Time Capsule adress conflict with Airport Express
Hello, hope someone can help me out. I have a small network at home, using the Airport Express as wireless base station connected to my DSL modem. Both iMac and iBook can connect and I can play my iTunes over the network to my stereo.
Bought a Time Capsule and tried to get it to work. In the setup menu I have chosen it to operate in my network. The timecapsule will reboot but then I get a message that it has in incorrect network adress and from that moment on the TC stays invisible. Now I can see in the setup program that the TC is trying to use 10.0.0.1 as network adress. I haven't got a clue how to change that adress and into what it should be changed.
As for now I have connected my TC to my iMac using a 10 m ethernet cable, but that is a bit boring. I would like to have it operating wireless. Next to this I would like to keep using my AX to play my music to the stereo and use the USB printer connected to the TC or the AX
Who can help me out?
You should use the Manual Setup option from the AirPort Utility so that you will be afforded the maximum configuration options.

Extending Gen 1 Time Capsule Wireless network with Airport Express N
I am having difficulty setting up my new Airport Express w/ 802.11N (SKU# MB321LL/A) to extend the wireless network from my Time Capsule (SKU# MB276LL/A).
My setup is as follows:
Time Capsule is connected to Cable modem with the following wireless settings:
Wireless mode -> Create a Wireless Network
Allow this network to be extended -> Checked
Radio Mode ->802.11n (5Ghz N only)
Wireless Security -> WPA2 Personal
The issue is the when I attempt to setup the AE to extend the network. I match the settings to the Time Capsule:
Wireless Mode -> Extend a Network
Select the Time Capsule Network
Allow wireless clients -> Checked
Wireless Security -> WPA2 Personal
However after I reset the AE the LED glows Amber and the following problem is reported:
+Wireless Network+
+This AirPort wireless device is set up to join a specific wireless network that can't be found. If you don't see the network that you want to join in the Network Name Pop-up menu, enter the network name and network password if necessary to try again.+
When I check the Airport->Wireless tab the settings were as before.
Any thoughts on this? Thanks.Welcome to the discussions!
Have you tried to position the AirPort Express close, say 10-15 feet, as a test to see if it will connect that way?
If so, then move it back another 10-15 feet, etc.
5 GHz signals do not travel well or penetrate surfaces very well, so my first thought was that the signal was not strong enough for the Express to pick it up where you had it located.

Extending time capsule based network with airport express
Have installed airport via time capsule. would like to extend range of network with and airport express unit. is this possible and how?
Welcome to the discussions!
+"would like to extend range of network with and airport express unit. is this possible and how?"+
Yes, possible to extend the "main" network. If you have the dual band Time Capsule, note that the "guest" network cannot be extended. Here's how to set it all up:
_On the Time Capsule:_
Click Manual Setup when you open AirPort Utility
Click the Wireless tab just below the row of icons
Wireless Mode should be "Create a wireless network" (It's probably already set this way)
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Update to save settings:
_On the Express(n):_
Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode should be set to "Extend a wireless network". If you don't see this choice, hold down the "option" key when you click on the selection box
When you select "Extend.." your wireless network created by the TC will appear as a choice to extend. Select it and enter the wireless password.
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
Update to save settings.
Whenever you plug the Express in, it will automatically extend the wireless network from the Time Capsule. The ethernet port is also "live" in this setup.
For more info, refer to the "Designing AirPort Networks" guide, pages 43-44.

I changed the network name of my time capsule and lost my airport express in the process.... I have tried all of the resets (soft/hard/factory default) suggested in other answers to people but cannot locate the network of my airport express. It just keeps flashing amber. I want to add it back to my time capsule to extend my network as it was before I reset the name. HELP
Which model of AirPort Express do you have?
If you are not sure, the model number is on the side or bottom of the Express. Hard to see.....you may need a magnifying glass. The model number starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.
Post back with that info.......if you want to get the Express set up again to work with the Time Capsule.
You do have another option as well, although you will have to think in reverse on this one.
Change the network name back to the original name on the Time Capsule, so the Express will work correctly on the network.
Now, change the network name on the AirPort Express. It will be blinking amber when you do this, so power it off.
Then, change the network name on the Time Capsule and let it restart.
Now, power up the AirPort Express and it will join up with the Time Capsule network since you have already programmed it with that information. -
just did firm ware update on time capsule an now my airport express not connected do to air port utilities doesn't support base station ?

I have been experiencing some networking problems
Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I have the latest Time Capsule ("TC"), an old Airport Extreme Base Station ("AEBS") bought in 2007 and 2 Airport Expresses, one bought in 3 months ago ("AE-Alpha") and the other bought back in 2007 ("AE-Beta"). All of them have been updated with the latest firmware.
Based on those dates, the AirPort Extreme is probably flat (as opposed to dome-shaped), making it 802.11n-capable. The Newer AirPort Express is probably an 802.11n-capable model A1264, while the older one is probably a model A1084 or A1088.
I use {the TC's} DHCP function ... to avoid unauthorized use.
This a discussion for another thread, but that's not what DHCP is for.
The wireless setting for it is to participate as WDS Main, but after reading various posts, it seems WDS is a bad idea
With that older AirPort Express you're stuck with WDS unless you decide to replace it with a newer model.
The AEBS is currently setup as being a WDS Relay at the moment
Why a relay? That's only needed if there's another base station "beyond" it that is configured to depend on it.
Since the AEBS is connected to the TC via Ethernet, you should probably configure it as a "roaming network":
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2273124
{The AE-Alpha} connects fine as WDS remote at the moment
I don't have any experience with mixed WDS and non-WDS networks, but since it's 802.11n-capable, you may be able to configure it to "extend" the network of the TC rather than as WDS. Look for a setting on the TC to "Allow this network to be extended".
Physical location:
AEBS in one end, TC and AE-Alpha in the middle while AE-Beta on the other end.
A device such as "AE-Beta" that's supposed to extend a network shouldn't be "at the end" but should be half way between the central base station and the clients that need an extended network. -
Can't get TIme Capsule to recognize 2nd AirPort Express
I have a 3TB 802.11n Time Capsule and an existing Airport Express (AX) situated upstairs as an extension of my wireless network. I purchased a second AX for my basement to extend the network to that location. When I plug in the new AX AirPort Utility cannot seem to recognize the new unit at all. I am setting up in the same room as the Time Capsule. I have tried the unplug and plug back in method, reset button method, even plugged in an ethernet cord from the Time Capsule to the new unit, all to no avail. Could it be a flawed unit or is there some step I am not doing??
I figured it out. You have to know to see it under the wireless icon in the top left command line. Once you select it, then airport utility takes over. Interesting that the little setup booklet doesn't tell you that.

do i need to buy an apple time capsule to bridge my airport express or is it okay for me to just use my wi-fi router setup at home?
Sorry, I am confused by your question.
What devices do you now have on your network?

Conflicts with Airport Express and Time Capsule
I am using Airport Express and Time Capsule at the same time. Connection to the web is via a router. Very often I do have conflicts. How shall I connect the gadgets? At the moment I connect the router to Airport Express (network cable).
Time machine back up doesn't work properly.
Is there anybody able to help me?
RegardsWhat broadband type do you have?
It can be impossible to plug a TC into the existing connection because the virgin media router has special setup or logins which are not revealed to end users.
If it is a fibre connection for instance the TC may simply not work. They have issues with many fibre ISP putting the gateway address outside the subnet of the main public IP.. (don't worry if it is too technical .. it amounts to .. it don't work! )
You may need to wait until Sat.

Verizon Quantum Gateway has conflict with Airport Express
Does anyone have a problem with the Verizon Quantum Gateway in conflict with the Airport Express.

Should Verizon have this instruction for me to find?
Just ignore the verizon.. it really should not be a major issue.
If you are having problems fixing the channels in one router should then solve the problem by forcing the other router to use different channels.
I cannot tell you how to fix the verizon anyway as I have no idea what it is nor can i get one to play with.
Anyhow reset the Express to factory and start over.. the utility get it right most of the time.. and all you need to do is tweak the values.
I strongly recommend you use all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumerics.. password the same but 8-20 characters.
So do the setup with Express WAN port plugged into the LAN port of the Verizon router.
When you are finished.. click on the Express in the airport utility and click on Edit.. I don't have an express but the setup is identical for my Time Capsule.
When you click edit you will get the full manual setup.
Looks like this.. first tab is Base Station where you set name and password.
Go to the Network tab.. it must be bridged.
Go to the Wireless Tab. And you must Create a wireless network..
Down the bottom of that page is wireless options.. (sorry I cut it off in the screenshot).
This allows you to set a different name for 5ghz.. up to you.. I prefer doing this but it is perfectly fine not to.
At the bottom it shows wireless channels are set to automatic.
Click that and fix it ..
Here is my actual current setup.
Once you complete this setup.. you can reboot the Verizon modem router.. that will give it a chance then to reset its wireless and you should then be able to clearly see what is happening..
Use the tools apple has given you .. in Mac OS since Mountain Lion an excellent wireless survey program is built in.

Time Capsule (1st Generation) and Airport Express (ver 6.3) issues
Hi,
I am trying to extend the reach of my time capsule with the airport express. I have allowed my Time Capsule Network to be extended, but can not see any option on Airport Express setting for other than "create" or "join" a wireless network. Is it something that didn't exist in older models or am I doing something wrong? Can anyone help?
Thank
BulentUnfortunately, the older Express model that you have does not have the "Extend a wireless network" option.
That feature was introduced on the 802.11n version of the Express in 2008. -
Client connects to distant Time Capsule instead of closer Airport Express
I have a Time Capsule upstairs, and downstairs I have an Airport Express set up to extend the "n" wireless network for use by a client located downstairs and thus farther away from the TC. Recently the downstairs client started connecting to the far away TC rather than closer, line-of sight AE, resulting in poor performance.
I've restarted both the TC and the AE as well as the client several times but can't get the client to connect to the local AE with the strong signal instead of the distant TC with the weaker signal. (I see the client mac address in the TC and not the AE settings in Airport Utility).
Any ideas what causes this problem and how to fix it?
Thanks.Thanks for the info.
Locate the Express about half way between the Time Capsule and the general area that needs more wireless signal coverage.
Please power up the Express for a few minutes, then hold in the reset button on the back or side (depending on the version that you have) for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light condition.
Open AirPort Utility
Click on Other WiFi Devices
Click on AirPort Express
The utility will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network, then suggest that the Express will be configured to "extend" the Time Capsule network.
Type in a device name that you want to use for the Express and click Next
The utility will configure everything for you. When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done
The more that you have line-of-sight between the Time Capsule and Express, the better the network will perform. -
Time Capsule + Netgear Powerline Adapter + Airport Express
Any help on this issue will be much appreciated!
I'm attempting to improve my network stability through the use of Netgear's powerline adapters. The configuration I have (or I should say want to work) is as follows:
1. Time Capsule as main router connected to modem. TC is running both a 2.4GHz and 5 GHz network under name#1
2. Wired connection to Netgear Powerline Adapter #1
3. Wired connection from Netgear Powerline Adapter #2 to Airport Express
4. Airport Express is running a 2.4 GHz network under name#2
The connection directly comping from adapter #2 is excellent so I know the powerline adapters are working. I currently have the express configured to create its own network under name#2 and operate in bridge mode with an ethernet connection. When viewed in the Airport Utitlity the AEX has a valid IP address from the TC and has a green light. However, when any devices attempt to connect they cannot retrieve a valid IP. I did get the setup to behave one time, but it appeared as soon as the laptop which connected successfully closed the connection it could not re-initiate it. Its almost like the AEX isn't allowing IP addresses to get assigned to its wireless clients.
I have attempted to both extend the TC wireless network through the ethernet connection as well as this current configuration where the AEX is running its own, but I haven't had any yet. Not to mention constant reboots. Can you check the configuration again on the AirPort Express?
Open AirPort Utility - Select the AirPort Express - Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the TC network
No check mark is needed next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11 b/g compatible)
Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Same exact setting as the TC
Wireless Password = Same password as the TC network
Confirm Password
Click the Internet icon, then click the Internet Connection tab
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save setings and allow 40-45 seconds for the Express to restart
Then power off the entire network except you do not need to power of the Ethernet adapters
Start the modem first and let it run a minute by itself
Start the TC the same way
Start the AirPort Express
Continue starting devices one at a time until the network is back up
Test the network and report on your results -
I could really use some help.
I have a Gigaset router hooked up to my broadband connection. That is connected to my Time Capsule via an ethernet cable. I use the wireless off the Time Capsule for both my MacBook and my 27 in iMac (which is located in another room), that is hooked up to my HP LaserJet printer. I have an AirPort express that I want to have in my iMac room so that I can print wirelessly from my MacBook and eventually from my iPhone (but I don't need to figure that out yet). I can not seem to get my Airport Express to connect to my Time Capsule. Thanks for your help! Most likely not, as very few non-AirPort routers are WDS-compatible with the AirPorts.
