Time Capsule (5th Gen) - 2.4GHz Issues

Hi,
Strange behavior with my Time Capsule 5th Gen:
I was having issues with my iOS devices dropping off of the 2.4GHz network, so I created a separately named 5GHz wireless network which works fine.
However, now I am seeing that my iOS devices (and iMac) can no longer connect to the 2.4GHz network at all.
When I try to connect, one of the following things will happen on my iOS devices:
- "Incorrect Password" error message (when I know the password I entered is indeed correct)
- Password request will keep popping up after entering the password over and over again
- "Unable to join network" error message
- Device will ignore attempt to connect to the 2.4GHz network and instead automatically connects to the 5GHz network
I have done the following to troubleshoot:
On iOS devices:
- Reset network settings
- "Forget" the wireless networks
- Reboot
On my Time Capsule:
- Factory Reset and rebuilt my configs from scratch
- Reboot
On my iMac:
- Verified only one other 2.4GHz wireless network nearby, and with a weak signal
I can use the 5GHz just fine, but it drives me crazy that I cannot get the 2.4GHz wireless capability to work properly.
Is my Time Capsule defective? Don't know what else to try....
Thanks,
Kevin

It's out of warranty (purchased October 2013) and I didn't buy the AppleCare (I find I usually don't use extended warranties).
Having said that, I've done another factory reset and reconfiguration and it appears to be working (at least for now).
If this is temporary, I'll just need to purchase a new one.
The AC model seems to be unreliable for a lot of people..
But there is a way to get applecare .. If nothing you have already purchased is less than 12months old you can still buy an Apple TV.
I wrote this up sometime ago so let me just paste it in.
If the TC is less than 2years old, buy an Apple TV and buy applecare for it. Do not unwrap the ATV .. you can sell it on ebay unopened.
If you already own an ATV less than 12months old or a computer you can still qualify for AppleCare, then buy it.. The rule is the peripheral item must be purchased within 2 years of the item under applecare.
So the total warranty is 3years; same as any computer you buy.
iPad or iPod applecare does not cover a TC.. ATV does.
Then get Apple to replace your TC as part of the AppleCare.. This seems to be the best solution. Please double check with Apple staff in the store..
See if they consider 12month warranty adequate.. if they refuse to help you because you are 366 days into the purchase.. ask if I buy ATV with AppleCare will it cover the TC.
Please relate your experiences on the apple discussions post.. as I think it helpful to share this around.
In Australia at least the AppleCare for Apple TV is $35 which makes it cheap.. you can also buy applecare on a refurbished ATV so you might not even need to pay full price for it.. if you don't need it just sell it.
Then exercise the warranty. The T&C clearly covers the Airport (which includes the TC). for up to two years before purchase and then within the applecare period.

Running the devices on different bands may actually be a work around but something is causing issues.
Try setting a fixed channel on your 2.4ghz and although I am not sure it works on 5ghz as well. Fixing channels might help to stop some of the handoff stuff happening which I think is giving you trouble.
Apple has written some documents specifically for wireless issues with iOS.

  • Airport Express 1st Gen dropping Time Capsule 4th Gen when being used to extend signal

I have an older Airport Express 1st Gen and recently purchased a Time Capsule 4th Gen.  The firmware for both products is updated to the latest version.  When I set up the Airport Express to extend the signal for the Time Capsule, it works great at first, connects and the status light turns green. But after a while, the AE drops the "extension" and the light goes amber.  I have also heard this is a problem from a Macintosh expert at the Genius Bar.  Has anyone solved this problem?

Try using a wireless name that is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric on the TC.. I would even set different names for 2.4ghz and 5ghz..
So for example.. TC24ghz and TC5ghz meet our requirement.
Use WPA2 Personal security not wpa-wpa2 as that leads to issues.
Use password that is 10-20 characters pure alphanumeric.. can be mixed upper and lower case plus numerials.
Fix the wireless channel of the TC..
Now see if it makes a stable extend..
Always remember the Express must not be so far away the signal is poor.. it should get good signal itself so it can repeat to the other clients.

  • Time Capsule 4th Gen with 2 AE's to extend wireless has no consistent connection

I have a Time Capsule 4th Gen & 2 Airport Express (A1264) devices used for extending the wireless range - all on v7.6.4. The network setup is a u-verse modem that goes to a Cisco 8 port router, that has one ethernet line to the Time Capsule, one ethernet line goes to one of the AE's, another ethernet line to another 5 port router and an AE connected to it, and the remaining ethernet lines are to hardwire different rooms in the house.
The goal is to have the most robust wireless network I can create for the house that has, 4 iphones, 5 ipad's, 4 mac's, 2 pc's and a few other wirelesss devices. I also have an AT&T wireless Microcell (not sure if relevant). The issue revolves mostly around really poor wireless performance on iphones and iPad's they just take foreever to load pages and in many cases I need to do things like turn off wireless, forget the network, restart, airplane mode and such to get it connected. I've tried multiple configurations, and the performance is not consistent.
My understanding is that the AE's connected to ethernet on the home network can extend the TC's range and make the movement of mobile wireless devices throughout the house seemless. Is this setup doable or am I just not going to get this with the current configs.
TC setup, DHCP to u-verse gateway, Network Mode set to Create... ., WPA2 Personal, 2.4 channel 9, off bridge mode, timed access control enabled
AE1 setup, DHCP to u-verse gateway, Network Mode set to Create... ., WPA2 Personal, 2.4 channel 5, off bridge mode, timed access control enabled
AE2 setup, DHCP to u-verse gateway, Network Mode set to Create... ., WPA2 Personal, 2.4 channel 7, off bridge mode, timed access control enabled
Really appreciate any advice or tips on improving this setup. Thanks!

My understanding is that the AE's connected to ethernet on the home network can extend the TC's range and make the movement of mobile wireless devices throughout the house seemless.
This is generally true if you are using Mac laptops, but PCs and mobile devices using the iOS systems like the iPhone and iPad will not usually automatically "switch" from one wireless access point to another as the device moves from one area to another.
That's a nature of the beast of the iOS system, I am afraid.
Usually, if you move the iOS device from one area to another, you willl need to turn off the WiFi on the device, then turn it back it on. Then, it will usually pick up the stronger signal from the closest wireless access point.
Sometimes, if I move an iPhone or iPad from one area to another in a multiple access point network, the iOS device will switch over to the stronger signal after a few minutes.
I haven't installed iOS 7 yet, so can't comment on whether it might be better in this regard, but I would be surprised if it was.

  • TS3972 How can I access the files(movies, music, etc) in my Apple Time Capsule(4th Gen) from my Apple TV(3rd Gen). This is very frustrating Apple has not provided a basic feature, and me buying the Time Capsule and Apple TV is an complete waste of bucks.

I have an Apple TV (3rd Gen) and Apple Time Capsule (4th Gen). How can I access Movies and Music stored in the Time Capsule from Apple TV. This is very  n't give frustrating that Apple doesn't give their customers with an straight forward access to their customers in between their own products. Iam repenting that buying these products is completely waste of bucks. Appreciate your help...

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The Time Capsule is clearly announced as a router with a hard drive to make backups, not to store anything and share it with your Apple TV.
To access to movies and music from the Time Capsule, note that the Apple TV can only access to them if they are stored in your iTunes library, so you will have to put your movies and music into iTunes to access to them, and then, put your iTunes library on the Time Capsule in order to access to your data from there

  • Time capsule 4th gen firmware 7.6.1 and Windows 7 Home Premium

Hi I have a Time capsule 4th gen firmware 7.6.1 and Windows 7 Home Premium and every time I try to copy a large file from the TC to my Windows 7 laptop the TC crashes.  The time capsule disk dissapears from the network and the wireless is still on but with limited connectivity for everyone including the macs connected to the same network.  On the contrary, I can copy any files to the TC.  No problem.  I've tried all the suggestions.  Lmcompatibilitylevel 1, disable 128-bit encryption, and disabled windows search.  No luck!  Any other suggestions?

My previous reply: red herring. The problem didn't occur again right away, but eventually it did. Completely repeatable: start copying a 100GB file off the Time Capsue to the ThinkPad, and the entire wi-fi network goes down; nothing to do but pull the plug on the TC and restart it.
I have tried several different versions of the Intel wi-fi driver under Windows 7 and 8 -- same problem in all cases.
At least one other thread describing these same symptoms points to the firmware as the culprit (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3582780?start=0&tstart=0). I have just downgraded the TC firmware from 7.6.1 to 7.5.2 as suggested; so far so good.

  • Time Capsule 4 gen. with iMac OS X Lion   3 Windows PC (XP OS, Vista OS, Seven OS) cable modem with TC as Wi-Fi. Time Machine on iMac found TC for backup easily. Have Wi-Fi access on PC XP with Airport utility but cannot create TC.

Installed today Time Capsule 4 gen. with iMac OS X Lion. I also have  3 Windows PC (XP OS, Vista OS, Seven OS). Internet Access is cable modem with TC as Wi-Fi. Time Machine on iMac found TC for backup easily. Have Wi-Fi access on PC XP with Airport utility but cannot create TC. Does the Airport utility under Windows is way to access backup capabilities with TC ?

The TC is really just an external networked hard disk plus router.. you can access the hard disk and place files on it from any computer. You can backup any computer to the TC but it will have to use a backup software in windows.. there are literally thousands available. The built in msbackup is horrible.. but you can download lots of different software and buy then online for not a lot. Macrium Reflect has a free disk image backup, and when you pay for it includes incremental. I think disk images are well worth it, as they recover much better.. and their is a proper method of recovery using a boot cd.
BTW the TC space is not endless. And it is designed to hold a large number of incremental backups.. so anything you do in backing up several machines will make the number of backups limited. Remember you can also use a usb hard disk plugged in as a Network accessible disk. But it has to be formatted HFS+ or Fat32.. the later being highly undesirable.

    1. Ethernet .. are you using ethernet?
    2. Change the name of the TC to short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    3. In the file sharing page change the workgroup to WORKGROUP.
    4. In the same area, change the guest access to on read and write.
    5. If you setup homegroup on the PC get rid of it.. TC is not compatible with homegroup.
    6. Turn off ipv6 in the network settings for ethernet. (since you are going to be using ethernet).
From Mac version utility it looks like this.
Go to the admin tools and ensure that bonjour for windows is on.
Manually type the IP directly into windows explorer.. do not open via MyComputer.

  • Time Capsule and iPhone 3G Connection Issues

Just rolled out a new Time Capsule (current gen). All but one device was able to connect perfectly including two Mac Minis, iPad and Lenovo laptop (work). However, the iPhone 3G is showing as connected with a checkmark in settings but no wifi icon (just 3G) and I can't connect to iTunes for remote, etc.
So far, I've done the following:
Reset Network Settings in the iPhone 3G. Rebooted Time Capsule.
To note, we set this up to "replace a current network" since we needed the SSID to be the same.
    Solutions?

    How is the TC setup??
If it is in bridge then it should have no impact on the connection at all.. so please tell us that..
If it is in router mode and was working in router mode, I do not know why it will have stopped.

  • Issues with Time Capsule (4th gen).. or Airport Utility?

I have som abstract issues with my Time Capsule. After some recent downtime with my ISP I thought I'd start digging around in the Time Capsules settings using the Airport Utility. Thing is though, when/if the TC shows up in the utility and I click it, it spins around at reading my settings for awhile, then I lose the connection to it entirely, it disappears from Airport Utility and I lose WiFi AND ethernet connection for a good five-or-so minutes. The unit still shows a green light.
I have a tiny bit more luck if I use Airport Utility in Windows 8.1 running through Bootcamp. I can click the Time Capsule without it "shutting down" on me and I can restart the unit through the software, but as soon as I try to change any settings or even enter my password to do so, the same thing happens.
This has happened to me in the past around 2012/2013. My first Time Capsule broke down and I had it replaced, the replacement unit did this to me as well, with the addition of WiFi not working at all so I had that replaced for a unit with the same issue... I kept this cycle replacing up and after about four or five Time Capsules I got the one I have right now which I ONCE managed to install and set up properly, but only through Windows and not OSX.
I just don't know what to do. I can't update the firmware because the airport utility can't read the settings properly as mentioned above, so I don't know if this issue is fixed through an update. Is this a common issue with the 4th gen Time Capsule? As I had it (or something like it) happen to four of the four or five units I've had I could guess it is..?
Any tips or hints, some obvious setting in OS X I could have accidentally

    That is quite a story.
The Gen4 up to recently I would say was clearly the best TC they made.. finally got out most of the bugs and it ran cool enough to survive at least the 3years they should. (You cannot hope for too much more in domestic grade routers now).
But there has now come up a heap of strange issues. Mostly the units just die.. but the use of Mavericks is also causing some problems.
It is possible to do this manually even in Mavericks and even using v6 utility.. although IMHO the v5 utility is a lot better.
I hope you have already got a replacement for your TC in terms of network. Anything you do here might remove the settings that work and you will be unable to put them back.. so don't start until you can know that a bypass is possible.
Also I would like you to do this a special way. And we have a problem immediately..
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)
You must have ethernet. Do you have another computer with ethernet.. ?? Or can you get a friend to help with a laptop, PC or Mac that still has ethernet. Otherwise you need to buy a Thunderbolt to ethernet adapter which are not too expensive. And well worth having.
You need to factory reset the TC and do this in full network isolation.
So one ethernet LAN port of the TC to the computer. Computer has no internet connection and no wireless on.
    1. Do the factory reset.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    2. Manually setup the TC by ethernet.
I have done this setup with screenshots in this thread. If you would please follow that.. anything you don't follow just ask.

  • 1st Gen Time Capsule and External Hard Drive Issues

I have a 1st generation Time Capsule and have never had any luck connecting an external hard drive (both Western Digital MyBook and Seagate FreeAgent Pro) via an USB hub for an extended period. They will connect for a few hours or up to a day or two before they lose the connection and look up the wi-fi connection (although the internet and connected printer don't seem affected). Thought it might be an issue with the powered hub, but have same issue with both (Belkin and APC). I have read that others have had similar issues.
For laughs, I connected a dinky personal drive (WD My Passpoert 750gb) to the USB hub and it came up instantly and had no issues for the 12+ hours it was connected. Question #1: can I run a portable drive for an extended period of time (weeks, months, years) via USB hub without killing it?
Also, I would like to house my large iTunes and iPhoto libraries to be accessed by 3 different MacBooks. Question #2: is a NAS drive connected directly via ethernet to the TC is the best answer?
I am spoiled by the simplicity of the plug-and-play connectivity of Apple products. Is there a mysterious sequence of procedures that I need to follow to get the Time Capsule to play well with the USB connected HDs?
Thanks in advance for your help.

To answer the general question, a drive that is constantly spinning is both more likely to be damaged and less likely to give issues of access to the USB.. the one fights the other. Feel the small passport drive and see if it is continually spinning.. if so that could account for it maintaining connection.. although according to your testing 12hrs is not long enough to know for sure. Feel the other drives. If they spin down and then when you try to access them, do they spin up? Or is it the spin down time that dictates the time they are available on the network. It may simply be a case of usb connected to a router is not getting the correct spin up info.
IMHO a NAS is the right way to do this.. especially if you have multiple computers accessing it. USB is not a fast connection. Especially hanging off the TC series 1, were not renowned for speed. A NAS is not that expensive now and using a mirrored raid you at least have some protection. Remember to always have the source files in mulitple locations. A NAS can also work as an itunes server, which the TC cannot. And the connection from gigabit ethernet to sata is not made via usb.
As a secondary option.. open your series 1 TC and put in a 2TB hdd.. this is well documented.. larger sizes give trouble but the series one can easily be updated to 2TB.. remember also the power supply in a series one can go at any moment. Get ready for it, plan for it.. one day it will happen.

  • Time Capsule with BT Infinity modem issues

    Hello all
I am attempting to set up my Time Capsule as the router and wifi, connected directly to the BT Infinity (UK based broadband provider) modem.
I have been using my MacBook Pro (mid 2010, Yosemite 10.10.1) and Airport Utility to configure the settings so far. I've managed to connect the TC and have created two wifi networks.
I have since been experiencing intermittent problems with the TC not appearing on the network, via AU on my MBP. However, when this does happen, the wifi seems to work OK. Can anyone explain why this might be so, and how to remedy this issue?
I have connected my Sonos ZonePlayer to the TC, but when the TC disconnects, the Sonos ZP then needs to be set up again.
I have also connected my Panasonic TX-50AX802 to the 2.4 network on my TC. This all worked fine at first, but then after the TC disconnected and wasn't available, the TV is unable to maintain a wi-fi connection. How might this issue be resolved?
I also have my iPhone 5s and iPad connected to the TC (both running iOS 8.1.1). These seem to be working OK. I haven't experienced any issues connecting with the TC via Airport Utility on my iPhone.
I would be grateful for any assistance with this as I have only a very limited understanding of the technical aspects of creating a network.
    Thanks

    In a word.
    Yosemite
The fix is to use a better OS.. eg anything before Yosemite.
Sorry but Yosemite is bug filled and causes wireless issues.. take a quick look around this discussion.. 3 out of 4 issues will be yosemite since it came out.
On old laptop and especially if you upgrade installed.. then you really need to go back to earlier OS.. or at least clean install Yosemite and try again.
It can actually cause issues in combo with your iOS 8 due to the new handoff protocols which apple need to work a lot harder on fixing.

Turn off the computer.. reboot the TC.. do any other other devices have issues? Panasonic TV or Sonos?? if not the computer is the cause.
You might alleviate some of the worst effects by setting up the TC again.
    Please use the following.
    1. TC main name really short.. eg TCgenx (x actual number of the Gen if you like).
    2. Set wireless names TC24ghz and TC5ghz.
    3. Lock the wireless channels so they cannot change. eg use 13 or 11 for 2.4ghz
Use 100 for 5ghz.. but whatever works for you..
    4. Test with no security.. briefly to make sure that all is working.
    5. Set security as soon as you can.. WPA2 personal.. 8-20 character password no spaces.. no non-alphanumeric characters.. mixed case and numbers.

  • IPod Touch 5th gen. wi-fi issues

I recently purchased an iPod touch 5th gen. I have had no issues except with he wi-if connection. Every time I hit the sleep button, or it times out, the wi-fi disconnects. Every time I want to use my iPod, I wake it back up, and sometimes the wi-if will auto connect, but most times I have to re connect manually. I have searched and haven't found anything too helpful. I went to the apple store near me, and they had no idea what was happening. I was wondering if this is some sort of setting? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Do you have this problem with all networks or only your network? If only your network that points to a problem with your network.
Have you powered off and then back on your router?

  • Time Capsule/AirPort lost 2.4ghz connection

I'm trying to help my parents with the AirPort connection on their Time Capsule.
Last night my mother updated to the new firmware (7.3.2) and then mistakenly hit "default."
Needless to say this took out their AirPort network but also somehow took out the internet for their ethernet connected QS G4 - I could still access the TC via AirPort Utility.
I stopped by tonight to fix it.
The settings for the internet connection looked OK and the G4's connection came back when I turned the wireless back on.
I restored all the AirPort settings (WPA2 personal, 2.4Ghz N B/G compatibility, all the names and passwords) but I couldn't get a proper connection: I turned off the AirPort and back on again on my Mom's 2008 MacBook and after a very long seeming 5-10 seconds the MB connected - full bars - to the network but then dropped the connection after 1-2 seconds and up popped the dialog "none of your preferred…" etc..
I tried re-installing the new firmware, dropped back to the previous version, then back to 7.3.2. No change. I tried "Restore Default Settings…" and etc... I tried unplugging it for a few minutes...
Finally I set the network to 5Ghz N only mode and voila! Normal connections. I put it back on 2.4Ghz B/G mode... same dropped connections.
I've left it in 5Ghz mode for now but dad has a first generation MacBook with no N support... so I still need to figure out what the heck is going on.

Mark, I had a similar problem and had to reset the unit - our Time Capsule - using a paperclip in the reset hole in the rear. Also went with the advice of other posters here and did a downgrade of Airport Utility to previous *version 731* from the *new 732*. Now, we're back in business, but only after reconfiguring entire network setup. Not that big a deal but never should have happened. Hope Apple issues a bug fix on this soon. -Dave
