TIME CAPSULE ACTIVITY LED.. HELP NEEDED.. THIS IS MY FIRST POST..
Hello people.. I have spent the past couple of days setting up my T.C and only now is it connected to my PC via Ethernet and my Mac Book Pro by wireless means, boy the intital setup was complicated as I wanted it as part of my wireless network and not using it as the main router all I can say is very convulated and complicated instructions in the box are as good as useless so I chucked those in the bin and done it my way which was made possible by trial and error and it worked as long as you have patience common sense and time so that's that part over now the back up with using time machine whoo hooo, initially the first back up was done over ethernet and was 36Gb and took almost 3 hrs to complete I dunno if that is good or bad time but was advised that wireless would have taken ages so that's the reason I went hard wired..
Anyway my problem? I noticed posted on the internet that the front green light of the T.C should flicker in sync with the hard drive activity but instead it stays permanent green during hard drive activity or on stand by this by default means I can't tell visually if the hard drive is being accessed except by vibration or the audible means which I must say I replaced the original 500gB hard drive with a 1TB model from segate as it is whisper quiet and is hardly audible.. I have tried in AIRPORT UTILITIES to find the tab or setup location to turn the green light from solid green to flickering during hard drive activity to no avail.. I give up looking for this tab or setup page as I can't find it anywhere IN THE AIRPORT UTILITIES SETUP MENUE ANYWHERE PERIOD SO please help..

I have tried to folow multiple guides and threads about how to make my Time Capsule accesible via the Internet - but nothing has helped so far, and I'm almost ready to give up - so this is my very last call.

My IP address is not static, but I just determines it from www.myip.dk or similar sites.
My Time Capsule is also working as router and therefore supplying the local IP.
I won't use your time in explaining what I have done so far, so please let us start at the very beginning.

/LasseIf your Time Capsule (TC) is configured to be your Internet router, then you only need to do two things to allow access to it from the Internet:
o Using AirPort Utility, enable both the "Enable file sharing" and the "Share disks over Ethernet WAN port" options on the utility's Disks > File Sharing page.
o On the utility's Summary page, note the value of IP Address. This will be the TC's WAN-side IP address.
To access the TC from the Internet, use Finder's Connect to Server option and enter afp://TC's WAN-side IP address in the Server Address box, and then, click on Connect.
Now an issue that you will come across is that you are not getting a static Public IP address from your ISP, so your TC's Public IP address will change periodically. You basically have three choices to resolve this: 1) Upgrade your service to business grade to obtain a static IP address, 2) Employ a service like DynDNS, or 3) Check your current Public IP address before attempting to access your TC from the Internet (not very reliable or convenient). -
I need advise and help with this problem .
First , I have been with Mac for many years ( 14 to be exact ) I do have some knowledge and understanding of Apple product .
At the present time I'm having lots of problems with the router so I was looking in to some info , and come across one web site regarding : port forwarding , IP addresses .
In my frustration , amongst lots of open web pages tutorials and other useless information , I come across innocent looking link and software to installed called Genieo , which suppose to help with any router .
Software ask for permission to install , and about 30 % in , my instinct was telling me , there is something not right . I stop installation . Delete everything , look for any
trace in Spotlight , Library . Nothing could be find .
Now , every time I open Safari , Firefox or Chrome , it will open in my home page , but when I start looking for something in steed of Google page , there is
''search.genieo.com'' page acting like a Google . I try again to get raid of this but I can not find solution .
With more research , again using genieo.com search eng. there is lots of articles and warnings . From that I learn do not use uninstall software , because doing this will install more things where it come from.
I do have AppleCare support but its to late to phone them , so maybe there some people with knowledge , how to get this of my computer

You need to be running at least the Lion (10.7.5) operating system or higher on your Mac, or using an iPhone or iPad with AirPort Utility installed on the device to set up the Time Capsule.
Check the System Requirements for the Time Capsule to confirm.

I have a macbook pro and use BT homehub 3. can't work out how to connect my time capsule. can anyone help? thanks
Just need to plug the TC in to the hub in bridge mode.. do not try and bridge the homehub.. it is not possible with the setup BT uses.
To bridge the TC.. plug it directly into a computer by ethernet.. no other connection to the TC or the computer.
Press and hold in reset until the front LED flashes rapidly.. about 10sec.
Release the reset.
Open the airport utility and setup the TC to bridge mode.
The actual method depends on version of the OS and airport utility you use.
This is version 5.
Sorry I cannot post the v6 as I am on a snow leopard computer now. But you go to the network tab, and choose off bridge mode for method of connection. It will be NAT and dhcp by default.
Then setup wireless.. you have a number of choices here.
Either setup with the same SSID Security and password, as the homehub uses.. or a different name, and password..
Each method works fine.. but you sometimes have issues with wireless channels.. for now leave it on auto and see what happens.. if you have issues lock down the radio channels on both devices.. use one out of the following on each, 1, 6, 11 or 13 in UK.. so say 6 on the homehub then 13 onthe TC.
Update the TC.. unplug fromt the computer and plug it into the homehub.
If you have other issues with the setup tell us what OS you run so we can post suitable screenshots. -
Can't Connect to My Time Capsule Backups, Please Help!!!
I have been using Time Machine/Time Capsule to back my data up for over a year. I bought a new MacBook Pro this morning. I did not want to use Migration Assistant to transfer everything over because there were many bugs and corruptions on my old disk and was scared that would all be transferred to my new machine. It was time for a fresh start.
I set up my new computer and transferred most of the files I needed via a flash drive. I am now trying to set up my MacBook Pro to connect to my Time Capsule backup disk via Time Machine, but once I enter Time Machine it does not allow me to go "back in time" to see all of my previous backups and restore points. There are some really important files I am trying to get to, but this computer isnt connecting to the Time Capsule backups. The old computer has already been completely reformatted, but it is still able to access the Time Capsule backups.
I have done some internet research and learned that Time Machine uses a computer's ethernet MAC address to allow access. There are some codes posted on various websites that allow to alter what Time Machine thinks you MAC address is so that you can access your backups with a new computer/different logic board. None of these Terminal workarounds worked for me. The Genius Bar and Apple Care couldn't help either.
I am hoping somebody can help me out. I understand I can use my old computer to get into Time Machine and retrieve what I need then transfer those to the new machine. But there must be a way to allow a new computer to fully access Time Capsule backups, but curiously, I can't find it. I rather have my new computer have full access because I am selling the old laptop and so I wont be able to use it to access my backups any longer.
Sorry for the long explanation, but I hope that gives someone all the facts required to both understand what I am saying and help me fix the problem.
-AmirRight now it is just empty because I have unmounted and disconnected my Time Capsule. I'm trying a low-tech work around to see if this works, but much rather do it the "right way."
What I am doing is this:
(1) Use Migration Assistant to copy everything from the Time Capsule to the new machine (this is exactly what I was trying to avoid initially). Migration Assistant has been copying files for about 5 hours now (still not sure what is going to happen).
(2) Create a full backup on Time Capsule with my MacBook Pro now that it has everything from the Time Capsule on it.
(3) Do a fresh install of Snow Leopard.
(4) Hopefully, have the fresh start on my machine I wanted, but still have access to at least one archived copy of my old computer and files/folders.
Does this make sense? Basically, the new machine does not allow me to access the old backups. So I am handicapping the machine now by reverting to my old settings via Migration Assistant, will back that up, then start all over from scratch again but hopefully have the peace of mind that my files are not gone because I will at least have that one copy of all my old copies in a Time Capsule backup that the new machine can access. -
Time Capsule Remote Access [HELP]
So like the title says I want to have access to my Time Capsule from anywhere.
I'd like someone to post a [HowTo] Step by Step.
I have:
MB Pro with Lion OSX 10.7.4 (Airport Utility 6.1 and 5.6)
TC with FW 7.6.1 (Bridge Mode)
T-Home Speedport W 504V configured as a DSL-Modem
TC is connected to the Speedport.
I've read many things but they make everythin more complicate.
I also tried to activate NAT-PMP with a public IP so that I can Share Disk over WAN, but the program tells me that
DHCP Staraddress and Endaddress are in conflict with my WAN-IP-Address.
So at the moment I'm using the Bridge Mode.
Also iCloud "Back to my Mac" tells me NAT-PMP or UPnP isn't activated on my router.
So please give me some help with this stuff so I can get access from an extern network.
And if I try to do it on Airport Utility 6.1 it tells me Double NAT.

Khanh DuyI don't have a howto step by step sorry.. I refuse to use OS with as bad a Networking as Lion.. and no interest in clouds..
You can do this without icloud at all. And it is simple if you have a static public IP address.
Even without static public IP you might do ok with the modem you have.
So let me suggest 3 possibles..
1. If you want to continue down the icloud road.. the issue is upnp .. did you turn on upnp in the modem.. if not do so and try it. TC should be bridged.
Or if you ISP allows pppoe authentication then bridge the modem and use the pppoe client in the TC.. this is a better method as then the TC gets the public IP on its WAN port. You can select to allow disk access from WAN. Although if this is necessary or not from iCloud I have no idea.
2. With a static public ip, simply port forward AFP to the TC ip address. I will not post the details unless you do have a static public IP because most people don't. TC is in bridge.
3. Use dyndns client in the modem.. Here again you will have to check if that facility is in the modem.. again the TC is in bridge.. port forward AFP to the IP of the TC. The router has to control this using a fixed IP to the TC.
In both the case 2 or 3, you access the TC remotely by simply using its IP address or URL. In finder, go, go to server and type in AFP://PublicIPaddress or AFP://TCdyndnsaddress
If you just google for "Time Capsule remote access" there are hundreds and thousands of posts explaining how to do it.. but if you cannot figure out method 2 or 3.. I am happy to give further details. -

I installed LION on my mac pro 2008 and it's alway's pop with " there was a problem connecting to the server " Time Capsule" .How can i remove this popup. My Time machine is working fine and also rename it with less than 7 karakters. But the popup keeps on coming with the old name.
I have a BT Infinity router plugged into the Time Capsule, not sure where the radio settings are?
They are able to use the network settings of the TC i.e. they can connect to the internet via the wifi through the TC but when they try and connect to the AirPort Disk this is where it is not allowing a connection.
I don;t have the drive shared out at all at the moment, is this necessary? How do I do this if so?

As a Verizon FIOS client, can we just use Ethernet cable to connect to time capsule or do we need the Verizon router to connect to time capsule?
The Time Capsule is indeed a wireless router with simultaneous dual band capability...and a hard drive for backup purposes. You can use that to your advantage if you configure the Time Capsule as I suggested in Bridge Mode.
The Time Capsule will provide a 802.11n 5 GHz band and a 802.11n/g/b compatible 2.4 GHz band to allow virtually any device to connect to the network.
I suppose that you could also use the "g" wireless network provided by the Verizon router as a "guest" network or something similar if you really do need another wireless network.
It might be possible to configure the Time Capsule as the main router on the network....that's a question for Verizon. But even if you might be able to do this, I'm sure it is not supported by Verizon, so you would be on your own in the event of any Internet connection difficulties on your service.
And, since the Time Capsule does not have a built in modem....you would still need to add a separate modem to the installation anyway.
That's why my suggestion is to use the Verizon device as the "modem" and let the Time Capsule provide the dual band wireless network and of course, handle the Time Machine backups. -
This is my first post, but I have been following this forum for a while and you have all been very helpful in my MacEducation. I have a MBP17 10.6.8 w/6GB ram from '08. I need to upgrade my HD from 200GB. I would like to go as big as I can and would appreciate any experiance you've had. Could I go 750GB or 500 GB @ 7200 rpm. Yes you can do the 750 or 500, 5400 or 7200. Just make sure it is 2.5" SATA and 12.5mm high or less (there is at least one HD out there that is 15mm high and will not work).
Lion: I don't know that it matters much either way, just don't do them at the same time. That way, if there are issues, you have a much better chance of troubleshooting one major change instead of two. -
I am not much of a computer technician. I bought a time capsule thinking I could use this for an external hard drive and keep my MAC hard drive free. Was I mistaken? Once I back everything up on the TC, can I delete everything off of my MAC and then use my TC as my hard drive??

TC was designed to backup your Mac. The TC literature is pretty clear about this:
If your Mac's hard drive has a problem....it will sooner or later....you can use your backup on the TC to rebuild your Mac.
But.....if you move all of your data to the TC from your Mac....you only have one version of that data now, and it is on the TC.
Have you thought about what will happen when....not if....the TC has a problem? Since the only version of your important data was on the TC, and the TC has failed......you lose all of your data.....because you have no backup.
A much better plan would be to add a USB or FireWire hard drive and connect it directly to your Mac. Move the data on your Mac over to the hard drive.
Then, the TC will backup both your Mac and the hard drive. So, you have original data on on one drive and backups on another drive.
That would be a minimum backup plan. Most of us have more than one set of backups. -

PaulYou may not need to buy a new Time Capsule.
You can connect a USB drive to the Time Capsule, and use it in addition to the TC's internal HD. You may need a powered USB hub as well.
Exactly what is on your TC? If it's only Time Machine backups, you may not need to do anything -- Time Machine will delete the oldest backup(s) automatically when it needs room for new ones. But if you have more than about 250 GB on your internal HD, that 500 GB may not be large enough to keep backups long enough.
If you have other data on the TC's internal HD, besides your backups, you could back up to the external HD and use the internal for the other data, or vice-versa. But TM backups cannot "span" two drives, and you shouldn't mix backups and other data on the TC's internal HD. -

You might consider restoring to factory specs, as detailed in the booklet that shipped witht the machine, using the Setup Assistant on first boot, and then reinstalling those new programs. i've not moved pictures, so you could always give that a shot.

Oh yes, & 5 GHz doesn't do walls very well at all.
