Time Capsule and Tiger with wired G5 and wireless PowerBook

Do I want to create a new wireless network with TC as new base station or just add it to my existing network? Are there performance differences? I currently have the phone line connected to my wireless modem (2Wire812), then the modem connected to the internet WAN port on TC, G5 via ethernet to a ethernet port on TC. Everything is working and I have internet access from both the G5 and PowerBook, just wondering if this is the best wiring setup.
Second question ... I will be using Backup to back up files. Where do I find TC to back up to? I don't see it in the destinations list. And for that matter, where do I find TC in general in the finder?
Any help would be appreciated.

To connect to the TC, you'll also see it under shared, or go to network from the finder. You can open it up just like an external hard drive.
You can also simply plug in an ethernet cable to the back of the TC, and then to your PowerBook for direct link. Apple recommends this for the first backup, since it's faster, unless you are on just an 802.11n network (not g, or earlier). I just setup a dual-band network so my TC and MacBook can talk to each other at 802.11n.

I would suggest factory reset the TC if the above doesn't work and just try again.. the idevices can be more difficult to get running.

Can I use a Time Capsule on a hard wired iMac and get wireless to other devices?

I have a 6 year old iMac that does not have an airport extreme card. I have it connected to a cable modem ARRIS model TM502G which is also the VOIP for my telephone. My question is, if I buy a Time Capsule, will I be able to have wi-fi for other devices like an iPad or iPhone even though my computer is not wi-fi? If so, can you describe the order in which to hook up the Time Capsule to the existing modem and computer. Thanks so much.

That is not the correct approach.. but you can do what you want.
Plug the TC into the cable modem.. Turn both off and restart the modem and the TC.. if there is a battery backup in the modem you may need to disconnect the coax cable in the back of the unit or drop the battery out.
Plug ethernet from the old mac into the TC.. use the wifi for the other devices.
Trying to route through the mac will be a pain.
A TC is not necessary for this.. if you don't want a backup disk.. you can use AEBS or any wireless router.

A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
Machine is not backing up my files
on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question

If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it.

Here is how to do this:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup
Click the Disks icon at the top of the AirPort Utility window
Click the Disks tab below the icons
Click Erase
The "Quick Erase" option will only take a moment or two
Now you can backup your MacBook Pro. If you connect an Ethernet cable from the MBP to one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC, the first backup will go 3-5 times faster than wireless.
Once you have the first backup done, you can use wireless for subsequent backups since they will only take a few minutes

Due to the kind of plug used the US power cord is rated at the 125v value.. and legally we cannot advise you to use on higher voltages.. although I have never had issues in Australia.. 240v.
But adapters from your Euro power plug to US are generally ugly .. unsightly things.. and often sit high above the socket and are none too stable.. I agree with Bob.. just go out and buy a standard figure 8 power cord.. check with Apple in Italy for a white one.. if you are going to have it on show.. black are far more common. Or even check ebay for a standard power Apple power cord as a number of items they sell use the figure8 socket.

Your pro doesn't matter.. I presume it is happily working.
Your imac setup has got messed up because you changed from a local (my book being USB type I presume) to network drive. Did you do a clean install of Lion?
Did you use the backup from the Pro on the imac? Otherwise I don't see how the Pro shows up in use previous disk. Where is Pondini when you need him??
You cannot download Time Machine as an App and replace the current version. It is built into the OS.. the only way to do it is a clean install. Unfortunately that might be the only way around the issue.
There is a number of issues that Pondini has covered in the setup issues of troubleshooting.

If it was me, I would store all the info you need.. not using TM but using a straight copy of files.
Then clean install Lion. I doubt any of these issues would exist if you had not installed Lion over existing setup or used a different backup.

Firstly, try a factory reset. This can often iron out problems like this.
Also, what generation is your TC? What version of AirPort Utility are you using?

Only if the TV is a media player.. the TC is dumb as a board router with a hard disk.. there is no DLNA which I suspect the TV requires.. you can get a player like the WDLive and it will play movie files from the TC to the TV.. remember the TC is nothing but a file store.. no servers .. no nothing.

You can do that (see below), but how are you going to back them up? If your only copies are on the TC, when (not if) it fails, you risk losing your only copy of the data.

No, but there are some workarounds, including making a fixed-size disk image on it to "reserve" some space. See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.
But you still won't have backups of the stuff you put there.
You don't say what kind of Mac you have. If it's a desktop model, just keep the external HD connected to it, and let Time Machine back it up along with your internal HD.
However, it sounds like you may have a laptop, where that's not going to be convenient. In that case, your best bet might be to copy the external HD to a disk image on the TC as above, then keep the HD in a safe place.
To finish, when i enter the TC and go through the Time line how can I get a file from there and move it back to Mac hd.

You need to use the airport utility on a computer.
If you use v6 utility it is fairly easy and straight forward.
The trick is to place the old TC in the same room as the new one.
Do a full factory reset and then you can just go through the utility to extend wireless network.

If you have issues just ask.
Then you can place the old TC about half way between the new TC and the clients would want to connect.. the half way point is not distance but wireless signal levels.
You can pick that up by using the wireless diagnostics in a mac laptop and walking around to pick up the signals.
This is for extend wireless.. if you want roaming network it is entirely different. That means they are plugged together with ethernet.
Tell us if you mean roaming not wireless extend.

Your files are unaffected by a reset.. no reset via the reset button on the TC harms, deletes or does anything to your files.
The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on.. all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel.. add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Here is how to do a fully manual setup for TC which is sometimes necessary with Mavericks in particular.

You can't open your backups directly with apps.
But you can see some types of files in your backups. If you're still on Snow Leopard (or Lion with iPhoto '09 or earlier), see the gray box at the end of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #15.
If you're on Lion with iPhoto '11, you can use the Finder to see the iPhoto library, per the beginning of that same link. All you can see there is the library and size.
