Time capsule and Seagate external hard drive, Time capsule and Seagate external hard drive

I have Mac Book Pro with Retinal Display Mac OS X 10.8.2 connected Time Capsule 1TB using wireless network. I recently purchased Seagate Backup Plus 3TB and I connected to TC. However, I cannot find the Seagate drive on the network or via Aiport Utility. I used to have Western Digitial My Book and was able to detect the hard drive on TC. I changed to Western Digital Passport 2TB and it did not work. I wondered why it is the case. Please help me to hook up Seagate Backup Plus. Thank you!

Make sure that the hard drive is formatted in Mac OS Extendeded (Journaled)
The USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered, so it is often necessary to use a powered USB hub with a hard drive.....even if the hard drive has its own power supply
If you have the correct format for the drive and sufficient power, the drive should appear in AirPort Utility

I want to take files from my PC (using a Seagate external hard drive) then plug this Seagate External hard drive into my Mac Book Pro and move the files from the Seagate External Hard drive onto my Time Capsule. I do not want to put these files on my Mac. How do I do this? Where do I put these files on my Time Capsule? Will it affect the functioning of my Time Capsule?

Mixing files with data is not always great idea.
    See info here.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.
    There is more info here.

  • I cannot connect my external hard drives (1 WD My Passport and 1 LaCie Porsche Design). The drives were connected and worked perfect, the WD is used as a Time Capsule, the LaCie is formatted as exFAT and used for miscellaneous. They are both USB 3.0

I cannot connect my external hard drives any longer. I have one WD "My Passport" used as a Time Capsule and one LaCie Porsche Design used for all different kind of data, formatted in exFAT. They worked fine, connected direct or through an additional USB hub or also attached to a Dell monitor. The Lacie helds my iTunes Library and the iPhoto library.
After I moved the iTunes library to the external drive, from time to time the drive went into a never ending loop and I had to shut down the laptop (MacBook Air).
The last time starting again the drives were not recognized any longer. I tried to connect them to another MacBook, which didn't work.
Starting with Windows 7, the WD is also not recognized at all (perhaps because of time capsule format?) and the LaCie gives an error.
Could anybody tell me if there is a chance to get them alive again? When I connect them now, they start to heat up quite fast without anything else happening.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Just want to clarify, have you checked to make sure the cords are not damaged  (going from hard drive to computer and or any power source )?
You have also check to make sure that usb ports are working correctly?
If you have checked these things it may be that the external drives have failed.
I would google the error message from the LaCie drive before I do anything.
There are several ways that I know of,  one is to put the hard drive in the freezer for a while (make sure you wrap it air tight) if this works it is not a permenint fix. You might be able to transfer information to another source.
The other method is to plug the hard drive into a hard drive connector a product like this:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817707192
to do this you would have to remove the hard drive from its enclosure and still this is not a guarantee it will work.
The finally way I know is using a recovery service. This can be rather expensive, and  there are no guarantees

Sorry we are unclear as to the external hard drive and its connection to the TC..
For instance the light that blinks.. is that the TC or external hard disk or what.
Did you try just rebooting / restart the whole network in correct order.. modem.. router / TC.. external drive.. clients with 2min gap between each.
Are you actually running Snow Leopard as the profile states?
    How old is the TC?

  • Can I use 2 time capsules at once? 1 for back up and other as a hard drive?

I have a 1tb time capsule that I use for back up of my macbook pro. Everything works great. However, like most people, I have problems with my hard disc space and have to store my itunes and photos externally on a portable usb hard drive. This works fine for now. I keep it plugged in most of the time so that time machine can back it up when it is physically attached buy the usb cable. Obviously, when it isn't, it misses out being backed up.
My question is this. Would it be a bad idea to run two time capsules at the same time? I would like to keep my current time capsule as the back up and the new one purely as an external hard drive for storage. Would the old time capsule back up both the new time capsule and my macbook? The reason for my question is that my current portable is too small now and I currently move my laptop around so I am forever unplugging this usb drive which becomes a real pain and also, interupts it being backed up, etc.
I am looking for a wireless solution so that the external drive gets backed up along with my laptop no matter what. I used to have the usb portable drive plugged into the back of my time capsule but it wouldn't appear in the list in time machine preferences to be included. I am aware that I can buy wireless hard drives but would like to find out about an extra time capsule first.
Hopefully this is a simple question for someone. Any help gratefully appreciated, thanks.

You don't need another Time Capsule. Just buy a USB HDD and plug it into the TC USB port for additional storage.
Would the old time capsule back up both the new time capsule and my macbook?
No. Time Machine can back up TO a NAS (e.g TC), but cannot backup FROM a NAS (e.g. TC). An app such as CarbonCopyCloner (donateware) or SuperDuper! (purchase) may be able to, however.

  • I have a macbook pro and time capsule.  Computer hard drive is full and I would like to expand wirelessly.

I have read many forums that note an external hard drive can be connected to a time capsule, but it sound like that is just a way to expand the time capsule and not the computer hard drive.  The reason I would prefer a wireless option is to keep the laptop portable around the house (we have apple t.v. and home theater system that syncs wirelessly to itunes).  Wireless would allow use of any device even with the hard drive not being hard connected to the laptop.  Are there any options out there or am I just misunderstanding what happens when connecting a hard drive to the time capsule.
I am not concerned about speed, but would hope any solution would still allow back up to the time capsule.
    Thanks!!

You cannot expand the computer's hard drive by connecting an external drive to a Time Capsule. All that does is provide separate external storage. It will not expand the size of your computer's drive. To do that you have to buy a larger hard drive for the computer. Or you can buy an external drive then copy files you don't need to the external drive and erase them on your internal drive.
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • Wireless Router with USB + External Hard Drive = Time Capsule?

So I bought a TP-Link WR710N wireless router http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TL-WR710N which seems to support external storage in its USB port. I tried with various storage media and it kinda works. The bad thing is that it only sees NTFS drives. I tried an external hard drive formated for Windows and a USB stick, also formated for Windows and it discovered them. But when I tried my external hard drive which is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), which I was using for Time Machine, it couldn't see it. Neither the TP-Link software, nor the Time Machine software.
Is there any way I could use this router with this hard drive for wireless backing up with Time Machine NOT buying extra equipment (NAS, AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule) ?
    Thanks.

    No
Take it back and get a Time Capsule or keep it and buy a regular external drive and connect it to the Mac directly.

  • External hard drive + time capsule

I recently purchased an iMac and connected a LaCie ext. hard drive. Time Machine kicked in and started using this as a backup location. Since then I purchased Time Capsule for backups. The Lacie hard drive is still sitting on my desktop labelled Time Machine Backups. Can I just delete the old backup files and use it as an extra hard drive for digital photos etc.? I'm just a little confused as a long time pc user. I had expected that the extra hard drive would show up as "external hard drive" or "Lacie hard drive"

you can remove that external hard drive, if you have it currently connected to TC then use Airport Utility to go to disk/shared and disconnect it then remove the power then remove usb cable. If you want then connect to your Mac and partition it then add your software . You can connect it to the TC power on first then usb to TC then to device. Open your boot hard drive and on left side will be Tc. Select it and you'll see your external hard drive.

  • Seagate FreeAgent External Hard Drive & Time Machine

I have a 1 TB Seagate FreeAgent Go external hard drive that I use for Time Machine backups.  However, I get one or two backups on it and it suddenly becomes "Read only" and won't allow Time Machine to write to it.  My user name is listed as having read/write permissions.  I go into Disk Utility and Verfy the disk.  It comes back saying it needs to be repaird, so I click Repair Disk and then after several minutes of repairing it comes back with an error that the disk can't be repaired and that I should backup the contents and reformat.
I have reformatted it a couple times and each time this happens once I attempt to use it for Time Machine again.  At times it won't even mount.
Is this a bad drive and I should contact Seagate for replacement (it is only a couple months old) or is it something I'm doing/not doing?  Is it Lion (though it was kind of flaky even when I was running Snow Leopard)?
I have a MBP (early 2011) running Lion with 8 GB RAM, 1 TB internal HD.

Now I have that sinking feeling.
It is plugged directly into the MBP.  No power supply as it is a "portable" HD so it's powered from USB.
My sinking feeling is coming from the fact that since day one of owning this MBP (I got it in March 2011) the built in card reader has had problems.  When I put a card in, it mouts and reads fine, but if I reach around and move the MBP holding onto the bottom of the case near the card reader slots (the natural place to grab it to pick it up) I get a message that I've ejected the car improperly even though the card is still seated and hasn't move.  This leads me to believe that there is some kind of problem with the internal connections to the motherboard.  Now with this added symptom of the disk not mounting I'm more concerned about motherboard trouble.  Thankfully I have Apple Care.
But, the other thing is, when I connect the EHD and it doesn't mount/is not recognized by Time Machine, it does show up in Disk Utility as being there--indicating it connects fine as far as cabling etc--but it won't mount from Disk Utility, and I can't do disk repair.  The only thing I can do is reformat it and then it will work for a while before going back through the whole won't mount, have to format procedure again.  So I'm really stumped since there seems to be no clear indication if the problem is related to the card reader symptom or if it is a bad drive.

  • External hard drive, time machine and games

I have a seagate external I've been using with my g5 iMac as a time machine backup. kids got guitar hero and spore for xmas, and it is playable only on my wife's intel macbook, which simply lacks the hard drive space for them. what I would like to do is take my external and hook it up to the macbook and install those games on the external without wiping, reformatting or otherwise repartitioning that external. Is this possible? am I being silly? is it ok to just hook it up, install and go with it while leaving my time machine backup untouched? or is something going to have to be sacrificed to make it happen?
    thanks for the help all

TM will not be affected, other than the space dedicated to t.
As to the applications you want to install, if they allow you to install to anything other than the startup device, then install to the external.

  • Want to use Time Capsule as external hard drive / Time Capsule als externe Festplatte

Thanks! Yes, but it will be slow and expensive compared to just buying an external and plugging it in locally.

I was just wondering if I can use time capsule with my iphone for both back up and to access the hard drive on the capsule?

I don't think backup is supported but you may be able to access the TC's internal drive, from the iPhone, with an application like: NetPortal
Note: I haven't actually tried this app, so if someone else has and was successful in accessing the TC's drive they can certainly chime in.
Follow-up. Just downloaded and installed this app ... and I can now verify that it, indeed, can access both my TC's internal and externally attached USB HDD.

My guess would be it has created an entirely new backup of your drive when you upgraded to Mavericks.
