Time Capsule & ADSL Modem - Losing Internet Connection

My ISP is Earthlink which I access via a DSL connection. I use a Zyxel P-600 series ADSL modem to connect and recently purchased a Time Capsule to replace a NetGear router & separate network drive. Since installing time capsule, I've been losing connection to the Internet. I have the Zyxel set in "bridge mode" so there should be no interference with TC acting as a router. I also was experiencing disconnects with the NetGear router but not as often. Ideas?

How does the computer connect to your internet connection??
What type is it? Modem? Router? Wireless? ADSL?
You are not giving away any information. We need something to work with.
TC are designed to plug into a modem or router by ethernet. If you have wireless only internet they can join the network but it kills the functionality down to slow useless wireless client.

  • Computers connecting to internet via time capsule are reporting no internet connectivity.  PC is reporting default gateway has changed.  How to I correct this?

Am having trouble with maintaining a stable wireless network via the Time Capsule.  Am running 1 Mac and 3 PC on a Time Capsule wireless in bridge mode connected to a Verizon wireless router.  Verizon wireless is turned off and the Time Capsule seems to be staying connected to the Verizon router.  When any of the connected computerss goes to stanby, they often report the internet is no longer available.  The PCs say the default gateway has changed ans the Mac simply reports the network parameters have changed.  What do I need to do to the Time Capsule to stabilize the wireless network?

It is unlikely that the gateway changes.. but anything is possible.. sorry I am not in the US.. is your service adsl or cable?? What sort of lease time does the public IP have? Some cable companies now rotate then on the hour I noticed.. others on about 3months.. but most it is one day.
Track it yourself.. see what gateway address the TC gets and if it is rotating with the IP.
If your client computers are running Mountain Lion.. the plain fact is, they are not particularly stable.
Wireless is worst.. ethernet tends to be ok.. but for instance Laptops updated to Mountain Lion can be pretty flakey.. with the TC.. and it is the combo that is more the issue. People report improvement with clean install of ML. BUT there is still a bug there that causes the ML to be less than fantastic.
I experience it occasionally even with a dlink wireless router.. after a wake from sleep.. the network will drop out and need to be manually connected back.. I have to admit I expect no better from Mountain Lion. I could load Snow Leopard on it and it would drop once every blue moon.. but I got the laptop with ML so I live with it.. !!

  • Using airport time capsule to create an internet connected network from pre existing wifi network

i bought an airport time capsule for college. I bought it to create a network for my dorm room so that I could take the pre existing wifi from the school and make my own mini network that I can hook my other stuff up to. Problem is that I don't have an ethernet hook up in my room so the network would have to be created from a wifi network rather that a ethernet hook up. Is this still possible? Alternate suggestions? I am afraid of either the college network blocking users from communication with other devices via the wifi, or the fact that my printer would be on a huge network for all to screw with.

    Is this still possible?
NO, it won't work. Apple only works with apple.
    Alternate suggestions?
I am sure your college has rules about not running your own wifi networks.. but anyway.. that is up to you.. the Apple TC cannot turn off 2.4ghz which would be handy.. so the only way to do this following the rules is ethernet. You can run a full network standalone on ethernet. And still use wireless for internet.
If you want to use wireless standalone this is also possible but you need to connect a second wifi USB dongle your Mac so you can have two networks at once.. You can use an express to connect to the college wireless and bridge that to the TC by ethernet.. then use the TC to create your own network.. since you cannot turn off 2.4ghz I guess how long the College IT people take to track you down should be hours. If you could just use 5ghz it would probably be ok.

  • Time Capsule Updates destroys my internet connectivity. How do I fix this?

When I update on my time capsule, which happens rather frequently, my internet connectivity slows down considerably. Would deleting backup files on the TC make my internet quicker, is there any way to make my tc update less frequently (like twice a day) or anything else you recommend.
If so, how do you do this.
    Thanks a bunch.

When you say "update on my time capsule", do you mean "have Time Machine write backup files from my computer to my Time Capsule"?
If so, a Time Machine backup can involve some fairly intense network activity, so I'm not surprised your network slows down during that time. It should only be happening once an hour. There are third-party utilities that can alter that schedule. Try this one:

    (which I haven't used).

  • WRT54GS2 and Siemens ADSL modem - dropping Internet connection

I am having an internet connection issue. I have a Win98 Desktop directly connected to an ADSL modem - SIEMENS Speetstream 4100. That connection works well.
I had a WRT54G (old school, blue and black) wireless router connected to it which allowed me to use my WinXP laptop in the house. I then upgraded the router to  a WRT54GS2, and now I lose the connection to the internet every minute or so while connected through that. The connection between the modem and the router goes down, not the connection to either the desktop (wireless) or the laptop. And if I switch to direct connection through the modem, I get a solid, reliable connection to the Internet.
Is there some problem with the SIEMENS ADSL modem and the Linksys router not playing nice together?
I have tried ipconfig /release and /renew on both my laptop and the desktop, I have turned off all computers, modem, and router, and powered back up in the correct order: Modem, router, desktop and laptop.
Here's the output of ipconfig /all when my laptop is connected directly through the ADSL modem:

Why does the new WRT54GS2 lose internet connectivity when a direct connection through the modem does not lose connectivity and the old one was reliable?
    Thanks in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Your ADSL modem is in half-bridge mode. It does the PPPoE connection and then passes the IP addresses, etc. through DHCP to the device connected. Several people seem to have problems with different routers and these modems.
I would suggest you reconfigure the ADSL modem into full bridge mode (i.e. the modem works really like a simple modem and does not connect to the internet itself). In full bridge mode you should be able to configure your router with PPPoE and connect to the internet directly. That should work better.
If the ADSL modem is intelligent enough it may automatically switch to full-bridge mode if you configure the router for PPPoE.
You should see the difference in the DNS servers which the router got. In half-bridge mode the ADSL modem seems to assign its own IP address 192.168.0.1 as DNS server. If you connect directly to your ISP you should see the IP addresses of your ISP's DNS servers.

  • Time capsule 1st generation loosing Internet connection

I have a time capsule 1st generation on my iMac. Since I updated to Lion, my time capsule started to flash orange every hour or so… it's extremely annoying and I really have NO idea what to do.
Here's some specs and configuration for my network
    Firmware: 7.5.2 (75200.14)
    Wireless Security: WAP2 Personal
Allow this network to be extended CHECKED
    Channel: Automatic
Radio Mode: 802.11n only (2.4GHz) - I tried on 5GHz only and I had the same problem.
    Multicast Rate: 6Mbps
WPA Group Key Timeout:  1 hour - I tried 1 day, 10 days, X months, doesn't matter, problem still here
Create a closed network - UNCHECKED - Because the mac mini keeps on "forgetting" the network and it ***** to remember such a long password so I decided not to hide it anymore
Since the time capsule is pretty close to my computer, I use an ethernet cable but everything else in the house is Wireless (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Mac Mini, apple tv, Macbook Pro and Macbook)

I found out that if you are already in airport when the problem starts, it doesn't update the message but the light gets amber and you loose connection for more or less 15 seconds.
I got this issue again this morning, opened up airport and got 2 messages... then it went back online as if nothing happened. It's doing this every single hour.
Since I can't plugg on wifi only since I ALSO get the "No Hardware Installed"  message in wifi, I have to be plug with the ethernet cable
Am I the only one starting to REALLY hate Lion or what? None of this was happening on Snow Leopard...

  • New Time Capsule won't recognize internet connection.

My modem is working fine -- i'm on the internet via ethernet from the cable modem, through the new TC, to my laptop.
But I can't setup the TC because it's somehow convinced it's not connected to the internet.
Makes it seem like an ignorant little thing. All looks and no brains.
    Any tips?
    Thanks.

Cable modems come in various varieties.. and the TC does sometimes have issues.
    Tell us the exact model.
Some of the later Motorola cable modems.. get listed in this forum area fairly often as having issues.
15min off may not be long enough.. I would try 1hour .. and then overnight.
The TC must get the public IP on the WAN interface otherwise it will fail. That is with a pure modem.. and the TC must be in router mode.
Otherwise if the cable modem is a router then the TC needs to be bridged but from your description that is not the problem in your case.
You can ring apple support in your locality and they will talk you through the setup. At least for the first few weeks or if you have applecare on a computer then you will get support for longer period. If you are struggling with the setup ring apple as some TC do have issues.

  • Time capsule slows my entire internet connection

I first tdiscovered this after connecting my son's new xbox one. Xbox is now directly connected thru my router which is connected to my Uverse modem (which was completely updated to the pace 3801 box and tested by ATT). I have spend three days with xbox support configuring the xbox no no avail. I then discovered that all works wonderfully as longd as I take the 3rd Gen TC out of the system. I then updated to the latest gen TC and using a seperate router output, connected it to the system. Bam! everything is slow again. I have been all over the forums and I have implemented suggestions like shortening TC network names and I have run wireless diagnostics and speed tests:
With TC disconnected from the network and Mac Mini wired to router speed test:
With TC powered but not connected to network:
With TC powered, connected to router and wired to MAC Mini:
Diagnostics with TC in system and 2.4 Ghz wireless connection to MAC Mini(I have a diagnostics report but do not know how to share it on this forum):
Diagnostics with TC in system and 5 Ghz wireless connection to MAC Mini(diagnostics report available):
    Any help would be appreciated.

OK. Here are my results after plugging the TC directly into the Pace modem:
    Nautil put out this:
With some persistence I was able to get this:
IMMEDIATELY after moving the TC my diagnostic reports:
    on 2.4 GHz channel
    on 5 Ghz channel
After 24 hrs I got this on the 2.4:

  • ***Time Capsule intermittently losing internet connection***

    Hello, Here's the story:
My Time Capsule intermittently is losing internet connection. The light is green for 5-10 minutes at a time, then turns amber for 2 minutes and loses internet connection.
At first,..I thought it was the TC going bad. Went to my local Apple store and had it replaced under warranty.
Still,, the same situation was happening.
Then talked to AT&T (DSL) and they checked the connection. They deemed it was OK and possibly the modem going bad.
Went to Best Buy and purchased a new modem. Installed, put into Bridge Mode,...interenet working OK.
Still,...the same situation that it stays on for 5-10 minutes, then loses it for 2 minutes.
Any ideas? Could it still be the ISP (AT&T)?
Last thought,...my neighbor uses Uverse (AT&T) for his cable/ISP and he is expierincing cable/ISP outages ramdomly. I am using DSL (AT&T) too but through my phone line. Are the two possibly related?

You need to run the modem in router mode..
I would either bridge the TC or remove it completely because you need to get exact log info from the modem.
Do isolation test.. ie remove all phones and filters and other devices from your phone line. Reboot the modem.. and wait for restart to complete.
Copy out of the modem the full line stats, sync info and even better if you can get cli access and do some deeper level stuff.. (most of the tools I use are PC only.. ie dmt tools).
Then make sure the log is turned on and giving max info and watch your connection.. if it drops without anything happening on the modem,, then the ISP is having issues.. which is possible although connection of cable and adsl is loose or non-existent.
If it drops sync keep track of how often and the line stats, Particularly the SNR..
See if you have an rf noise source in the house.. more if you are interested.

  • 1st Gen Time Capsule thrashing modem

    Hi,
I've got a 1st Generation Time Capsule with version 7.6 software, which was a replacement for one of the faulty ones a year or so back.  This one work fine for about a week, then appears to start polling (thrashing?) the modem, where the modem seems to show constant activity and the Time Capsule gives no internet connection.  After resetting the Time Capsule I get the internet connection back.  Anyone got any ideas what might be causing this?
I know the Time Capsule is the problem; I ran an AirPort Express for a month with no problems.  The issue came back when using the Time Capsule again.
The ADSL modem is connected directly to the Time Capsule.  The Time Capsule generates a hidden network with WPA2 Personal security and MAC address matching.
    Thanks for any help,
    Sam

7.6 firmware is causing issues as well on my gen 1 TC.. and I am going back to 7.5.2 as it is simply more stable.
A lot of apple refubished TC were very poor.. they lasted less time than the original. Did not make people happy.
Is your modem bridged and you are using pppoe client in the TC??
Or the other way around. Router in the modem on and TC bridged.. do not use two routers.
Hidden SSID (wireless name) is a useless exercise and actually breaks the wireless IEEE standard. It causes multiple issues.. but the real joke is, on a utiity like inssider it is not hidden at all. As soon as it transmits it is visible to everybody with nasty intents. MAC filtering also useless. WPA2 with a decent passkey.. that is all you need. Anyone who breaks that already has access and can spoof a MAC address in less time than you can type it in.
As yet there is no method to break WPA2.. and the idea of an extra layer of security is meaningless.

  • Time Capsule working without the internet being turned on ?

I set my TC up last week and it first I thought you could just plug it in, connect to it, and then wirelessly backup. I was wrong.
The only way I could get it to work was by connecting it wirelessly to my router/internet connection.
Now whenever the router is switched off the TC will not work until it is turned on.
Surely the TC can just be used for wireless backup without the need of the internet being turned on?
    TIA

For you to be able to connect wirelessly to a Time Capsule independently of you Internet connection, your Mac would have to connect to two wireless networks at once. Mac OS X isn't really organized to make that feasible.
If all you want to do with the Time Capsule is to use it as a backup drive, it would have been cheaper to buy such a drive.

  • Airport time capsule losing Internet connection?

My airport time capsule is losing Internet connection but I still have wifi? Any suggestions?

It could be your modem, or other problem on the ISP's end. Try resetting your modem - power it down and let it rest for a few minutes, then power it back up again.
If it is a cable modem, also disconnect its coaxial cable - literally unscrew it and leave it detached while the modem is powered down.
Leave the TC powered up during that time.
After a sufficient amount of time has elapsed reconnect the cable and power up the cable modem. If you're still having trouble contact your ISP.
The possibility of a TC problem exists but the sort of failure you describe is not common. If all else fails perform a "hard reset" followed by reconfiguring the TC. Your Time Machine backups will not be affected.

  • I receive a not connected to the internet message several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via cable modem.. When I input my password to enter network preferences, the connection re-establishes.

I receive a "not connected to the internet message" several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via a cable modem. Software/firmware is up to date on the iMac (OSX 10.6.8)  and Tme Capsule(7.5.2). Browser is Safari 5.1.
When I input my password at the prompt to enter network preferences, all the lights go green (ie... ethernet, ISP etc.) and the connection re-establishes immediately and states "the connection appears to be working normally".
It more of a nuisance than anything and seems to have started ocurring over the past couple of months. I also have a windows XP box also connected to the same cable modem that I never have internet connectivity issues with. I've verified all the physical aspects of the connections and can't see any evidence of any actual drops in the modem logs. I suspect it is just an intermittent communication loss between the Imac and the Time Capsule, but I am not very familiar with Mac equipment yet.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem and what you did (if anything) to resolve it?
    Thanks.

The AirPort Express will connect to your existing wireless network if the network is using WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security settings.
So, it can join the network as a client and then provide an Ethernet signal to your Time Capsule.
Be sure to configure the Time Capsule to operate in Bridge Mode so that it will be operating on the same network.

  • Replacing an Airport Express with a Time Capsule but it won't connect to the internet.

Hello, I hope somebody can help.
I am trying to replace an Airport Express with a 2TB Time Capsule but it won't connect to the internet, via an ADSL modem.
I have tried everything I can think of, powering down all devices, re-setting all devices, but nothing seems to solve the problem.
When I first tried to set up the Time Capsule, there was an option to replace the Airport Express using the same settings.
But there were repeated error messages of 'No DNS Servers' and 'PPPoE server couldn't be found'.
I also had messages that the password for PPPoE wasn't correct, but when I plug the Airport Express back in again, everything works fine.
    What could the problem be?

99% of issues with authentication are wrong password or wrong username.. eg it can be strange like the user name is missing the domain.. whereas the Airport Express works fine without it.
Ring your ISP and make doubly sure you have exactly the correct username and password.
If it still doesn't work, put the adsl modem back into router mode and try it again directly on the modem.. if it works ok on the modem but fails on the TC that is possible and can be caused by pppoe client using incorrect authentication type, CHAP or PAP which the TC does not allow you to select AFAIK.. some ISP do not give enough time to get the router to switch on auto to the correct authentication method.
In the end run the modem as router and bridge the TC. It will work just as well for most installations in bridge as the modem in bridge.
