Time Capsule 500GB (2nd Gen) won't power up -- is it dead?

Would appreciate some guidance on this issue as I'm curious if this is (A.) known issue; and if so (B.) how to fix if fixable.
BACKGROUND
Two days ago in the midst of a full backup to my 2nd gen 500GB TC, AirPort Utility started to warn me that device was overheating.  Was about 5GB into a 300+GB backup at that point.  I quickly clicked to end backup, and unplugged 3 cables (ethernet to computer; ethernet to modem; and power cord).  Once cooled down (slightly warm but not cold start), I started over but nothing happened.  No amber light.  Nothing.  Waited a day and tried again, this time amber light came one for  a few seconds and then same thing: nothing, light switched off.
Note, prior to all of this, I wiped drive clean as I hadn't used it in a few months.  Was backing up to another drive and using TC as router only.  Switched backup drives when TC started giving problems saying it had no more space.  My iMac had less than 300GB at the time, but somehow TC instead of doing incremental backups as it is supposed to, started stacking one full backup on top of another (hence no space given TC = 500GB).
So a couple of days ago, I thought I'd wipe it clean then do fresh full backup and use TimeMachine to backup to both drives (didn't know it could do alternating drive backups before).  That's when problem above occurred.
Questions (would sincerely appreciate any help those w/ experience + knowledge on this can offer)
Can my TC be saved or am I looking at a new TC purchase?
If not & replacement is required, are TCs in fact reliable backup drives?  Have read a few reports of people complaining of TCs dying inexplicably after 3 or 4 years.  Mine is about 4yrs old.  I loved simplicity of 2-in-1 device coupled w/ Macs legendary ease-of-use.

Repairs to the TC and replacing the hard drive (which is 5+ years old, so it should be replaced as well) will likely cost more than the cost of a new TC with 2 TB of storage and a new warranty.

Not really, as Apple uses inexpensive drives in the TC to keep the costs down. The drive is described in the literature as "server grade".  It's not.

3-4 years is about all that you can expect. Most of the 1st Generation TCs failed at 18-24 months due to poor power supply design.

That is the strong point on the TC.

  • I have a 2nd gen airport extreme (no time capsule) and 2nd gen airport expresses:  is there any new additons I can make to my existing network to improve reach and integrity of signal?

I have the older airport extreme and 2 2nd gen airport expresses in a large house.  Lately I have been getting complaints about internet  "drop out" and weak signal (orange signal - weak network)  in one (oddly enough the nearest one to my extreme).  What can I do to insure network and internet integrity going forward. Do I buy a new a. extreme and convert the old one (how is also a question)?  Do I buy new expresses?  (and why) Do I move the original express out of room and get longer internet cable?  Extreme is upstairs in a split level and must remain there because of proximity to modem and its connection to security. The "working" express is all the way on the other side of the house through 2 concrete walls and does ok - though signal is understandable week. The nearer one with the "problems" is at the foot of the stairs less than 50 feet away, behind an always closed door  (not tested-belongs to teenager voicing complaints).  Incidentally the other bedroom directly across from the closed door one, houses a temporary adult child at home who has no problems with their lap top (2nd gen macbook) and signal.

There is no easy answer to your question, but here are some things to think about.
The newest generation of airport extremes and expresses are dual-band devices. they transmit on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. the 2.4 GHz frequency penetrates walls better than the 5 GHz frequency which is faster in terms of data throughput. they also have improved antennas which may help your signal problems. unfortunately the only way to be sure would be trial and error you can also walk around with a laptop and monitor the signal strength to see where you have dropouts and consider repositioning your express devices to compensate .

I set up a new airport time capsule. Most devices connected fine however now my apple tv 2nd gen won't work. I turn it on and it searches for time and date but goes no further. I can't by pass it either. Any suggestions?

Does that mean you cannot move it to the TC and plug in by ethernet? What does bypass mean?
I would still move it closer to the TC.. and just trial it there. Range on some AC models for 2.4ghz is worse than old one. For some people.
Another thing to try is fixed wireless channels.. one of the very few options still available in the AC model.. lock the 2.4ghz to 11, 6, 1 .. try it in that order.

  • Time Capsule 500gb Help! Trying to set up

I just received a Time Capsule 500Gb model # MB764LL/A It should be working with my iBook G4 which is running on OX 10.5.8 and has the Time Machine software. I am connected wirelessly with the flying saucer Airport Extreme Base Station. I printed out the instructions which seem pretty easy except I do not have the 'set up' CD but my Airport Utility is 5.4.2 so thats current. I have 14 days to return this item and I don't think its broken, I just could be missing something. How important is the Cd? Thanks for any help in advance!!!!

There are a few steps to take when this happens.
Disconnect the ethernet cable from your computer to the TC for a moment and power down your computer.
Make sure the TC is powered up and then hold in the reset button until the amber light begins to blink quickly. Hold a few more seconds, then release the reset button.
Now connect the ethernet cable again and restart your computer to see if that helps.
If that does not do the trick, the next step is to try a Factory Default Reset as follows:
Power down your computer, etc as above.
Pull the AC power plug from the TC
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in as you plug the AC plug back in
Release the reset button after 10 seconds
This is a bit tricky to do and you almost need 3 hands.
Then connect the ethernet cable and power your computer back up, etc.

  • Time Capsule 500GB MB276

What is difference between Time Capsule 500GB MB276LL/A and Time Capsule 500GB MB276Z/A?
Or... what is difference between "LL/A" and "Z/A"? What is the meaning of these letters?

    They are different markets.
    LL/A is US
    Z/A is UK (I think).
The actual difference is settings for wireless.. nothing else is different. The US model cannot be set for UK wireless region.. therefore it misses out on channels 12 and 13 for 2.4ghz for example. The UK model cannot be set to US.. so it always has 12, 13 when it should not use them. Power output can be different as each country has their own regs. Although in practice either can be used in either country without too much problems.
Once the region is set at the factory it cannot be changed. Apple do not provide a service to change it.. although it is actually possible but requires a serial console.
Apple regionalize their products and they are not supposed to be sold in other areas of the world.

  • Why does wireless on my Time Capsule (2TB, 3rd Gen) drop the wireless network now?

Starting a couple of weeks ago, my Apple Time Capsule (2TB, 3rd Gen) has been dropping the wireless network almost daily.  I end up pulling the power cord to restart it.  I've had the device for what I think has to be about a year and a half already, and it's been working flawlessly until now.  I have it on 802.11N (dual-band), using WPA2, with an average of about 7-8 client devices at any one time throughout our home.  The problem doesn't appear to be any one client, since all lose connectivity at the very same time.  The Time Capsule LED is still green when it's down, and again restarting it solves the problem.  The device is out in a well ventilated area, and doesn't feel like its overheating.  Devices using Ethernet to connect are unaffected (other than losing visibility to wireless network elements).  It can occurn at any time, day or night, seemingly at random.  The Airport Utilty advises that I have the latest firmware version (7.5.2).
Anyone have any idea whats going on?  Having similar problems?  Fix, workaround, suggestion?

Try setting the wireless to manual and fixed channels.. the auto channel swapping does cause issues.. I would also give different names to 2.4ghz and 5ghz so you know clearly which wireless you are connected to.
But sometimes they do just go bad.. power supply is not robust. They do become unreliable.

    - Have you tried when connected to other networks?  Maybe the router is blocking the ports used by Safari and the other apps.
    - What kind of network are you using? a personel or bussines?

  • HT3728 Time Capsule turned "off" and won't turn back "on"

My Time Capsule shut down last night--completely turned off--and won't turn back on. It felt warm, so I unplugged it overnight. I tried plugging it back in this morning and it still doesn't have power. I've also tried plugging it in somewhere else, and the hard reset as described on the Apple Support Website. But still no power. The green/amber light doesn't come on at all. Suggestions?

the power supply is cooked in its own internal oven bag..
It sounds like it is beyond warranty but if you have applecare on a Mac that will also cover the TC if it was purchased within 2years of the computer..
Otherwise a self - repair is possible or help from a repairer if you happen to live in an area.. to Apple it is a sealed unit and they will not help you.

  • Ipod toch 2nd gen won't turn on?

    Hi there,
Probably a stupid question but my ipod touch (2nd gen 8gb) won't turn on all of a sudden.
I tunes doesn't see it and the screen is black, nothing doing at all.
I know it's probably the logic board or something but i thought i'd ask and see if anyone has a wnder fix!
    Thanks

Lithium-ion batteries, if left in a completely discharged state for an extended period, can become unable to hold a charge.  That 2nd gen shuffle has been sitting in its unopened box for about five or six years.  If that's the case here, it  operates fine while getting power from the USB port, and appears to charge, but it is unable to hold that charge when disconnected from power.  Therefore, nothing happens when you move the power switch.  Here is a document from Apple about batteries
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipods.html
    (see Long Term Storage section)
You can try doing a Restore on the shuffle in iTunes, in case the problem is related to software.  The Restore button is on the shuffle's Settings screen, when it is selected in iTunes.

  • My Ipod Shuffle 2nd gen won't update!

I'm having trouble with my Ipod shuffle 2nd gen. Every time I try to update it, it won't update. And when I try to charge it, it will only charge when I'm not using Itunes. I really need my shuffle right now this month because I'm going on important trips and I don't mind listening to the same songs I already have on it but I really would like to have this problem fixed. I barerly got my shuffle 2 months ago, is there anyways I can return it for another one?! Please help!

How do you know if won't charge with itunes open? The USB port should be charging unless the PC is off, regardless of what software is running. But if that is the case, eject the ipod and close itunes.
You don't state whether you get any error messages. Does in give you a message the its syncing then finish and no songs transferred? Have you checked your settings on what library (music) it is being filled from?

  • Ipod shuffle 2nd gen won't work, light flashing green and orange

My 2nd gen ipod shuffle won't work and the light is flashing green and orange.  Or green, orange, orange, orange.  I've Reset, Restarted, Restored and Re-installed, so before I chuck it out I wondered if there were any other suggestions to get it working?  Thanks,

Sounds like it's still under warranty (one year). Take it back for replacement.
