Time capsule aborting backup with error message

My Time capsule has worked properly for a year but has now stopped. I keep getting an error message which says "The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk" and then continues with "The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use the Disk Utility to repair your backup disk".
I've erased the disk, reconfigured it and it appears to working correctly. However, after backing up anything from 4gb to 20gb (of 93gb to back up) it stops with that message.
The airport utility I am using is version 5.5.1 (551.19) and the Time Capsule is 7.4.2. I think there's another version for this but the 'Check for updates' says nothing to update.
I have now connected via ethernet in an attempt to rule out any wireless issues, although the wireless network is functioning perfectly.
What can be the problem here?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
I hate that message -- there's no clue about what to do when that doesn't work.
It's most likely a corrupted/damaged file on your internal HD. See #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • How do I configure Time Capsule as backup with an existing d-link router?

I just purchased a 1T Time Capsule. My original idea was that it would replace our d-link router. However, I was not happy with the speed and connectivity compared with the totally awesome D-Link (Dual Band DIR825), which is solid and connects and stays connected with all computers in my household. So, now I want to use the Time Capsule as the backup for three MacBooks (all running the latest OS).
So... how do I set this up so that it will work? I have a total of three MacBooks and three PCs, but only the MacBooks need to backup to the TC. I handle the PC backups separately.
I am new to the Mac world, but am relatively comfortable with computers. Networking not so much!
Equipment: D-Link DIR 625 attached to a Cisco high speed modem attached to the Comcast all in one digital voice modem. I get the fastest home Internet Comcast can provide.
    1 new MacBook Pro
    2 older model white MacBooks
Also, is there any way I can set up print sharing through the Time Capsule? It doesn't work well over the PC network, and the USB share utility that comes with the D-Link router is terrible.
I have an older HP Laserjet 3030 and a newer Canon Pixma 970. Neither printer is wireless.
Any help you fine people can give me would be much appreciated!
    Thank you!
    Linda H.

OK, thanks for the info. Let's get the TC setup to work with your Macs for backups and then tackle the printing question as a separate item.
Connection wise, you will connect an ethernet cable from one of the available LAN <-> ports on your D-Link to the WAN (circle icon) port on the TC.
To make the TC configuration simpler, rather than using wireless to configure the TC, temporarily connect another ethernet cable from your Mac running Snow Leopard to one of the LAN ports on the TC
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
(You may be asked if you want to update AirPort Utility. If so, go ahead and update and then restart AirPort Utility again.
After you have clicked the Manual Setup button...
Click the Time Capsule tab below the row of icons to assign a name to your TC, device password (write this down) and adjust Time Zone Settings
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
    Wireless Mode = Off
Click the Disks icon above the Time Capsule tab
    Click the File Sharing tab
Make sure there is a check mark next to Enable File Sharing
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update at the lower right and the TC should restart in 15-20 seconds and you should have a green light.
As a check, open your Macintosh HD and look for your Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading on the left side of the panel. If it's there, that's good.
If it's not, click anywhere on the open desktop to display the Finder menus at the top of your computer screen.
Click Finder, then click Preferences, then click the General tab
Under the heading of "show these items on the desktop" make sure that there is a check mark next to "connected servers"
You should now see the TC icon under the SHARED heading. If not, try restarting your computer.
Keep the ethernet cable connected between your Mac and TC for the first complete Time Machine backup as it will go much quicker with ethernet. You can do subsequent backups using wireless since they will only take a few minutes each hour.
Not sure if you want to setup Time Machine at this point or concentrate on the printers.
Please post back on your progress.

  • When setting up my Time Capsule I get an error message that another device is using my computer's IP address.  What can I do about this?

When I am setting up my new Time Capsule I get a pop up window that says another device is using my IP address and I have to change it.  My time capsule will not work or connect to the Internet.  I assume that is why.  Everything is plugged in as should be.  I also have a wireless DVD player and my DISH network plugged in to the Ethernet of the Time Capsule.

You need to do the setup of the TC before you plug it into the network.. you obviously already have a router, so set the TC up as bridge device.. in airport utility/internet tab/connection sharing.. off bridge mode.. then you can plug it into the network and whatever is main router will do its job properly.
If this is not the case, then you have a static IP setup somewhere.. or another dhcp server.. track down and remove it.

  • Time capsule says backup failed

I've tried to backup my computer using time machine several times now over the course of a couple days and my time capsule consittently gives the error message:
There has been one successful backup done yesterday, but every time I try to maually initiate a backup it returns this error message. I need to know that this backup has been done because I am about to delete a couple of photo libraries after consolidating them into one. I just want to make sure that should something go wrong I still have the origianl two photo libraries. Thanks, jlswanson99

When you delete something from the computer at some unknown point in the future Time Machine will delete the library from the backup.. this is not the way you preserve your files.. manually copy the library to another drive somewhere.
Please read about how TM actually works.

  • When doing a restore with Time Capsule, I get -8003 error; restoring nothing

    Hi,
When doing a full restore with Time Capsule, I get -8003 error; restoring nothing. This happens with all recent backups. Also after doing a verify/repair of the TimeCapsule disk.
This is a dissaster for my originals (my Ableton Live projects). I am very dissapointed in TC and TM at this moment, because I trusted my backup system in combination with my MBP fully.
    Please help?
    Best regards, Tom

    Hi Pondini,
Sorry for the late response, but the problem was something else and were two separate ones.
Somewhere along the way the TC backup couldn't find backup to the original TC volume, that's why I let TM backup towards my user volume named 'Tom'.
When I wanted to restore the root of my drive when selecting the diskname and 'Restore' in any point in time, this resulted in error -8003 in the activated TimeMachine.
Then I tried to do it via the recovery OS and even via the original OSX DVD. Both not enabling me to select the TC volume named 'Tom'. Then I remembered that I first backed-up onto the original 'TimeCapsule' volume/partition. When I copied the sparsefile to the 'TimeCapsule' partition, I was able to recover the entire disk using the recovery OS.
All my files are backup and I am a happy Mac user once again :-)
    Thanks & Regards, Tom

  • HT3275 I received this message and I'm unsure how to fix it "Time Machine couldn't complete backup to Time Capsule the backup disk image"/Volumes/The Vision Board/Alex Parry.sparsebundle" is already in use

I received this message and I'm unsure how to fix it "Time Machine couldn't complete backup to Time Capsule the backup disk image“/Volumes/The Vision Board/Alex Parry.sparsebundle” is already in use

Look at the more like this on the right column of the web page.
This is the most common error here.. we answer it 5-10times every day.
Simple method.. pull out the TC power cord .. count to 10.. plug in the TC power cord.
Look at the other references for more info.

can you tell me step by step how to recify  this problem.
    Yes:
Step 1: Delete the preview cache.
    That's it!
So, the trick is to find the preview cache.
    This document gives location:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/preference-file-locations-lightroom-41.html
To be clear: it's a folder in with your catalog and you want to delete the whole folder but nothing else.
If your catalog file path is "X:\My Catalogs\My Catalog.lrcat", then the preview cache "folder" will be:
    X:\My Catalogs\My Catalog Previews.lrdata
So the trick is to find your catalog file, and since Lr won't open your catalog and run, you can't use it to find out.
But you should be able to find it by searching your disks for *.lrcat files - do you know how to do that?
    Which OS?
If you know the name of the catalog it will help, but also: it's probably NOT in with your program files.
UPDATE: The above-mentioned document gives default name and location for preview cache, so if you haven't overridden the default, it should be right where that document said it would be - is it? (of course you need to know your user name too, but presumably you do, no?).

  • HT1178 Can the time capsule be used with a pc running Windows Vista , 7 or 8 as a backup drive

Can the time capsule be used with a pc running Windows Vista , 7 or 8 as a backup drive.
Yes, on XP, Vista and 7. Have not tried 8.
If so what software do I need to buy?
Genie Timeline Pro does a very nice job...and it is similar to Apple's Time Machine.  It's not cheap though.  Check with the Genie folks for more info and compatibility with Windows 8.

  • Time Capsule 4 gen. with iMac OS X Lion   3 Windows PC (XP OS, Vista OS, Seven OS) cable modem with TC as Wi-Fi. Time Machine on iMac found TC for backup easily. Have Wi-Fi access on PC XP with Airport utility but cannot create TC.

Installed today Time Capsule 4 gen. with iMac OS X Lion. I also have  3 Windows PC (XP OS, Vista OS, Seven OS). Internet Access is cable modem with TC as Wi-Fi. Time Machine on iMac found TC for backup easily. Have Wi-Fi access on PC XP with Airport utility but cannot create TC. Does the Airport utility under Windows is way to access backup capabilities with TC ?

The TC is really just an external networked hard disk plus router.. you can access the hard disk and place files on it from any computer. You can backup any computer to the TC but it will have to use a backup software in windows.. there are literally thousands available. The built in msbackup is horrible.. but you can download lots of different software and buy then online for not a lot. Macrium Reflect has a free disk image backup, and when you pay for it includes incremental. I think disk images are well worth it, as they recover much better.. and their is a proper method of recovery using a boot cd.
BTW the TC space is not endless. And it is designed to hold a large number of incremental backups.. so anything you do in backing up several machines will make the number of backups limited. Remember you can also use a usb hard disk plugged in as a Network accessible disk. But it has to be formatted HFS+ or Fat32.. the later being highly undesirable.

I have set up Time Capsule to use with Time Machine but when I open Time Machine it 'cannot find' the Time Capsule and I have to 'Select the Disk' each time. In the Next Backup tab it always says "When disk is connected" even though the disk is already connected.

Your pro doesn't matter.. I presume it is happily working.
Your imac setup has got messed up because you changed from a local (my book being USB type I presume) to network drive. Did you do a clean install of Lion?
Did you use the backup from the Pro on the imac? Otherwise I don't see how the Pro shows up in use previous disk. Where is Pondini when you need him??
You cannot download Time Machine as an App and replace the current version. It is built into the OS.. the only way to do it is a clean install. Unfortunately that might be the only way around the issue.
There is a number of issues that Pondini has covered in the setup issues of troubleshooting.
This is the most relevant I think. http://pondini.org/TM/B6.html
But look at the whole section B setup problems.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
If it was me, I would store all the info you need.. not using TM but using a straight copy of files.
Then clean install Lion. I doubt any of these issues would exist if you had not installed Lion over existing setup or used a different backup.
See if you can get Pondini to respond.. !!

  • WE05 takes a long time and ended with error message: time out

    Hello,
When user trying to use WE05 transaction it takes more time and ended with error message time out.In the WE05 tranaction even i tried with minimal search options(like for just 2hrs duration, for one day) still getting the same error.I think there must be problem in EDIDC table.
       Please suggest solution for this????
    Regards,
    Loki.

You have to enter the selection ctiteria on WE05, might be there is a huge data on these tables. So the best option is to enter the selection criteria as much as you can to get the IDOC list. Also check the sie of EDIDC table and analyse the number of IDOC on that table. Make sure that index are updated of the table

  • My upgrade to IOS5 for iphone 4 continually times out with error message 3259. Any ideas on why?

My download of ios5 continually times out in itunes, quoting error message 3259. Any ideas why

THIS WAS COPIED FROM A THREAD THAT WORKED FOR ME SO I CAN'T TAKE THE CREDIT
Open notepad as administrator, and direct yourself to:
    C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc
    open the "Hosts" file:
note the "127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com" portion near the bottom. your hosts may be different, and if so, then look for that part specifically. the problem for me, lied within the fact that just before the "127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com" part, there originally was no hash(#) with the space like the rest of the hosts file. This was all I had to fix. After editing and then SAVING the hosts file in notepad I restarted iTunes and the update went through without a hitch!
so if you do not see the hash and space before the "127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com" part, all you have to do is put the #, and then press tab! I hope this works for some of you guys! So just to be clear, that particular line in the file should look like:
    # 127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
    good luck!
