Time capsule and Virgin Media HELP

hi guys
im having a problem connecting my time capsule up to my fibre optic Virgin media service..... Everything is connected up correctly but all i get is a flashing amber light, and the only solution that the time capsule comes up with is to check my LAN cable, which i have done and everything is fine with it.
Im guessing that some where along the lines i have some settings wrong.....
CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Here are some things to check:
1) Is your Time capsule connected to the fibre optic unit via its WAN port?
2) Do you see a tiny green light next to the WAN port on the Time Capsule?
3) Have you powered down the fibre optic unit and the Time Capsule for a few minutes, then powered them back on? This can sometimes be needed to convince a broadband modem to work with a "new" device.

  • Time Capsule and Virgin (UK) 100Mb - I am confused

I have been using a Virgin Media modem with a Time Capsule on a 50Mb download broadband service, and when using my iMac and Macbook was getting around 45Mb download speed wirelessly with the Time Capsule.
Now I have upgraded to 100Mb download speed and using the same speed test site, I only achieve 50Mb download, however when I connect using an ethernet cable to the modem directly (without Time Capsule) can achieve 95-98Mb.
I am very confused and wonder it I am missing something fundamental with the settings.
with a 50Mb download service I get 45-50Mb using it wirelessly
with a 100Mb download service I get 45-50Mb using wirelessly or 95Mb using Ethernet.
Any help would be gratefully received.

Yes. That's the same information an option-click on your AirPort menu bar item should give you.
    PHY Mode: 802.11n
That's good. Anything else would reduce your throughput.
    Channel: 1
You're connected via the 2.4 GHz band. Do you have any devices on your network that only support 802.11b or 802.11g, not 802.11n?
In AirPort Utility, AirPort panel, Wireless tab, what setting do you have for "Radio Mode"? (You may have to pull that list down to see the full text of the setting.) My references suggest that configuring out support for 802.11b/g can speed up a Wi-Fi network. However, this is only useful if you have no 802.11b/g devices.
Yes sorry, when I write Mb I do mean mbps, megabit per second.
No need to be sorry. Megabytes per second is often written as MBps with a capital B. I just wanted to verify that I understood what you were writing.

  • Time Capsule and Virgin 50 MB Broadband

    Hi Guys
Well its me again turning to you for advise.
Today Virgin Media came and upgrade my 20MB broadband to 50MB by installing a new modem.
    (Spec: EuroDOCSIS 3.0/DOCSIS 3.0 Operation
    EuroDOCSIS/DOCSIS 1.0/1.1/2.0 Compatible
    Supports four channel bonding
    Ethernet Interface (RJ-45)(10/100/1000 Mbps compatible)
Its working fine and I have just checked the speed 46MB, however the installation guy said I need a special designed router from them to be able to get max power of 50MB.
I think that my Time Capsule doesnt need it anything as it can handle it really well, but as you can imagine when I mention Apple Mac to the Virgin guy he had already panic in his eyes. He doesnt know. he even gave me a leaflet how to download speed optimizer for Windows. Fool. Obviously my 24inch iMac is not big big enough to see I dont use Windows. Da!
Anyway, their website says: " Your new 50Mb broadband comes with a wireless 'N' router as part of your package7. This not only provides greater wireless range than a 'G' router, but coverage is also better, so the amount of 'black spots' you've experienced in the home should be reduced. When it comes to speed, only wireless 'N' can support our ultra fast up to 50Mb service wirelessly. And, even when broadband speeds soar to 100Mb and over in the future, our 'N' router can still handle it."
Is Time Capsule N router itself? I am sorry I am not good with all that jargon.

It's not the router that they say isn't compatible, it's the Wireless-N USB adaptor!
I've got a TimeCapsule 1gb that I just cannot use with the 50mb service!
It won't pick up a valid IP address or DNS info from the cable modem!
Plugged the supplied Netgear router in (WNR2000) and it worked straight off...
Really puzzled as to why I can't connect via ethernet using the TimeCapsule... had WiFi working once through the TimeCapsule, but still couldn't get Ethernet connection to work..
Is there any step by step guide to setting up the TimeCapsule with Virgin??

  • 2 TB Time Capsule - 100MB Virgin Media Broadband

I've seen that Virgin Media are upgrading to a new wireless router with modem build into it. This is going to cause me some massive conflicts with my time capsule tho.
    http://shop.virginmedia.com/broadband/broadband-extras/wireless-routers.html
At the moment.. I have a 50mb modem that came with my 50mb broadband... Downstairs... and my wireless time capsule upstairs for easy of use connected VIR RJ45 cable.
I think that my current modem could possibly handle the 100MB speeds but I would need to check with Virgin Media first.
I've just done a speed test and got 49.96MB download speed over wireless!!
    http://www.speedtest.net/result/1098123263.png
While running, Skype, and many other apps, including a PC connected to the network!
My main question is how will the time capsule work if I have to upgrade my modem to this new router? because I removed my old wireless router and replaced it with the Time Capsule.
Also does anyone have any ideas if the Time Capsule is able to pump out 100MB wireless speeds?
    Thanks
    Simon

    Simon,
You have MB and mb confused. Internet and network connection speeds are normally stated in terms of Mbps or Mb.
You have a 50 Mbps modem now. There is no reason to replace this with a new modem/router unless you really need the higher speed 100 Mbps device. If you elect to do this, all that you need do is replace the modem you have now with the new modem/router. Your Time Capsule will continue to work the same way it does now. You simply would not use the wireless capability of the new modem/router, or you could turn it off since you are using the Time Capsule for that capability.
Also does anyone have any ideas if the Time Capsule is able to pump out 100MB wireless speeds?
It's 100 Mbps, not 100 MB. The Time Capsule supports up to 1000 Mbps connections using ethernet. The fastest attainable speed over wireless is about 300 Mbps, so your Time Capsule will continue to be much faster than the new modem/router if you choose to go with the new device. In other words, your wireless speed will be limited by your Internet connection, not by the Time Capsule.

  • Time Capsule and Unity Media (perhaps Germany only)

    Hello all,
I had since 12 month Unity Media as my new Service Provider for Internet Access 100MB. All 6 or 9 month the IP Adress would be changed but the Time Capsule don´t renew the internet connection.
The Original Probelm: The Time Capsule must be in DCHP Mode and NAT (IP Adress Range 2.100 to 2.200).
The cable modem from CISCO EPC3212 that altough has activate DHCP mode and the Bridge Modus from the Time Capsukle don´t work togehter that the combintation between the cabel modem and the Time Capsule - I get no internal IP Adress range in this combination.
But when I activate the DCHP MOde altough at the TimeCapsule unitl the next IP Adress change always works fine, then I have NAT Probelms the IP Adress will be undiferent, e.g. ....!!
Any Ideas what can I do do get a contious stable solution.
    Regards
    Frank

What version of the TC are you using? A1xxx from the base please. And what firmware is it running.
It sounds like you have something wrong in the main setup.
This cable modem is a straight modem although it has phone service provided as well.
You cannot use DHCP mode.. unless the ISP gives you a block of IP addresses.
The correct mode is DHCP for internet and DHCP and NAT for networking.
If it is not working that way I suggest you borrow another router and test. You need to power cycle the modem each time you make a change. If it has a battery backup to keep phones working you also need to remove the battery. Keep the modem off for 5min, if the modem still fails to pick up the public IP then use times of 30min or 1hour then try overnight. No luck either the modem or the TC is faulty, or the ISP have altered something. You will need to contact the ISP.

  • Can i use my time capsule with virgin wifi hub

can i use 2tb time capsule with virgin media wifi hub router

Yes, but it will need to connect to the Virgin router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection from one of the LAN <--> ports on the Virgin router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.

  • I recently purchased a time capsule and thought I would put my itunes on it as an external drive as my mac book air only has 120gb. However I can not be connected to the internet and the TC at the same time in order to download the files to the TC. Help?

I recently purchased a Time Capsule and put my iTunes library on there so that I wasn't using up my hard drive space. Only 120gb on my mac book air. However when I download songs from iTunes I can not be connected wirelessly to the internet at the same time. Can I hard wire my TC in to my mac so that I can treat the TC as just an external hard drive? Thanks

Initially, you asked if you can hardwire your MBA to the TC. The answer is yes, by using the optional USB Ethernet adapter that Apple provides. However, in order for your MBA to access the TC's internal or USB-attached HDD, it would need to establish a network connection to it. This would be true of any NAS device on an Ethernet network. Therein, lies the problem. Your MBA cannot connect to two networks simultaneously.
One option then, would be to have two separate iTunes Media folders; one on the MBA & the other on the TC. This way, you can download the music to your MBA when connected to the Internet at the AirPort lounge, and then use iTunes Consolidate Library feature to transfer the audio files to the TC's iTunes Media Folder location. A great program to help maintain multiple iTunes Librarys and/or Media Folders, that you may want to consider, is PowerTunes.

  • Please Help - Time Capsule and External hard drive Issues

Recently, I switched from Comcast to AT&T uverse as my internet provider and I started experiencing problems.
    (1) I have a 4th generation Apple Time Capsule which I am using as my router.
    (2) Connected to the Apple Time Capsule - USB - is an external hard drive (not for backup with Time Machine.)
    (3) I have a 2011 Macbook pro which I use to access my file on my time capsule and external hard drive.
    (4) I had been using my AT&T portable Hotspot from my cell phone to get internet access on my MacBook pro from remote locations to gain access to my external hard drive which is attached to the time capsule.
    (5) On August 2, 2014, I switched from Comcast to AT&T and had the AT&T turn off the router function. (I have been using the router from my apple time capsule)
    (6) Under Network I switched to bridge mode.
    (7) And since August 2, 2014 my time capsule has not been backup.
THE PROBLEM - I need to be able to use the hotspot function from my cell phone to gain access on the external hard drive using my MacBook Pro which I was able to do before. Now it is showing time capsule under finder but unable to connect.
Do I need to reset my Time Capsule since I have a new service provider. Everything else works fine - meaning able to get internet signal but unable to access my external hard drive and backup my time capsule. Please HELP.

If you got ATT to turn off router function in their modem..
Then 6. is wrong.. You cannot have the Network switched to bridge mode..
You must have it set to dhcp and nat.
That is also why you cannot backup.. the TC is off the network.
Please change back to router mode in the TC.
Ensure the internet tab shows dhcp and you create a wireless network.
Then power down the TC... power down the ATT modem.. wait about 20min (you can try 5min.. but it might not be long enough).
Power up the ATT modem.. wait 2min for things to flash lights in de right blinkin order.. then start the TC.
Open the airport utility and make sure your TC captured the public IP and is now working as the router.
That should fix that end of it.. the hotspot end??
    Tell us what happens.

Hello fastuca. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    Let's double-check your base stations' settings ...
o If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
o Open AirPort Utility and select the Time Capsule (TC).
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

i have 1TB time capsule and i need to back up more media. Can i also use a 3TB time capsule asswell?

You can, but it is not possible to continue backups "seamlessly" from one Time Capsule to the other.
Time Machine will make a new complete backup of each Mac on the first pass when you connect the new 3TB Time Capsule.

new help with my mac air and airport extreme time capsule dont know how to save to time capsule and use as a external hd would like 2 store my home videos and pictures on the time machine (ONLY) as the MAC AIR has storage space limited space please help. THANK YOU.

See the info here about sharing or using the TC for data.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
It is extremely important you realise.. the Time Capsule was never designed for this.
It is a backup target for Time Machine.. that is the software on the computer that does backups.. it has no direct connection to the Time Capsule.
It has no ability to back itself up.. unlike all other NAS in the market. It is therefore likely one day you will lose all your files unless you seriously work out how to backup.
The TC is slow to spin up the hard disk and fast to spin down. iTunes and iPhoto will continually lose connection to their respective libraries.
iPhoto in particular is easy to corrupt when you move photos over wireless into the library.. once corrupted all is corrupt. A single photo will ruin it all.. so backup is utterly essential.
Time Machine cannot do backups of network drives. ie the TC. You will need a different backup software like CCC. You will then need another target to backup to..

  • New to time capsule and need help with installing it?

I just bought a new 3tb time capsule and  also new to apple routers I want to use this as my new wireless router how do I go about switching this out with my router now. Im using a linskys router now nothing special I think its only a 300Mbps the only problem is that we just  had our new house complete and prewired with ethernet connection in every room and a security system that runs off of the router how do I go about switching that set up to the new time capsule? I know if I had to have the company come out to do it they charge a hefty fee which I know its that hard to do the only thing that's stopping me is that set up to the security system I don't want to screw that up???

    Three different aspects
    1. Set the form up to submit the data (XML or FDF), not the full PDF. You can import the data to the PDF on your end.
    2. You can turn on Extended Reader Rights, but then limit the use/users to 500 by the EULA. The applicability of this option depends on your intended application. In a small office, it would be fine. For general web use you would likely exceed the limit and be in violation of the EULA.
    3. There may be an e-mail problem, one reason that e-mail is not recommended for form submission (even if the manual discusses it). Again, in a controlled environment like an office it will probably work fine, but in a web setup it is best to use a web script. There are 2 problems with e-mail that both depend on the client system (YOU have no control, but will be blamed in any case). First, the client machine has to be set up as an active MAPI client. Many folks do not have this on. Second, some e-mail clients treat PDFs like text and the result is a corrupt e-mail submission, even if it makes to you.
If you have the possibility of web submission, do it. I suggest only having the form data submitted and not the form.

  • Time Capsule and iTunes set up not working, please help.

I have moved my itunes library to my time capsule and changed my itunes preferred path to its time capsule location. However when I restart my apple laptop, after having shut it off for the night, and open itunes (time capsule is visible and accessible to the laptop), itunes has reversed the preferred path I set to point to my time capsule to my local laptop hard drive instead. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I have looked in other discussions concerning lost itunes file paths, however I never had this issue with my wired external drive; and I only start iTunes after I am sure that my computer can access the files on my time capsule. Thank you.
My laptop is a Macbook Pro 2.3 Ghz running Mac OS X (10.5.2)

If you're still experiencing "disconnects," even with the earlier firmware, but not experiencing these at all when directly connecting your computer to the modem, there is a good chance that one of the following may still be the problem:
o Bad Ethernet cable between the D-Link & TC.
    o The TC is faulty.
    o The D-Link is faulty.
o The TC & D-Link are just not compatible with each other.
o The ADSL signal strength, coming from your ISP into the D-Link, may need "tuning."
I'd start with trying a known good Ethernet cable. If that doesn't resolve the problem try contacting your ISP/ADSL-Provider next to see if they can run a ADSL line diagnostic to verify that there is a good signal to the D-Link; While you have them on the line, see if they can provide you with another modem.
Finally, if available to you, try temporarily replacing the current TC with another TC or another wireless router.

  • ITunes Library on External Hard Drive via Time Capsule and plugged in directly to laptop when away from home

To save space on my macbook pro I would like to export my iTunes library onto an external usb hard drive. So that I don't have to have the hard drive plugged in to my laptop all the time when I am at home I would like to plug it into a Time Capsule and access it over my wireless network. This is the simple part that I am confident about setting up.
The tricky part is as follows. When I take my laptop out of the house when I am traveling I would like to still be able to access my iTunes library by plugging the external usb hard drive directly into my laptop as I will not be able to access my home network anymore.
I know this will potentially break all of the tracks in my iTunes library as the file paths will change as it will be plugged directly into my laptop rathern than via the Time Capsule. Does anybody know of a way to quickly fix all of the broken tracks in the library or a way I could achieve the above?
I hope someone can help me

I have nothing wireless in the house and no experience with Time Capsules.  However, as long as the drive appears on the desktop in both scenarios there should be no problem.  If there is, hold down the option key while starting iTunes and guide it to the library.itl file on the external drive.
Do not confuse moving your library with moving your media, as many people do.  Your library is your whole iTunes folder.  You move it by copying the whole folder to the other drive and starting iTunes with the option key as above.  If you want to move only media you do so through preferences settings in iTunes, making sure you organize (consolidate) your media so it actually copies it to the other drive.  There are advantages and disadvantages to either situation, but generally unless you are going to have media on one several drives, or you plan on sharing media but not library listings with other users, you are best off moving teh whole library.  Moving the whole library also has less potential for resulting in broken links since your library is all in one package and not split across drives.
