Time Capsule, Airport, and Airport Utility - setting up for SBCGLOBAL

HI,
I'm new, and relatively new to the MAC world. I have an iMac 24, 2007 year model and I have kept all the updates current. I just today purchased a Time Capsule and I would like to switch from the Linksys to the Airport attached to the Time Capsule. I tried the typical customer setup but I was not successful. Anyone that can give me some tips I'll owe you 10 cents.
I'm using sbcglobal as my ISP through a Speed Stream 5100 modem and a Linksys WRT54GS version 3. The Time Capsul is the newest and latest (I guess version 7.5). A search on the keyword sbcglobal resulted in on thread that has been archived.
Help?

Wayne M, welcome to the discussion area!
There are several ways to configure a router to connect to your modem and internet service. During the setup of the Time Capsule in AirPort Utility, you were asked how you wanted to connect to your internet provider. Among these choices were:
Connect Using = Ethernet or DHCP
Connect Using = PPPoE
What we don't know is how your modem is configured now. If it is configured as a "bridge" (our guess), you would use the PPPoE method to connect.
Do you recall how you tried to connect when you tried the setup?

  • Time Capsule (Tower) and Airport Express

I have a new Time Capsule (Tower) and want to extend the range in my house using an Airport Express.  However, I cannot get the A/E to connect, and I cannot see the A/E when I open the Airport Utility.  What am I doing wrong. Thanks.

Unfortunately, extending using wireless is going to result in a significant speed reduction on the network.
Power off both AirPort Express devices
    Wait a minute
Power up the A1264 for a minute or two
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 8-10 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
On your Mac, click on the AirPort icon at the top of the screen
Click on AirPort Express under the setting of New AirPort Base Station
The setup utility will open up. Follow the prompts
Set up the other Express the same way.

  • Time Capsule, Sonos, and Airport Utility Issues

I have a new Sonos system that is accessing music on my Time Capsule, to which I copied my whole music folder. It works fine from the handheld controller, however the desktop controller will show the library, but won't show me the Zone Players or allow me to control the system. Can only control from the handheld.
Another problem is while I can access the hard drive on TC, and play music simultaneously on the Sonos, Airport Utility says it can't find any wireless devices (so I can't manually change any settings on the TC), so I can't tinker with its settings and try to get the desktop controller working.
That being said, the Sonos system seems to work wonderfully, main issue seems to be with the computer.
    Anyone have a solution?
    Brett

Thank you for your idea. However, after having imported the setup of the previous TC and having experienced problems, I had already done a factory reset and configured everything from scratch! Without using the profile. So I think we can safely exclude a problem connected with importing the older profile, which was in fact my first idea.
On the other side, I haven't tried your suggestion to give separate names to the 5 and 2,4 GHz wireless signals. I'll try this evening, as a last attempt before sending the TC back to Apple. BTW, I put my old TC back in place, and apart from the fact that the disk is noisy and almost full it works without a glitch. Which makes a software or configuration issue less likely, I believe.

  • TIme Capsule 2TB and Airport Express Base Station

    Hi,
just received a new mac book pro, time capsule and airport express. I already had a older imac (Early 2008).
my goal is to connect everything in a wifi at the highest possible speed. The airport express servers also as a itunes connection to my stereo.
I followed basic instruction, all is working except that I can't have the speed a 5GHz (I verify the speed by holding the alt key and clicking on the wireless icon in the menubar) I have n but at 2.4GHz.
what are the correct settings for this. I noticed that if I do not have the possibility to set radio modus to n 5GHz only. the version of airport configuration program that came with the time capsule is 5.5 and the time capsule is on 7.5 the airport express on 7.4.2.
    thanks for helping on this.

This looks like you held down the "option" key while you clicked on the Airport icon at the top of your screen.
You were asking about different Radio Modes for the Time Capsule
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab located just below the row of icons
Now you will see the wireless settings.
Hold down the option key when you click on the Radio Mode selection box to see more choices.

  • Time capsule printing and airport express

Just set up a TC and am having a couple of problems:
    1) Cannot print. At first I got a message that the printer could not be found. Went back and reinstalled the printer with correct driver (would not accept auto setup)...now get a message that printing is complete but nothing prints.
    2) Airport Express. On setup, Airport Utility detects both TC and AE. I set up TC and then reconfigure AE to join the wireless network. AE either disappears from Airport Utility or looks as if it is OK, but won't work with iTunes. AE did work with iTunes before I got the TC.
    Any suggestions?

First off - I'm not overly knowledgeable about networking. I have relied on the simplicity of everything for years and it has just worked - until today!
I had a perfectly good dlink router, four or more computers all hooked up to the internet as well as a wireless printer and via Airport Express a color laser, and my iTunes could, via Airport Express, pump music into two spots as well as through my Apple TV. Fantastic!
Sadly - as soon as I plugged in a Time Capsule directly to the cable modem, I could not print from any computer - (although early on I could print on both printers from mine) Now -nada . The Airport Expresses are flashing amber and I am lost. I unplugged my old dlink figuring they would all see the new Time Capsule and automatically do whatever they needed to do. One of the printers is wireless on its own ( no Airport Express) and it doesn't work either on any computer.
It sounds like the first thing you need to do is to reconfigure your AirPort Express units to work with the Time Capsule. The first thing I'd do is to connect to each one with AirPort Utility and do a File/"Save a Copy As" operation to save the configuration details in case you need to restore them. The next step depends on the model(s) of the AirPort Express units. If they are all model A1264 units, then things will be a lot simpler. If any of them are A1084 or A1088 models, then things will be a little more complicated, requiring you to configure things as a "WDS" network.

  • Extending Network With Skh HD, Time Capsule 1TB and Airport Express

    Hi,
I'm struggling to achieve what I thought to be an easy setup process.
    *What I want to achieve?:*
    * Ground Floor - Sky HD Router with Sky Wireless Network & Time Capsule 1 TB(choice to connect Time Capsule by either WAN Ethernet or over wi-fi?)
    * First Floor - IMac and MacMini connected wirelessly, along with Airport Express to extend wireless network
    * Loft - Apple TV connected to Cinema setup, with need to be able to connect to Sky HD Wireless network
Note/Problenms: It doesn't appear to be possible to extend the Sky HD Wireless Network via Time Capsule using the wireless option? Error reads "not able to extend wireless network etc...". Secondly, as a result the WiFi signal in the Loft for the Apple TV HD is 50% approx. The download speeds for movies etc is also sufficiently slow that repeat buffering is required. Not ideal.
    *Current Setup:*
    * Ground Floor - TC connected to Sky HD Router via WAN Ethernet cable. Creating New Network, named exactly the same as the original Sky HD Wireless Network e.g. "SKY08323"
    * First Floor - IMac and MacMini connected wirelessly to SKY08323 network. Airport Express connected wirelessly to same network.
    *Possible Enhancement?*
I've tried a couple of times to extend the range of the Wireless network. I First tried to do this as explained by extending the Sky HD Router network wirelessly (not possible it seems). I then connected via Wan Ethernet and setup TC and AirPort Express to interact over a WDS. TC = Main Base Station and AirPort Express = Relay Station. This seemed to setup ok but once both were restarted both TC and AE were flashing Amber and AE was no longer visible in Airport Utility.
If someone would be kind enough just to outline a step by step approach for setting up my Sky Network and being able to extend it via TC and AE, then I would be really grateful.
Many thanks and Happy New Year!
    Eugene

As you have surmised, you will NOT be able to extend the wireless range of your Sky HD Router with the Time Capsule (TC) ... at least not wirelessly.
You basically have two options: 1) Run Ethernet between the ground floor and the loft, or 2) Consider deploying Powerline adapters. These adapters take advantage of your home's electrical circuit to create a pseudo Ethernet one.
In either case, the two routers would be interconnected by Ethernet and the TC could be place in the loft. You would then reconfigure the TC as a bridge to allow the Sky router to continue to provide both the NAT & DHCP services for all network clients regardless of which router they are connected to. In addition, you would configure the TC to use the same Network Name & wireless security type so that, for example, you could roam with a wireless laptop between floors and still be on the "same" network.

  • Data rate slows over time: Using Time Capsule (4th) and AirPort Express (1st)

Time Capsule using Airport Express to extend network.
Over 3-4 days my data rate gradually gets slower and slower until I have to reboot both TC and AE.
Fresh reboot gets me 10Mbs or better for a while and then slows over time to 2Mbs or less.
I can cable directly to the ISP modem, taking TC and AE out of the equation, and its smokin fast
No hair left to pull out, so any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Mac Address Access Control: Not Enabled
    Using DHCP

You have your wireless channels on auto.. it is usually better to control it.
You will notice I have different names for 2.4ghz and 5ghz.. then I can force the link to either band.
After you set Radio Channel selection to Manual,, click edit. You can then set the channels.
Lock the channels.. ie you take control and you set what the wireless channels will be.. when you extend wireless this works far better. The auto channel system has to run on the Extender.. but since the main base is fixed on the 2.4ghz so it will be also.. the only channel that can flap around is 5ghz (extender) since that is not under my control. Of course it is up to you to determine which channel works best.. I strongly recommend the upper channels for 2.4ghz and the lower channels for 5ghz.
So.. I have set 5ghz to 48 on the main base.. and the auto channel sets it to 149 in the extender.
One strange thing results from my setup .. (amongst many!!)
You cannot name the wireless for 5ghz in the extender.. so in my case the upstairs wireless extender has both 2.4ghz and 5ghz named TC24ghz.. nought that I can do about it. But it is not a big deal.
You can see the result in the wireless diagnostics. The last wireless I have put in the box.. it is named TC24ghz but is in fact running on 5ghz. That is just how the over automated system of the apple routers work.. If I could I would fix it.. and maybe shall via serial console at a later date.

  • Time Capsule green and Airport Express blinking amber

I replaced my AEBX with a Time Capsule and now the AEX configured as an extender blinks amber continuously. Bringing up AirPort Utility and following the AU help instructions to find out why the blinking amber, shows that the AEX is operating normally. In fact, the little faux LED to the left of the AEX icon shows green while the real LED is blinking amber.
The AEX was solid green before installing the TC.
Anyone else seen this? Anyone know what's going on?

I cannot get Airport Utility to see both my Time Capsule and my Airport Express at the same time. When I disconnected from the Time Capsule network it saw the AEx but repeatedly said there was a problem configuring the device. So I am stuck.

  • Using time capsule model A1409 and trying to use it as only backup. Already have Verizon wireless router. Do not know which cable port to use in back of time capsule. And also it is asking for password. Have tried all of mine and it will not work.

Want to us my time capsule model A1409  as only backup. 2 TB hard drive.
Already have Verizon wireless router. Do not want to use Time capsule as router, only back up for iMac.
Do not know which cable port to use in back of time capsule to Ethernet port back of my iMac.
And also it is asking for password for the server John Garland's Time Capsule so Time machine can access it..
Have tried all of passwords can think of and none work.
Held the reset button for one second on back of capsule and do not see if anything happened.
    What a conundrum.
Appreciate any help to get this working.
    Thanks,
    John R

I have a 2TB Timecapsule and really only use it for Time Machine backups. But the Wi-Fi side is used to sync my iPad at times.
    Mine is wiredup thus;
Eth cable from iMac to modem (not the WAN port should you have one),  then eth cable from modem to T/Cap in the WAN port (bottom port with an O sign above it)
I believe when its connected up you may have to set up a wireless network. Follow the instructions to set up Wi-Fi and Network
and then give it a password. The WiFi icon should appear in the menu bar where you can switch it on or off.
Its been sometime since I set it with the help of Apple Techs so I might be a bit rusty.

  • Time Capsule Network and Airport Extreme Configuration

I have a hybrid wireless and wired network in my home. TC is my primary router. I have a switch hanging off of the TC that distributes the ethernet around the home. To extend my wireless reach with an Airport Extreme, can/should I 1) plug the Airport into ethernet at the opposite end of the home, or 2) connect the Airport wirelessly to the TC? What are the implications of both?

The letters (N, B, G) refer to the speed of the wireless network. The higher the letter (N currently) the faster the wireless network. The Airport Extreme & TC's currently sold are the 802.11N version, 802.11 is just a number and refers to a set of standards for wireless local area network. Therefore if you here 802.11 you know they are referring to a wireless network and what ever letter follows (B,G and now N) referrs to the speed of that network. However remember this works at the lowest common denominator. What I mean by that is let's say you have a wireless router (like TC) that works at N speeds and you want it to communicate with a wireless printer but that printer is B speed well your router is going to adjust to the B speed so it can communicate to the printer.
    Hope this helps a little.

  • My computer is macbook white with iOS 10. 6.8, will i able to use the new Airport Time Capsule 2TB and what does it mean administrate the Airport Time Capsule 2TB ?

my computer is macbook white with Mac OS X (10. 6.8), will i able to use the new Airport Time Capsule 2TB and work properly with Time Capsule on my computer to back up wirelessly?
And what does it mean "to administrate" because it was written in requirement of the Airport Time Capsule 2TB ?

You must use a Mac running Lion (10.7.5), Mountain Lion or Mavericks to be able to set up the Time Capsule and make any changes to the settings.
A recent version iPhone or iPad could also be used for this task.
From the Specifications on the Time Capsule:

iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3

  • Why doesn't time capsule appear in airport utility?

I have the 3TB time capsule just bought last year.  It has been working perfectly fine for all of this time when suddenly my internet connection was slowed to a snails pace.  I reset the modem, the time capsule, etc. and nothing worked.  I called comcast and the guy says the modem is out of sync and he reset it and everything was perfect.  Later that day, it slowed again.  When I called Comcast he said everything is good from the cable side it must be the router (in this case the time capsule).  I opened the airport utility and I was connected to wifi but the time capsule doesnt appear.  It says it cant find any base stations.
I googled the web and tried many things including hard reset, updating IPv6 to link-local only, etc.  When I am connected hard wire to the modem it works fine but as soon as i disconnect and go wireless it no longer can find the base station.  The wireless network and speed work fine I just cant connect to the base station for time machine backups, access my drive etc.
    HELP!

Do a full factory reset.. this is different to hard reset and is recommended when you run into issues.
Mountain Lion does have a bug with the TC in lossing it. The latest firmware was supposed to fix the problem but I doubt it is working.. ie 7.6.4 ..
    I would do the following.
    1. Take the firmware back to 7.6.1
You simply hold the option key whilst clicking the number of the version in the airport utility. Select the firmware you want.. and it will do the downgrade.
    2. Factory reset.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    3. Redo the setup with a completely clean set of names.. which are SMB standard.. ie short, 2-20 characters, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Set wireless 5ghz to a different name.
Set security to WPA2 personal with 8-20 character pure alphanumeric password.
Set wireless channels manually .. use 11, 6, 1 for 2.4ghz try each in turn in that order.
Use around 40 and around 150 for 5ghz.
    4. Test with ethernet.. wireless is never a great test. You never know if the issue is somewhere else. Ethernet is more reliable.

  • HT3728 Firmware Update 7.6.4 Error: I uploaded the 7.6.4 firmware update today, and received an error message as it was finalising. As I am using my Time Capsule as the Airport router, I am now no longer able to access it to try to resolve the problem. He

    Dear Support Team,
I agreed to the Time Capsule 7.6.4 update today, but as it was completing, I received an error. It said to close the page and try again.
I use my Time Capsule as my Airport wireless router and now can't access the Time Capsule to re-upload the Firmware update.
Has anyone else had this happen?
Is there a way to resolve the problem?
Do I need to hardwire the Time Capsule? Then what?
    Would really appreciate some help!!
    Thanks everyone.

Factory reset the TC and it should come back to life.
    The Factory Reset.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.
As a rule .. wireless is not reliable enough for mission critical work like firmware upgrades.. (Heck I don't think it is reliable enough for backups).
Apple doesn't insist on wired connections.. some other manufacturers do.. and post warnings not to attempt it over wireless. Warnings inevitably read after the failed firmware update btw.. so perhaps Apple have decided to just save themselves the hassle.
I believe it is just good practice to use ethernet for any time that sitting on a branch.. whilst sawing it off (ie failure will kill any future access).. means you always use ethernet for any setting up of a wireless router.. but you see I am old.. with grey/white hair.. and too many dead modems and routers around me.

I am using TM Unifi with an ASUS RT-N18U Wi-Fi router.  I would like to know could I use Apple AirPort Time Capsule to extend (repeater, booster) my Wi-Fi to a part of the house where the Wi-Fi signal is poor
Yes,, if you plan to connect the AirPort Time Capsule to the ASUS router using an Ethernet cable connection that will remain fixed and permanently installed at all times.
No, if you were planning to have the AirPort Time Capsule connect wirelessly and extend the Asus WiFi signal, since it would not be compatible with another manufacturer's router for that purpose.
Another way of saying the same thing here would be that if you want to extend the network wirelessly, it will take two Apple routers to do so

  • Time Capsule vs. Airport Express via Ethernet

Air;ort Express is connected to a DSL modem with an Ethernet cable. Time Machine is in turn connected directly to my MacBook Pro, again by Ethernet. Obviously something here is wrong, since the Time Machine persist in showing a blinking yellow light.
I think that this used to work but no longer. How did I sdrew up?

Does that in turn suggest that I should connect the Time Capsule directly to Airport Express?
when possible always run ethernet.. it is fast and reliable.. only when there is no other choice use wireless to link routers.. it is always poor.
You can use wireless from laptop to the Express or the TC.. that is fine.. but keep the wireless usage to something close and just once.. no double hop over wireless.
If you have ethernet there, use it.
Simply put the TC in bridge mode.. that is router bridge.
And make sure you are creating a wireless network on the TC.. same name and same security setting and password as the Express.. then the laptop can connect to whichever it is nearest to.
If you need complete diagrams or screenshots just ask.
