Time Capsule and adding new computer to it to back up with time machine
I started by backing up my MacBook Pro on the Time Capsule using time machine using an ethernet cable. Fine no problem. Just took a long time.
So, next I wanted to also back up my wife's new MacBook. Every time I try to do this I get this message
" Time Machine Error
The backup disk image could not be created"
When you look at the Time Machine screen there's 322.9 GB available and all it says is "Failed"
I need to back up her machine. Is there a way to do this that I'm missing?

This error message appears when there are problems with the network communication between the Time Capsule and the computer. There are several things that you can try to correct this problem.
Step 1. Check Local Machine Name. Click on System Preferences and then click on Sharing. Make sure your computer's name is present. You might try simplifying the name as well by removing spaces, apostrophes, etc. if they are present. Do not exceed 25 characters.
Step 2. Check the Time Capsule Name. Use AirPort Utility to make sure that the Time Capsule and local network names do not have spaces, apostrophes, etc. Do not exceed 25 characters.
Step 3. Show Connected Servers on Desktop. Check Preferences in the Finder menu and make sure there is a check next to the box that reads "Connected Servers" under the heading "Show these devices on the desktop"
Step 4. Power down your system for 5-10 minutes. Power up your modem first and let it run for a few minutes, then the Time Capsule, etc. and then your computers.

You can, but how are you going to back up those other files? When (not if) your Time Capsule fails, you risk losing them. See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details.

Not sure what you mean. You have to connect a computer, either via Ethernet cable or wirelessly, to read or write to the disk. -
I am frequently unable to join the internet or, if I can, it is exceptionally slow. The ISP says nothing is wrong ontheir end. Are there any compatibility issues with any ISPs when using Time Capsule and/or iMacs?
Tried this several times to no avail. I believe it is the ISP causing the problem...Time Warner.

MacBook Pro and Time Capsule after adding new wireless router
I have a MacBook Pro and Time Capsule (which functions wirelessly to router and computer). I added a new wireless router (netgear, not my idea) and had to change name of wireless network. Now Time Capsule flashes amber and does not show up in Airport Utility.
Do I have to set up Time Capsule from scratch? If so, if you can aim me to directions I won't have to waste tech support's time.
My additional question on a similar vein: I also have a Time Capsule (second time capsule) which is plugged into the wireless router using ethernet cable for use with a windows notebook running windows 7 which backs up wirelessly. Do I have to change anything on this Time Capsule (second Time Capsule) as a result of change in name of network (I've already adjusted computer to connect to network)?Hi DD,

I downloaded Lion on my 4 yr old iMac. The download stalled at the last minute so I clicked "CANCEL". When it was restarted, Lion was there, with no apparent option but to go ahead and install so I assumed it was okay. Didn't transfer data from "another computer" when prompted - assumed it would transfer from that computer. It apparently cleaned out the hard drive. It looks like a brand new computer. None of my apps, programs, files, or thousands of photos. It is backed up on Time machine, but it's a sickening sight. Any idea why this happened and suggestions before restoring? Thanks.
I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots. Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.

I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library. Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots. -
Time capsule and adding additional router in my house
My time capsule router unfortunatly does not supply my entire house with a good signal. If I place it by my main IMac my kids stuff on the other side of the house and basement gets a poor signal. If I move the router to the other side of the house then the kids stuff works and my computers do not. If I purchase an Airport express and run a hard line from my Time Capsule to it on the other side of the house will this pretty much take care of the issues and will I have any issues with the airport express and TC on the same network? I have tried other signal boosters but didnt really have any success with them. Any other suggestions?
Thank youYes, an Express and the TC with ethernet is fine.. But any wireless router should run in this configuration .. you are not setting it up as WAP only but as router .. use wan bypass.. sorry instructions are on another site but are pretty clear.

Time capsule as external hard drive doesn't get backed up by Time machine
hi my set up is as follows:
iMac 1 TB, with a time capsule 1 TB used as an external hard drive to store media and iTunes files. My problem is that I have a 3TB external hard drive which I used to back up my iMac. I had thought it would also back up the time capsule automatically (yes it is not in in the exclude section on time machine). Unfortunately, it does not appear to recognise that time capsule is merely a hard drive. Any fixes? Help gratefully received as I really need the media files backed up in case the time capsule hard drive fails (which I believe is quite common).I answerered on your other thread.. TM cannot back network drives.. never has been able to.. and probably never will be able to, as it depends on the HFS+ format structure.
Use a third party backup.. superduper.. CCC.. plenty of others available.. easy with media files as you are probably not changing them often.. a simply file copy via terminal can probably work fine much like we would script backup files with robocopy on windows. I am sure such products will exist.

Any suggestion if it is possible after all to recover my old back up from the time capsule? I guess it lost though.Mount and open the internal disk of the Time Capsule. How many "sparsebundle" files do you see? If you only have one Mac using Time Machine but you see two such files, then one of them has your old data. In this case you may have missed a chance to continue using the old Time Machine file.

New to time capsule and need help with installing it?
I just bought a new 3tb time capsule and also new to apple routers I want to use this as my new wireless router how do I go about switching this out with my router now. Im using a linskys router now nothing special I think its only a 300Mbps the only problem is that we just had our new house complete and prewired with ethernet connection in every room and a security system that runs off of the router how do I go about switching that set up to the new time capsule? I know if I had to have the company come out to do it they charge a hefty fee which I know its that hard to do the only thing that's stopping me is that set up to the security system I don't want to screw that up???
Three different aspects
1. Set the form up to submit the data (XML or FDF), not the full PDF. You can import the data to the PDF on your end.
2. You can turn on Extended Reader Rights, but then limit the use/users to 500 by the EULA. The applicability of this option depends on your intended application. In a small office, it would be fine. For general web use you would likely exceed the limit and be in violation of the EULA.
3. There may be an e-mail problem, one reason that e-mail is not recommended for form submission (even if the manual discusses it). Again, in a controlled environment like an office it will probably work fine, but in a web setup it is best to use a web script. There are 2 problems with e-mail that both depend on the client system (YOU have no control, but will be blamed in any case). First, the client machine has to be set up as an active MAPI client. Many folks do not have this on. Second, some e-mail clients treat PDFs like text and the result is a corrupt e-mail submission, even if it makes to you.
If you have the possibility of web submission, do it. I suggest only having the form data submitted and not the form. -
Can I use time capsule for tranfering entire computer.
I have a new macbook that Apple messed up on and I am having to send back. I will be getting the ne 17'macbook instead. I am hoping that if I use time capsule and time machine I will be able to put all applications and data from the macbook, send back the macbook to apple for my refund and then, when the 17' macbook pro comes in I can restore onto that computer and have all my applications put onto the new computer just as if I had the two computer and plugged them into each other to copy onto the new computer. Can I do this with Time Capsule? Will it make a clone of my hard drive so all application are transferred? Thanks for the helps

No, Time Machine will NOT clone your existing MacBook's hard drive regardless of the destination drive that you use. You will need another utility like SuperDuper to do this.

You can use the Time Capsule (TC) as the destination drive for cloning software. In this case, the TC will perform like any other network drive. -
Please Help - Time Capsule and External hard drive Issues
Recently, I switched from Comcast to AT&T uverse as my internet provider and I started experiencing problems.
(1) I have a 4th generation Apple Time Capsule which I am using as my router.
(2) Connected to the Apple Time Capsule - USB - is an external hard drive (not for backup with Time Machine.)
(3) I have a 2011 Macbook pro which I use to access my file on my time capsule and external hard drive.
(4) I had been using my AT&T portable Hotspot from my cell phone to get internet access on my MacBook pro from remote locations to gain access to my external hard drive which is attached to the time capsule.
(5) On August 2, 2014, I switched from Comcast to AT&T and had the AT&T turn off the router function. (I have been using the router from my apple time capsule)
(6) Under Network I switched to bridge mode.
(7) And since August 2, 2014 my time capsule has not been backup.
THE PROBLEM - I need to be able to use the hotspot function from my cell phone to gain access on the external hard drive using my MacBook Pro which I was able to do before. Now it is showing time capsule under finder but unable to connect.
Do I need to reset my Time Capsule since I have a new service provider. Everything else works fine - meaning able to get internet signal but unable to access my external hard drive and backup my time capsule. Please HELP.(5) On August 2, 2014, I switched from Comcast to AT&T and had the AT&T turn off the router function. (I have been using the router from my apple time capsule)

If you got ATT to turn off router function in their modem..
Then 6. is wrong.. You cannot have the Network switched to bridge mode..
You must have it set to dhcp and nat.
That is also why you cannot backup.. the TC is off the network.
Please change back to router mode in the TC.
Ensure the internet tab shows dhcp and you create a wireless network.
Then power down the TC... power down the ATT modem.. wait about 20min (you can try 5min.. but it might not be long enough).
Power up the ATT modem.. wait 2min for things to flash lights in de right blinkin order.. then start the TC.
Open the airport utility and make sure your TC captured the public IP and is now working as the router.
That should fix that end of it.. the hotspot end??

Can you use two Time Capsules and back up both with Time Machine.
My little iMac hard drive (250GB) is quickly filling up with my iTunes library (180GB). I have a 500GB Time Capsule which I use to back up my system via Time Capsule. I would like to move my iTunes library to an external hard drive. If I add the 1TB Time Capsule and use it as my main system back up and wireless router can I use my 500GB Time Capsule as an external drive to locate my iTunes library? Will I be able to back up both my iMac HD and the 500GB Time Capsule to the 1TB Time Capsule using Time Machine or some other method?
Finally if I can do this can I have both Time Capsules running wireless?

I know I will have to "point" or "map" the new location of my iTunes library to the external hard drive/2nd Time Capsule. Once that is done wouldn't Time Machine then just find the location and back it up along with all the data on the iMac hard drive?
Since this Time Capsule would be connected wirelessly or via Ethernet to your Mac, it would appear as a network drive. Time Machine will not back up data FROM a network drive. Therefore Time Machine will not back up data on this other Time Capsule. -

c. Apparently so based on these instructions I have found: (Haven't tried it myself)
In the Finder preferences check the box "show server" to mount to desktop.
Under Airport Utility:
Disks - check over wan and check file sharing and write down the ip address
Under the Finder, use the GO function to find your server ie the hard drive on the TC. In the window provided type afp://ip address then password if applicable. The hard drive should mount and be shown on the desktop. -
Here is what I have been doing:
I got my new macbook air 11" two weeks ago, and have been haven problems with wifi connection dropping, I'm using verizon fioz at home, and their router
I also have a time capsule not set up as a network just join it to my current one.
After looking online all these days, I though, maybe is the verizon device that is updated..
I then reset the time capsule, created a new network
connected my system to the time capsule network, and there it is
DONE, everything works now.
So if you are haven the same problem,, that is the fix

It is a pretty new computer, have you tried taking it in under Applecare (if you live somewhere this is convenient)? Maybe you just got a defective wifi card. I won't defend Apple over this wifi mess, because it really is terrible, but your issue seems not the same as the ones I've read about while researching how to fix mine (unsucessfully....).
