Time Capsule and operating system backup

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and the timecapsule for backups. My question is does the Time Capsule backup the operating system as well as files. I understood that it did but when I did my first backup it only took an hour. I have many songs and lots of photos on my hard drive.
I worry that it didn't complete the backup.
Any thoughts or sugestions?

Yes. Time Machine, which is the software that the Time Capsule hardware uses, should backup everything.

  • Can I use the Time Capsule strictly for system backup and continue to use my Airport Extreme for all my wireless needs

I want to use the Apple Time Capsule as an external drive and continue to use my Airport Extreme for all my wireless needs. Can I do that? The reason I ask is that my Time Machine utility cannot find the TIme Capsule - it only shows me the Airport Extreme, even when I "Rescan". SO I am unable to use the Time Capsule.

You will need to connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.
Perform a "hard reset" on the Time Capsule by holding in the reset button for 9-10 seconds, then give it another minute to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Open AirPort Utility, select the Time Capsule, and click Manual Setup
Click the Time Capsule tab located below the row of icons to assign a name to the Time Capsule, a device password, and adjust Time Zone settings.
Next, click the Wireless tab located to the right of the Time Capsule tab
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to Off
Click the Internet icon, then click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update at the lower right to save the settings and allow 30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart to a green light.
    You are all set

  • Time capsule and deleting old backups

Hi after performing a recent backup to an external drive I don't have much space left on the disk. It says that time capsule will delete old backups. Does this mean that any movies backed up in these early back ups will be deleted as I no longer have them on my MacBook due to the amount of space they take up?

Time Machine is not an archive, it is a rolling backup.
If you want to keep files permanently, you must not store them only in Time Machine. If you don't have space for the movies on your main drive, buy a drive to use as an archive, put those movies on it, and make sure that disk is backed up too, since if data exists in only one place it is vulnerable.
My family digital archive doesn't fit on my internal drive so it is on an external drive. I also maintain two exact backup copies of that external drive. One is in the fire safe at home, the other is in a safe deposit box, and those two backups are rotated periodically. If the original and the backup are lost due to fire, burglary, etc., the off-site backup means there is still a safe copy somewhere. Because I can't afford to lose those photos, movies, and financial records. Online backup is another option for making sure you won't ever lose data you need to keep.

  • Time Capsule and iTunes full backup problem

    Hi,
Every time I add something to my iTunes library the time capsule does a full backup of the entire library rather than just doing an incremental backup.
This has only been happening for the last month or so but it is very annoying and has resulted in my 2TB time capsule starting to delete older backups!
Any ideas why this might be happening and any suggestions on how to solve it?
I could delete all the previous backups and start again but would prefer not to have to do that.
    Thanks,
    Anthony

  • Remounting an old time Capsule and accessing prior  backups

I was using a Time Capsule but it filled up.  I decided to move my Time Machine to an external hard drive and keep the Time Capsul as an archive.
Now I would like to retreive a file frorm the archive. However when I redirect Time Machine to the old Time Capsule if is creating new backups but is not seeing the old ones.  The disk is still full so I believe that they are still theere.
Question - how do I get Time Machine to let me access the old backups?

Try a right-click on the Time Machine icon on the dock, and then click Browse Other Time Machine Disks to see if  your backups are there.
To return to your current backup set, click the Time Machine clock icon at the top of the computer screen. Click Time Machine Preferences and then click Select Disk to highlght your Time Capsule drive and then click Use for Backup. This will get your regular backups going again.

  • Time Capsule and Windows 7 backup tool

So I own a TC that works excellent with my Mac Books. Now that I have my Mac's all backed up with TC I want to cover myself on my W7 machine. After doing some reading I found that W7 has a backup tool thank can backup to an external drive or network drive. I attached a drive to my TC and want to backup my W7 system to that. There seems to be some setting involved so before I start messing around has anyone done this yet and can confirm it works well? The last thing I want to do is mess with backups.

doesnt work for me, its a real dealbreaker.
I've tried manually adding and editing the lmcompatability registry key, mapping via explorer, mapping via net use, browsing via unc, tried with airport config software and without, mapped via IP and mapped via hostname.
The thing is just flakey and doesnt work.
    I've tried firmware 7.4, 7.41 and 7.42. As you say, 7.3 is no-go with a dualband.
The problem for me isn't mapping the drive, but using it once it's mapped. files and folders fail to copy, stuff doesn't always delete, drive sometimes becomes unavailable. The TC is solid otherwise.
There has to be another registry setting to change somewhere though hopefully. Either that or they've tightened the security within win7 to the point of no return for some legacy stuff.

  • About time capsule and external hard disk

I have got rMBP.  I also have got time capsule.  External WD hard disk is connected to time capsule.
I have got 3 users in my rMBP:
    (1) Admin : Administrator
    (2) User A : I normally do all my work from this user.
    (3) User B: I recently added this new user.
Here, using Finder tabs, User A can see time capsule and External WD hard disk.  But, Admin and User B cannot. I also want User B to have the ability to see WD hard disk (and time capsule).  For User B and Admin, time capsule does show up, but it shows as not connected.  How can I provide User B the ability to see External WD hard disk (since User B needs to store large different files there)?  Any permission issue on hard disk?
(Amazingly backup does take place automatically even if I am connected as User B or Admin).
I will appreciate your feedback.  Thanks.

Once the external HD is turned on my Time Capsule is not longer recognized. I can't connect to Time Capsule and make any backups. It is also no longer appearing in the Airport settings.
you could try a power cycle on your devices. turn off modem, TC, and HD for, say, 10 minutes. turn the modem back on for 2 minutes, followed by the HD, followed by the TC.
then go airport utility > manual setup > disks. see if your HD is showing beneath the TC

  • How can I configure a second time Capsule just as a backup disc?

I bought the new 2nd Generation Time Capsule and want to backup the datas to my old Time Capsule. I connected it via USB cable A/A and got problems to configure it right. Can`t see it in the finder, to chosse it in my Intego Backup Manager Pro as the goal destiniation for the back ups. Does anybody have experience on this? Before I connected the Capsule as a net device and was able to backup the files from the new one, but not the backup Time machine file, from the Mac on which Intego Backup is running. The others did well.

You cannot use USB like this.. the TC is now and always a network drive.
So you bridge one TC and plug it by ethernet into the other one.
To copy backups you can follow these instructions for TM.
    Transfer TM backups..
    Apple doco. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5097
    Pondini doco http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
As for your other backups that is dependent on its format.. but should be simple copy and paste.

At startup hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r keys until you see a globe on the screen. Then use disk utility to partition and format the drive HSF+ and then select Reinstall Mac OS X. whatever version of OS X that originally came on your system will be installed and then you can upgrade back to Mavericks.

How can I recover the NAS back up to put on my new Time Machine.
Talking to Apple Support Adviser was a waste of time on case number 239647273
    Any thoughts or pointers?

Keep the old OS around and just kick the tires and test new OS. Apple has a history and habit of breaking support in things like this.
You can use TimeMachine as one level of backup, and even there there were changes with Lion, I would always recommend foremost backup clones of every volume. And clone (SuperDuper etc) can be stored on something like HP NAS Media Server which also was supporting TimeMachine, iTunes - until Apple made that harder and more their own proprietary format.

Rather than "upgrade" I would clone the system, and do a clean install, then allow Setup Assistant to import your files.

  • Time Capsules and System Updates

Why must I always erase my Time Capsule and re-backup after every system update?

    TexasRose58 wrote:
System Preferences > Users & Groups doesn't have an Advanced Options button...at least I don't see one in Mountain Lion on my iMac.
Yes, it does.  Follow the instructions in the pink box.
I repaired permissions, turned off Time Machine, and then upgraded from the Apps Store. After I upgraded the system, it showed Oldest Backup: None and Latest Backup: None, but it showed only about a third of the space as available, so the old backups were there.
Yes, that's confusing.  It just means the preferences window hasn't been updated.
I tried to go ahead and just backup, but it would only go about halfway into the backup and quit.
Quit how?  Did it fail with a message?  If so, what?  See #C2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.   It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.    If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages.
Or did it just hang?  If so, what is/was shown on the Preferences window?
Inside Time Machine itself, on the sliding scale to the right of the "starry sky" the old backups were red (no badges or extra icons, just the usual bars and dates).
Ah, that means those backups are on the external drive;  any white/gray ones indicate "Local Snapshots" that are on your internal HD.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #30 for details.
If you can't access them, see the pink box in FAQ #15A.
Should I have left Time Machine running during the backup? Is that where I messed up? I thought I did when I backed up from Snow Leopard to Lion, but maybe not. I don't recall for certain.
I assume you mean the browser (the "Star Wars" display).  If so, it shouldn't matter, but you won't see the new backup until and unless it completes normally.

Yes, if you are asking about using Time Machine to backup the Mac.
Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you?  If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

  • Just bought Time Capsule and do not intend to use as a router. Can I use it just as a wireless backup to my Mac?

Hi all - Just bought Time Capsule and do not intend to use as a router given that my Uverse router works splendidly.  Can I use it just as a wireless backup to my Mac? Sorry if this is a boneheaded question, but this is my first time backing up my machine ( I know, foolish). Thanks!

Your problem will be if you use wireless for internet then you cannot do both internet and backup at once.. you still should plug the TC into the uverse router and set it in bridge mode.. you can setup wireless if you like on the TC and use either TC or uverse but you must work out how to do both at once.
If you use ethernet on the Mac then wireless to backup is also a bit of an issue.. please ask as I can show you the setup.. or visa versa.. wireless for internet and ethernet for backup..
