Time capsule and time machine - permanently deleting files to make space

This may have an obvious answer - I recently bough TC and set up TM. Since TM backsups everything, what do I do if I want to delete a file forever, and never want it to be backed up in TM and take up space in TC? thanks

How are you trying to access these "old" files? That is are you trying to access them through Time Machine or directly from the Time Capsule using the Finder?

  • Time Capsule and time machine with third party router

    Hi,
This is the first time I use this site.
I have over three years old Mackbook.
    APP has expired.
Now I want to know how to set up time capsule in a new environment.
I moved from Australian and Singapore.
I was using Time Capsule and Airport Extreme in Australia.
    I have moved to Singapore.
I am using router provided by Singtell(Singapore Telecommunication). I do not have an Airport Extreme anymore. My housemate and I are using wireless internet-sharing. Needless to say that internet provider is SingTell.
Now I would like to know how to use time capsule and time machine with the network created with a router provided by SingTell.
    What I did so far is;
Connected the time capsule to the power point.
Orange lamp lit and flashed for a few second and stop. Orange lamp stayed on.
Apple Utility does not recognise Time Capsule.
I prefer to use it wirelessly.
There are only two USB cable ports installed.
One is used to synchronize iPhone.
Other is used for a printer.
but if it is not possible, wired would be OK.

I hope that someone able to give me an answer for this.

In this case the apple support people reveal a truly poor understanding.
You must bridge something.. you either bridge the TC.. which 90% of people do.. or you bridge the dsl router.. which some people do manage to do.. You will have to look that up for your modem and check with verizon if they support pppoe authentication.
IMHO just bridge the TC as you were told not to do.. as they are simply wrong about that.
If you already tried this and it didn't work.. try again.. it is the correct approach.
You have no choice. But this time let me suggest you do it using the 5.6 airport utility.. as the apple toyland v6 airport utility is likely half your trouble.
So here is how to get the utility into your computer.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
For screen shots see this post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4668746?tstart=0
Then open the manual setup on the 5.6 utility.. go to internet tab. Connection sharing.. off bridged mode.
    Select this and update..
Then all your IP addresses will be wrong.. I suspect this is where things are going wrong.. and messing you up.
Once the TC is bridged.. turn off everything and restart.. in correct order.. modem.. TC.. client computers etc. 2min gap between each.

  • Time capsule and Time Machine just says "preparing"

I just bought Time Capsule and ran my first Time Machine backup.
It took three trys before it completed a backup.
Now when it goes to back up it either says "preparing" for a very long time. Or it says it can't find the back up drive.
Can anyone advise a fix for me?

this sounds hopeful. How do I delete the sparsebundle file?
I wouldn't do that; it's a better idea to securely erase the TC via the Manual Configuration in Airport Utility.
In fact, I'm about to do that now; my backups from my MBP + another MB here were fine. After missing 3-4 days of backing up, I manually initiated one & it's just sitting on Preparing To Backup for over 20 minutes (on my third attempt).
I'm gonna let it rip through a secure erase tonight (a 1 TB Time Capsule (TC) can take a WHILE to secure erase. Remember; when you secure erase, it automatically adds necessary hidden files in the TC root) & backup my 170GB worth of junk (lol) tomorow night.
I just pray I don't loose my notebook between then

  • 2TB Time Capsule and Time Machine on Snow Leopard 10.6.1 slooooooow

I have a 2TB Time Capsule on a 100Mps LAN that is shared by my Mac Pro and an iMac G5. No USB devices are connected to the Time Capsule. The Time Capsule and both computers are connected to the LAN through a LinkSys 8-port Cable/Router/DHCP.
While in Time Machine (about 30 backup folders) looking for a file to restore, it takes 2-5 minutes for Time Machine to change between backups. The time line on the right responds extremely slowly.
Whether or not the iMac is backing up has no effect.
    Is this normal?

  • Time Capsule And Snow Leopard - Problems Accessing Files / Folders

    Hi all,
I am having a problem accessing the time capsule drive and my networked Macs drop boxes etc from the finder. They were working fine, possibly before 10.6.1 and are very intermittent at the moment. If I goto 'go' then 'network', it shows all connected devices fine however accessing them seems to be sketchy. For example, from my Mac Pro upstairs, I can see the time capsule and macbook fine, I can connect to them fine, even screen share with no problems, however when I try to access the drop box, or anything at folder level, I get a spinning type icon in the lower right of the finder by the new zoom bar that just keeps spinning and nothing happens. I have this problem accessing the 'data' folder on my time capsule from both the Mac Pro and the MacBook unless I access it from the drive it mounts on the desktop, I get straight in that way! It's quite infuriating really. Anyone else having this problem? Just to update, I have both Macs connected to the time capsule for time machine and backups are working fine. It would seem that you do eventually get into the folder you try to access, but takes forever for some reason.
    Cheers.

I couldn't access files on a drive attached to my TC recently, and I fixed the problem by repairing permissions on my main hard drive (the one in my computer.) This option is in Disk Utility. Not sure if that will work for you but it's worth a shot, it doesn't hurt anything! A lot of people recommend repairing permissions every time you update your operating system.

Launch AirPort Utility and do a "Manual Setup". Select the "Disks" pane and click on the "File Sharing" view. That's where you declare how that disk will be accessed.
Also I want to extend my network using an Airport Express but the Time Capsule and the Express will not come up on Airport Utilities at the same time. Should they work together?
I've had similar trouble with that in the past. It's required multiple resets and sometimes selecting the Express from the AirPort menu. One thing I've never tried that might help you would be to connect to the Express via Ethernet during the configuration process.
Be sure to set the Time Capsule to "Allow this network to be extended" and be sure to use the identical settings for network name, security type, and password on both units.

  • Time Capsule and Time Machine through Ethernete

Hello I hope that someone can help me in this problem that I'm having with the configuration of my Time Capsule.
    Topology:
    TC --- (WAN) --- Router --- AP --- MBP
    |
    +--- (DSL) --- INTERNET
    where;
    TC - Time Capsule
WAN - WAN interface on the Time Capsule
    AP - Access Point
    MBP - Macbook Pro
    The ip addresses are:
    TC - 192.168.2.2
Router connected to the TC - 192.168.2.1
Router connected to the AP - 192.168.1.1
    MBP - 192.168.1.23
    DSL - public ip address
This is how I connected the TC and this is how is connected my network in my home/office...
I configured the Time Capsule to be my backup device through the internet (mobile me) and with my local wireless network.
    The problem:
I don't know why I can't get connected to the TC using the Time Machine application, I can reach it through ping or through the configuration assistance of the AirPort Utility...
If I want to configure it this is what I do:
    * Open AirPort Utility
    * Go to File - Configure Other and then type the ip address 192.168.2.2 and the password that I configured.
With these steps I'm able to get the information of the TC.
BTW the TC is in green and the AirPort in the TC is off...
The problem is that every time that I open the Time Machine app it asks me about "Select Backup Disk" so I click over there, then I click over "Set Up Time Capsule" and opens AirPort utility so if I try to get the TC I can't reach it, it stuck in RESCAN!!!
I have no idea what to do or how to set up or connect the devices.
Thanks a lot and I hope that someone can help me!!!

    Tesserax,
No problem with the questions... I'm more than glad that you help me with this problem...
Regarding what you asked let me answer:
o With the TC connected directly to the Cisco router by Ethernet, do you have the TC reconfigured as a bridge? (ref: AirPort Utility > Select the TC > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode))
    - Yes... It's already configured as Bridge mode in the internet connection...
o Do you have the TC configured with a static Private IP address provided by the Cisco's DHCP Server service? ... and is that static IP address the 192.168.2.2 you mentioned?
    - Yes. I already configured the static IP address as 192.168.2.2
If you have more questions please let me know, I want you to have my complete picture of the diagram
Let me share you this next link: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5594932/TimeCapsuleProblem.doc
Also let me share you this diagram: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5594932/Diagrama%20LAN%20INTERNET.pdf
Is a dropbox document that I uploaded so you can see the screenshots in the Time Capsule. Hope this can help better!!!
    Thanks again!!!

  • Reinstall my harddrive from Time Capsule and Time Machine but it do not finish. It tries to reinstall documents but it do not go further than aprox 3% of the data. What can/should I do?

I have tried to reinstall my harddrive after harddrive switch from Apple. Wien I try to install the harddrive fr.o.m. My Time Capsule thru Time Machine it starten god but suddenly it stoped and aprox. 3% of documents are installed. Now nothing happens. Wahl can/should I do?

The backup could be corrupted .. try using the disk utility to verify and to fix it.
    See A5 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You can also try restoring the whole backup to an external drive.
Pondini has a number of methods listed here.
    Q14-17 http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
Do not restore by wireless connection.. isolate the TC and use ethernet only.

I can't back up and I can't access to my old backups via Time Machine.
What can I do to solve this problem. Here in Argentina, nobody at Apple knows what to do with this problem.

  • Time capsule and time machine keep disconnecting

My Time Machine keeps losing connection to my Time Capsule and dropping it's wireless internet connection. The internet comes back, but when I click on the Time Machine settings and open Airport Utility, it shows the internet connection as Green, but it never finds the Time Capsule.
    A. How do I get it to reconnect.
    B. What is causing it to disconnect?
I have an iMac (Intel) with OS 10.7.5. I have Time Machine setup to backup my iMac wirelessly to a Time Capsule. I also have a cable modem providing wireless access. The Time Capsule is setup in Bridge Mode.
    Thanks in advance!
    John

Hi John, let's see if we can stop the disconnect.
Though all of these steps may or may not be needed, I'm including them all.
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    10.4 instructions...
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
If that doesn't work try changing channels on your Router.

  • Time Capsule and Time machine hangs my mac

I read through the first 20 pages to see if anybody else was having similar issues but then gave up so apologies if this is repeated.
OK here goes. I bought a TC 1 TB plugged it in, worked no problem and did so for ages. None of the problems mentioned by other people.
Recently I had a backup fail. At the time I had installed time machine editor some time previously and set it to back up once a day which it had been doing with no issues for weeks.
Reading the help topics I re-selected the TC in TM and off it went preparing - backup failed. Restarted both Mac and TC and tried again. This time it started the backup got to about 70GB and hung my mac - nothing worked had to hold the power button on the mac to get it to restart.
Plugged my mac directly into the TC to get a GB connection. Deleted the TC drive and reselected it. 70 (ish) GB failed and hung my machine. Checked the logs found the same file failing, excluded it from backups, deleted the drive started again - 70 ish GB failed again hung machine.
Rand apple support, was asked to do a few things. First hard reset the TC, second check permissions and repair on the mac hard drive. Third re-index the mac HD - then delete the TC drive and start again. 70 GB mac hung - warning server disconnect - backup failed.
Restarted TC and Mac, deleted TC drive, start again, 70 GB fail.
Now, the only thing that is going through my mind and im reaching here a bit is that about the time I started having problems was the same time I bought the new expansion to a game - World of Warcraft. I do play this daily and have been during the backups, I have been keeping an eye on the backups while playing and although they do appear to stop incrementing the machine is fine until I try to exit WoW. When I do the machine hangs (only does this when TM is running).
I am running out of ideas now, seem to have tried everything backups constantly failing at around the 70GB mark no more files needing to be excluded, the errors seem to be losing connection to TC server.

I ended up with a few days of talking to Apple support about this and here is how it went and this is what we tried.
Managed to get the TM to backup a full backup. The next backup failed and after that could not mount the bundle.
Deleted the drive started again, hung around 80% - same problem.
Deleted and renamed the drive - this seemed to work and full backup completed. Next backup failed.
Removed all of the 'offending' items from backup - i.e. pretty much anything that had ever been mentioned in a support forum, e.g. parallels drives, Aperture loads of stuff - no difference.
Complete reset on old time capsule - held reset button for 20 seconds while plugging power in. Deleted and renamed the old drive. Re-installed the firmware.
I excluded almost everything on the mac hard drive to make for a quick backup. It backed up fine but failed on next backup at which point the sparse bundle could no longer be mounted.
Apple still thought the problem was not the TC but something it was trying to backup.
Re-installed OSX. Removed everything from backup - i.e. excluded everything so it had nothing to backup. Then gave it 1 file to backup.
Backed up fine then failed at next backup.
Apple sent me a new replacement TC - removed everything (except parallels drive) from exclusions - plugged it in selected it as destination has been working fine ever since.
Now, Apple sent me the replacement with a not saying do not return old faulty equipment. So I got a new shiny replacement and my problem is solved.... however I am a curious sort and cannot figure out what is wrong with the old one. Its network is fine, I can use the drive as an external drive no problem (i.e. plug it in and mount the drive by connecting to server) but TM fails if I try to use it for TM backups.
The machine is a NAS, what I am trying to figure out is where is the NAS software held? is this part of the build of the harddrive or part of the firmware?
The reason I ask is, you cannot reformat a TC, only delete the network drive you create with various setting for secure delete. BUT, if you look at a TC drive it is NOT the full size of the drive within the TC. Also, there are at least 3 partitions on the drive, So I assume that the other 2 are the NAS side of things. My opinion is that one or both of the NAS partitions is corrupt, but we have no method of rebuilding these and no method of reformatting the entire disk.
I have read that you can remove the TC drive and reformat it using disk utility, but what happens when you put it back in? is it still a TC? does it still have the TC NAS functionality?
What I think is missing here is something in Airport utility that allows you to rebuild a TC from scratch. I assume the reason it isnt there is to ensure that people can't build their own TC's and have to buy Apple's, but surely Apple could build this into Airport utility so that it recognises a genuine TC and allows a re-build and/or re-format?
I am going to continue messing with the old one, to see if it can be fixed, if not it will either become the most expensive airport extreme I won or at least a Network attached disk for my PC's.

  • Time Capsule and Time Machine want backup, stops after 2-30GB

Bought 2 x 2GB Time Capsule yesterday to have for backup purpose. I have only used one of them yet (30 day return policy). I have an iMac with OSX 10.6.6 connected by LAN: I first tried to connect the TC to my ZyXEL P2602HWT, then directly to the iMac without any other network, and now i have set up ZyXEL as a bridge router and run TC with PPOE. All three connections provide the same miserable results. First backup starts quite normal and can backup everything from 2-30GB before Time Machine comes with a fault message "Time Machine Error This can be a transient problem. Try again later. If the problem persists, repair the backup disk using diskutility. I have tried everything rebooted TC, TC deleted, removed almost all the folders in the Time Machine except for documents, pictures and music folders but same result. Is there something wrong with my TC?

I'm wondering why you're using a Time Capsule for backups of an iMac; an external HD would be much faster and more reliable.
"Time Machine Error This can be a transient problem. Try again later. If the problem persists, repair the backup disk using diskutility.
It sounds like there's a problem with a file on your system; see #C3 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

  • I have a MacBook Pro 13" and am using Airport Time Capsule and iCloud. I delete my cookies all the time, but every so often the cookies reappear after rebooting. It is the exact same amount of cookies each time, so I wonder why they're being reloaded?

I have a MacBook Pro 13" (2010) running OS X 10.9.2   and have Airport Time Capsule. I routinely delete my cookies and often (every couple days or so) when I reboot, a number of cookies reappear in my Safari settings. The number of cookies that reappear is exactly the same when it does it (351 cookies) so I'm wondering if it is related to my Airport Time Capsule or possibly iCloud? How do the cookies get back into my MacBook Pro? Or.... Have they ever actually left? Befoer I reboot, I delete them and sometimes they stay gone for 24hrs or more, but then reappear the next time I reboot. Can someone tell me if there is a way to clear the cookies so they won't come back?

Blocking all cookies in Safari does not work. Deleted cookies will not stay deleted. There are numerous threads on this going back years, both in these forums and elsewhere. Many claim to have submitted the issue to Apple, but I have never seen anyone post a reply.
I have seen many suggested fixes that involve finding the cookies file, some including Terminal manipulations, and none seems to work universally. I can find noplace where Apple addresses this officially with an actual Apple-approved explanation or how-to.
Bottom line, your browser's security features should do what they claim: delete cookies. When they come back without ever even visiting another page, this is clearly not working in the way a reasonable user would expect.
Bottom line, Safari does not protect users' privacy in the way it pretends to and, after so many years of this issue, it appears that Apple wants it this way.
Having spent way too much time on this, I realize the choice is between Safari which is pretty well optimized; Firefox which is a lot pokier, at least for me; and Chrome, which I assume funnels personal information directly to Google.

  • Time Capsule and iTunes - Can't Locate Files

Ok, so I have a relatively new Macbook Pro 15" and an equally-new Time Capsule. I put all of my 4,500 songs onto the Time Capsule because I only listen to music and home and also because I wanted to save space on my hard drive. While this set up has worked up until now, I am beginning to experience some problems. Right now iTunes says that it cannot locate the file for any of my songs unless I manually show it where those files are on my Time Capsule. I am not worries about losing the files because they appear to be unaltered, however I wanted to know if there was a way to have iTunes automatically search through my music folder and fix the problem. I know there is a way to download all the music from my hard drive to my computer and then back to the hard drive to fix the problem, but I would really like to avoid having to dump all those files onto my pristine hard drive. Any suggestions? And I am sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, I just could not locate a thread with this EXACT problem. Thanks.

Isn't there a better way around this??? Here's what I want: I want to store all of my itunes library on my Time Capsule to save space on my HD. I understand that I won't be able to access the library out of my home, but that's fine. The problem is -
    1) When I am at home, I have to manually mount the Time Capsule by clicking on the folder, waiting for it to connect, and then opening iTunes (even if my computer is already backing up files to the Time Capsule). It's a real pain and adds unnecessary steps.
    2) When I am not at home and away from my Time Capsule, I can't even open iTunes at all without it prompting me to locate the library or create a new one. Even if I don't want to listen to my songs, I'd like to be able to open iTunes to use the radio, surf the store, etc.
What is the best solution? It seems ridiculous that a wireless HD doesn't connect automatically, and that you can't open iTunes without a library. Is there a workaround? Can I keep the library database file on my HD but have the actual files (songs, movies, etc.) be on the Time Capsule? Please advise.
    Thanks.
