Time Capsule Allocating Bandwidth on it's Own?

I've been using my Time Capsule for several months now and I'm convinced that there's some suspicious stuff going on in the background. I first noticed the problem back home in the States where I had pretty high-bandwidth before installing it. After I began using the TC as my router, the internet speeds were noticeably slower, but not enough to cause alarm because my connection was fast enough to begin width.
Then I moved to Africa where I set up the same system. Here, the wireless spectrum is far less crowded than it is in the States so I figured I get better performance out of all my Wifi gear. I'm using the TC as the main router and hub, several airport expresses scattered around the house are connected to it wirelessly, a printer and hard drive connected to the TC for printing and streaming movies wirelessly. Internet is far more expensive here. The connection is only 128kbps split (64 up and 64 down) so any complications are very noticeable. It was obvious right away I was having problems.
So I turned everything that might be using bandwidth from the router completely off, so that it's essentially just my Time Capsule and my laptop and I'm noticing that my internet bandwidth is still being hogged by the TC. I had my local ISP print out a report of my bandwidth usage and it shows that I'm using my entire 64kbps for uploads at ALL TIMES while using my TC as the router.
So to test my theory, I unplugged the TC and plugged the ethernet cable into my laptop. Now I've got my bandwidth back. The same report from the ISP shows that I have the full spectrum free until I begin using the network.
I'm only using the TC as a router, distributing wifi to my Macbook, iPhone, iMac and a PC. I only 'Back up to Time Machine' with an ethernet cable because it's faster and doesn't disturb the network. Even then I only back up one a month or so.
My question is why on earth would the Time Capsule be hogging all this internet bandwidth when it's not even really in use? I have a few tools for measuring the throughput of my Wifi devices (Airport Flow and Airport Utility) and I can see that the bottleneck isn't happening in the signal it's broadcasting. The bottleneck seems to be occurring at the actual input. Somehow the Time Capsule is trying to allocate my bandwidth in ways that I don't want or need it to. Is there a way to stop this?

Because the TC and Mountain Lion is buggy.. 11 days is great.. loads of people have to do it every day.

Time Capsule can't find it's own hard disk every week and a half

I purchased the 2 teirabyte Time Capsle and received it in the mail around the 5th of this month. Aproximately every 11 days or so, Time Capsle can't find its own hard drive. I have to keep going into the Airport utility and manually selecting it. I thought this was suposed to be automatic?
My set up:
Time Capsle is the only wireless router in my house.
Backups are set to be done to Time Capsle only
I have an external hard drive attached containing movies and things on it so i can access them wirelessly.
The network itself is password protected.
I do not understand why it is easier to backup to an external hard drive then to Time Capsle.

WiFi bandwidth required to access Time Capsule hard disk

Hey all,
Recently I moved, switched, houses. In this new house I have put my Time Capsule in the living room, and my computer is in the bedroom.
Ever since I did that, I had troubles accessing Time Capsule hard drive. It would often get disconnected, Time Machine could not "find backup disk", streaming video was not working, and more.
At first I thought that in the move I managed to bump TC a bit too hard and that maybe hard drive itself was damaged. Then I moved my MBP to kitchen, to do some work there (kitchen overlooks living room, there is a direct visual link to TC from there, no walls in between).
Taaa-daaaa! Connection to Time Capsule and the hard drive inside was perfect again.
However, all of the WiFi signal indicators, on both my Mac and other iOS devices are full when I am in my bedroom. The signal is therefore strong enough to make these devices think there is a 5/5 signal quality. But obviously that is wrong signaling. Not even Air Port utiliy gave any clues that even tho WiFi signal was 5/5 the actual bandwidth was not even close sufficient for optimal access to Time Capsule's hard disk. Which is just silly.
Dear Apple, would it be possible to implement some sort of speed check into Air Port Utility which actually checks _REAL_ state of bandwidth and then advises what to do; "Please move closer to the Time Capsule Basestation, bandwidth is too low to access".
I will say it again; the WiFi indicators are all 5/5, and everything regarding regular internet access and similar works awesome. But connection to hard disk obviously requires epic signal strength and no software indicates that.

If the Time Capsule is providing a wireless network signal, an Internet connection does not need to exist to move files from the Mac to the Time Capsule, or vice versa.
Log onto the Time Capsule wireless network
Open Macintosh HD
Look for the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading on the left side of the window
Click on the Time Capsule icon and a folder named Data (unless you have renamed it) will appear to the right
Double click Data to mount the drive on the Mac's desktop
Open the drive on the desktop and you can drag/drop files over to the destination that you choose on the Mac.
Once the file transfer is complete, double check to make sure that the files are back on your Mac and everything is working properly. Then, you can erase the Time Capsule hard drive.

Adding second backup client to time capsule after first has filled drive?

I'm trying to add a second Time Machine client to my Time Capsule. I've had it for a while and the first client has filled the drive. The problem is there isn't enough space free on the Time Capsule for the second client. Is there a way to free up some space so I can add the second client? How do I manage how much space gets allocated to each?

Hi swills. First, click the Time Machine Dock icon and enter the TM 'star field' interface. Then go all the way back to the oldest backups. Go up to the action menu (gear icon) and select "Delete Backup". Do this with several of the oldest backups. This will free up needed space.
Then you need to compact the existing disk image.
First, turn OFF Time Machine Backups on all Macs backing up to the Time Capsule (TC).
Next, open a Finder window and click on your TC in the Sidebar.
If you don't see a blue share folder, you may need to click the "Connect As..." button and enter your Time Capsules password. (Note: NOT your own username and password.)
Double-click the blue folder that appears in the finder window. The sparsebundle should now be visible. DO NOT mount it, just leave the window open.
Now, launch Terminal from the Utilities folder.
At the prompt type in:
+hdiutil compact+
...and then hit the Space bar so that there is a space after +hdiutil compact+.
Next, drag the sparsebundle in question from the Finder window into the Terminal window. This will complete the command.
Now, with the Terminal window in focus, hit Enter.
Eventually, you will see something like this...
+Starting to compact…+
+Reclaiming free space…+
+Finishing compaction…+
+Reclaimed 5.4 GB out of 217.9 GB possible.+
Repeat this procedure for each sparsebundle contained on your TC.
Finally, remember to turn Time Machine backups back ON on all Macs backing up to the TC.
Obviously, if the other Mac still does not have enough space for it's first backup then you will need to repeat the above to free up further space. let us know if this resolves your issue. Cheers!

Arp table modified by time capsule?!?!?

I have the following strange behaviour on my network and no idea what could be wrong:
First the description of my network:
     Class C 192.168.2.0 with several machines connected to LAN and WLAN. I run a DNS and DHCP server.
     One of the devices is an Apple TV wih IP 192.168.2.4 (static address, connection via WLAN). The device which makes the trouble
     is a time capsule - which also has an static address (192.168.2.7 via LAN, WLAN is disabled).
     As long as the time capsule is offline, the route to the apple tv is fine. So sending pings to the apple tv behave as expected. After switching
      the time capsule on, the arp entry for the apple tv is changed to the mac address of the time capsule.
     This also happens when I switch on my second time capsule. In this case the second time capsule is giving its MAC address to the
    apple tv.
     I solved the problem by entering a permanent arp entry for the apple tv.
     But still I have no clue what is going on. Any ideas?

Yes, I have made several router restarts. What I found out today was, that if the apple tv is in sleep mode, its
IP address is bound to the MAC address of the time capsule. After a wakeup the own MAC address is
restored. Attached I have the result of a
ping atv
I think it is nomal, that a device is offline, but why does a different device "hijack" it's IP address?

External HD hooked up to Time Capsule?

Can you hook up an external harddrive to Time Capsule and use it as an "air disk" like AE?
I was thinking of using TC for Time Machine, and the external to store backups of specific folders. Will this work? Thanks!

Any hard disks attached to the Time Capsule’s USB port will also appear here as blue share folders. To mount them on your desktop double-clicking their blue folders. If you had a separate password setup for those disks in Airport Utility then enter that password if asked. Otherwise, it should now mount on your desktop.
Let us know if this solves your issue.

Click “General” in the toolbar.
Ensure that all the items under "Show these items on the desktop" are checked.
Close the preference window.

Ensure that all the items under "Devices" & “Shared” are checked.
Close the preference window.

External USB-hdd not recognised by Finder if connected to Time Capsule

Hello!
I'd like to connect a small external harddrive (40 GB) to my Time Capsule (1 TB) via USB.
I've read on http://www.apple.com/timecapsule/wireless.html the followings:
"... +And if you want to share both a printer and an additional hard drive, you can. Just connect a USB hub to Time Capsule.+ ..."
While I've connected two printers to Time Capsule - so I already use a USB hub - I've tried with the external USB-harddrive, but it wasn't recognised neither by the Finder, nor by the DiskUtility-app. The external USB-harddrive appears not even if I connect it directly to the Time Capsule!
Restarting the Time Capsule / USB-hub / external USB-harddrive / my Mac doesn't change anything
The external USB-harddrive appears only in the AirPort-utility app (5.4.2) in "manual Config" - "Devices", but even here only as a possible archiving device for the internal Time Capsule harddrive.
The USB-harddrive itself is formated as Mac OS extended (journaled) and it works like it should on my iMac (3.06 GHz, Mac OS X 10.5.7).
Do you have any idea why the external USB-harddrive doesn't appear when connected to the Time Capsule?

*Accessing External Hard Disk*
Open a Finder window
Select the Time Capsule in the Sidebar on the left.

As for Disk Utility, bear in mind that DU won't "see" network attached storage devices unless they are already mounted on the Desktop. And even then they are sometimes not "seen" by DU. If you are going to do any work on a network attached storage device avoid attempting to do it wirelessly. Best to connect it directly to the Mac (USB/Firewire), or at the very least via ethernet.

Airport Time Capsule : extension to existing network

My new Airport Time Capsule just want to create its own network, but I want it to extend my existing network. When I pick "other options" and "add to an existing network" nothing happens??

Not if you want to connect the Time Capsule using wireless. It must connect using a permanent wired Ethernet connection.
The Time Capsule would only extend/work using wireless if you had another Apple router....Not a BT router.

Stream7 on Apple Time Capsule

By separating the 2.4GHz for the 5GHz network abilities of the my Apple Time Capsule (giving the 5GHz it's own unique SSID like "network-bert" for the 2.4GHz and "network-bert-5G" for the 5GHz network) I was able to connect my new Stream7 with my home WiFi network.
I just put this post here since I noticed more Stream7 users having the same issue while connecting to an Apple Airport Device. Hopefully it is of some help to you.

The instructions are not really Mac OS.. they are related to the using the airport utility.. the windows version of the utility is very similar in layout.. you just use the utility and follow the instructions.
If you have issues.. give us a few screen shots of where you get stuck.. overall the port forwarding is fairly simple.
If you have lots of Macs in the environment.. you can do the setup from one of those.. you do not need to setup port forwarding from the computer that will be the target for ports to be opened.. it makes no difference as long as you lock its IP address.

Time Capsule shuts down

My Time Capsule occasionally shuts down on its own. Everything is plugged in. When I unplug it from the back and plug it back in, it powers up again. It will work for days, even weeks and then power down again. I have tried plugging it into different power strips from other outlets and it sill happens. I brought it and the power cord to the the Genius Bar twice, 1 time for 2 weeks and they said they could not replicate the situation.

As with many HD today, the TCs HD does have a sleep feature. What exactly do you mean by "shuts down"?
Does it not wake on its' own when a TM machine backup takes place?
Do you lose internet connectivity?
Does your wireless network disappear on your Mac?
Another idea is this: When you look at the TCs power cord in the back of the device, does the white tip disappear completely into the back of the TC? If not then it is not pushed in all the way and power could be lost. I discovered this one last year.

PowerBook G4 not connecting to new Apple network setup up with Time Capsule

I have a MacMini and Macbook Pro which I have successfully setup to work on a home network with my new 500GB Timecapsule. Only the MacBook Pro wirelessly uses Time Machine with the Time Capsule and the MacMini has its own external back-up.
The Problem is I also have an older PowerBook G4 running 10.2.8 so that my daughter can also run older pre-OS X kids programs and my wife uses the wireless internet on it...until now.
Can you explain why my powerbook will not recognize or login to my new Time capsule network when it was working fine on my old linksys wireless-g? I only want internet access...no back-up.

You could have the time capsule set up for 802.11N. If your powerbook is 802.11b/g then it will not connect. You would have to make sure that the times capsule is set up for b/g as well.

Time Capsule - Sharing a USB hard disk over network

I've been trying to get a definite answer to this issue on this forum and others, but couldn't. Sorry if it was already answered and if my thorough search wasn't enough.
I have a Time Capsule and I wish to add an external hard drive to my setup. Since I want the HD to be shared on the network and be accessible through my wifi setup at home, I want to add it on the USB port on the Time Capsule and then make it a shared HD over the network.
Seems that if this is a stroll in the park with the Airport Extreme base, it's not that straightforward with Time Capsule.
All the articles I could find were about adding a HD backup to the TC, but it's not what I'm looking for. I really wish to simply add a HD through the USB port and allow the network users to access it (don't need it to be backed up on the TC !).
My network has an Airport Express as an extender and I have to point out that the TC is not really acting as a router as the place I live in has direct connection to a central router through a RJ45 wall plug.
Any ideas, walkthroughs ? (or any good ideas for a not expensive WLAN RAID solution ?)

Time Capsule and SLOW bandwidth with Verizon FIOS?????

Ok I have had verizon FIOS and my time capsule for almost 3 years. All running latest firmware updates (which might be the problem with the TC). For the last couple years it has been a blazing fast setup and I have a ps3, imac, macbook pro, apple tv, iphone, ipad, etc all hooked up to my network.
Then 5 days ago I buy a new Imac and the firmware update for the TC. Now the bandwidth in my house has dropped to crap. I have directly connected to the FIOS router with ethernet and its like 20 megs per second down and10 up, but when I connect my time capsule back up and go from there it is like 4 down and 3 up? It was NEVER like this before....any ideas or suggestions?

Things were fine before two changes occurred on your network. So, it might be logical to try to isolate one thing or the other to arrive at a possible cause for your network slowdown.
You need to completely power cycle the entire network after you make any change on a network, whether that be adding a new device (the iMac) or making another change (the firmware update).
Power everything off...modem, routers, computers, consoles, printers, etc., the order is not important. Wait 5 minutes. Then power up your modem first and let it run for 5 minutes by itself. Power up the next device connected to the modem (probably your Time Capsule) the same way. Power up the next device the same way, etc. until everything is powered back up.
What are your results?
If things are still slow, remove one of the things that you changed on your network...the iMac...by powering it off, restarting your network again (the extended power off above is not necessary) and then checking the network again.
Any change?
If no change on the iMac test, then the other variable on your network is the firmware update. It's unlikely...+but possible+...that the firmware update changed something in the interaction between your Time Capsule and FIOS router, so something is not functioning quite correctly. Things like this can happen with firmware updates because while Apple knows what works among their own products; they cannot know what works in every instance when another product interfaces with one of of theirs.
It should be possible to rollback the firmware on your Time Capsule to the previous version if you want to try that approach. There's no guarantee of course, that this will help either. Post back if you want to try this.

I just purchased two Macbook Air along with two Time Capsule (2TB) for my kids. Meanwhile I use a sagemcom ADLS modem/router for home use. Can I connect both Time Capsule and laptop which will allow both laptop to have their own backup system?

I assume that you are asking about using the Time Capsules for Time Machine backups here, correct?
If yes, both MBAs will be able to select the specific Time Capsule that they will use for backups, so "point" MBA1 to Time Capsule 1 and MBA2 to Time Capsule 2.
Since you will have plenty of available backup space if you use two Time Capsules, you might want to consider having each MBA back up to both Time Capsule 1 and Time Capsule 2.
This way, if one Time Capsule fails, you will still have a complete set of backups for both MBAs.

Problem with Time Capsule used with an External Hard Drive (with it's own power supply)

I have a mid 2012 Macbook Pro with Mavericks installed. I have the latest Time Capsule (802.11 ac) with an external hard drive hooked up via the USB port. The external hard drive was taken from an older Mac desktop machine and is formatted correctly (Mac OS Extended Journaled). The external hard drive has it's own power supply and shows up fine when connected directly to my laptop.
For whatever reason I CAN see the hard (LAN Storage) when in AirPort utility but I CANNOT find or access the drive from anywhere within the Finder.
My finder settings are set this way:

As you can see, the "Data" drive isn't displayed (it's not on the TIme Machine mounted drive either). The external drive "LAN Storage" isn't availailable anywhere either.
I've tried unplugging and restarting my Time Capsule and the External Drive with no luck.
Any advice?

Welcome to Mavericks.. and its new concept of network drives not just being hard to find like in Mountain Lion but totally invisible.
Apple changed over Mavericks to using SMB2 by default.. broken and flawed SMB2.
Change over to AFP by manually mounting the TC drives.
I strongly recommend the first thing you do is change the TC names to SMB standard.. that just helps.
Short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
So rather than the very Generic THE Airport Time Capsule.. you make it even more Generic with TC1 (each subsequent TC increment the number. )
LAN Storage is not a good name either for USB drive.. especially now that it is WAN Storage.. WStore for example.. but whatever makes sense to you.
The name itself doesn't matter. .following the rules, short no spaces and pure alphanumeric does. Everything, conforms.
Now in Finder.. Go, Connect to Server.
AFP://TC1 or AFP://10.0.1.1 (you can use either the name (now that it is proper network name) or the IP address .. replace with your actual name or IP).
The computer will find the resources and then ask you for a password.. this is required, even if default,, which is public.. so type in your password or public if you did not change it.
Store the password in your keychain.
The TC should now mount and all the resources on it be made available or visible.
