Time capsule airport has yellow light on

having problems with my time warner modum which is then hooked to time capsule airport. I have two computers hardwired to the airport but only one of the computers will work this way the second has to use the wireless to aquire the internet. I do not know what is going on. After my internet crashed last night now the yellow light is on the time capsule also. This problem has exhisted for some time now and I just keep ignoring it because it just makes me crazy! Does anyone have a clue as what to do?

A persistent, flashing amber light indicates that any of the several potential conditions may require your attention:
The base station has not yet been configured because it is new, or the reset switch has been set.
You have selected a security configuration that is not recommended.
One of several other conditions, such as a disconnected Ethernet cable or invalid IP address has been detected.

If you run the AirPort Utility, it will show an amber circle on the summary page next to the area(s) causing the problem. Click on this amber circle and it should provide an explanation. Please post back your results.

  • Time capsule airport has wireless speed under 1mbps

Had an an Apple Support call and changes in Channel to 9 improved speed but it degraded over night. Also tried changing to 2.6 ghz but no improvement. Can connect Time capsule to MacPro via ethernet cable and get 25+ mbps. That's fine for MacPro but have other wireless devices  in home connecting to wireless and speed is unacceptable.

    Do the full deal.
Reset all names to SMB standard.. ie short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.
eg.. TC name.. TCFred wireless name 2.4ghz.. TC24ghz wireless name for 5ghz.. (make this different) TC5ghz
All passwords and security keys same.. but you can have 8-12 pure alphanumeric characters no spaces.
    Set wireless to a/n - b/g
Set wireless to one of the 3 non overlapping channels for 2.4ghz 1, 6, 11 and test.
Set 5ghz wireless to lower channels.. whatever is available.. 40 is default. if no good try the high end.
Change the firmware back to 7.5.2 and after a factory reset.. do all of the above again.. just to make sure.
If you still get very slow speed.. return the TC as faulty.. I don't think it is.. it is just a bug.

  • Time Capsule-AirPort Express-WDS not working together

According to everything I've read here, I've configured this properly, but it doesn't seem to be working. If anyone can help me troubleshoot this I would greatly appreciate it.
I have a new Time Capsule acting as my main wireless base station; it has a manually-configured static IP address, is plugged into my Verizon FIOS router, and is set to distribute IP addresses over wireless using DHCP. I have it set to run a 5 GHz network in addition to the regular 2.4 GHz network. I have an older AirPort Express that I want to use to extend the range of the 2.4 GHz network (the Express can only do 802.11b/g, not 802.11n), in part because we have some older devices in the house that I don't want to slow down the 802.11n network, and in part because the 802.11b/g signal doesn't reach all parts of the house very strongly. So I told the Time Capsule to make its network extendable, told the AirPort Express to participate in a WDS network as a WDS relay, and entered the MAC address of the Time Capsule's 2.4GHz network as the WDS main. Result: flashing amber light on the AirPort Express, which no longer shows up in the AirPort Utility; I had to do a hard reset in order to get the Express back (and then it had to be reconfigured again, of course). At the moment I have it just joining my wireless network, and that works -- green light -- but of course doesn't allow the Express to extend the range of the wireless network.
What am I doing wrong here?

Before there was dual band, we always told users that if they used WDS, the entire network would revert to "g", even if the Time Capsule, AirPort Express, etc were capable of "n" performance.
Your findings seem to confirm that this happens with a dual band as well.
I think it's well worth it to get the AirPort Express 802.11n. Then you can reconfigure the Time Capsule back to "Create a wireless network" and check the box to "Allow this network to be extended"
The Express"n" would then be configured to "Extend a wireless network". I use this setup and would highly recommend it. There may be a slight bandwidth loss due to overhead, but the performance is light years ahead of WDS.
If you are using the same network name for both bands on the Time Capsule, then I believe by default the Express will extend the 2.4 GHz "n", "g" and "b" band. This makes sense for most users since 5 GHz signals do not travel well over distance or penetrate obstructions well.
IF...you want to extend the 5 GHz band, the only way that I know how to do this is click Wireless Network Options on the wireless setup page for the Time Capsule and enable the option to assign a different name for the 5 GHz network.
Then you will have to configure the Express to extend this specific 5 GHz network. I never had much luck extending 5 GHz, and I wanted my iPhone to be able to use the network across the house, so I went with the simpler one network name for both bands and extended the 2.4 GHz network.
If you have a "g" device joining the extended network, it may tend to slow the "n" devices down slightly...when the "g" device is active, but it won't drag everything down to "g" levels. When the "g" device is not active, "n" devices will run at "n" speeds.
BTW, the ethernet port on the AirPort Express is active when you configure it to "extend a wireless network". This can come in handy for hooking up DVD players, etc that need an internet connection for firmware updates and extra features.
Follow up....I tried a very quick reconfiguration of my dual band AirPort Extreme (same router that the Time Capsule users) and AirPort Express using the WDS arrangement and everything did indeed drop way down in speed and performance.
Post back if you have questions. Happy to help.

  • Time Capsule Airport Connection with Deutsche Telekom 300HS VDSL Modem

I just swithched my Deutsche Telekom connection to VDSL 50 but can no longer connect to the internet.  There are a couple of configurations I have tried:
    a.    The Speedport 300 HS modem connected directly to the Time Capsule.
    b.    As above, but with the Speedport W700V router in between the modem and Time Capsule.
The green light on the modem is illuminated to confirm the VDSL is available.
Could somebody please advise the correct settings in the Airport Utility to make either configuration above work?
    Thanks,
    Paul

This is the easiest one.. just use TC in bridge. You go to the airport utility, manual setup, select internet tab and under connection sharing.. off bridge mode.
    a.    The Speedport 300 HS modem connected directly to the Time Capsule.
This is harder as it depends on the authentication system used by your VDSL..
The TC has limited options.. either DHCP.. so the vdsl has to pass the public IP as in half bridge type system.. or it has to be PPPoE authentication.. as that is the only other alternative offered.

  • I have a time machine backup file on a USB hard drive.  I bought a time capsule / airport extreme, flat 3TB.  I wish to transfer the backup file from the usb hard drive to the time capsule hard drive.  10.6.8

I have a time machine backup file on a USB hard drive.  I bought a time capsule / airport extreme, flat 3TB.  I wish to transfer the backup file from the usb hard drive to the time capsule hard drive.  10.6.8

Unfortunately, Time Machine backups that are stored on a drive that has been connected directly to a Mac are completely different than Time Machine backups that are stored on a Time Capsule.
Frankly, it is not worth the effort and trouble to try to transfer the old backups to the new Time Capsule.....my opinion....having done this in the past.
It is possible though, but I would not recommend it due to the complexity and downsides involved with this. To give you an idea of how to do this, check out this support article.
    http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
Even if you transfer the "old" backups over to the Time Capsule successfully, Time Machine will not simply "add on" to the old backups.
Time Machine will make a new complete backup of your Mac and then add incremental backups from that point.
My advice.....start a new backup on the Time Capsule and move forward. Keep the USB hard drive around for a month, maybe 2 or 3 in case you need to go back to an old backup for some reason.  At that time, you will not likely need the old backups at all since you will have a current 2-3 month history of new backups.  At that point, you can erase the USB drive and use it for another purpose.

  • Can't copy with LaCie Network Attached Storage and Time Capsule/Airport

    Hi,
I bought a Time Capsule to replace my recently faulty modem/router Linksys AG241 and in preparation of buying my first mac in the next few months.
Right now the network is as follows:
    — 1 Linksys AM200 modem connected to the TC by ethernet and set to bridge mode
    — 2 windowsXP pcs attached by ethernet to the Time Capsule
    — 1 NAS (LaCie 2Big Network) attached by ethernet to the Time Capsule
Despite some initial problems configuring the modem in bridge mode, the present problem is the following:
Everytime I try to copy a file (it can be either an 4MB file or an 800MB one) I get this error window:
    — Cannot copy "Filename": the specified network name is no longer available
Even when copying a file from one Share of the disk to another! However, have no trouble copying 1KB file, for example.
I've been searching throughout the internet for some days now but couldn't find any answer.
This LaCie NAS External Disk is ethernet-only and can only be connected to a switch or a router. It worked before with my older modem/router. I changed the ethernet cable by another one and I get the same result.
The Time Capsule is cofigured to distribute IPs through DHCP. Right now, I even have enabled the DHCP reservations to assign a static IP to the NAS, and to the Pcs. STill the same result.
This happens on both pcs. Still haven't tried with a wireless device yet (I don't have one).
Can anyone help me solve this?

Ok. I've ran a test on a friend's network in order to clarify if the LaCie NAS was the hardware causing this issue.
Well, it isn't. The NAS worked fine on this other network setting - which uses a different router, modem and 2 different computers.
The test ocurred in Wireless G, though, not by Ethernet connection with the computers.
*So I guess the problem must be on my Time Capsule or Modem?*
    *Possibly a configuration issue.*
Does anyone has/had some problem connecting Ethernet External Disks on a Time Capsule/Airport that can share some Solution ?
    Please, Help!?

Do i need to set up the time capsule airport before i start backing up using time machine with my time capsule?

Some setup is generally required.. because the TC is a network device.. not a plug in via usb.. therefore it has to exist somewhere in your network.

  • Time Capsule/Airport Extreme is the same as a Netgear router, right?

Idiotic question, I know. I just wanted to be sure before I bought it. I have Comcast cable internet and I'm leasing one of their Netgear Wireless Cable Modem Gateway - CG814WG routers. That router is horrible (the connection dies when my wife is on her computer and I'm playing Halo 3) and I want to replace it with Time Capsule so I can have a better connection with my computers and XBox 360. The Time Capsule/Airport Extreme can replace my Netgear with no problems, right? I believe I'll have a much better network experience without losing connection like I did with my Netgear.
Side note: The internet feed to the house is fine. My cable tv is fine and the line is good, so I'm figuring it has to be the horrible router since everyone else has complained about that model from Netgear as well. I'm just hoping Time Capsule will be my ultimate replacement.

Excellent. I did contact my ISP and cross-referenced their list with the bestselling cable modems on Amazon.com. Looks like the Motorola SB5120 Surfboard modem works great. It also has an ethernet port and cable so I guess that'll connect easily to Time Capsule since you said I only need an ethernet cable.
I guess I might have to make sure the initial setup goes good, in which case I might be back here to make sure I did that right.
Thanks for the help though. At least I'll know that I'll have the right hardware that works with everything I have.

  • Guest network feature of Time Capsule/Airport Extreme in conflict with DNS on OS X Server?

Hi, I want use the guest network feature of Time Capsule/Airport Extreme which requires an external DNS server but my OS X Server is the dns server...Can I configure server and airport with an external dns without messing up my OS server?
    Thx Ron

If you want to use the guest network while also using your server for DNS - you will need to do the following:  It's a bit painful - but it works.
On your Airport Device (Airport Extreme or Time Capsule) - in the Internet tab you will need to do one of the following:
    1)  Leave the DNS Servers Blank - which they will default to the DNS servers provided by your ISP.
    2)  Actually enter your ISP's DNS servers.
    3)  Enter Open DNS servers (I use 208.67.222.222 / 208.67.220.220).
The DNS servers specified in the airport device must be internet routable addresses (if you are going to use the guest network functionality) - and cannot refer to private ip address (e.g. 10.x.x.x, 192.168.x.x, etc).
Here is the painful part...on all of the devices (Macs, PCs, phones, ipads - that will be used on your "private" network 10.0.1.x - you will need to provide static DNS setting (but still allow DHCP to assign the devices IP address).  You will specify 10.0.1.13 as primary DNS and 208.267.222.222 (or your ISP's primary DNS IP).
One you do this - your devices that you permanently use on your local network - will still use your server for DNS - and the external DNS - should your DNS server happen to be down.
Anyone visiting your house - will connect to your guest network - and automatically be DHCP assigned a guest IP address - and the external DNS servers that you specified in the Airport Extreme device.
This has been working great for me.  I suspect that the guest network functionality is flawed in the Airport Extreme/Express and Time Capsule.  Since I do not have another router that provides a guest network - I cannot say whether this issues is limited to the Airport devices - or whether this workaround would need to be done - regardless of which brand of router is providing the guest network.
In a nutshell - your household permanent devices will have to specify static DNS servers - but your guests will connect seamlessly without having to change and risk messing up any of their device settings.
If this solution works for you - Please be sure to click either "This solved my problem" or "This helped me".

  • HOWTO: Connect Alien Wireless Hot Spot To Time Capsule/Airport

I switched over to a wireless device as my ISP, as my local Cable company boosted the bill 50%, and there is no DSL or any other service.  A nice '10GB' plan.  I should be able to eck by on that.
Naturally, my little 4G 'Hot Spot' works great with a computer or two connected to it wirelessly.  But there are no ethernet ports, and it basically 'blocks' when a Time Machine backup goes through it to the Time Capsule, when that connects to it.  Its little CPU is too busy with that backup to respond to other requests.  It's itty bitty humming bird heart can't take it.  Sigh.
After discovering that Apple does not allow one to bridge (aka 'extend') a wireless network unless it supports 'WDS' was an annoyance.  Naturally the little pocket-sized hot spot box doesn't support 'WDS'.  The point where I discovered that Apple's firmware DISABLES the switched ethernet ports when it connected to an existing wireless network was especially annoying.
After a little brainstorming and searching around I determined that THERE IS A WAY!:  Old School!
Various manufacturers make a device called a 'Wireless Ethernet Bridge'.  What this is intended for is ethernet peripherals like game consoles or printers or computers that don't have a wireless connection.  It connects to the wireless network FOR an ethernet wired device that can't.  Even ones that can't because the manufacturer is being an [expletive deleted].
So, basically jump through the hoops required to configure your bridge to connect to your wireless network, whatever it may be, plug it into the 'WAN' port of the Airport/Time Capsule router, and set the time capsule/airport to 'Bridge' the connection.
    Green light!
I posted the gruesome details on this site...

Looks like i'm having the same problem too...I'm unable to configure my new 2TB Time Capsule to my Etisalat elife connection at home!
I have connected the cable from modem on the wall directly to TC..able to set up the TC but wifi doesnt work!
clueless who to ask or call....can someone help?

  • Cannot join time capsule airport network from iPad 2 or iPhone 4

I have recently setup a new time capsule airport base station network with my new iMac (27-inch, late 2012) running OSX 10.8.2. Wi-Fe network works fine for internet access and printing from the iMac but I cannot join the wi-fi network from our iPad 2 or iphones. The network is seen in the wi-fi setup when wi-fi is turned on with the ipad and phone but does not establish a connection. An IP address and subnet mask show under the DHCP settings but the connection is not established. (Continuous revolving wheel).
    Any help would be appreciated.

The airport utility in Mountain Lion is a toyland version.. see bottom of post for installing v5.6 which improves the ability to actually make the TC do what you want.
For whatever reason the iphone/ipad seem sensitive to wireless channels.. which Apple auto rotate.. I think it is bluetooth connection stuff.
Anyhow jump in and set the following.
Wireless should have strictly SMB names.. short no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
    Use WPA2 Personal security.
Lock the wireless channel for 2.4ghz.. try in the following order.. 11, 6, 1 (those are the only non-overlapping channels) you can try in turn for which is best but if 11 works well stick to it.. Outside USA you can also use 13.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Best configuration to extend wifi with Time Capsule & Airport Express

In my house I have a Fritzbox wifi router on the ground floor as my primary internet access.  I have an ethernet cable going to the 3rd floor study where the Fritzbox signal is relatively weak.  I purchased a Time Capsule as a backup device, but also wanted to extend the Fritzbox wifi network by plugging the ethernet cable in to the TC.  I was not successful in extending the network, so I had to create a new network.  When moving from downstairs to upstairs, my iphone keeps the connection to the (now weak) wifi network and I have to manually change to the (stronger) TC wifi network.
Additionally, I used to be able to successfully extend the downstairs wifi using my Airport Express (and also managed to have my speakers plugged into this for wireless usage), but do not want to additionally complicate my set-up.
So, what is the best way to connect the following equipment, ideally with the same network name, to ensure I always use the strongrst signal automatically:
Third floor:          iMac,    Macbook,   Time Capsule,  Airport Express
Ethernet cable from ground floor to 3rd floor
Ground floor:     Fritzbox wifi connected to internet

You must configure the Bridge Mode setting as the very last step before you Update the settings, otherwise the setting will change automatically.
In other words, you can change the setting to Bridge Mode, but if you make any other changes before you click Update, the Bridge Mode setting will not take effect.
Or, if you see any error messages about DHCP conflicts or Double NAT....the AirPort is not in Bridge Mode...even though you might think it is. Check the settings again.
will I still be able to set up an additional 5GHz network in parallel?
    Yes
