specs say its a serial-ATA server grade Hard Drive.   What kind of case do I need to remove the drive from the capsule and put it into a case so that I can successfully transfer data?
Would a 3.5 SATA case work?   Is it something else?   I've read about the repairs on these things, but am not interesting in soddering.
    Much help would be appreciated.

Just go into a big computer shop or order it from ebay.. you just need the usb to sata cable and a power supply.. they sell it in a box for about $10. You only need it in a case holder if you intend to keep it that way.
There are neat desk docking units you can buy where you drop the hard drive in the slot. A bit more than the bare cable.. easy peasy though.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-2-5-3-5-SATA-IDE-Dual-HDD-Hard-Disk-Drive-Dock-Do cking-Station-HUB-Reader-/170926246068?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item27cbff88b 4&_uhb=1
Just type usb sata dock or holder or cradle into ebay.. and about 20,000 options will leap up at you.
The drive in the TC is 3.5" standard sata. Don't take the server drive too seriously.. that is the one and only 500GB seagate in the original Gen1.
To fix the TC you do not need to solder in parts yourself.. there is a list of people who can help you.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repairers
    And kits available.. https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/time-capsule-power-supply-repair-kits
The units are a drop in replacement.. but change the TC from AC powered to DC powered.

  • Can I use an external drive for a 2nd time capsule backup?  Other questions too

    My setup:
    1 Macbook Air
    1 Mac mini as HTPC
1 Mac mini as a media server (5tb and growing) with external drives.
I want to get a 2tb time capsule to back up my laptop and mac mini that i use as a HTPC.  Simple enough....
Since the new gen airport extremes support external drives to a time machine back up i want to plug a CineRAID device with 4 6TB drives (12gb of storage in a RAID) and use that as a backup for my media server.  Could I just plug it directly into the mac mini?  Yes, but i am trying to have the lest amount of clutter possible visible. So i want to put in a closet where my router is..
So can I plug in the CineRAID into the usb port for a 2nd time machine backup with massive storage?
    Option 2:
Just get an airport extreme and use the CineRAID for a backup via USB...
Also,  how much space does the airport extreme support?  Like i said up time I am at 5tb but its growing fast

So can I plug in the CineRAID into the usb port for a 2nd time machine backup with massive storage?
There is conflicting advice about whether a RAID setup will work with Time Machine, so you can find information that will say that it will work and other info that will say that it will not. In general, Apple says that Time Machine must "see" the RAID drive as a single partition, but they also say that you need to check with the support folks at the drive manufacturer for more details.
The only way that you will know whether it will work or not on your network, is try it out on your network.
Please let us know about your results.
Just get an airport extreme and use the CineRAID for a backup via USB...
    Same as above.
how much space does the airport extreme support?
The firmware on an AirPort Extreme will support up to a 4 TB drive, but I have not tried it on a larger drive, so we'll need another user to answer on that one. Here again, it would be wise to try a few "tests" before you try to backup or transfer a large amount of data.

  • Does *new* Time Capsule let you limit bandwidth on guest connection?

I'm curious to know if the new dual-band Time Capsule/AEBS will let you limit bandwidth on the guest connection, or if it will suck up all the available bandwidth without restrictions?

I would say No to this. Apple wouldn't care much about bandwidth issue but I must admit that could be nice option to play with. But you never know.

  • IMac - Time Capsule - TV (network bottleneck question)

I have a wireless Time Capsule being used as an external HD in addition to the Time Machine. The HD is housing my iTunes Library and I'm using it to house movies, music, etc. My question has to do with the way the media will transfer and if there's a bottleneck.
My iMac is on 802.11G talking to the Time Capsule as the wireless access point. My TV is hardwired to the TC via Ethernet. So, when TV requests media from iTunes on my iMac that it doesn't have synched, will the TV be able to get the media directly from the library on the TC (hardwired) or is there a bottleneck with the wireless iMac?
    Hope this makes sense,

    Winston Churchill wrote:
some will tell you it will go TC > itunes > TC > tv, it may well do but I haven't seen any conclusive evidence of this one way or another.
I'm convinced that for streaming, data is pulled from wherever it's stored (local drive, TC, USB drive etc) by iTunes them streamed to AppleTV across the network.
If this was not the case then there would be no need for itunes to be running in order to stream.
The local drive, USB drive, TC etc cannot actively push data to AppleTV as it is not a server (iTunes behaves as one for AppleTV), and equally if AppleTV could access the files directly just by knowing their locations you wouldn't need to run iTunes except to update AppleTV's list of where thing were and to sync etc.

  • Mounting Time Capsule drive - total newbie question

I'm a total Mac newbiew, so please bear with me.
There are alot of threads in this forum that talk about 'manually mounting' a time capsule drive. What is this manual mounting, what's the point of doing it, and how do you do it?
My Time Capsule shows up under the Shared menu in Finder and I can access it from there. Is access to the disk via this link slower than mounting it or something?
Lastly, my TC is connected to my Mac Mini via an ethernet cable. How can I check that the Mac is talking to the TC disk via this connection rather than over the wireless network that the TC is providing?

By "mounting" people are meaning seeing the Time Machine disk icon actually showing on the desktop. I can only think of 2 reasons for this, 1) time saving if people use the disk for other purposes as well as Time Machine and need to access it regularly, and 2) If it mounts, it proves you have connectivity.
Doing it from the finder sidebar is effectively the same thing, only you are doing it instead of getting the system to do it. Your initial access to the drive may be noticeably slower for a couple of seconds until it mounts is all, nothing worth worrying about
See here for more info if you are interested in mounting it automatically:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1446928
As for your last question, unless your wireless and wired connection talk to different networks, then turn off your wireless and used the wired connection.
