Time capsule and ipad

I have a 2T time capsule. I have 3 Macs that use it for time machine backups. There is plenty of room on it so I have a few files on it that I can access from any Mac.
A Mac sees a file easily just by accessing the drive.
How can I access a file from the iPad? I just want to read a special PDF.

I don't want to keep the file on the iPad.
also I don't want to access the iPad from a computer.
I just want to access a PDF on the time capsule.
And the time capsule is not a computer.
I can access a PDF on my other computers by putting it in the sites folder of the computer. Then i view it as a web page since I know the addresses of the other computers. But even if I know the address of the time capsule, there is no sites folder to do that.
Would these other Programs access the time capsule and see files on it?

  • I have a 2T apple time capsule and router. I bought a Hauppauge WinTV extender which allows regular TV to be broadcasted on a PC. The program allows streaming to a Mac or iPad, iPhone, etc. I need to open a port on the router to allow this to work.

I have a 2T apple time capsule and router. I bought a Hauppauge Win TV extender which allows TV to be broadcasted on a PC. The program allows for the TV to be streamed on a Mac, Iphone, Ipad. I need to access the router set up options to open a port on the router to allow this program to stream the TV to the Mac and Iphone. I do not know how to access the apple time capsule router to change the settings to open a port on the router. help please.

Firstly you do not need to open ports to stream locally.. there is no port block in local LAN.. only WAN to LAN. So there is a good chance it is not needed at all..
Opening ports on the TC I strongly recommend a v5 airport utility.. you can download one for windows if you don't have a Mac.. iOS version of the utility I am not sure but it will not work to do complex things.
In the v5 utility go to the NAT area, and click on port mappings.
Sorry I don't have a screen shot at the moment of the actual mapping page.. but simply put the IP of the device you want opened and the port.
There are plenty of posts with this info if you google.
But as noted.. this is purely WAN to LAN.. nothing else.

  • Can i store my movies on the time capsule and access to watch on my new ipad?

can I store my movies on the time capsule and access wireless to watch on my new ipad?

TC is not a media player.. it has no smarts whatsoever.
If you have an app on the ipad to play files.. then the ipad can play files from anywhere.. even the TC.. but the TC contributes nothing. Do not move your itunes library to the TC.. that is asking for trouble.

  • I have changed the name and password for my Time Capsule and now the Time Machine will not connect

    Mac Book Pro
    1TB Time Capsule.
Yesterday I changed the name and password on my time capsule and also the name and password of the wifi network as I was having problems with the speed of the internet when using Safari on any of my devices (1 Macbook pro, 1 macbook air, 27" iMac, iPhone and iPad) all other internet services were working fine (email etc.) This seems to have solved the problem.
However, since then, my time machine back ups will not reconnect and there is no option for me to reconnect to the existing back up for my macbook pro.
When I enter the time machine preferences it shows as below that there are no back ups.
Then, when I go to select a drive to use which should be the MacBook under the Backup disks the only option is for me to Remove Disk...
So, my question is, how do I reconnect to an existing Time Machine back up for my MacBook pro as I really do not want to erase and start all over again.
Warning - In my naiveté, I did click on the MacBook in 'Available Disks' but I got the impression that it was about to start a whole new back up and not work with the existing one.
(And does anybody have an inkling as to why there was a problem with Safari on all my devices? I downloaded Google Chrome and that worked fine).

    Simply reset the Time Machine.
    See A4 here http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You can then mount the TC disk in finder after you reboot the computer.
You should be able to reselect the TC disk and then it will say it is going to start a new backup.
Ignore this.. when the TM actually loads the TC disk it will discover the existing backup and continue the backup.. but it will give no hint until it actually starts that it won't start a new backup. you just have to believe it won't.. and mostly it works..
Please also install the widget A1 so you have some idea what TM is doing.

  • How can I set up a wi-fi network, using one time capsule and two airport express

how can I set up a wi-fi network, using one time capsule and two airport express ?
The time capsule is near the Mac. ok
The first Airport is on the corridor, ok, works well and the App on the iPad signals so, ok
But when I plug the next Airport on another room nearby nothing happens, and signals disconected ....
is the signal so weak that is not able to go to ono room to the other ?

Well, even if you have the first express set up to extend the network, the second express can only extend from the TimeCapsule.
Maybe you got walls of sheetrook in the way, or kitchen/bathroom tiles, etc, dampening the signal rapidly.

  • I have a time capsule and two air port expresses. The time capsule is in the middle of my house, the expresses equidistant in opposite directions. I would like the expresses to both connect directly to the capsule, but they are connected in serial. How?

I have a time capsule and two air port expresses. The time capsule is in the middle of my house, the expresses equidistant in opposite directions. I would like the expresses to both connect directly to the capsule, but they are connected in serial. How to reconfigure.
I ask because I have music running out of both expresses, and the one that is most distant from the time capsule (routed through the first express) regularly drops the music signal from itunes. And I am guessing the serial configuration of the routers has something to do with this, but my root problem is music dropout - any thoughts would be appreciated.

If you have the the most current model of the Express devices, the default setup is to "extend" the wireless signal.  In this type of setup, each Express communicates directly to the Time Capsule.
How did you setup the AirPort Express devices?
What version of the Mac operating system are you using on your MacBook?   Or, do you have AirPort Utility installed on your iPad?

  • Is there any downside to using a reference type library if I use Time Capsule and will do file management only from within Aperture?

Have done a lot of reading to get prepared to convert to Aperture 3 and have this question regarding setting up my library type.
I'm not a professional -just a heavy user hobbyist.
It appears that the major factors in using reference style is to backup the images with Time Capsule and always do moves or deletes from within the Aperture application.
If my architecture matters here's what I have that may be involved in photo management and editing:
iMac (latest 27" high power version with lots of memory)
Internal 2TB HD where the library is stored
External (FireWire) 2TB HD where the images are stored
External (FireWire) 6TB HD backup drive
In the future an iPad for remote work on images (when/if available) and a Mac laptop (for same remote use)
I see major downside issues to letting the library manage my files - such as inaccessibility (or awkward accessibility) to the images for other programs, and performance issues when the library gets large (thousands of images or 100+ gb in size)
The chief complaints I've seen regarding using a reference mode is the broken link issues created if file management is done outside of Aperture (adds, deletes, moves of files) and the inability to use the Vault function for backup.
One feature that I imagine I'd like to have is maximum integration with Final Cut Pro X and that's one area I haven't seen much on and would be interested to hear about if that integration is affected with the choice of managed vs referenced library types. (I like to produce film clips that are combinations of pics and video and want to be set up so that is done in the easiest fashion when working in FCP X)
I'm sure I've not seen all sides of this issue and would like to see some discussion around this question.
    Thanks to everyone contributing!

Goody, Goody, you hit a few of my favorite subjects! Herewith some comments, with the usual caveats - true to the best of my knowledge and experience, others may have different results, YMMV, and I could be wrong.
I run Aperture on two machines:
-- 2007 Mac Pro with 2x2.66 GHz Xeon, 21 GB of RAM, a 5770 GPU, and multiple HD. I have about 11,000 images, taking up 150 GB. (Many are 100 MB TIFF, scanned slides)
-- 2006 Mac Book Pro with 1 2.0 GHz Core Duo, 2 GB of RAM and a 240 GB SSD.
    Two very different machines.
-- Aperture Libraries are all the same - Managed or Referenced. If Managed, then the Master image files are inside the Package, if Referenced, they are outside, and you can have any combination you want. Managed is easier, but Referenced is not hard if you are the least bit careful.
-- While the sheer size of an Aperture Library is not a big issue, the location on disk of the different components can have a tremendous impact on performance.
-- Solid State Drives (SSD) read and write faster than regular Hard Disks (HD) and, what is more important, empty HD read and write much faster than full HD.
-- Aperture speed requires a combination of RAM, CPU, graphics processing unit (GPU) speed, and disk speed. The more RAM you have, the less paging you will see. With enough RAM, the next bottle neck is CPU (speed and cores) and GPU speed. But even then you will still have to fetch an image (longer if you pull the full resolution Master, read and rewrite the Version file, and update the Preview and Thumbs.
    So what works?
-- RAM, RAM, and more RAM. 4 GB will work, but you will page a bit. 8 GB is much faster. On my old MacPro the sweet spot was about 16 GB of RAM.
-- Keep your Library on your fastest (usually internal) drive. Keep that disk as unloaded as possible. How do you keep it unloaded? Either buy BIG, 1 TB+ or move your Masters off onto another disk. The good news here is that as Master files are written only once and never rewritten, speed of this disk, as opposed to the disk that holds the Library, is not important. There is a one second pause as the Master is read into memory and, if you have enough RAM, that is it - the Master will never be paged out. If, on the other hand, you do not have enough RAM, and you do a lot of adjusting at full resolution, then the speed of the disk that holds your Masters will become very important due to paging.
-- I found that I picked up a tiny bit of speed by keeping the Masters on a dedicated disk. Thus, in your configuration, if you can dedicate that 2 TB FW HD to your Masters, you should see very nice performance.
Final notes on backups and archives:
-- One conventional wisdom is that you should make an archive copy of every image file before or as you load them into your system. (Aperture in this case.) This archive is then never touched or deleted.
-- An alternative approach is that you do not keep such an archive, but only the images that you have in your Aperture Library. And when you delete from the Library, you no longer keep a copy anywhere.
    I do the following:
-- Card to Aperture. Card is then kept at least 24 hours until all of my backups have run. (I use three - Time Machine, Clone, and off site.)
-- I do not keep archive copies. If I decide to delete a file, my only recourse is to recover it from Time Machine during the six month cycle of my Time Machine backups. Thereafter, it is lost.
There are merits to both approaches.
Hope this is clear, correct, and responsive to your needs.

  • HT1449 Can I move my iTunes library onto Time Capsule and share it across my devices (similar to a NAS drive)?

    Hi
Would anyone know if I can I move my iTunes library onto Time Capsule and share it across my devices (similar to a NAS drive)?
This would give me some hard drive space on my iMac and more importantly mean my iTunes library is available all the time. Although I have Home sharing I need my iMac on and if not I use iTunes on iCloud I always seem to be downloading the tracks I need.
    Current configuration / devices:
    iMac 20-inch, Mid 2007 - nearly full!
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    OSX Mavericks
    Time Capsule (1TB)
    iPad
    iPod Touch
    Apple TV
    iTunes 11.1.5 (5)
    Many thanks

What "devices" are these?  By devices I normally understand i-devices and not computers.  How many computers?
If you put the whole library on the Time Capsule (TC) you can only use it with one computer at a time because the iTunes library file can only be opened by one copy of iTunes at a time.  If you put only media on the TC but have a copy of the library files on each computer you can use media by multiple computers but you then have the headache of trying to make sure that any changes done to the collection by one computer are mirrored by the libraries on the other computers which will be more or less independent.
I hope this TC isn't also your backup drive.  When the TC drive fails (and it will someday) then your whole collection is gone.  Don't rely upon Apple to always have copies for you to download.  For one, if a distributor puylls an item then it is gone period.  Additionally, Apple only keeps media, not the actual organization that is your set of library files.  If you do this, buy another backup drive.

  • Can I store iphoto pictures in time capsule and use with pad

Can I store iphoto pictures in time capsule and use with pad

We can tell you that it is possible to store separate images on the Time Capsule drive. If however, you are asking if you can access separate images from your Time Machine backups on the Time Capsule, this is not possible.
How you get the images that your want from iPhoto on your Mac to the Time Capsule drive is a question for the iPhoto experts. It will likely involve "exporting" the files that you want and then moving them using the Finder to the Time Capsule drive.
How you access those images on the Time Capsule from an iPad is a question for the Using iPad experts.

  • How can I get Airplay to work with my 3TB Time Capsule and my two AV receivers

I have researched the net to death and my only solace is I don't appear to be alone. I have a 3TB Time Capsule that has a Denon and Pioneer receiver attached to it by ethernet. Also connected to the time capsule our three apple TV's. I can use airplay with my iPhones and iPads to the Apple TV but can't get either the Denon or the Pioneer to show up as Air Play options on any IOS Devices or my two Mac's.
I have the latest firmware on the Denon and Pioneer, the latest firmware on the Time Capsule and Mac's. I have tried power cycling, inserting a switch between the receivers and the time capsule but to no avail.
    Any suggestions would be greatly

You can't officially as it relies on hardware.
A potential software solution is Airparrot.

  • I have working Netgear network. Want to add new Time Capsule and run 2nd network for new apple TV and Imac, and keep the netgear network for my PC and Canon printer.

I have working Netgear N600 dual band router network. The existing network has an XP netbook PC, canon printer, 2 Iphones, Epson Air printer, an Ipad, 3 roku boxes, backup drive. Just bought a new Apple TV box, and time capsule 2T.  I have an IMac on order but don't have it here yet.
My goal is to add new Time Capsule and create 2nd "apple" network for new apple TV, Iphones, Ipad, Epson Air printer and new Imac, and keep the netgear network for my PC, Roku TV boxes, and Canon printer and backup drive.
The Netgear router, the time capsule and new IMac will be on the same desktop, I dont need to backup my netbook PC to time capsule.
    Where do I start?
Which device connects to my modem first, the TC2 or the Netgear?
Is it best wait for the Imac before starting or can the TC2 be set up from my Ipad or PC?
    Thanks.

    It is pretty simple..
Setup the TC in bridge and plug it into the Netgear.. I would leave the netgear as the main router for now, although in the future you can swap things around. The netgear firmware may have issues with bonjour and airplay/airprint?? Does your ipad print ok now?
You can setup the TC using Mac, PC (at least up to win7) or iOS.. they all have airport utility available.
Bridge mode is set differently depending on the version of the utility. This is v5 and how the windows one will look (at least similar to).
    v6 will be as
With the TC in bridge you will still create a wireless network.. and give it a different name from the netgear.. then all the apple devices can connect to it. Use ethernet rather than wireless if the imac is on the desktop with it. Much faster and better for using Time Machine backups.
If you run into any issues.. just post the particular issue. It will take a bit of getting used to, but isn't hard.

  • Accessing Time Capsule and linked external hard drive from other devices and copying to these drives

    Hi
Please be gentle. I am not that technically able :-)
I have managed to set up my time capsule. Router working, external hard drive linked, time machine back ups working...
The last thing I am looking to do is to access files on my time capsule and also external hard drive (linked to it), from Mac, Iphones, Ipads, Apple TV, Windows laptops X2. Am I able to do that? Have read so many discussions but dont get the answer. Please be gentle :-)
    Regards
    Tommy

The last thing I am looking to do is to access files on my time capsule and also external hard drive (linked to it), from Mac
This should be automatic.. find the TC disk under shared in finder.. double click it and see under the data folder.. you can create new folders in there.
Note using the TC for data and TM backups is not the greatest of ideas.. please read pondini.
    Q3 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
The external drive is fine though..
Now it can have loads of issues if you run Mavericks.. so if you have trouble.. do not be surprised.. if you run Mavericks.. be surprised if it works without trouble.
    Iphones, Ipads
iOS devices are not file based.. they are not intended to be used with a file device like TC and will neither backup to it nor open files from it.. of course what apple wants and what users want are different things so there are plenty of file apps to help you read and write files.
    Filebrowser is the major one.
    http://www.stratospherix.com/products/filebrowser/
You still cannot backup though.. iOS uses itunes to backup or icloud.
    Apple TV
There is nothing you can do with AppleTV.. it is not a file device at all.. it is not even a media player.. it is a streamer. (Early model Gen1 and Gen2 can be jailbreak.. so they do actually have media player ability) Gen3 is tied to its mother's (iTunes) skirts with steel cables.. no JB.. no use really. If you want to play movies from a TC buy a WD Live TV.. it is a player.. !!
    Windows laptops X2
You can access the TC from windows..
    1. Make sure the TC naming complies with windows networking.. to put that simply.. all names should be short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Apple wizard will recommend a name for the TC, like
Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule.. this is wrong on so many levels.
It will be a total pain on windows.. use FBATC or TC or anything you like.. as long as it follows the rules..
Short 2-20 characters.. less than 10 is better.
    No spaces.
    Pure alphanumeric.
All names must comply.. TC name and wireless name/s
    2. Load the airport utility for windows into the computer.. you can download for up to win7.. apple haven't bothered with windows since then and are pretty out of date. The win7 utility will load on win8 with the usual voodoo and astrological help.
    3. Windows must be set to home for location.. if you cannot open a command window and ping the TC by ip and name, then pull down the firewalls.
    4. In windows explorer type into the address bar directly.
\\TCname or \\TCIPaddress (using, of course, the real name or real IP).

  • Would like my macbook pro to only connect to time capsule and not to airport express that is extending network.  Is there a way to do this?

I have a network set up with a main time capsule and airport express.  The airport express is configured to extend network.  While its fine for our iphones and ipad to connect to the express, I would like the Macbook pro to only connect to the time capsule as it seems to run faster.  Any way to do this?

You are extending the 2.4ghz.. as that is the only way you can connect iphones.
But if you have Gen2 or later TC you can setup 5ghz to use a different wireless name to 2.4ghz.. and it is much faster.. you need to be close to the TC though.. like in the same room.
Make sure you download 5.6 airport utility if you haven't already.. go to the wireless options and the extra wireless area.. set a different wireless name (SSID in everybody but apple's book). Then you can deliberately select it.

  • USB printing through Time Capsule from Ipad or iphone

I connected my printer thru the USB of my Time Capsule, and I can print wirelessly from my iMac, but my iPhone and my iPad do not see the printer. It has to be air printing enable or is there other way to do it?
    Thanks!!

The bottom line here is the mobile devices use a different operating system than a Mac computer.

  • Time capsule and air play

I'd like to use my time capsule with iPad and iPhone, I would also like to see the contents of time capsules (photos and video) with apple tv. I think an update would suffice.

You cannot see content with Apple TV unless you either JB the ATV or load iTunes on to the TC.. which is not recommended.
I am not sure what update you are hoping for??
The iOS by its nature cannot read files if you store them on the TC you will need a file app loaded on the iOS devices.
