Time Capsule and the rest of the network

I have today installed my Time Capsule and I am not sure that I have configured everything in the optimum way. Everything works so far and it's backing up via Time Machine etc.
the thing is, in my office we have PC's and 1 Mac (mine). We have a network and a wireless access point. Everything is connected to a switch. So, I have connected a LAN cable in the WAN port of my Time Capsule (TC). The other end goes to the Switch. The DSL modem is connected to the same switch. My MacBook Pro (MBP) was previously connected to the WLAN router that is also connected to the same switch.
Now I am not sure how things are interacting. What I want is for my MBP to connect wirelessly with my PC that goes out on the internet over the DSL modem via the Switch.
When I click on my AirPort icon on the top of the screen it seems that I am still connected to the old WLAN.
I am also not sure if I should connect my LAN cable to the WAN port of the TC or one of the Ethernet ports.
Here's how I'd like it to work:
The DSL modem goes to the Switch. To the switch is connected a whole bunch of PC's, plus 1 wireless router and the TimeCapsule. The TC connects wirelessly with my MBP. I don't want the MBP to connect to the old wireless router any more.
I hope this is not too confusing. Btw, I never had to put in my key for the existing WLAN when I installed the TC. I am not sure how the TC connects to the internet.
Does anyone know how I can verify over MobileMe if the TC is connected to it?

Yes, you are right. There is a router between the switch and the modem. I forgot about that. The router also provides the WLAN here in the office.
After some investigation I found that when I select "create network" in the Time Capsule settings there is a second WLAN network created in parallel with the one we already have. The problem was that these 2 WLAN's had the same name. After changing the name of the WLAN from the TC I was able to distinguish them.
I couldn't find any information anywhere on how to use the WAN/LAN ports on the TC so I had to call Apple care to find out.
Another question if someone knows - how access the TC from the Internet? I have MobileMe and I have put in my username and password. Suppose that I go to a remote place in the world and find that I need a file on my TC. I connect my MacBook to the Internet and.......then? How access the TC?

  • Does an Airport Express require a wired connection to boost a Wi-Fi signal if I already have a wired Airport Time Capsule on the Network?

I want to boost the Wi-Fi signal around my house. I have a 3TB Airport Time Capsule connected to my Virgin Media modem via a WLAN connection but wonder if an Airport Express device can be used at a remote location purely wirelessly - apart from a power connection obviously?

Does AirPort Express require a wired connection.......if I already have a wired AirPort Time Capsule on the Network?
No, but you will have much better network performance if you do wire the AirPort Express.
The reason for this is that when you try to extend a network using wireless, you will typically lose about a half of the potential speed capability on the network.
There is no network speed loss when you wire the Express.
Here is what Apple's support document says about this:
In the case of a wirelessly extended network, throughput may be reduced to less than 60 percent of that of a single device. The general rule is to keep the Wi-Fi network as simple as possible. You can accomplish this by using the minimum number of Wi-Fi base stations required to service the physical network area and by using Ethernet wherever possible.
Extending the range of your Wi-Fi network by connecting Wi-Fi base stations together using Ethernet is always the best option, and will provide the best throughput

  • HT1178 Can I just use my airport express as the primary base station and the time capsule as the network client?

I bought a new airport time capsule 3tb to be used to save to file all my pictures. Can I use it as network client and the airport express as the
    Primary base station?

To my opinion this looks a bit like what I'm looking for.
At the moment I have an Imac that is wireless connected to a 2TB time capsule (TC1).
To this time capsule I have another 2TB time capsule (TC2) connected via a upt wire connection.
At the moment there is a backup made via time machine from the Imac to the time capsule TC1 (the second TC is not used)
I'm not so technical so I hope you understand the configuration.
What do I want to achieve :
copy all my data from the Imac to TC1 so that the information can be accessed by more users.
create an automatic backup from TC1 to TC2 (mirror or raid system) for security.
give access to some users on the network to access TC1 to read and write data.
TC2 only serves as backup from TC1 and no direct access is needed to this disk.
If there is a solution, thanks for explaining it in 'IT kindergarden style' so that I can understand and use the info.
    Many thanks in advance.

  • Using a Wify-to-LAN bridge to wire my time capsule into the network

    Hi,
I have a time capsule as the core of my small private network, and I'm moving into a building which has a centralized internet connection which only has WiFi support, not a chance to get a wired connection.
I do want my time capsule to connect to the network so I can connect all my other devices to it. I have searched and read a lot about it and the conlcusion is that the time capsule will not connect to the wifi network and act as a router/network hub at the same time. Additionally I have several devices that can only be connected through an ethernet phsyical connection, for which I want to use the time capsule.
I have thought of using a Wifi-to-lan bridge such as, for instance, this http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Universal-Ethernet-Adapter-WNCE2001/product-review s/B003KPBRRW. Do you think that will work? do you have any advice as to how to get my time capsule online?
    Thanks in advance!!

conlcusion is that the time capsule will not connect to the wifi network and act as a router/network hub at the same time.
    That would be correct.

I have no idea whether this will work.
However, if you configure an AirPort Express to "join" the Wi-Fi network, you can then connect an Ethernet cable from the AirPort Express to the Time Capsule and configure the Time Capsule as a normal router to set up your own private network for wired and wireless devices.
In effect, the Airport Express acts as a "modem" for your network in this type of setup, even though the terminology is not exactly correct.

  • How can a Time Capsule join the network offered by an Airport Express?

What I want is for any machine to still be able to access the internet.
and for any machine to still be able to access the time capsule.
So I want all machines connected to the same network. So isn't it possible
to make the Timecapsule available to all machines by joining the main network yet still be plugged into ethernet into my machine machine?
Computer is in living room hence need for TC to be closer and ethernet where as the internet connection is in the bedroom which is where the Airport Express is.
Currently no other machine except the one that's plugged into the Time Capsule's ethernet hub can see the Time Capsule wirelessly.

Trying to figure out what else is new on the Time Capsule announced today.

This is some info that was found in regards to the newly released Airport Extreme.  I would imagine that this would carry over to the new Time Capsule as well...
According to the FCC reports, there is a significant difference in the power output of the g/n radios at both 2.4 and 5ghz.

  • Time Capsule and the internet

I am having some problems with my internet speed and I used speedtest.net as recommended by some other users. My connectivity is @ 1.0 mb/s. I am wondering if this is something with my set up or with my ISP. I have verizon dsl. Any input would be appreciated, thanks!

    Welcome to the discussions, cwinicky!
Just a few quick questions and suggestions.
Do you know what your speed should be from your ISP? There are usually different packages available at different price points.
Can you connect your computer directly to your modem and check the speed that way? If you are checking ethernet connectivity, you could compare the speeds when hooked up directly and also through the Time Capsule to see if they are about the same. If they are, and you are not getting the speed that you should, contact your ISP and have them do a line test.
As a double check, you could also try another speed test. Something like http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ should do the trick.
    Post back on your results.

  • How can I get my time capsule and airport express (as a network extension) working properly together?

    Hi,
I bought a time capsule a while back and connected it to my modem, and it seems to be backing up my hard drives but I can't tell if I'm getting my wireless signal from my time capsule or from the modem itself, which used to before I bought the time capsule.
It's bugging me because I'm trying to get my airport express to work as an extension to my network, and airport utility half the time can't pick up the express. I heard that it will only work of the time capsule is working as the base station, and I'm not 100% sure this is the case.
Also, how far can the airport express be from my time capsule for it to be picked up? I tried resetting it which helped to start with, but when I was setting it up to extend my network it just told me that there was an error and to try again, which I did with the same result.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
    Cheers

Always do setups with ethernet.. setting up wireless via wireless is like cutting off the branch you are sitting on.
You do not need the TC in the network to do the setup.
Plug it by itself into the computer. Same with AE. But do each separately.
Give the TC a different wireless name.. like TC.. then you will know the TC wireless is separate and different to the main modem router. Simply allow it to be extended.
Plug it back into the main modem.
Now do the AE.. set it to extend the wireless of the TC.
When you do this check the signal level. The airport utility v5 has a full diagnostic of wireless client levels.. do not use v6 utility.. it is useless. The AE is placed somewhere in between the TC and the clients you want to connect.. it has to get decent signal itself to extend wireless. And there is no way we can tell you how far apart.. pick the half way point.. around about and suck and see. If it doesn't work move closer to the TC.
Count the walls the signal is going through.. about 15% signal loss for each one.. if angle is acute 20%.. floors are worse.. they might be 20-25%..

  • Time Capsule and Airport Express as separate network on route acting slow

Wonder if anyone has any thoughts on this...
I have a Time Capsule (current gen) with an Airport Express N (last gen) which I would like to connect to my current router and create a network that is separate from the router's own wireless network. Currently, I've set the TC to work in Bridge Mode (connected to the router - ethernet) and have connected the Airport Express to 'extend the network' - this is also in Bridge Mode as well. However, when I'm away from the TC and in the Airport Express's range, the connection is very slow. Is there something I'm not doing right with the 2 Apple products or is it something with the router? When I'm closer to the TC it works fine, it's just when I'm far away there seems to be an issue!
    Thanks in advance!

Wirelessly extending your network will improve your range, but decrease your bandwidth. You should create a roaming network via Ethernet if you can.

  • Time Capsule and Linksys router bridging two networks

I have set up a Time Capsule on a small business network and have made use of its dual wifi to set up guest access to the internet separate from our private network. It defaults to IP address 192.168.1.1 which conflicts with a computer that must be assigned that address so I have given it the IP address 192.168.0.1. I was hoping to bridge between the 192.168.0.x and 192.168.1.x networks using a Linksys BEFSR41 router. I have been able to get internet access from the 192.168.1.x network and port forward to our Windows e-mail server but can't get individual computers to see each other from one network to the other.
Can I set the Time Capsule IP to anything other than x.x.x.1 or alternately use it or another router to bridge two different networks?

Ethernet speed on your local network is determined by the slowest connected device which most likely will be the LinkSys router or your computer.

  • I am having problems reestablishing my Time Capsule.  I had to get a new internet modem and that seemed to screw up my Time Capsule.  The amber light keeps blinking and it's not being picked up when my Macbook scans or when my PC scans for the wireless ne

I can't find my Time Capsule on my networks anymore.  It's like it doesn't exist. We got hit by a storm and that might have caused our internet modem from ATT to fry.  I replaced the modem today but now my Time Capsule isnt working.  It's blinking amber.  The PC its connected to through the ATT modem isn't finding it as it scans and its not in utilities.  My MacBook isn't finding the time capsule either when it scans.  Whenever I hooked up all the wires to the time capsule and the modem, the internet stops working.  I've tried resetting the time capsule but it's still blinking.  I had all my computer equipment on a power surge protector. A pretty good one.  All my other equipment is fine.  The ATT modem was old, so I thought it might not have even been the lightening.  Nothing else in home was injured by storm.  I am freaking out and need help!!!  I can't use my MACbook to do my internet work and all my files were backed up on the time capsule.
Another problem. My Time Machine isn't backing up now either.  What is up with that?
I would be soooo grateful if someone can help me!  Thanks a million!

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

  • Time Capsule and extend network

    Hello,
my connection between Time Capsule and router is nearly working, but not perfect. Router an Time Capsule are connect via WLAN. Setup an possition of the router can not be changed. The router is far away from my laptop , so there is a very poor connection. Thats why I wanted to extend the network. Extending with WDS is not possible because of the router configuration. I have choosen " extend network" in the Time Capsule setup, picked the network from the list and entered the key ( 128 bit WEP ). Time Capsule tells me it could not extend the network, although I can access the Time Capsule and have a working internet connection. I am accessing the Time Casule via Router and all wireless, so the router an Time Capsule have to be connected, somehow. Can someone help me to get this setup really working? Or is it possible to access the router via Time Capsule? Because the Time Capsule is close to my laptop an I would have ab better connection like this.

This is not the actual problem. The connection is working, but very slow, because the router ( with dd-wrt software on it ) is too far away. So i wanted the Time Capsule to support the network. Connecting router and Time Capsule with WDS is not possible, because the setup of the router hast to be NAT. There is a another option in the Time Capsule setup to extend a network without WDS, which I wanted to use. The Time Capsule connect to this network via WLAN ( otherwise I could not access it ) but it does not extend the existing network. This is problem with Time Capsule an router. I wanted to know what I have to change in setting so that the Time Capsule extends the network. Is there somthing special with password or IP adress ( at the moment it is set to DHCP ), .... ?

  • Time capsule and Viera Cast

Hi - I've just purchased a Panasonic TC-P50G10 plasma TV that is able to be directly hooked up to the internet. I have a cable modem connected to Time Capsule and the TV is connected with via a LAN port from the Time Capsule to an ethernet port on the TV. When I check the network connection to the TV it says it successful and can obtain an IP address. However when I try to connect to the internet via the Viera Cast function of the TV it says "connection to server failed 006". I think that there is something about Time Capsule that is not allowing the TV to talk to the server. Any suggestions on how to proceed? I've tried rebooting the router and modem with no success.

    Welcome to the discussions!
Suggest that you perform an additional troubleshooting step as follows:
Temporarily disconnect the ethernet cable at the TV and plug it in to your laptop. Make sure that wireless is turned off on your laptop so that it will connect using ethernet.
Try to pull up several websites on your laptop. If you can, there is nothing in the TC blocking access to a website.
Reconnect the ethernet cable to the TV and power the TV down as well as the rest of your network. Then start the modem first for a few minutes alone, then the TC for a few minutes, then your TV and computers.
Any help? If not, you will need to check with Panasonic support to troubleshoot further as you can verify to them that you have a reliable internet connection at your end.

  • TIme capsule AND airport express as PRIMARY wireless?

I have a time capsule, extended the network to AirportExpress but it stinks! I still cannot get good service in that part of the house- and therefore, cannot use my apple TV very well.
SO, I have now hardwired the airport express to a new cable modem in the other end of the house and would like to use BOTH to get a strong signal.
Is this possible?  How can I set it up?  I basically want both devices to be 'primary'.
    thanks!

THanks!  That worked momentarily.  Turns out, Comcast does not let you have 2 IP addresses...so, it eventually recognizes the new modem as 'new' and then I can't set it up.
    bummer.
guess I need to crawl under the house and hard wire it from my original modem.
    thank yoU!
