Time Capsule and an Internet connection

I was getting an error with TC with regards to backing it up.  I tried to reset the TC back to factory settings I bought this TC from Apple in 2009,  Once I did that, I now no-longer have access to the Internet with the TC. It has a sold yellow light and my computer dosn't recognize it.  can someone please help?????  I was able to hook up a non TC router and it worked fine with no trouble.  I am not sure if loading Maverick had any issues with this?

Hi, Under Water.
You should configure the Express to "Join a wireless network" or to "Extend a wireless network". (Either one will work.)
Connect your computer to your Express via Ethernet and open AirPort Utility. Press "Manual Setup" and authenticate if necessary.
Go to the "Base Station" tab. Give the Express a name and password.
Go to the "Wireless" tab. Set the Wireless mode to "Join a wireless network" or "Extend a wireless network." Enter the name of the wireless network created by your Time Capsule (or select it from the list). Check the box that says "Allow Ethernet clients" (if you're joining) or "Allow Wireless Clients" (if you're extending).
Provide the appropriate security mode and password for the Time Capsule's network.
Press "Update" and allow your Express to restart.
Then you can plug the solar system into the Express's Ethernet port.

Time Capsule drops wifi/internet connection and flashes amber.  I've tried unplugging it and my modem but it continues to do this every so often.  The time capsule is out in the open, so I don't think it's a heat issue.  It's running firmware 7.7.3.  Anyone else having this issue?  Any suggestions on how to fix it?  It's driving me crazy!

Bought the time capsule in Oct 2013.  I have a Sagemcom 2864 modem from Bell but used through Teksavvy.  The 5 ghz has been flaky until I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 I think.  I had a closer look at it and it appears that the wifi is ok.  I was thrown off by the wifi symbol being all animated in the menu bar.  I was able to ping the time capsule via wifi.  All the status lights on the modem looked ok.  Next time it happens, I'll see if I can get some more details.  Do you know if there's anyway to get some logs from the airport utility?

  • Time Capsule Degrades Wireless Internet Connection: Help?

Time Capsule Degrades Wireless Internet Connection: I am in FL using Brighthouse Cable as my internet provider (15MG down). The internet connection speed is slower than a dial up connection when wirelessly connected to my network to my Time Capsule. When I remove the Time Capsule and replace it with Brighthouses Netgear router the internet speed are normal (fast). Additionally, the internet speed is OK when I first hit a website, but the speed degrades rapidly as I access additional web pages. I no longer use my Time Capsule and therefore are not getting my back-up protection. (NOTE: I tried Verizon Fios and had the same problem.) Can anyone help?

  • MacBook Air + Time Capsule  frequently dropping internet connection

I too have been having frequently dropped wireless connections between my MacBook Air (MBA) and my Time Capsule(TC). My TC is connected to a cable modem and I also have an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) at a different part of my house which is used to extend my network connecting via ethernet to a PC running VISTA, and wirelessly to a printer and an older MacBook. I also connect wirelessly to my home network with two iPhones, a Squeezebox 3 with a server running on the PC. I have an Apple TV and a Squeezebox 2 connected to my TC via ethernet.
When my connection drops I will either see a Time Capsule disconnect message or if I am surfing the web, the browser just hangs. The wireless ICON strength is still pegged a the max level. None of my other devices (wireless or ethernet) connected to the TC or the other AEBS seem to drop their internet connections. I can re-establish the connection on my MBA by either turning off my MBA's Airport wireless and then turning it back on or by running the network diagnostics. The latter method usually shows green lights for all but the "Internet" and the "Server" which will have yellow lights. Usually when I select my wireless network and press continue, it will prompt for my WPA2 password which I have to reenter even though I always check the box for it to remember the password in the keychain.
After reading the various discussions on disconnect problems and trying the various "solutions" I was still having the disconnect problem.
Last night, I decided to turn off my Time Capsule and was then able to maintain an internet connection for considerably longer than before. Perhaps it was one of the other "solutions" that caused that. After turning my TC back on, the disconnect problem reoccurred within about 5 minutes.
Next, I did my too frequent Time Capsule remedy which was to disconnect the power and then reconnect the power. (Seems like some of these devices (APPLE TV included) could use power switches.) I then deleted the .sparsebundle backup file on the Time Capsule. I was then able to restart Time Capsule backup and things have been running uninterrupted for over 12 hours...still backing up (20GB in 12 hours? Doesn't seem very fast!). I can report back later if this actually "fixes" my disconnect problems in the future. I am dubious that it will.
I have several questions about the MBA and the TC/Time Machine backup operation.
1.) I often forget about the TC when I close the lid on my MBA and haul it off to work. At work (connecting via ethernet), I will eventually get a TC disconnect error. But I am wondering if there are points in the backup process where a random disconnect will cause some sort of TC corruption. What is the recommended way of handling this? Should I always stop the Time Machine backup before turning off my MBA? (A nuisance if so!)
2.) What is happening when the TC backup operation stops functioning and hangs up the MBA's internet connection? (I see lots of messages logged in the system log when this happens; but, of course, I don't have much of a clue of which ones are normal and which are not normal. I could send a copy of the logs when it happens next (I am assuming it will).
Also one other anecdote. A few months back, I had taken another AEBS to my work to use during a training conference. My MBA kept dropping its connection while the other PC laptops in the room maintained their connections...(very embarrassing!). Maybe one of the other "solutions" would have fixed the problem or maybe if I had just turned off my Time Machine backup it would not have disconnected. I will repeat that exercise when I get a chance now that I have some things to try.
It seems pretty clear to me from my own experiences and the discussion reports of others that the disconnect problem lies in the MBA's wireless internet connection software or the configuration of it. It seems like it is having difficulty recovering from various wireless connection "mishaps".

Folks, I was having a very similar problem for the last 6 months. My connection was fine until June 2008, after which my Macbook and my Time Capsule would constantly conflict. If I rebooted or reset the TC, or the MB, things would be fine for a few minutes or sometimes a few hours and the problem would recur soon thereafter. About a month ago, I had to do a clean reinstall and the problem vanished for about 5 days, after which it reappeared. My MB never had a problem at work, or at someone else's home or with other routers, only with TC. Apple sent me a new TC, then they replaced my Airport card but the situation did not change ... UNTIL ABOUT AN HOUR AGO.
An hour ago, I called Apple for the nth time in the last 6 months, and the rep heard me out (just like the previous n-1 reps). He then asked me to to System Preferences --> Accounts --> Login Items and asked if Real Player Downloader showed up in my list. Indeed it did. He asked me to remove it, and told me that Apple had just figured out that the Real Player downloader was recently found to be causing a drop in the connection between Macbooks and the TC (as well Airport Express).
The problem I've been having baffled everyone. All the previous reps, the guys at the Genius Bars, nobody had a clue. Joe (the rep I spoke with this morning) seemed very confident that the removal of the Real Player Downloader from the list of login items would resolve the problem. So far, so good. My connection seems solid (its only been an hour, but earlier it would drop after 5 minutes of use).
I hope my problem that (literally!) used up hundreds of hours of my time has been finally resolved. I hope this solution will work for at least some of you as well. What gives me hope is that this solution is logically consistent with the history of my problems. I probably first downloaded Real Player in June 2008. And when I did a clean install, I remember downloading Real Player a few days after the reinstall. So I'm pretty hopeful that my issue has been finally resolved.
Shame on Real Player for putting out a defective piece of software. And thank you Joe!

  • Using time capsule to share internet connection with a pc via ethernet

    Hi,
I've recently acquired a time capsule and was wondering if i could use it to share a wireless internet connection via ethernet to my non-wireless (windows 7) pc?
My current situation is that i have a wireless modem/router that shares my internet connection wirelessly with my mac mini.
I have a pc without a wireless card that i want to connect to the wireless network so i was wondering if it was possible to attach the pc and the time capsule with an ethernet cable, then connect the time capsule to the wireless network and share the internet connection with the pc.
Can anyone tell me if this is possible, and if so how?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the discussion area!
IF...your wireless network is now being created by another Apple "n" router like an AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express or Time Capsule, it would be possible to do what you want to do.
But the Time Capsule would not be compatible for what you want if your wireless is created by another manufacturer's router. The Time Capsule could "join" this wireless network so that backups would occur over wireless. However, when the Time Capsule is configured this way, the ethernet ports on the device are not active, so this would not help with the ethernet connection that your computer needs.
A new AirPort Express 802.11n would do what you want. It has the capability of joining virtually any wireless network and the ethernet port can be enabled using the ProxySTA feature, so it would work for your purpose.

  • How do I set up the Time Capsule without an internet connection

How do I set up the Time Capsule as a wireless hard drive without an internet connection.   I am in a office situation in which I cannot access my work network.  I need to be able to share files on the Time Capsule over the wire connection.

Are you using a v6 uitlity.. because it is a toy.. ??
Get v5 utility and then you can hold down the option key and select the right mode.
If you have lion, just install it.. For ML follow this.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Accessing Time Capsule From Any Internet Connection

Could you please tell me if it will be possible to access Time Capsule from any internet. I would like to put all my files on the device and be able to access these while out on the road.
Thanks in advance for your help
    Cheers Steve

Yes, you certainly can (right now) remotely access the hard drive attached to your AEBSn. I will refer you to "Step 4" in Apple's article Sharing a USB hard disk on your network for instructions on enabling this feature. To access the disk remotely (and don't test this from a computer on your own LAN) select "Connect to Server" from the Finder's "Go" menu, and enter the public IP address of your Base Station.
I have to admit the specs for Time Capsule don't explicitly indicate that Time Capsule will support this feature. However, given this feature is available on the AEBSn and is easy to implement, I would be very surprised if Apple took away this feature when they designed Time Capsule.

  • Time capsule keeps losing internet connection

I seem to keep losing the internet connection, and this seems to be when Time Capsule is doing backups. It is fine most of the time, it seems to have an IP address, but I can't connect to the internet. This seems to happen when it is doing backups. Have I got the time capsule set up correctly? I am using it with BT Home Hub which is also a wireless router, and I have set up Time Capsule to join the same wireless network. Most of the time it works fine. It also works fine when connected via ethernet, so I don't think there is anything wrong with the Time Capsule, maybe just the way it's set up. Or does it always behave like that? Can anyone offer any suggestions?

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.3, I don't have 10.6.4 yet though am just about to install it, so it can't just be related to 10.6.4.
This morning when I booted up, I had lost my desktop background picture, the clock was wrong and my keychains seemed to be messed up. Nothing else seemed to be wrong, but I restored a backup anyway, and repaired the keychains. I don't know whether this had anything to do with Time Capsule or not, but I have my suspicions. At the moment I have connected the Mac to the Time Capsule by ethernet, and that seems to be OK, but I'd like to be able to put the Time Capsule in another room, to extend the range of the wireless network. I did wonder if there could be interference between Time Capsule and the Home Hub, as they are quite close to each other.
I do not seem to have any problems when using my Macbook Pro.

  • Airport Time Capsule and Airport Extreme connection

I have replaced an Airport Extreme in my study upstairs by a brand new Airport Time Capsule 2T. It is the Airport Time Capsule that is connected to the Internet. The Airport Extreme has been moved downstairs and connected to the Airport Time Capsule by an Ethernet cable (run in a ventilation channel).
First, I configured the new Airport Time Capsule alone (without the Extreme). Then, I connected the Extreme and, unfortunately, configured it as a new network. Now, I would like to undo the last step and have, as they should be. both the Time Capsule and the Extreme in the same network.
The Airport Utility does not like it. Obviously, I am not doing things correctly.
    1. Should I reset both the Time Capsule and the Extreme, in what order and how ?
    2. How to delete unwanted networks from the list ?
    Regards - Kris

You do not have to change the TC.. leave it as the standard setup.. as long as it is right.
Reset the AE to factory and try again.. or just manually edit it.
Click on the AE in the airport utility then click on edit.
Go to the network tab and make sure it is set to bridge.
Go to the wireless tab.. and setup .. create a wireless network.. NOT EXTEND.
Use identical Wireless Name to the TC.
Use identical Security setting (WPA2 Personal is only valid one really).. and same password as the TC.
Then update your AE.. it is now part of the same network with the same wireless name..

  • Time Capsule crashing daily: internet connection loss

I recently bought a 1 TB Time Capsule and started using it as the primary router in the house. My wife and I have laptops (2006 MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo, MacBook Pro Unibody, Windows laptop) that use the connection.
What would happen is that my laptop (2006 MacBook Pro) and my Windows laptop would lose connection to the internet, but my wife's (Unibody MacBook Pro) would stay connected for awhile before losing the connection.
The Time Capsule, when it would get into this state, would show a green light. I can connect to the Time Capsule's wireless network ok, but I wouldn't be able to connect to the internet. When I try using the AirPort Utility, it can detect the Time Capsule, but it wouldn't be able to fetch the settings (the progress circle would spin endlessly).
If I unplug and plug the power cord back in, it works again, but I've had to do this once/twice a day. I shouldn't have to do this, though - does anyone have this problem? Any solutions?
I'm on the latest firmware (7.4.1).

Same problem here. Had to restart (tearing out the powercord...) the time capsule and my Airport Express everyday.
Just went back to 7.3.2. Apple has released major ******** with 7.4.1...

  • ***Time Capsule intermittently losing internet connection***

    Hello, Here's the story:
My Time Capsule intermittently is losing internet connection. The light is green for 5-10 minutes at a time, then turns amber for 2 minutes and loses internet connection.
At first,..I thought it was the TC going bad. Went to my local Apple store and had it replaced under warranty.
Still,, the same situation was happening.
Then talked to AT&T (DSL) and they checked the connection. They deemed it was OK and possibly the modem going bad.
Went to Best Buy and purchased a new modem. Installed, put into Bridge Mode,...interenet working OK.
Still,...the same situation that it stays on for 5-10 minutes, then loses it for 2 minutes.
Any ideas? Could it still be the ISP (AT&T)?
Last thought,...my neighbor uses Uverse (AT&T) for his cable/ISP and he is expierincing cable/ISP outages ramdomly. I am using DSL (AT&T) too but through my phone line. Are the two possibly related?

You need to run the modem in router mode..
I would either bridge the TC or remove it completely because you need to get exact log info from the modem.
Do isolation test.. ie remove all phones and filters and other devices from your phone line. Reboot the modem.. and wait for restart to complete.
Copy out of the modem the full line stats, sync info and even better if you can get cli access and do some deeper level stuff.. (most of the tools I use are PC only.. ie dmt tools).
Then make sure the log is turned on and giving max info and watch your connection.. if it drops without anything happening on the modem,, then the ISP is having issues.. which is possible although connection of cable and adsl is loose or non-existent.
If it drops sync keep track of how often and the line stats, Particularly the SNR..
See if you have an rf noise source in the house.. more if you are interested.

  • I recently bought a new iMac as well as a wireless time capsule and have it connected how can I use this external drive as the location to store all my files for iTunes, or is this even possible?

New iMac user here, I recently bought a new iMac and Time capsule and have the whole network up and running now. I have connected another external HD to the time capsule as well and have a total of 3 TB of storage connected wireless to my new iMac. My question is can I use this location as the default location for iTunes?  I doubt I am gonna run out of room considering the iMac has 1 TB of storage already, but I'd prefer to keep my movies and music off the Mac to keep it running smoothly. If this is possibly, I'd like to do this with iPhoto as well.

I would advise against placing your iTunes library on a Time Capsule.
The Time Capsule is designed as a backup device and not for wireless streaming of video.
Before you do anything more, can I suggest you put into place a reliable, redundant backup strategy.
Unless you are prepared to risk loss of your iTunes library due to a hard drive failure, I would not put iTunes on the Time Capsule.
Leave your iTunes library on your iMac until such time as your internal drive is full. Backup to Time Capsule using Time Machine and create a clone of your internal iMac HD to your external drive.
That's my 2 cents worth. Others may have a different opinion.

  • Can I create a network where the Time Capsule gets its internet connection from my iMac?

    Hi,
I've recently bought a Time Capsulebut I'm having some problems with it on my university network. It is an Eduroam network, so each computer has to authenticate before it can get an Internet connection – I can't use the Time Capsule normally as it is unable to authenticate to the network. However, I'd like to be able to create a smaller network in my room (with my computer and iDevices on so that I can use Remote and stuff, as well as to potentially get my Xbox and Kindle, which can't connect either, online).
Last time I did this, I had my iMac create an internet connection which it shared with everything else. (This was before I had the Time Capsule.) One way of solving it seems like it might be to share the Wifi internet connection with the Time Capsule through the ethernet, and then the Time Capsule can share the interent to everything else. Would this be possible? Or can you think of any other way that this could be done?
In other terms, I have an iMac, a Time Capsule, an iPhone and iPad, a Kindle and an Xbox. Only the iMac can connect to the internet and I'd like them all to be able to, as well as being on the same network. Is this possible?
    Thanks!

DropBox is another possibility for sharing files and it is free for the first 2GB of storage.

  • Apple Time Capsule and Comcast Internet.. a Relationship from HE77

    Hello,
I cannot believe I have waited this long to ask for help from you guys, but here I am pleading for advice..
I have Comcast Internet, and Direct TV television service.  I've been experiencing major issues with both but I think that I've realized the issue.  My wifi signal with Comcast All in One or the seperate modem.router they tried SUCKED!!! But I'm pretty sure that the issue is the fact that I have 2 digital baby monitors that run on a 2.4ghz frequency, which is exactly the frequency that Comcast wifi runs on.
The reason why I brought up the Direct TV thing is bc I've had them at my house several times because my Whole Home Media Center simply would not stay online, and when it did, its speeds were so slow downloading on demand content.  But, everything in my house is slow, not just Direct Tv.  This week the Direct Tv people hardwired their equipment directly to the Arris All in One Comcast router so that shoule alleviate that issue.
My thoughts are this. I know that my Apple Time Capsule can put off 2.4 as well as 5ghz frequency.  So my questions are:
Can i have both the all in one AND the time capsule putting off their own wifi signals.. The all in one using their standard 2.4ghz for some things, and the Time Capsule putting of the 5.0ghz for others.. If so, how do I do this and not have any issues such as double NAT, and things like that?
Should I just put the All in One in Bridge mode, and simply use the 2.4ghz and 5.0ghz from the Time Capsule to address this issue?  How do i do that? Also, would having the direct tv equipment plugged into one of the 4 ehternet ports on the All in One still allow it to pull internet from it, or should I just plug that into the time capsule as well?
Are there devices that for whatever reason will NOT be able to log onto the 5ghz frequency?
I keep hearing about bandwith this, and bandwith that.. I know I have a lot of devices pulling internet at once including, 5 direct tv recievers that somehow always need to be online, 3 iphones, 2 ipads, imac, apple tv, smart tv, laptop, xbox 360 (which really isnt ever even plugged in)  Is there any reason to be fearful that the bandwith the Time Capsule puts out may not be able to handle this load any better or worse than the all in one?
I will but lunch and/or dinner for anyone that can help me get this working, i swear!!

But I'm pretty sure that the issue is the fact that I have 2 digital baby monitors that run on a 2.4ghz frequency, which is exactly the frequency that Comcast wifi runs on.
That will sure as anything mess up your wifi.
This week the Direct Tv people hardwired their equipment directly to the Arris All in One Comcast router so that shoule alleviate that issue.
Ah.. hard wired.. that is the solution. Do not use wireless for media streaming.. it is destined to fail.
Can i have both the all in one AND the time capsule putting off their own wifi signals.. The all in one using their standard 2.4ghz for some things, and the Time Capsule putting of the 5.0ghz for others.. If so, how do I do this and not have any issues such as double NAT, and things like that?
You cannot turn off 2.4ghz in the TC.. but that is unlikely to be an issue.
    Bridge the TC.
Setup wireless to create a wireless network.. Use the same SSID as the Comcast all in one. Same security.. but use a different channel.. how you will do that with baby monitors x 2 I am not sure.. you may have to accept some overlap. There are only three non-overlapping channels, 1, 6, 11 .. pick the least signal one where you setup the TC.
Should I just put the All in One in Bridge mode
No you cannot do that. You can turn the wireless off though.
Also, would having the direct tv equipment plugged into one of the 4 ehternet ports on the All in One still allow it to pull internet from it, or should I just plug that into the time capsule as well?
That is why the unit cannot be bridged.. you will mess up the TV.
Are there devices that for whatever reason will NOT be able to log onto the 5ghz frequency?
Most old stuff.. only the most recent iphone and ipad are 5ghz. Most stuff requires 2.4ghz.
And there is an issue.. range of the 5ghz is poor.. you need high power wireless devices.. and none of the apple routers rate above mediocre. Even high power ones suffer dropoffs.
To be honest it is not going to fix the basic problem.. you probably do not have enough internet bandwidth share.. but the more devices connected the lower time slice each one gets .. that isn't the main trouble though.. it is the efficiency also drops off. Apple routers have no QoS.. this is important.. some things need real time connections.. streaming media, voip, etc.
Other stuff doesn't .. uploading or downloading email or updates. It is important that a choked system has a way of getting the best out of limited resources.. and that is QoS Quality of Service.
Look at a better router.. I recommend Asus RT-N66U as having far superior range and handling QoS.
You should also do a proper site survey to see how much wireless signal you really have.. but again you run into trouble.. the baby monitors are not going to show up unless they are wifi based, which is unlikely.
Sorry but until you can finish with the baby stuff you are going to have to live with non-ideal world.

  • Time capsule with no internet connection

I have an internet connection through a wireless router that is set up off site. I need to use the time capsule to back up but I have no way of physically connecting the capsule to the internet. Is it possible to back up wirelessly?

    Clint,
I have the older airport extreme model and I've attached a usb hard drive to serve as our backup drive
Is this the "round" AirPort Extreme? If yes, the USB port only supports printing from compatible printers.
Even if you have the newer version of the "square" AirPort Extreme, Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port on the device, so I can't recommend that you even consider this.
If you want to use Time Machine to backup, you'll need to attach the drive directly to the computer, or consider a Time Capsule.
