Time Capsule, Airtunes, and Apple TV - can it be done?

Hi,
Long-time lurker, second-time poster!
Here's my situation:
I have a huge amount of music (all Apple Lossless, so it takes up loads of space) spread over a MacBook Pro and a Windows laptop.
I'd like to move everything to a Time Capsule acting as a network drive (so it's all in one place and to free up HD space on my laptops), then put the Time Capsule through my AirPort Express into my music system. From what I've read, this seems to be possible, but still means having to have a laptop switched on to navigate my library in iTunes.
Is there some way to use the Time Capsule/Airtunes solution with Apple TV, so I can browse my music collection on the telly and then play it through my stereo, without needing to use a laptop?
I don't use iTunes for video - only music - so hopefully that will make things simpler....
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Imagine the combined unit with synchronised audio/video streaming to an external sound system - even the wireless iPod touch could join the party with Apple TV as the central digital hub. A product like this would be as big a revolution as the iPod itself! Price tag, i'd pay up to £500 for such a device - what do you reckon?
At home I'm using an Epson HD projector instead of a Hi-Def TV. All that's missing is wireless, synchronised audio (to the AEX which connects by optical cable to my Apple Hi-Fi, remember those?). The TV here is my old G4 iMac and EyeTV. Elgato disappoints though, they still haven't enabled MPEG-4 HD as we're using in Europe and elsewhere. I just love the swivel screens of the old iMacs, so convenient. Unfortunately I have way too much digital material to fit on an Apple TV so I'm not buying one until the hard disk space increases, then I'll shift all the content from the G5 onto AppleTV and couple it with a 1TB Time Capsule. That's the plan at least

Trying to see our time capsule from a samsung tablet, can it be done?

    What does "see" mean?
You can connect to internet.. that should be no problem.. but set wireless correctly.. using correct windows type names, not APPLE NAMES.. with spaces and illegal characters like apostrophe.
    Use wpa2 personal security..
If you mean hard disk access.. that depends.. can galaxy tablet open a network drive..
Set the hard disk to windows name.. ie no spaces..
in file sharing, turn on the guest account to read and write access.
Put the correct workgroup into the TC.. generally WORKGROUP.

  • Can I Partition a Time Capsule? and more...

My existing setup consists of an Airport Extreme wirelessly supporting 2 MacBooks ("MBs") 5 iOS devices, 2 WiFi/Airprint printers and then by wire (Ethernet) a couple of other devices.  In addition, the Extreme has a USB external hard drive visible/accessible to both MBs. Both MBs have their own external hard drives configured as Time Machines. All devices have latest software upgrades/updates.
I am thinking of replacing the Extreme with a 3TB Time Capsule ("TC") and I propose to Partition the TC's drive into 3 – with one partition supporting MB1's TM, the second supporting MB2's TM, and the third partition supporting/acting like a common hard drive (the same as exists external on the Extreme).  The existing external hard drives acting as TMs would be set aside and saved for TM recoveries; the TC situate TMs would simply commence as new TMs (I envision difficulties not worth the effort in moving the existing TM backups to the TC).
Query 1:  Can the latest 3TB Time Capsule be partitioned as I have proposed? (The reason I pose the question is a series of discussions dating back to 2012 that indicate a TC cannot be partitioned but the current Apple Store page for the 3TB TC  indicates a TC can support multiple TMs:  "you can back up all the Mac computers in your home to a central location.") A review indicates the TC established at least two TMs automatically, but I'd like to also dedicate some space for a third partition non-TM drive….so, the Q – can I partition a TC?
Query 2:  Would I just be better off not trying to partition the TC and just letting it support two TMs automatically and plugging in a separate hard drive, as I currently have?  (Why hasn't Apple upgraded the USB connection to 3.0? oh, well, they probably will a month after I buy mine, right?  )
Query 3:  When moving the existing MBs from desk to couch it is necessary to first eject the existing TM external hard drives. If the TMs are moved to (or replaced by) a TC that would appear to no longer be necessary – because they aren't physically connected anyway. (Having typed this it seems so obvious, but….I'm asking because I just want to confirm.)
Any other suggestions/observations/watch-its would be welcomed. Thanks.

The Time Capsule drive cannot be partitioned in a traditional sense unless you pull the drive from the Time Capsule (which voids the warranty), place the drive in a SATA to USB caddy or enclosure, attach the caddy directly to a Mac, and then use Disk Utility for the formatting operation. Once that is done, then you have to reinstall the drive back in the Time Capsule.  Not a job for the faint of heart....and best left to a technician.
The Time Capsule "as is", can support multiple Time Machine backups from different Macs, but is basically a free for all as far as space is concerned. Time Machine backs up to a special file called a sparsebundle on the Time Capsule, and while it is possible to modify or limit the size of the sparsebundle file for each Mac, it is a complex operation. This document will give you an idea of the process:

Much simpler, therefore much better to do it this way.

Time Machine will automatically back up to the Time Capsule once you have it set up. No need to mount, or eject the drive, etc.

The current version of the Time Capsule will be two years old in June....and Apple traditionally introduces new products in June.

  • I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for several years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both?

I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for a couple years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both the iMac and MacBook Air? I don't mind losing earlier backups. I have excluded some items from backing up, but since the Airport Time Capsule is full, I can't even begin to back up the MacBook Air.

    On your Mac.......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click on the Disks tab at the top of the window
    Click Erase Disk
On the next window that appears, select the Quick Erase option, then click Erase
The operation will only take a few minutes.
Now you are ready to start new backups of both Macs.  Back up one Mac first, then back up the other.  Do not try to back up both Macs as the same time.

  • Just bought Time capsule 2tb from apple No Airport CD in the package

I just bought the time capsule from an Apple store,  The setup manual called about a Airport CD which was not in the package,  I have setup my wifi at home, however I have to setup a Windows Vista (already joined the time capsule) for printing,  The manual stated using the Airport CD to installl Bonjour for windows.
Should i have a cd with the purchase?
with my dlink router  (which i just replaced with Time capsule) i was able to set time restrictions for all computers on the wi-fi ,  when to access the web. mac address restrictions,  I do not appear to have that capability with the time capsule.  is this correct?  I configured the time capsule via  the airport utility on my mac,  no additional cd.  by not having the cd am i missing additional confguration parameters that I can tweak?

by not having the cd am i missing additional confguration parameters that I can tweak?
No, assuming that you have the most recent version of AirPort Utility, which is 5.5.3. You can open AirPort Utility and click on the AirPort Utility menu next to the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
    Click Check for Updates.
Using the Timed Access feature on the Time Capsule, you can set up individual restrictions for devices that are allowed to connect to the wireless.

Thinking of purchasing Time Capsule.... Can I access my documents saved on (Home Network) Time Capsule from another Network??? For instance, I can access my documents saved on MyBookLive (which is connected to my wifi) from ANY wifi connection... Like when I'm at school I can download documents stored on my MyBookLive at home.... I love this feature... But I would prefer to keep my products apple... So my question is can I access my documents from ANYWHERE with Time Capsule???
    Other products I have: MacBook (2009 limited edition it's aluminum) two iPad2 (2012) iPhone 5 (2012) two iphone4 iPod touch (2010) iPod Nano (2011)

Remote access to TC is allowed by BTMM and iCloud service.
Not for ipad or iphone.. only the Macbook although I think people have some work arounds..
NOTE. Your school firewall should block it. If I was still working in network admin I would. ie you are risking the whole network to get access to files unchecked for viruses.. and please don't just say Macs don't get viruses, you can still be the source of the infection even if you don't suffer the disease. Just a carrier.

Okay so I set up my Time Capsule already and is now backing up 2 of my iMacs. Works great. What I want to know is how to use the TC to directly store files? I want to do this to delete some files on iMac 20inch but still have them on the TC for future reference..eg some movies on iTunes. I want to directly save them on the drive so I can delete them from iTunes and gain some storage. (Ps on iMac 20 inch (it's almost full - 320 GB) when I enter time machine, a tab comes up on finder which reads "Time Machine backups" it's able to be ejected like a disc or a connected device. On the iMac 20 inch, I dragged some files onto there as if using it like a hard drive. Is this the correct method? Then I went to my 27inch iMac and saw the "Time Machine Backups" hoping to see the files I dragged from the 20inch iMac. But the files were not there except a folder that said "Backups.backupdb". Can someone help me?

It's not a good idea to use a network disk for both Time Machine backups and other things.  By design Time Machine will eventually consume all the space on its output disk, which will then cause problem for your other files.  I'd store those other files on an external disk connected to the Time Capsule.  The problem with that is that Time Machine will only back up files that are local to your Mac.  That means that you'll only have one copy of the files on or attached to your Time Capsule.
By the way, you've been misled by poor field labeling on this forum into typing a large part of your message into the field intended for the subject.  In the future just type a short summary of your post into that field and type the whole message into the field below that.

Can I define the time periods when my children's devices have access to the wi-fi network?
Yes, using the Timed Access feature in AirPort Utility, you can setup specific rules for each wireless device which define the exact timeframe each day that the device will be allowed to connect to the wireless network.
    Example....junior's iPhone can connect.....
    Everyday......Between.....9 AM and 10:00 PM
    or
    Weekdays.......Between......4 PM and 9 PM
and Weekends.....Between......9 AM and 11 PM
At the same time, your own personal devices will have Unlimited Access at all times.

  • My Time Capsule expired and no longer works. My printer (a HP) will now not work as it still wishes to connect through the Time Capsule. It will not allow itself be recognised through a USB connection to my Mac. Anyone got any ideas?

My Time Capsule expired and no longer works. My printer (a HP) will now not work as it still wishes to connect through the Time Capsule. It will not allow itself be recognised through a USB connection to my Mac. Anyone got any ideas?

You will need to install the printer on your Mac
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Open Print & Fax
Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list
Wait for your printer to appear in the next box, then click it to highlight it
Click Add at the lower right
Be sure to select the correct printer when you try to print as you will see your printer listed twice. Good idea to make the printer now installed on your Mac the default printer so you do not have to choose which printer to use each time you want to print.
You can also go into Print & Fax, select the printer associated with the Time Capsule and click the - (minus) button if you want to delete that location.

My time capsule is full.  How can I delete older info?

You can enter the Time Machine restore interface and find files that can be removed from the backup disk itself to conserve space. To do this, select the file(s) and from the Action pop-up menu (gear icon) in the Time Machine Finder window choose "Delete All Backups of...". Be sure to only delete files you are sure you won't need or want to restore later.

  • I just purchased a time capsule 1TB and the installation instructions don't really say weather I have to run a ethernet wire from my modem or will simply plugging it in run it....wire or not? sorry folks I'm a bit of a computer illerate

Question Do I have to wire the time capsule to my modem or will it perform wirelessly . I am just using it for everyday backup   thanks community

A Time Capsule is a combination wireless router and server grade hard drive. You can get rid of your existing wireless router if you want and replace it with the Time Capsule. This way you can use the same wireless network for your Internet access and for your Time Machine backups done wirelessly in the background via the same wireless network.

My os is 10.8.4. Airport Utility is 6.3. When I try to pull backups, time capsule says: 'The folder “Pictures” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.'. So I cannot use Time capsule to back up so what gives?

Did you use migration assistant when you set up the computer?
TM will treat this as a different computer and permissions issues can arise from that.
Pondini is the expert on that stuff.. hopefully he can drop in.
But I recommend you read all the FAQ to do with restore.. Q14-17.
And then look at the permissions issues he lists in troubleshooting.

How do I configure the AX to connect to the hub's wireless network? It will only scan one base station Airport Express at a time in the Airport Utility. I think what I am trying to do is use the hub as a router to the two AX's. Is there a specific way to set this up?
To set up the AX to join a wireless network as a "Wireless Client," using the AirPort Utility, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    Launch the AirPort Utility.
    Select the AX.
If not already connected to the AX's wireless network, go ahead and switch to it when prompted.
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Network Name: <type in the network name/SSID of the wireless network that you want to join or select it from the pop-up menu>
Wireless Security: None OR, if you are using security on your wireless network:
Wireless Security: <Select the appropriate level of security for the existing wireless network: WPA/WPA2 Personal | WPA2 Personal>
Password: <enter your wireless network security password>
Verify Password: <re-enter the same security password>
Click Update to write the new settings to the AX.
