Time Capsule 7.3.1 not working as an ethernet bridge

So my DSL provider AT&T gave me a plane jane router (no wifi) that does NAT and DHCP. My airport express works without flaw and has done so for the last year.
I just bought a time capsule and can't get it to work as an ethernet bridge and the other options are not going to work since the DSL router does all the ip stuff (I'm no networking expert, but I did futz around with the other routing options for time capsule and didn't get anywhere).
When I do attempt to use timecapsule in bridge mode, I get the following error that pops up in a dialog box after the capsule restarts and my laptop connects:
" IP config 192.168.1.64 in use by 00:1f:f3:3c:de:46, DHCP Server 192.168.1.254"
Now, I opened network utility and the "00:1f" device listed isn't my macbook. I've also turned off all the other wireless devices in my house and have done the whole restart everything and reapplying the settings to the timecapsule afresh. Nothing seems to work. Any insight would be really appreciated.

I'm having the same problem, but in my case it's a bit worse. I cannot connect to the TC drive at all from my macbook until I reset the TC. Attempting to connect via finder results in a "Connection Failed" response. After resetting the TC, it will work fine for a while (I don't have any more exact time frame, sorry) then starts failing again.
I have had this TC for 6 months, and after the initial hiccups, it's been working flawlessly. This latest problem started just after upgrading to 7.4.1. I intend on downgrading this evening after work, to see if that will fix the problem and restore the flawless service I had before.

I am trying to setup my new time capsule but it is not working. after entering the airport utility and locating the TC, after I tell the program to continue, the unit just disappear from the menu and the setup menu says there is an error. I tried using the wireless connection, and also the cable, but none worked. Any idea of what could be happening?

What are you setting it up as.. join wireless network .. the very worst setup, it will disappear.. reboot the whole network in order modem. router TC.. clients and it will likely reappear.
Tell us what network setup you are using..
If you setup with cable to a computer completely isolated from the network with TC also isolated.. finish the setup of everything you want. .before update.. then plug it into the network. .then restart everything in correct order.. it will work most of the time.

  • New MacBook (Aluminum), new Time Capsule (Dual-Band), backups not working

My Mom got a new (refurbished) 13.3" MacBook (Aluminum) and new (not refurbished) Time Capsule 500 GB (Dual-Band.) The Time Capsule is working great for wireless internet and we can copy files to and from it, but Time Machine backups are not working. I enabled Time Machine, selected her TC, and then when it tries to backup it sits at the preparing stage for a little while and then gives a very unhelpful "the backup failed" message. Unfortunately I don't have the exact error message, but it never gets out of the preparing phase. It doesn't stay in preparing forever, it only stays there for a minute or so before it gives up and reports the backup failed message and stops. It's unclear to me, searching these forums, if this problem is the same as others are reporting.
I've tried turning off Time Machine and back on, removing and reselecting the Time Capsule, etc. Nothing makes a difference. There are no backup files on the TC - it's brand new.
This happened out of the box, but I also tried installing the latest Time Capsule firmware. It didn't help.

Apple needs to create a configuration tool that configures all the Apple devices one owns by creating a network diagram using drag and drop symbols...
Sounds like a cool suggestion. If you want Apple to hear it, go to www.apple.com/feedback/timecapsule.html

  • Time Capsule-  does it or NOT work as remote server?  Not seeing benefits I was sold by the salesperson.

Hi!  I'm hoping you can help eliminate my frustrations....
I purchased a macbook pro 13 inch because my other macbook 2009 was already low on memory and I thought it best to upgrade.  I needed more space but wanted also the ability to access remotely and not worry about computer being stolen with all the information on it because I travel A LOT.
I asked the salesperson if I purchased the 128g MBP and the time capsule would i be able to access all my information remotely?  The thought process was:
    1. With over 500GB already in my previous MB i would transfer all that information from the old MBP to the time capsule where it would be at home safe
    2. set up the time capsule to access all files remotely (including iphoto, itunes, videos, etc)
Because my information already was over 500Gb, buying the 2TB was going to be plenty of space.  So I went with purchasing the MBP with lower space (128G) + the 2TB Time Capsule.
Now I'm trying to set everything up, was on the phone for 2.5 hours, spoke to 5 reps and finally received an answer: CAN'T DO IT.  DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY.
I kept searching online and see that
    1. the Time Capsule can only be used as a time machine for backups.  Can't use as a remote server but others say you set up a server file and works.
    2. I can't place the iphoto library or itunes library there to access remotely because I risk it being corrupted (sales person said it would run slow but worked well)
SO, the big question...can SOMEONE please help me determine if this was worth the $350 purchase because right now it feels like i'm better off sticking with my external drive from WD that i have been working with.  I'm seeing ZERO value add for this device....
PLEASE...if someone knows if i can really get it to work for what I need, I would truly appreciate your advice because right now FRUSTRATION is at it's max...especially after 2.5 hours on the phone with little to no solutions.

Some of this depends on your home internet speed.. do you have a fancy 1Gbit link.. with 100Mbps uplink.. well that is faster than rest of the internet.. so you can well support some sort of home cloud device.
I would also strongly recommend business level internet accounts with static Public IP address.. not dynamic.
For most people with limited upload speed.. 1mbit is standard where I live.. and real throughput is 800Kbps. Forget it.
I would never advise anyone to depend on remote access.. for anything with 1Mbps upload.. and even 5Mbps is going to be a struggle.. Maybe 10 or 25Mbps you can function.
It is simply not the right way to do things. You are far better off carrying around a 500GB thunderbolt drive.. which weighs next to nothing and is as fast as the internal drive.. or use a standard cheap 2.5" USB hard disk which you can get up to 2TB now.
Backup to TC but not by Time Machine.. or backup to the cloud.. for sure..
You can also access some files in the cloud. That is much better than using a TC at home.. where you then have a domestic quality link to the internet.
Apple specifically say not to use iphoto on network drives.. that means any network setup.
iTunes you can use from a network drive.. but if you have a massive library and slow upload speed it will never finish loading.
The internet for the most part is just not there yet.. maybe another 20years. In Australia that will be 100years with the current bunch of Philistines running the place. And if you do international travel and depend on networks in hotels or cafes.. well forget it.. they are going to give you enough bandwidth to load your email as long as it is pure text.
Apple have a 2week return period.. just take it back if you are unhappy with it.

  • Time Capsule-AirPort Express-WDS not working together

According to everything I've read here, I've configured this properly, but it doesn't seem to be working. If anyone can help me troubleshoot this I would greatly appreciate it.
I have a new Time Capsule acting as my main wireless base station; it has a manually-configured static IP address, is plugged into my Verizon FIOS router, and is set to distribute IP addresses over wireless using DHCP. I have it set to run a 5 GHz network in addition to the regular 2.4 GHz network. I have an older AirPort Express that I want to use to extend the range of the 2.4 GHz network (the Express can only do 802.11b/g, not 802.11n), in part because we have some older devices in the house that I don't want to slow down the 802.11n network, and in part because the 802.11b/g signal doesn't reach all parts of the house very strongly. So I told the Time Capsule to make its network extendable, told the AirPort Express to participate in a WDS network as a WDS relay, and entered the MAC address of the Time Capsule's 2.4GHz network as the WDS main. Result: flashing amber light on the AirPort Express, which no longer shows up in the AirPort Utility; I had to do a hard reset in order to get the Express back (and then it had to be reconfigured again, of course). At the moment I have it just joining my wireless network, and that works -- green light -- but of course doesn't allow the Express to extend the range of the wireless network.
What am I doing wrong here?

Before there was dual band, we always told users that if they used WDS, the entire network would revert to "g", even if the Time Capsule, AirPort Express, etc were capable of "n" performance.
Your findings seem to confirm that this happens with a dual band as well.
I think it's well worth it to get the AirPort Express 802.11n. Then you can reconfigure the Time Capsule back to "Create a wireless network" and check the box to "Allow this network to be extended"
The Express"n" would then be configured to "Extend a wireless network". I use this setup and would highly recommend it. There may be a slight bandwidth loss due to overhead, but the performance is light years ahead of WDS.
If you are using the same network name for both bands on the Time Capsule, then I believe by default the Express will extend the 2.4 GHz "n", "g" and "b" band. This makes sense for most users since 5 GHz signals do not travel well over distance or penetrate obstructions well.
IF...you want to extend the 5 GHz band, the only way that I know how to do this is click Wireless Network Options on the wireless setup page for the Time Capsule and enable the option to assign a different name for the 5 GHz network.
Then you will have to configure the Express to extend this specific 5 GHz network. I never had much luck extending 5 GHz, and I wanted my iPhone to be able to use the network across the house, so I went with the simpler one network name for both bands and extended the 2.4 GHz network.
If you have a "g" device joining the extended network, it may tend to slow the "n" devices down slightly...when the "g" device is active, but it won't drag everything down to "g" levels. When the "g" device is not active, "n" devices will run at "n" speeds.
BTW, the ethernet port on the AirPort Express is active when you configure it to "extend a wireless network". This can come in handy for hooking up DVD players, etc that need an internet connection for firmware updates and extra features.
Follow up....I tried a very quick reconfiguration of my dual band AirPort Extreme (same router that the Time Capsule users) and AirPort Express using the WDS arrangement and everything did indeed drop way down in speed and performance.
Post back if you have questions. Happy to help.

  • Time capsule and router will not work

I have a time capsule and needed to take it into the Apple store.  Upon setting up again I can not get access the internet.  the computers recognize the network but will not connect to the internet.

You have described the problem.. but we have no idea of the setup which you have..
    So please tell us.
What modem you have? Make and model?
What router is working as the main network router?
How is the TC connected into the network?
Please post a screenshot of the current setup of the TC from airport utility as that tell us more than anything.

  • Time Capsule and Airport Express not working correctly.

Just bought a Time Capsule to replace my router....and now my Airport Express is no longer showing up in Airport Utility.
Also, the speed is awful.  I have 25MB coming into the house via ethernet....but a speedtest on my wireless network shows me running at 4.5Mb download speed.
I spent $500 on the Time Capsule.  I don't understand it.
    Anyone have suggestions?
    Tony

I would suggest, reconnecting the Express to the TC again. Use the AirPort Utility to make ALL configuration changes including the network extending settings. Then restart both base stations and check that the settings are still good. Then disconnect the Express and give it a few minutes to initialize. It should connect. If not, then the issue may be either the distance or obstructions (like walls, ceilings, floors, etc.) that is preventing the Express from getting a signal from the TC that is adequate enough to extend.

  • WPA security with both time capsule and airport express not working together

I want to set WPA security on my time capsule so that my teenager can not access wireless with out permission but when I add a security key my airport express disappears from list.
I have tried setting a password then the time capsule restarts and when it does the aiport express is gone from list and can not be found when rescanned.
Do I need to set time capsule and then reset airport express by pluggin it directly into desktop and resetting its software?
    Thanks

  • Time Capsule and Airport Utility Not working?

I just got Time Capsule, I tried to hook it up at my office by attaching it to the internet. I went through the steps to have it show up as one of my wireless devices. Even got the green light. However I must have set it up wrong because now airport utility cannot find the apple network and continually asks to RESCAN - the utility has dimmed out all my other options so all it does is rescan but can't find network etc etc. I would just like to reset everything and start from scratch but it won't let me. I"ve deleted my Airport Utility application and reinstalled but it still won't work. Any suggestions anyone.
    Rick

    Hi Rick,
Press the recessed reset button on the back of the Time Capsule for 5 seconds or so. This will reset all settings and let you find it in AirPort Utility. Also, you need to provide a bit more information about your current/intended network setup in order for us to provide any useful advice (ie, how will you connect to the Internet, what purpose your TC will serve such as Router, wireless device, etc.) And just FYI, deleting and reinstalling AirPort Utility is kind of futile as the reason it wasn't detecting your Time Capsule was because of the settings on the Time Capsule itself, but with the reset it should be able to detect it again.
Also, here is a useful Apple document that will give you more information about setting up networks:

  • Time capsule wireless router will not work

I have a Time Capsule that I use as a wireless router in my condo.  Our internet company was recently purchased by another company, and after the transition, I am not able to connect to internet wirelessly.  My condo is wired with active ethernet ports.  If I plug the ethernet cable directly into my computer, I am able to log in to the ISP's main page and connect to the internet without any problems.  However, if I plug my ethernet cable into the Time Capsule as I did before, I cannot connect.  Before the company bought the old company, I didn't have any issues.  I've called their Tech Support 3 different times about this and they tell me they don't provide support for my wireless routers because there are so many different types.  They suggested resetting the router password, but I'm not completely sure how to do that.  Is that different than my airport password?
I should also note, that if I pull up System Preferences and to the "assist me" feature under the Network option, it tells me that I'm connected.
Any help you can provide would be fantastic!  I'm at my wits end with this issue, as I connect a number of devices to my Time Capsule wirelessly.
    Regards,
    Jake

I have a 2TB Timecapsule and really only use it for Time Machine backups. But the Wi-Fi side is used to sync my iPad at times.
    Mine is wiredup thus;
Eth cable from iMac to modem (not the WAN port should you have one),  then eth cable from modem to T/Cap in the WAN port (bottom port with an O sign above it)
I believe when its connected up you may have to set up a wireless network. Follow the instructions to set up Wi-Fi and Network
and then give it a password. The WiFi icon should appear in the menu bar where you can switch it on or off.
Its been sometime since I set it with the help of Apple Techs so I might be a bit rusty.

  • My Time Capsule expired and no longer works. My printer (a HP) will now not work as it still wishes to connect through the Time Capsule. It will not allow itself be recognised through a USB connection to my Mac. Anyone got any ideas?

My Time Capsule expired and no longer works. My printer (a HP) will now not work as it still wishes to connect through the Time Capsule. It will not allow itself be recognised through a USB connection to my Mac. Anyone got any ideas?

You will need to install the printer on your Mac
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Open Print & Fax
Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list
Wait for your printer to appear in the next box, then click it to highlight it
Click Add at the lower right
Be sure to select the correct printer when you try to print as you will see your printer listed twice. Good idea to make the printer now installed on your Mac the default printer so you do not have to choose which printer to use each time you want to print.
You can also go into Print & Fax, select the printer associated with the Time Capsule and click the - (minus) button if you want to delete that location.

  • Is there a way to connect an old Sunflower iMac (OSX 10.4.11) to a new Time Capsule?  It used to work with old Airport Extreme with updates thru Snow Leopard but now seems to only allow WEP encryption instead of WPA.

Is there a way to connect an old Sunflower iMac (OSX 10.4.11) to a new Time Capsule?  It used to work with old Airport Extreme network, run from a intel iMac with updates thru Mavericks but now seems to only allow WEP encryption instead of WPA and can't connect to Time Capsule.  Airport Extreme Base was controllable from either computer up through Snow Leopard (I didn't do any of the Lion upgrades).  Then when I upgraded to Mavericks I lost the ability to use Airport Utility with this hardware on the Sunflower but could still connect wirelessly to network without any problems.  But now with the Time Capsule upgrade the Sunflower is blocked from network by a dialogue that requests ony WEP password, not WPA pwd used by Time Capsule.  Neither can I use the old airport extreme base to extend the time capsule network since I can't input the correct password/encryption approach to join it.  Is there a work around?  Would a newer but old Airport Express be able to extend network to Sunflower?  Or maybe a third party wireless (such as Netgear, Dlink, etc) that has browser type control rather than special utility?
Another question--before I used MAC addresses to control who could access network.  Now on Time Capsule I don't see anything about this--so is it true now that the only access control is via WPA2 pwd now (which appears to be the encryption pwd and not the time capsule pwd)?

Is there a way to connect an old Sunflower iMac (OSX 10.4.11) to a new Time Capsule?
I can’t claim to completely grasp the issue(s) you’re describing, but the underlying problem is presumably your iMac’s obsolete AirPort card. Whatever the case, an obvious (if not particularly helpful) answer to your stated question would be to connect your iMac with an ethernet cable, using powerline adapters as an alternative if you don’t want to have wire running all over the place.
My still fully functional clamshell iBook, with an original AirPort card, connects wirelessly to my 4th Generation TC network by means of a cheap 802.11b/g/n USB Wi-Fi adapter. This might be an option for you too.
Another question--before I used MAC addresses to control who could access network.  Now on Time Capsule I don't see anything about this
When you edit your TC's settings the access controls appear under the Network tab, don't they?

  • I have copied my iTunes library to my time capsule. I am trying to point the iTunes to use the file within the time capsule but it does not show up. However I see the file when i open it thought the finder. Please assist.

    Hi,
    I will apprecite your help.
I find the copied file to time capsule though finder bt not when I open the pointer.
    can anyone help?
    Regards

No I have not watched a video to move iTunes.
You are trying to convince me that the video is correct.. but you are having issues..
I tend to consider Apple's documentation superior .. not that they always get it right.
If it doesn't work we need more info.
    Is this Mavericks?
Is the youtube video using Mavericks.. ?? If not then I suspect your problem is due to poor networking in Mavericks.
Ensure you follow the rules for SMB networking..
All names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Try manually mounting the hard disk in Finder via Go, Connect to Server.. make sure the TC is mounted before you try to connect to the library.
You will have constant problems because the TC is unsuitable for iTunes.

  • Help! Time Capsule and MacBook Pro not talking

I'm really hoping some bright spark out there has some suggestions.
I recently took my MacBook Pro and Time Capsule to an Apple store due to 2 problems:
    1. The computer was slowing down and occasionally crashing.
    2. Whenever Time Machine tried to back up to my previously happy Time Capsule, it said it "could not mount the back up disc image" and failed.
They suggested that changing the hard drive would fix both problems as the time capsule issues were probably related to the struggling hard drive. They then planned to get back the previously saved information from the Time Capsule to give me back all the stuff from the old hard drive. After a great deal of trouble getting the hard drive actually changed over (after doing a lot of backing up to USB sticks), they called to say they had some issues getting the info back out of the Capsule because it hadn't saved properly last time. They didn't seem interested in pursuing the idea of getting the most recently saved snapshot that had worked (a month or so ago now) so just gave me back computer and a Time Capsule that they said was working but apparently with my info imprisoned inside.
So, I took it home and I've now got a computer (with none of my user info) and a Time Capsule set up for direct connection rather than wireless. When I went to set up my Time Capsule as something connecting wirelessly to the computer, it updated the settings but the Time Capsule failed to reboot and ever since has been giving me the flashing amber light. Every time Airport Utility scans for wireless devices, it can't find the Time Capsule.
    I've already tried:
    - Re-installing my original Leopard from scratch.
    - Updating to most recent Leopard and Airport utility.
I'm nervous about resetting the factory settings on the Time Capsule because I don't want to lose the data in there, I'm keen to try and get it back somehow (I've backed up most vital things but there are always going to be some things I'll lose otherwise.
Sorry it's a long entry but I'm looking for all the help I can get!
    Thanks to anyone who tries.

The new TC will need to be setup again in the MBP..
Just go to TM and select the target disk for backup again.
If you have issues plug in by ethernet and make sure the wireless setup is configured correctly.
Read the stuff in pondini about resetting TM.. that can help.

  • If i buy a time capsule in europe it will work in the us?

If i buy a Time Capsule in Italy it will work back in the US?

    Yes, BUT..
Apple regionalise them.. and the European wireless rules are different to the US. And a Euro one, will not allow you to select US as the current region for wireless.
Mostly Europe has more range than US, and therefore you can use it illegally in the US.. but as long as you stick to the allowed channels you will have no problem.
That implies btw that you do not leave the channels on auto.. you should always manually set them.. otherwise the router is just as likely to choose the illegal channels since they are not used and it will auto discover the lack of wifi happening.
    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels
And compare for 2.4ghz and 5ghz.
Overall it is much better to buy in the market you will use it in.
AFAIK apple do not allow change of region.
I figured out how to change them.. but it requires a soldering in a serial port.. you don't want to know!!
