Time Capsule and Time Machine USB storage

Will hard drives connected to the USB port on the time capsule be able to be used for Time Machine backup? Looking through all the literature put out today, it doesn't specifically say so. It does say you can connect a USB hard drive for network storage but it doesn't say you can use that for expanded Time Machine storage.

Disk sharing on an AEBSn seems to work fine on a local network, but my experience is that it often will not work correctly for PCs connecting from the Internet.
It works for me (I have static WAN IP addresses) from both Macs and PCs connecting from the Internet, but it doesn't work for remote PC connections for several clients who have dynamically assigned IP addresses, even though the IP addresses are handled by a dynamic DNS host.

  • Can I connect an external HD on the time capsule and use it as storage space ?

    Hello,
I am thinking about purchasing a time capsule for backing up my data, but I also need storage space for photos and videos, can I connect an external hard drive to the time capsule and use it as storage ? If so, is there any risk of the time machine use the external hd space for backup as well and eat up all the storage ?

can I connect an external hard drive to the time capsule and use it as storage ?
Yes....for storage, as in backup files.  But, not recommended for "working" image or media libraries.

No, unless you intend to also use the same drive for Time Machine backups.

  • Can a time machine usb drive backup the data from an external usb drive connected to and airport extreme*

can a time machine usb drive conected to my mac book backup the data from an external usb drive connected to and airport extreme ?

Hi Adam, if you think yoiur HD may be failing you could do a TM restore onto the new disk. I would rather see you do a clone either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.Of your internal drive. That way you have a bootable backup in case it does fail.
btw - what are the symptoms of your failing drive?

  • Can i use the time machine as storage?

how can i use my time machine as storage?

I assume you mean Time Capsule.. that is the physical box that is combined router and hard disk.
Yes, you can, but it is not designed for storage.. it is not a NAS.. it has no easy incremental backups of files stored on it.. and only has a slow usb backup of the whole drive which is painful. The TC is a backup device. Use as storage knowing one day it will die and what then happens to your files???

  • How to revert a Time Machine backup storage?

I recently just used the WD Elements SE external storage device as my Time Machine backup. But when I did, I cannot get the WD to work on my Windows anymore. And can anyone show me how to revert a Time Machine backup storage back just to its default state so i use it on the Windows? It's a priority.
And if you can somehow show me how to get a Time Machine backup storage to work for the Windows as well then that would be even better.
    Thank you.

Sorry, you can't get a TM backup to work with Windows.
To use the HD as storage for both Mac and Windows, you'll need to reformat the disc as FAT32, or FAT64 if both systems support it.
    To reformat from Disk Utility on the Mac;
    Turn off Time Machine.
In DU, highlight the WD drive in the sidebar (the actual drive, with the makers name and size)
    Select the partition tab
Set the partition sceme to 1 partition
Under the options button, set the partition map to Master Boot Record (MBR)
Set the file system to MS-DOS and name the new volume.
    Click 'apply'
The clean volume will now appear below the drive in the sidebar.
Be aware that there is a limit to file sizes on FAT32 volumes of a little over 4GB.

  • Connecting Time Machine USb drive to Time Capsule and continuing backups?

I've been backing up my iMac to an external HDD while I waited to get my TC replaced (blew the PSU about a month ago and I've been lazy about getting it fixed). Now that my replacement 500Gb TC has arrived, I'd like to continue with the current TM backup I have. Can I simply unplug the USb drive from the iMac and plug it into the USB port on the back of the TC? I know I can backup to the drive from scratch, but I want to be able to continue using the backup I already have. I know Time Machine over wired/wireless uses a sparsebundle instead and that a USb doesn't, so will there be an issue?
(And the reason I want to move the external in the first place is to free up some space on my desk)

You can probably do that, if there's enough room on the disk for two copies of your backups, or if you have a second disk you can use, but it's a bit tricky and will take a long time.
See #18 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If your current backups are case-ignorant, however, the procedure there won't work "as is". You'll have to either change the sparse bundle that Time Machine makes, or use a special Terminal command to copy your backups into the default sparse bundle.
So your best bet is probably to simply erase the drive and let TM start fresh. And if your USB drive doesn't have it's own power supply, you'll probably want to use a powered hub.

  • Used Time Machine (USB) to Airport Extreme

    Hi,
Last year, I set up a 1TB external hard-drive as my Time Machine... It all worked perfectly. Currently it has over 600GB worth of stuff on it. My macbook has a hard-drive of 320gb.
I recently bought a used Airport Extreme (A1354) and want to connect my existing 'Time Machined' external hard-drive but it won't allow me to...? It is recognised- I just cant seem to back up or access files at all.
In an article I read it said that the pathway when connected directly to my macbook via USB is different to a pathway when connected via wireless connection.
    So my questions are:
    • Can I rename the pathway?
    • Or do I need to buy a new external harddrive and start afresh?• If I do have to start a fresh, is there a way to merge my old time machine files to the new time machine files - - - so I can keep both my 'time Machines" in the one place (Instead of having one lot of time machine from August 2011 to August 2012 and  another time machine from September 2012 to x date)
I can't even restore all my time machined files to my macbook- then reformat my External Hard drive, because I only have 320 GB
I hope I am making sense. I am not too high tech so . . .  my apologies =)
P.S. Sorry if this has already been answered-- I have read countless articles and can't seem to find an answer.

    Hi,
Yeah I got an answer to connecting my existing time machine to my airport extreme
The airport extreme will not let you connect any 'time machine' - new or existant - as it acts as a drag and drop type of saving.... so i.e. if I want to save a file - i will need to go to shared>airport extreme and then drag and drop my file there to save it- it will not do it automatically like time machine. This is so if you wanted the automatic wireless backup, you would have to go out and buy a time capsule.
    hope that makes sense.

  • Time Machine/ExHD/Storage - Help!

I have two external 1tb hard drives and 500gb on my macbook hard drive. The storage on my macbook was mainly used up by "other." On my first ext HD i had nearly 600gb's of "other" using up all my space. All of my files only use about 350gb on that disc. While attempting to remove that wasted space i used time machine with that external hard. I still dont really understand time machine even after reading about it. I wanted to be able to back up that hard drive and then erase all of the files on it with disk utility. and then put the files back on it hopefully not having the "other" storage still. Erasing the disc does get rid of the "other" data.. but how can i move all of my files and then erase the disc and put the files back on the external hard drive. Looking for a solution that doesnt make me wait hours moving 350gb's worth of files. Thanks.

here is everything very simple abou Time Machine
    http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
    here is about OTHER
See here for answer about the OTHER which is taking up space:
    http://pondini.org/TM/30.html
    and here:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html
See Kappys excellent note on the rest of “other” files taking up your space:
What is "Other" and What Can I Do About It?
Get rid of  (offload it or trash it) some of the useless files above in OTHER, and make a clean time machine backup,  simplify things.

  • Kernel Panic when attaching time machine USB external drive

Really hope someone can help me with this.
I've got a late 2011 Macbook Pro, and was running Time Machine on a 500GB GDrive USB external drive. Was working fine when I last attached it on Feb 29. The Time Machine backup was encrypted.
When I tried to use it yesterday, as I have lost all my iTunes data on another drive, I got a Kernel Panic when I entered the password for the drive.
I managed to de-encrypt the drive using Disk Utility, but now I get a Kernel Panic everytime I plug the **** drive in.
I really need this backup data, would appreciate any help people can offer. Am running Lion 7.3, and the same error occurs on a Lion iMac that I have tried the drive on.

  • External HDD - OS X 10.7 / Time Machine / File Storage

Hi there, I'm planning on buying an external HDD and have a few questions before I 'proceed to checkout'.
Firstly, the manufacturer's description on the site that I'm buying from specifies that the hard drive works with Mac OS X 10.4-10.6. As I plan to use the hard drive to back up my MBP before upgrading to OS X 10.7/Lion I'm wondering if after the upgrade, the hard drive will still be usuable.
Also, after upgrading, I hope to use the hard drive with the Time Machine function of OS X. Is it possible to use both Time Machine and to separately store files such as movies or music on the one hard drive?
The hard drive that I've chosen: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Iomega-eGo-Desktop-Hard-Drive/dp/B003MC3JNS/ref=sr_1_1?s =computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1312208384&sr=1-1 (Iomega eGo Desktop Hard Drive (Mac Edition,2TB))
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me, appreciate it.

Nonetheless, I would not have expected there to be any issue anyway. It is exceeding rare that ANY drive that works with a recent iteration of OS X would have a problem with Lion.
I have 4 external hard drives. 1 Time Capsule I use with Time Machine and 3 WD drives: a My Book World Edition, a My Passport, and a My Passport Essential SE. Since upgrading to Lion, the only one that works is Time Capsule. WD hasn't released any firmware updates for the others yet.
I'm feeling a little insecure, since I don't really have a back up any longer, only a copy.
My advice is to contact the company before you buy. I suspect that many manufacturers have not updated their system compatibilities yet, but I would contact before I buy just to make sure.

  • My external Time Machine USB hard disk doesn't work suddenly

I can't see the device in Finder suddenly. The parition is dimmed in Disk Utility. Tried to use Disk Utility to repair but got the below message.
    Verify and Repair volume “HD-LBU2”
    Checking storage system
Unable to examine /dev/disk3: Resource busy
Error: Storage system verify or repair failed.
Any idea on how to fix it? I am using Lion.
    Thanks!

Have you had the opportunity to look over the Time Machine Troubleshooting link. Because TM is part of OS X you will find support in the version of OS X which is Lion in your case. However based on the error message you are getting it's possible the TM drive has failed.
One thing some people have had luck with is doing a simple SMC reset but this is usually for drives that don't show up at all.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
One question is, what kind of external HD are you using? The reason I ask is External WD drives tend to have a lot of problems and IMHO should be avoided.

  • Time Machine USB Backup Drive fails to eject

Time Machine is freezing my iMac at logoff/shutdown. I noticed that in the log files for Time Machine backups that other folks posted that the the Time Machine target volume ejected and unmounted at the end of the backup. That isn't happening. I can turn Time Machine off and logoff, but if I leave it running everything freezes. Any ideas on how why Time Machine isn't ejecting the disk? I used the same disk with Snow Leopard (just upgraded lately) without issue. I've reformatted and re-set up the target volume with Lion so some kind of SL thing shouldn't be the issure.

Yes, it is a portable drive. I've tried other cables and another Mac (on campus), but nothin' doin'. I bought it locally but I'd have to find the receipt. I installed a Scorpio Black 320GB HD on Saturday. Would that have anything to do with it?
It shouldn't, but the timing makes me wonder if it's not a coincidence.
Some things can go wrong with TM when you add/replace an internal, but if your Mac doesn't even see it, we can't begin to diagnose, much less fix it.
Still, if another Mac doesn't even see it, it's pretty likely dead. Might be fixable, but you need to take it back.

  • I am on my 2nd time capsule and cannot get usb port to work

I have replaced my old Airport Extreme with an  with a 2TB Time Capsule. Everything worked except the USB port. I worked with Apple Tech Support and we determined the USB Port wasn't working so I took the 2TB Capsule back and they were out of 2TB models, so I came home with a 3TB Time Capsule. Everything works except the USB Port.  I have tried printers, USB hard drives, Flash Drives, etc. to no avail. What am I missing? I know I didn't get two Time Capsules with defective USB ports.

The port is under powered.. this is often the experience people have.. you need to use a powered hub to get things to work. Why they worked on Gen1 and not Gen4 no idea.. but your experience is not unusual.
The TC is also pretty picky when it comes to hubs.. so not everything works even then.
Are you running SL as per your info..? That should be no problem but for Lion you need to download airport utility 5.6 to even see what is connected. There also could well be some issues in 7.6 firmware for the TC.

  • If I get an airport Extreme/time capsule and plug a USB printer into it does it become an airplay printer so I can print from my I devices

I wanna get a new airport express or time capsule, I'm leanin towards the time capsule but in wanna know If I plug my USB printer into it if it becomes an AirPlay printer so I can print from my iPad

Nope.  It's got to be a real AirPrint printer.
However, you may be able to use an app and print the way you described.  Check out printopia.
