Time Capsule and Ethernet port

hey guys,
I recently bought a time capsule, and stupidly enough, forgot that Time Capsule only has ethernet jacks- the problem is that my home only has a telephone modem jack. I was wondering if there were any Telephone to Ethernet jack converters?
thanks in advance guys, plse help!

OK, then you need a DSL modem which will have a phone connection coming in, and an ethernet (or if you're unlucky, USB) connection coming out. Unfortunately, as you've found, the Time Capsule doesn't have a built-in DSL modem. Did your DSL provider not supply you with one - they normally do?

  • Time Capsule and Ethernet Connection

Switch Time Capsule To Wired Connection
I have a Time Capsule (sometime in 2010) that I use to have wirelessly connected to my iMac (May 11). Recently I connected the iMac via its ethernet port to one of the ethernet ports on the TC. The TC is my LAN wired and wireless router and works great for the Internet. Yes,  DHCP is enabled. I have turned on my wifi for the iMAC since I want it only via ethernet.
However, now I do not see the Time Capsule on my desktop anymore.
SInce I previously have configured the Time Capsule to "join a wireless network", do I have to reset everything to get TM to work with TC via wired? Is there a way to do it without resetting TC?
    Any help would be great,
    Thanks
    Brian

If you use wireless to get in, then simply turn off the join a wireless network and go back to the original setup.. but resetting to factory is no big deal .. it will not do anything to your backups.. you will just need to redirect the imac where the backup drive is.

  • Time Capsule and Ethernet cable connection

    A simple question (I hope).
I currently have a 1TB Time Capsule working as my network wireless router and my Time Machine backup device. The TC is connected wirelessly to my iMac.
I would now like to connect the iMac to TC with an Ethernet cable in order to sped up my regular backups. (Heck, maybe it will give me a boost in Internet connection rates, too?)
My question is this - will simply plugging an Ethernet cable into my iMac and my TC work, meaning, will I have to drill down and change settings? Or will plugging in an Ethernet cable mess up a system that has for months worked flawlessly?
    Thanks for the help!

So you are saying I should push Ethernet to the top?
Yes. That's how I have it. If Ethernet is first, it's my understanding that OS X will try to connect with it first. If an Ethernet connection isn't available, OS X will work its way down the list until it finds a connection. I know it doesn't stop at that point, as I routinely have simultaneous connections with Ethernet and AirPort. The AirPort signal where my MacBook normally is is weak, so I depend on the Ethernet connection. I'm guessing that the order of connection items may play some part in prioritizing the use of network connections.
I definitely DO want to keep my Airport connection (i.e., wireless network), as I do indeed need wireless internet in my home for my iPhone, iPad, and my AirTunes streaming (which is sent to my Airport Express).
What I've recommended won't affect any of that.

  • Time capsule and air port utility

so i have set up my time capsule. successfully. my macair recognizes it. however, when i go to time machine and turn it on, the drop window comes down and my t.c. is not there. it needs to be in the drop box for me to select it to use as backup, correct? when on the phone with tech support, it asked me to check what version of airport utility. i have 5.2.2 according to them, time capsule can only work with 5.3. i have checked for updates and there are none at this time.
this is my first mac. any help would be appreciated

Yeah, you're hosed. I have the same problem. Apple is being inconsistent in their recent product releases - they pitch a CD-less laptop and in the next breath sell you a wireless backup box that requires your laptop to install software that they ONLY distribute on CDs. You will need to buy or borrow an external USB CD drive.

  • Connect non-Airport PowerPC G5 to Time Capsule using Ethernet port

hi, i have set up my MacBook Air wirelessly to our new TC.  no problemo with back-ups, extra storage of media file or www access.  i also connected up a laser printer to the TC USB port.  also no problemo getting at it.
i now want to connect my G5 (no wireless) to the TC with an Ethernet cable.  the TC is connected to my router using the WAN port.
B-T-W, for now, in order to maintain www access for the G5, i have connected the G5 to the router directly - not through the TC.
in the end, i'd like my G5 all LANed up via my TC so my other networked computers can see it and vica-versa
any suggestion on what seems fairly simple ?
the router is a 2Wire supplied by my ISP
    regards, SW

If the TC is in bridge which it should be.. then the G5 plugged into the 2wire can still access the TC. If you cannot access the TC then it is in router mode and you will have double NAT issues.. which the TC will show as an error.

  • Time Capsule and EyeTV - pauses in playback

I have EyeTV 3 on my G4 iMac set to use a folder on my Time Capsule for its archive. It records fine, and I can edit recordings down and burn them to DVD without problems. However, when I try to play recordings back from the archive on the Time Capsule I experience intermittent pauses about one second long. They don't occur at regular intervals but average out at about ten or twelve an hour.
Can anyone shed any light on this? Is there any configuration setting I can adjust that will cure it?
The iMac is connected directly to one of the Time Capsule's Ethernet ports, by the way.

I have more ethernet devices than my apple time capsule has ethernet output ports. What do I do?

Just to add to Bob's comment.. it is much better to move all the connections to the switch..
Don't leave two connections on the TC and then connection to the switch plus the rest.. plug everything into the switch. The only line running to the TC is to connect switch to TC.
The sweet spot for most people is 8 port switches which are now consumer items.. go into any big computer shop.. buy whatever brand you want.. they are not alot different.. but I have noticed smart switches are coming down in price.. to the point cheap end 8 port smart (managed sort of). are the price of dumb switches a year ago.. they also will have better controls and more details. ie discover what is using bandwidth in the network.. some basic QoS .. lots of stuff that Apple routers missed out on.
    eg d-link DGS-1100-08
I just bought one to replace my power hungry managed 16 port switch.. although I haven't unboxed it .. sometimes things don't work 100% on Macs but most have simple browser type access. Not all browsers work is my experience but something always does.

  • Time Capsule and only 120 kB/sec over ethernet?

    Hi Community,
I want to connect a Mac Mini (late 2009) and a Time Capsule (4th gen) over ethernet.
Even if I connect them directly (with a cat 6 cable, 6ft = 2m in length) I have a maximum transfer speed of around 120 kBit/sec ~ this is roughly 1/100 th of which is possible over gigabit ethernet (if hdds would be really fast ;-) .
The time capsule worked for about a year wirelessly and served my MacMini and my MacBook Air... but I have the cables and liked to gain some speed (and not have so much usage on my wifi).
I made a factory reset and put the Time Capsule in a No-Wifi-No-Internet mode with "hard wired" IP -- so it should work like a simple wired NAS.
Working with a switch (Netgear GS) I get the LED info, that the switch senses a gigabit-connection for the Mac Mini and the Time Capsule.
BTW: My internet download speed ist roughly at 600 kBit/sec -- so the Mini could handle more, which means: the Problem lies within the Time Capsule.
Can anyone help me? Is my TimeCapsule defective?

WLAN is deactivated in the Time Capsule and the Mac Mini. My "test-object" is my saved Mountain-Lion-Image with 4,4 GB in size -- forget to mention: The Mini runs on Mountain Lion.
I never tried the ethernet LAN connection before... so I don't know, if it would have worked with Snow-Leo or Lion. But as said before... downloading from the internet I can get 600 kB/s which is limited by my 6MBit DSL line.
Unfortunately I don't have another gBit ethernet Mac to test the Time Capsule. The Air doesn't have a LAN plug-socket.
I tried the three LAN ports and the WAN port of the Time Capsule -- all connect the Mini to the TC, but all give me the same transfer speed... of 120 kB/sec.
Of course, the WLAN connection to the TC is much faster. Before the wires I used the 5 GHz band -- and could make a full system Backup over a night. Cabled I would have to spend around 80 days for that ;-)
BTW: A PING-Test looks quite good...

I have a time capsule and two air port expresses. The time capsule is in the middle of my house, the expresses equidistant in opposite directions. I would like the expresses to both connect directly to the capsule, but they are connected in serial. How to reconfigure.
I ask because I have music running out of both expresses, and the one that is most distant from the time capsule (routed through the first express) regularly drops the music signal from itunes. And I am guessing the serial configuration of the routers has something to do with this, but my root problem is music dropout - any thoughts would be appreciated.

If you have the the most current model of the Express devices, the default setup is to "extend" the wireless signal.  In this type of setup, each Express communicates directly to the Time Capsule.
How did you setup the AirPort Express devices?
What version of the Mac operating system are you using on your MacBook?   Or, do you have AirPort Utility installed on your iPad?

  • I have a 2T apple time capsule and router. I bought a Hauppauge WinTV extender which allows regular TV to be broadcasted on a PC. The program allows streaming to a Mac or iPad, iPhone, etc. I need to open a port on the router to allow this to work.

I have a 2T apple time capsule and router. I bought a Hauppauge Win TV extender which allows TV to be broadcasted on a PC. The program allows for the TV to be streamed on a Mac, Iphone, Ipad. I need to access the router set up options to open a port on the router to allow this program to stream the TV to the Mac and Iphone. I do not know how to access the apple time capsule router to change the settings to open a port on the router. help please.

Firstly you do not need to open ports to stream locally.. there is no port block in local LAN.. only WAN to LAN. So there is a good chance it is not needed at all..
Opening ports on the TC I strongly recommend a v5 airport utility.. you can download one for windows if you don't have a Mac.. iOS version of the utility I am not sure but it will not work to do complex things.
In the v5 utility go to the NAT area, and click on port mappings.
Sorry I don't have a screen shot at the moment of the actual mapping page.. but simply put the IP of the device you want opened and the port.
There are plenty of posts with this info if you google.
But as noted.. this is purely WAN to LAN.. nothing else.

  • Time Capsule and Time Machine through Ethernete

Hello I hope that someone can help me in this problem that I'm having with the configuration of my Time Capsule.
    Topology:
    TC --- (WAN) --- Router --- AP --- MBP
    |
    +--- (DSL) --- INTERNET
    where;
    TC - Time Capsule
WAN - WAN interface on the Time Capsule
    AP - Access Point
    MBP - Macbook Pro
    The ip addresses are:
    TC - 192.168.2.2
Router connected to the TC - 192.168.2.1
Router connected to the AP - 192.168.1.1
    MBP - 192.168.1.23
    DSL - public ip address
This is how I connected the TC and this is how is connected my network in my home/office...
I configured the Time Capsule to be my backup device through the internet (mobile me) and with my local wireless network.
    The problem:
I don't know why I can't get connected to the TC using the Time Machine application, I can reach it through ping or through the configuration assistance of the AirPort Utility...
If I want to configure it this is what I do:
    * Open AirPort Utility
    * Go to File - Configure Other and then type the ip address 192.168.2.2 and the password that I configured.
With these steps I'm able to get the information of the TC.
BTW the TC is in green and the AirPort in the TC is off...
The problem is that every time that I open the Time Machine app it asks me about "Select Backup Disk" so I click over there, then I click over "Set Up Time Capsule" and opens AirPort utility so if I try to get the TC I can't reach it, it stuck in RESCAN!!!
I have no idea what to do or how to set up or connect the devices.
Thanks a lot and I hope that someone can help me!!!

    Tesserax,
No problem with the questions... I'm more than glad that you help me with this problem...
Regarding what you asked let me answer:
o With the TC connected directly to the Cisco router by Ethernet, do you have the TC reconfigured as a bridge? (ref: AirPort Utility > Select the TC > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode))
    - Yes... It's already configured as Bridge mode in the internet connection...
o Do you have the TC configured with a static Private IP address provided by the Cisco's DHCP Server service? ... and is that static IP address the 192.168.2.2 you mentioned?
    - Yes. I already configured the static IP address as 192.168.2.2
If you have more questions please let me know, I want you to have my complete picture of the diagram
Let me share you this next link: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5594932/TimeCapsuleProblem.doc
Also let me share you this diagram: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5594932/Diagrama%20LAN%20INTERNET.pdf
Is a dropbox document that I uploaded so you can see the screenshots in the Time Capsule. Hope this can help better!!!
    Thanks again!!!

  • How can I use my time capsule with Ethernet cable? How is it also possible to use time capsule as a normal external hard drive?

My problem is that I don't know how to use my Time Capsule with Ethernet Cable, as when I use wireless it is really slow.

Make sure that there is an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on your modem/wireless router to the WAN port on the Time Capsule
Click on the Wireless tab at the top of the page
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to Off (I assume that you do not want the Time Capsule to provide a wireless network since you already have a wireless network)
Next, click the Internet icon at the top of the screen, then click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click the Update button at the bottom and wait 30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart and display a green light
Then, you must power off your entire network...all devices....in any order that you want
    Wait a minute
Start your modem/router first and let it run a minute
Start the Time Capsule and let it run a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time until everything is powered up
If you are using Time Machine for backups, you will need to reset the connection because you have changed the way in which the Time Capsule connects to your network
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Open Time Machine
    Click Select Disk
Click the Time Capsule to highlight it
Click Use for Backup or, it might be Use Disk
Now you can connect your Mac using an Ethernet cable to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to back up using Ethernet. Be sure to turn off the wireless on your Mac before you start the backup.
If you want to backup using wireless, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the Time Capsule and turn on the wireless and connect to your wireless network. Your computer will now backup using wireless.

  • How do I move my Time Capsule from Ethernet back to Wireless?

Problem: i need to back to wireless use of TC from temporary use of TC via Ethernet.
    Background:
I have had my Time Capsule set up for years as my Airport / wireless hub and backup. No problem.
Until I went to restore iPhone from Time Machine and, separate problem, need to connect my MacBook Pro to my Time Machine by Ethernet cable in order to get a direct connection (iPhoto was not restoring from Time Machine wireless, kept hitting I/O errors. Worked fine when I did it with direct Ethernet connection, another story).
NOW, I can not see to figure out how to revert back to regular, wireless, Airport hub connection (vs. Eternet direct)
    Other information:
    1. When I open Airport Utility it does not "see" my Time Capsule at all.
    2. Also, it does not let me "see" manual setup, or anything else, except for "rescan" which turns up without any results.
    3. The amber light keeps flashing.
    4. Previously I turned TC off, then on by unplugging and plugging. Flashing amber light. Same problem.
    5. All cables are plugged in tight, from ISP/FIOS cable, to TC via Ethernet, and, hopefully temporarily!, from TC to my MacBook Pro via Ethernet cable (which is what I want to undo, and go back to wireless)
    6. I am able to access Internet staying with cable running in configuration in previous point.
    Thanks in adv

You could have the TC join your existing wireless network as a client, or you can can connect the Time Capsule's WAN port to the modem/router.
In both cases the TC's "connection sharing" should be set to "Off (Bridge Mode)".
If the TC "joins" the wireless network you can only back up over your wireless connection, so the second option is preferable.

  • Setting up Air play with new time capsule and newer airport express?

I just recently purchased a new time capsule, and I'd like to use my current generation airport express to stream music from my apple devices. I just was wondering what I had to do in airport utility to set this up?  I was also wondering how to transition the network over from the old express to the new time capsule as far  software settings go. I really appreciate the help and assistance. Thanks folks. I'm really looking forward to setting up the network for our new iMac.

    Your setup is very easy..
This is how I would do it.
Remove the express from the network.. ie just unplug it but do not change anything in it. Keep the configuration as is until the TC is working.
Power off the cable modem.. this is requirement.. at least 20min is usually needed, dependining on your ISP.
Go into the airport utility and setup the TC as router for your network .. it is a simple setup.. but I would do as stated.. all short names, no spaces pure alphanumeric rather than accept Apple's names. That is for TC and wireless.
After 20min power up the cable modem.  Once it is running and you have internet access. you can proceed to setup the express to do the airplay. If the internet still doesn't work, power off the cable modem overnight..
Do not lose that express setup so if you absolutely have to, you can at any time substitute it back and have internet again.
So everything is working properly TC in place as full router.. now hard reset the express.. and simply use the airport utility to put it in extend wireless .. or plug in by ethernet if you are going to hard wire it.
The extend wireless setup is all done straight from the existing setup.
Now you can plug your express audio port into your speaker.. and setup the airplay via the itunes.
I will get Bob to give you his way of doing it.. There is no one RIGHT way .. but he can give you more info if you want a particular method.
