Time Capsule and IPhone 4 802.11 n 2,4GHZ issue

Hi,
I was trying to connect all my devices to the best signal I am broadcasting: The IPAD, also the AppleTV and all Macs go automatically to the n network (5 GHZ) which is exactly what I want. The IPod is the only device with b/g capability which connects to the 2,4GHZ network well. There is only one problem with the IPhone 4, which never connects with the n 2,4GHZ network when the radio setting is set to 802.11 n only (5 GHZ) - 802.11 b/g/n. I was trying to change the radio band several times but either the IPod was not connected or the IPhone 4 was just b/g. If I set it to 802.11 n only (5 GHZ) - 802.11 n only (2,4 GHZ) it works for the IPhone but the IPod Touch is then excluded from the entire network.
I did several resets to my complete network and all devices, I have changed channels to manual and back - no effect. Is there a setting which works for all? Like 802.11 n only (5 GHZ) - 802.11 b/g/n (2,4 GHZ)? Please let me know.
I know it doesn't belong here but I have still another issue with the strict NAT for my XBOX 360. Do you have there any new solutions?
Many thanks for reading my post! Greetings from Holland.
Sebastian

  • Time Capsule and iPhone question

I recently replaced my Airport Extreme (802.1b/g) with a Time Capsule and went through the standard installation and setup procedure - no problems. I assumed that the TC was operating in 802.11N mode - there did not seem to be an option to set during the installation process. I must admit that I did not notice a marked improvement in my network speed but assumed all was well. Now some weeks lated I bought an iPhone - it immediately connected to my network. I did not even think about the N vs b/g issue. Now reading this forum I noticed that iPhones are b/g so does this mean my network automatically "downgraded" from N to b/g or has it always been running in b/g. Note I before I installed my T/C I turned-off my old AE.
I cannot figure out how to determine what mode my network / TC is running in. Can I easily swap back and forth when I need to have my iPhone connected.
I have read the thread on this forum on how to have 2 bridged networks - one with N and one with b/g (might be a good way to put my old AE and Airport Express to some use) - since I'm no network wizzard I like to keep things simple - by doing so I seem to avoid many of the issues I read about on the forum
    Thanks for any advice.

Hi Pat, I have an iPhone too and I'm quite disappointed that my nice new N router will be running at much lower speeds. When I'm at home I use both my MBP and my phone and switching back and forth doesnt sound appealing.
Anyway, to answer your question, open up the Airport Utility and click Manual Setup at bottom right. Then click on Wireless from the 4 tabs you'll see and choose the appropriate setting from the Radio Mode drop down menu.
    Hope this helps!

  • Time Capsule and iPhone 4

    Hi,
I am sharing an external hard disk on my iMac and macbook pro via Time Capsule.....
I want to access movies, music and other files on this shared drive from my iPhone 4...
Is there any way of accessing this shared drive on time capsule from iPhone ....
    Thanks in advance......

You can use zumocast to stream content to your iPhone. You do have to install the app on at least 1 of your Macs as well. Zumocast is mainly for music and movies; I'm not sure how it handles other types of data.

  • Time Capsule and iPhone 3G Connection Issues

Just rolled out a new Time Capsule (current gen). All but one device was able to connect perfectly including two Mac Minis, iPad and Lenovo laptop (work). However, the iPhone 3G is showing as connected with a checkmark in settings but no wifi icon (just 3G) and I can't connect to iTunes for remote, etc.
So far, I've done the following:
Reset Network Settings in the iPhone 3G. Rebooted Time Capsule.
To note, we set this up to "replace a current network" since we needed the SSID to be the same.
    Solutions?

    How is the TC setup??
If it is in bridge then it should have no impact on the connection at all.. so please tell us that..
If it is in router mode and was working in router mode, I do not know why it will have stopped.

  • How can I safe my data back from the Time capsule to iphone and macbook?

    Hi,
last weekend we were robbed while being on vacation and iphones and macbook air got stolen. Good thing was that at home we had a time capsule and our normal macbook. As soon as we get the new iphones and the new airbook we want to get our itunes and apps and datas back to the iphones and airbook ... can somebody tell us how to re-safe or back-safe stuff from the time capsule back to the equipment?
Thank you ... I feel so "naked" without my phone :-(
    Virtualkate

Sorry about your loss. Follow the directions here to use Time Capsule to restore your new Air to the state your old Air was in when stolen. When you first connect your new phones, you'll be given the option of restoring from the backup of your old phones or setting up as new. Restore from your previous backups, followed by syncing your content back to your phones. You should be good to go. Maintaining current backups makes this a piece of cake.

  • I have a 2T apple time capsule and router. I bought a Hauppauge WinTV extender which allows regular TV to be broadcasted on a PC. The program allows streaming to a Mac or iPad, iPhone, etc. I need to open a port on the router to allow this to work.

I have a 2T apple time capsule and router. I bought a Hauppauge Win TV extender which allows TV to be broadcasted on a PC. The program allows for the TV to be streamed on a Mac, Iphone, Ipad. I need to access the router set up options to open a port on the router to allow this program to stream the TV to the Mac and Iphone. I do not know how to access the apple time capsule router to change the settings to open a port on the router. help please.

Firstly you do not need to open ports to stream locally.. there is no port block in local LAN.. only WAN to LAN. So there is a good chance it is not needed at all..
Opening ports on the TC I strongly recommend a v5 airport utility.. you can download one for windows if you don't have a Mac.. iOS version of the utility I am not sure but it will not work to do complex things.
In the v5 utility go to the NAT area, and click on port mappings.
Sorry I don't have a screen shot at the moment of the actual mapping page.. but simply put the IP of the device you want opened and the port.
There are plenty of posts with this info if you google.
But as noted.. this is purely WAN to LAN.. nothing else.

  • Accessing iTunes media on Time Capsule from iPhone and iPad

    Hello!
I keep my iTunes media files on a Time Capsule and access them on my MacBook Air, having changed the location of the media files in iTunes Preferences. This works fine.
Can I do the same sort of thing on my iPad and iPhone? I know I can use "home sharing" via my MacBook, if I am having to use that, I may as well play the media on my MacBook anyway. I would like to be able to do it directly, without another computer being involved.
I have tried apps like Buzz player, which is tedious in the extreme, and plays vidoes jerkily, if at all. I want to be able to connect iTunes directly to the media on the Time Capsule, if you see what I mean.
And if not, why not, Apple?
    Thanks,
    Matt

Google finds many articles on how to move your iTunes to an external hard drive.
Here's the first hit in the list:

  • Extending a network with Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme (via Belkin powerline)

    Hello -
I've seen many topics about extending wireless networks here, but none seems to resolve the issue I'm having. I currently have a setup where a DSL cable modem is connected to a Time Capsule and I need to extend this network to another room using an AirPort Extreme.
I live in a very old apartment in Brazil and the walls seem to block the signal from one room to another, hence the need to extend it. Since wireless signal is very weak between rooms, I bought a Belkin powerline AV500 so I could connect both Time Capsule and AirPort using the electrical power at home (just installing a regular Ethernet cable between rooms is not an option).
I started with the basics: configure the Time Capsule + DSL as a standalone network, and it works perfectly within it's range. Then I connected the Belking powerline, plugged a MacBook via Ethernet on the other end and still got very good results (actually better speed than expected). Used it for a while with streaming and other network intensive tasks to make sure it could sustain the connection.
Finally, pluggned the AirPort Extreme on the Belking powerline and this is where the problems started. AirPort Utility 6.3.1 only gives me the option of extending a network wirelessly - it doesn't seem to give me the option of extending it via Etherenet (roaming), which is not good in my case. Luckly I had a copy of AirPort Utility 5.6 which seems to do the job (or I thought so), but it's still not working well.
Although I managed to configure both with the same name, it doesn't seem reliable and some devices (the iPhone 5, for example) are unable to connect and end up with a self-asigned IP address. I'm almost sure I'm doing something wrong on the setup, as I've seen a similar setup working before, so if anyone out there has any clue of what can be done, it will be much appreciated.
Attached the screenshots of both Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme configurations.
    Thanks a lot,

Hello JuliaApple. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
You have several ways to configure both base stations for what you are trying to do.
The simplest would be to configure the Time Capsule (TC) to "join" (AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Wireless tab > Wireless Mode = Join a wireless network) your existing 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). In this type of configuration the TC would perform as any other wireless client and not perform as a router. It will; however, still allow for both backups and sharing USB devices attached to it.

  • Verizon FIOS, Time Capsule, and Airport Express - How to Extend Network

OK, I just got Verizon FIOS (TV, Internet, and phone). Don't care for the wireless router that is required to be used with it (want 802.11n and Time Capsule). I turned of the wireless on the Verizon FIOS router and installed a Time Capsule in Bridge Mode, which is how the Verizon rep told me to install it. As I understand it, the Verizon FIOS router is still handling DHCP, NAT, etc. I would like to extend the wireless network to reach some dead spots in my house. I have read that the Airport Express can be used to extend a wireless network from an Airport Extreme or Time Capsule, but it appears that I need to set up a WDS with the Time Capsule as the base station, which is apparently not possible on the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode. I am desperately seeking any advice on how to use Verizon FIOS, my Time Capsule, and extend the wireless network to reach the farther corners of the house. I am using a Macbook and a Thinkpad as well as an iPhone on the wireless network with a Dell desktop connected to the Time Capsule via Ethernet. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Before I switched, I had Cox Cable with a Buffalo wireless router and it had great range. Now I seem to be in a worse situation from a wireless perspective with higher TV and Internet quality. Thanks in advance.

If you have an AirPort Express(n), you can configure it to "extend a wireless network". This is a more efficient way to add additional wireless coverage (and much easier to configure than a WDS arrangement).
However, if you have an older "b/g" AirPort Express, you must use the WDS configuration method with this device and the Time Capsule if you want to increase your wireless coverage.

  • Time Capsule and time machine with third party router

    Hi,
This is the first time I use this site.
I have over three years old Mackbook.
    APP has expired.
Now I want to know how to set up time capsule in a new environment.
I moved from Australian and Singapore.
I was using Time Capsule and Airport Extreme in Australia.
    I have moved to Singapore.
I am using router provided by Singtell(Singapore Telecommunication). I do not have an Airport Extreme anymore. My housemate and I are using wireless internet-sharing. Needless to say that internet provider is SingTell.
Now I would like to know how to use time capsule and time machine with the network created with a router provided by SingTell.
    What I did so far is;
Connected the time capsule to the power point.
Orange lamp lit and flashed for a few second and stop. Orange lamp stayed on.
Apple Utility does not recognise Time Capsule.
I prefer to use it wirelessly.
There are only two USB cable ports installed.
One is used to synchronize iPhone.
Other is used for a printer.
but if it is not possible, wired would be OK.
    MacBook 13 inch 2.0 GH Late 2006
I hope that someone able to give me an answer for this.
    Cheers,

In this case the apple support people reveal a truly poor understanding.
You must bridge something.. you either bridge the TC.. which 90% of people do.. or you bridge the dsl router.. which some people do manage to do.. You will have to look that up for your modem and check with verizon if they support pppoe authentication.
IMHO just bridge the TC as you were told not to do.. as they are simply wrong about that.
If you already tried this and it didn't work.. try again.. it is the correct approach.
You have no choice. But this time let me suggest you do it using the 5.6 airport utility.. as the apple toyland v6 airport utility is likely half your trouble.
So here is how to get the utility into your computer.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
For screen shots see this post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4668746?tstart=0
Then open the manual setup on the 5.6 utility.. go to internet tab. Connection sharing.. off bridged mode.
    Select this and update..
Then all your IP addresses will be wrong.. I suspect this is where things are going wrong.. and messing you up.
Once the TC is bridged.. turn off everything and restart.. in correct order.. modem.. TC.. client computers etc. 2min gap between each.

  • I have changed the name and password for my Time Capsule and now the Time Machine will not connect

    Mac Book Pro
    1TB Time Capsule.
Yesterday I changed the name and password on my time capsule and also the name and password of the wifi network as I was having problems with the speed of the internet when using Safari on any of my devices (1 Macbook pro, 1 macbook air, 27" iMac, iPhone and iPad) all other internet services were working fine (email etc.) This seems to have solved the problem.
However, since then, my time machine back ups will not reconnect and there is no option for me to reconnect to the existing back up for my macbook pro.
When I enter the time machine preferences it shows as below that there are no back ups.
Then, when I go to select a drive to use which should be the MacBook under the Backup disks the only option is for me to Remove Disk...
So, my question is, how do I reconnect to an existing Time Machine back up for my MacBook pro as I really do not want to erase and start all over again.
Warning - In my naiveté, I did click on the MacBook in 'Available Disks' but I got the impression that it was about to start a whole new back up and not work with the existing one.
(And does anybody have an inkling as to why there was a problem with Safari on all my devices? I downloaded Google Chrome and that worked fine).

    Simply reset the Time Machine.
    See A4 here http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You can then mount the TC disk in finder after you reboot the computer.
You should be able to reselect the TC disk and then it will say it is going to start a new backup.
Ignore this.. when the TM actually loads the TC disk it will discover the existing backup and continue the backup.. but it will give no hint until it actually starts that it won't start a new backup. you just have to believe it won't.. and mostly it works..
Please also install the widget A1 so you have some idea what TM is doing.

  • I have a 1st generation time capsule and an extreme b/g. Is the extreme slowing the network down

I have a 1st generation time capsule and an appe extreme b/g. Is the extreme slowing the network down? Should I dump it an get the new n version?

yes it is likely to be slowing down the network because you are using 802.11b/g
from what i recall with b/g a slow client can slow down the entire network to that clients speed.
this was the major improvement with 802.11n and Mimo. each client can be connected to the access point without affecting your speed to the rest of the network
its reccomended to get all new "N" equipment if you have the budget for it. some of those old airports and time capsules can still be worth something on amazon marketplace so you might be able to sell them
if you want to create / join / extend a netwowrk your going to probably need all "n" based equipment.
buy the new 4th generation time capsule or the new 5th generation airport they have better stronger radios
in the mean time configure your base station router to a high multicast rate, so it will prevent devices connecting to it at 1-2 mbps speeds and slowing down your network
if you have an apple care covered mac remember the airport / time capsule rule. all airports and time capsules purchased 2 years before you bought your mac to the 3 years of apple care covers them. if you do not have apple care then the standard warranty applies

  • Poor network speed with 1st generation time capsule and multiple airport express 5Ghz. My network speed slows to a crawl when not close to the time capsule. I get the range that I need, but the speed is painfully slow.

    Hello,
I have a first generation time capsule running 802.11n (b/g compatable) and the airport expresse's are the newer 5ghz models. I have 3 airport express's and I have the range that I need. I can run the time capsule using 802.11n 5ghz, but I loose the range and can't connect to all of the airport express's. My computers and mobile devices run 802.11n. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to increase the network speed. Would the new airport extreme fix the problem?
    Thank you

Unfortunately, you are experiencing one of the downsides to 5 GHz. That's because the higher frequency 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals.
After all, you always have to give up something to gain something else. In the case of 5 GHz, you gain potential speed but in return, you must give up penetration power and distance capability.
In order to work well, 5 GHz signals need to almost have a line-of-sight relationship between devices. Unless you can achieve this, you will do much better to leave the Time Capsule running at the 802.11n (b/g compatible) 2.4 GHz Radio Mode and allow the Express devices to "extend" that network.
As for the location of the AirPort Express devices in an exended network, that is critical for best performance. That's because the Express can only "extend" the quality and bandwidth of the signal that it receives. Post back if you need a few more tips on how to find the best location for the AirPort Express devices.
Would the new airport extreme fix the problem?
    Unfortunately, no.

  • Apple TV Inference with Time Capsule and Airport express?

I have recently bought an Apple TV 2, which seem to be working fine, however since installing it on my wireless network both my Time Capsule and Airport Express can't be found. Following some fault finding it seems that when I unplug the Apple TV I can reconfingure the TC and AE.
The TC and AE are configured to join my existing network....and have happy sat there for a few years.
I would really welcome any ideas.
    Thanks
    R

    Welcome to the discussions!
It sounds like you have the basic configuration covered correctly.
You might want to check some settings on the TC:
Wireless Mode would be create a wireless network
"Allow this network to be extended" should be checked
The AX should be set to "extend a wireless network"
The "allow wireless clients" box should be checked
In this configuration, the ethernet port on the AX is active so things should work.
A minor point...Although the TC is a dual band device, the AirPort Express is not. Can you make sure that that the Express is connecting to the "main" network on your TC? The "guest" network cannot be "extended".
If you place your laptop close to the Express and hold down the option key while you click on the AirPort icon, some connection information will be displayed. The MAC address of the device that the laptop is connecting to will be indicated. Make sure that that this is the MAC address of the AX, and not the TC.
Another note...If you have not changed the default "main" network, the radio mode is broadcasting 802.11n only at 5 GHz. These higher frequencies are absorbed by walls, ceilings and any obstructions much more quickly than 2.4 GHz signals. So, if you AX is some distance away, you may not be receiving a strong signal for the device at that location.
If you have a signal strength utility on your laptop (the "bars" at the top of the screen are not a very good indicator of actual signal strength), turn off the AX and take a reading to see what kind of signal the Express is receiving where it is located.
Please post back with your results.
