Time Capsule and Windows Vista network

Hi everyone,
Just looking for some advice/feedback.
I have recently purchased a MacBook Pro and love it. Now considering buying a Time Capsule - 3 reasons - extra storage space, allow printing from all computers, and ease of backup with Time Machine.
I currently have a DLink wireless modem/router that is wired to a Windows Vista PC, a windows laptop and the new Mac.
My question is: How will the Time Capsule fit in with everything? I am guessing that the DLink will remain wired to the PC, and the Time Capsule will be plugged into the DLink. Will I gain extra speed with the Time Capsule and how do I allow it to take over the wireless network?
Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Are you saying that the Vista PC will connect to the wireless network, but can't get an internet connection, or it can see the wireless network, but can't connect?
If it cannot connect to the wireless network, is there an error message displayed? If so, what does the message say?

  • Time Capsule and Windows Vista

Hi there i have a Macbook Pro and my flat mate has windows vista on his note book.
So i am thinking of getting Time capsule 500gb to back up my Mac pro and use it for the internet (going to replace my old wireless modem with time capsule) and my flat mate just wants to connect to the internet thats all no backing up files or anything like that.
Will it be easy to set up his vista to connect to the internet? does he need apple software or anything like that?
And will he get the same internet speeds as before?
Sorry i am new to Time Capsule don't know much about it just don't want to wast money
    Thanks for your help

Yes, it should all work fine and connecting to the Time Capsule will be just like connecting to any other wireless router. There is no additional applications needed.

  • Problems accessing Time Capsule on windows Vista

I have an iMac running Leopard and a laptop running Vista Home Edition. I'm having some problems accessing Time Capsule from the Vista machine. everytime I click to access the drive, a message appears in the menu bar of the window that says (not responding). I've tried leaving it. I've even changed my entire wireless network to bypass the original g router (belkin) to use TC, so I now have TC as my router, Belkin just setup as a wired broadband modem but I still get the same problem. The mac seems fine, although I have had quite a few issues with drop outs.
both machines have the latest version of Airport Utility and Bonjour.
The laptop is a recent purchase to replace a dead XP machine, this worked fine and I managed to get stuff backed up just before it died, thankgod.
    Any help appreciated.

No problem seeing Time Capsule with iMac, Dell desktop XP Home, Dell notebook XP Pro, and Fusion with XP Pro. All installed according to the installation guide. Installed AirPort Utility on all machines and updated firmware to 7.3.1. To see the other machines, make sure file sharing is on. Firewall on the PCs may need to be turned off. The printer plugged into the USB port also worked with all the XP systems and the iMac with a few missing features on iMac (I am assuming different driver issues). BTW, logging onto the created network and accessing the Time Capsule HD are separate. If you've entered different passwords for the HD and wireless networking when setting up Time Capsule initially (which I did through the iMac first), you'll need to enter them separately with the XP machines. You could also try resetting Time Capsule. Seems to work for others.

  • Time capsule and Windows Back Up Centre

    Hi There
I have just bought a new Time capsule and it has set up properly, except for one small issue.
I can see the TC in Explorer as a network drive but it can not be seen in the back up centre, has any one got any ideas on how to fix this problem?
    cheers in advance
    Graham

map the drive thru explore first, enable the option to reconnect at logon and provide the TC id and pasword.
then use the windows backup menu and select your newly maped drive as the backup media.

  • I have working Netgear network. Want to add new Time Capsule and run 2nd network for new apple TV and Imac, and keep the netgear network for my PC and Canon printer.

I have working Netgear N600 dual band router network. The existing network has an XP netbook PC, canon printer, 2 Iphones, Epson Air printer, an Ipad, 3 roku boxes, backup drive. Just bought a new Apple TV box, and time capsule 2T.  I have an IMac on order but don't have it here yet.
My goal is to add new Time Capsule and create 2nd "apple" network for new apple TV, Iphones, Ipad, Epson Air printer and new Imac, and keep the netgear network for my PC, Roku TV boxes, and Canon printer and backup drive.
The Netgear router, the time capsule and new IMac will be on the same desktop, I dont need to backup my netbook PC to time capsule.
    Where do I start?
Which device connects to my modem first, the TC2 or the Netgear?
Is it best wait for the Imac before starting or can the TC2 be set up from my Ipad or PC?
    Thanks.

    It is pretty simple..
Setup the TC in bridge and plug it into the Netgear.. I would leave the netgear as the main router for now, although in the future you can swap things around. The netgear firmware may have issues with bonjour and airplay/airprint?? Does your ipad print ok now?
You can setup the TC using Mac, PC (at least up to win7) or iOS.. they all have airport utility available.
Bridge mode is set differently depending on the version of the utility. This is v5 and how the windows one will look (at least similar to).
    v6 will be as
With the TC in bridge you will still create a wireless network.. and give it a different name from the netgear.. then all the apple devices can connect to it. Use ethernet rather than wireless if the imac is on the desktop with it. Much faster and better for using Time Machine backups.
If you run into any issues.. just post the particular issue. It will take a bit of getting used to, but isn't hard.

  • SOLUTION TO Time Capsule and extend wireless network using AEBS, Printers..

    Hello GUYS
I find the solution: at least I have extended wireless using TC and old AEBS.
: well everybody have same problems to initialize second AEBS, and set it up.
    OK follow this steps:
put next to each other TC (time capsule) and AEBS (airport extreme) -> switch AEBS off
If you followed installation TC correctly it should work without any problem.
    SETING UP TC PART 1
pres in finder Command + Shift + U =then click Airport utility
    set your TC with manual.
On piece of paper record Airport ID:
    Click on TIME CAPSULE
I recommend change name not to use deffault long name for TC. Simply call it TC if you want. Set password.
In wireless. Write a name of your Network, keep it simple TC627 what ever. Write it down on paper. security WPA2 personal and password.
    Update. and close utility
    End of part 1
    Part 2:
    AEBS setup.
Switch AEBS on: No need to switch off TC
Press reset button for more than 5 sec. so everything is restore to factory settings.
-> in the bar top click wireless and select AEBS. You have to do this otherwise Airport utility will not recognise AEBS.
When you are done. Command shift U
Click airport utility. and manual setup.
-> write down the Airport ID.
Set up your AEBS, name something simple so you know what it is. Password and security.
Here do yourself favor use the same passwords as on TC and security.
    NOW ->
    click Wireless.
*Wireless network has to be same as on TC.*( it is on the paper)
    Select Participate in wireless network
Radio mode b,g compatible or only N it is up to you.
I setup WPA2Personal again with the same password( same on TC)
    Click WDS
    Select WDS remote
    select Allow wireless clients
and now write the TC airport ID into WDS main: number (it is on your paper)
    Update.
    switch off utility.
no go to right top and change airport back to TC.
    Go to manual
    Click Wireless:
    Select Participate in WDS Network
Click WDS: wds mode to Main
allow wireless clients: and write into WDS remotes AEBS ID, (it is on the paper).
    and update.
    both airports will restart.
    and you are extended.
You made it. Go to Utility Cmd,shift, U and you should be able to see both airports.
Now what you have to do is to take AEBS to different place.
Put it somewhere in second room. Go back to your computer. Leave it for couple of minutes. 10 -15 is ok.
to make sure your TC can find AEBS. If not TC will indicate by flashing green and orange. = >AEBS has to be closer.
correct is that TC has still green light.
Before you start with time machine: read what files to include
    hope it helps.

  • Time Capsule and Windows 7 clear approach

    Hello all,
I tried now for one month to install the Time Capsule (with Airport and Bonjour software) with Windows 7 WIRED.
First I had to turn on the Net-Bios, which is difficult to find. I did.
The Time Capsule was visible in the Windows File system, now it is gone. The green button is burning. It's 4th generation.
The help-desk of Apple Holland can not help me and they say that it will not work with Windows because the Windows file system is different than the Mac system. Then they say that I have to make the same IP adres on the Time Capsule and the Windows file system, which is impossible as they said also.
I bought the Macbook Air. I want to put all my files from the Windows PC to the Time Capsule in order, after that,  to reach the MacBook Air with the Time Capsule. The shop told me that this is possible. I tried some advises from the web, but seems to be difficult for me. The help-desK isn't able to help me anymore.
Please who can help with a clear step-by-step approch?

doesnt work for me, its a real dealbreaker.
I've tried manually adding and editing the lmcompatability registry key, mapping via explorer, mapping via net use, browsing via unc, tried with airport config software and without, mapped via IP and mapped via hostname.
The thing is just flakey and doesnt work.
    I've tried firmware 7.4, 7.41 and 7.42. As you say, 7.3 is no-go with a dualband.
The problem for me isn't mapping the drive, but using it once it's mapped. files and folders fail to copy, stuff doesn't always delete, drive sometimes becomes unavailable. The TC is solid otherwise.
There has to be another registry setting to change somewhere though hopefully. Either that or they've tightened the security within win7 to the point of no return for some legacy stuff.

  • Firmware 7.4.1 Time Capsule and Windows

    Hi
I know that firmware 7.4.1 has caused problems for people using Time Capsules with Windows PCs:
    http://theappleblog.com/2009/03/06/a...ate-available/
I know that this problem affects the original TCs as I actually have an original TC and I had the problem with firmware 7.4.1 (fixed by downgrading to 7.3.2).
Does anyone know if the problem with 7.4.1 only affects the older TCs or does it affect the new updated TCs (released earlier this year) as well?
I want to buy another TC, but not if it has the 7.4.1 problem and not if it can't be downgraded to 7.3.2.
    Thanks

i have been using an AEB w/ an attached USB drive to backup wirelessly using Time Machine for several months. I've had no problems restoring several files wirelessly from the TM backup. No problems at all so far. I have a 2nd hard drive attached to the AEB which serves iTunes and movies wirelessly. No problems there either.
The only issue is that accessing these drives is slow even when the mac is connected to the AEB via ethernet (the TC exhibits the same issue). If you aren't upset by that speed, or don't mind jacking the drive straight into you mac when you need to make big transfers, it's a perfectly livable system. I was certainly hoping that the new AEB and TC would feature upgraded server ability and loosen up that bottleneck but they apparently have not. c'est la vie
As far as an official comment from apple is concerned, it's doubtful that you'll ever get that. And if you did get it, what good would it do? Do you think they'd pay you a huge settlement if they 'officially supported' this backup method and you wound up with a corrupted backup that caused data loss? It either works or it doesn't and personally I give more credence to the experience of other users and my own cautious trial than I do to any official statement Apple makes on the subject.

  • How can I see my network drive from time capsule on windows vista pc?

I connected my Time Capsule 2tb to Windows PC and do not see the Network Drive for TC. I can see TC on my wireless MacProBook, but cannot see TC drive on the pc. What can I do on the PC to find Time Capsule's drive?
    Thank you.

From the Mac as it is easier to use.. open airport utilty and go to the  disks, file sharing page. turn on the guest account.. give read write  access.. and make sure the TC is in the correct workgroup or type in the  work group name.. update the TC.
In vista.. Open windows explorer.. in the address bar type \\ip\
IP meaning the IP of the TC. . wait.. waiting wait.. windows scratches its bum.. thinks some more.. will finally kick up a username and password request.. type in whatever you need. Voila.. TC appears.

  • How to use my time capsule with windows vista

i have a 2tb time capsule iphone 3gs appple tv and a ipad 2 the wife and kids have iphone 3gs and 4 and id like to set up a home network for us all to use and share music and photos is this possible

Sorry the title never gets into detail at any point.. no vista computer is listed.
Access the vista computer to TC turn on the guest network and allow full read write access. Make sure you have the workgroup set correctly. There are issues sometimes on the windows side but try that.
As for using the TC as a file store.. well it isn't a good idea. It is a backup device.. which has no ability to back up itself. There is no mirrored disks and one day it will die and you can say bye bye to your precious photos and music. You can work your way around the issue.. sure.. in the end you will need an alternative backup on a computer.. that alternative backup will then be backed up to where??
If you must run your itunes and iphoto library on the TC just read about how to set up the libraries in network location. Google will find the posts.
    http://gigaom.com/apple/using-time-capsule-as-a-media-drive/
You perhaps should read all the other posts about why not.. as well as how to.

  • Time Capsule and windows 7

Just installed a new time capsule. I have a MacBook and my wife has a pc. I am able to get on fine. I downloaded airport utility for windows 7 from Apple support for her, but when I open network preferences I can only get on the guest site from the pc. Question: I named the time capsule network the same as I had on our old wireless network. When I open network preference in the pc it shows the name of that network, but says the settings have changed and can't log on. If I change the name of the network would that make the difference?
    Thanks for any feedback.

Login using airport utility.. manual setup.. go to airport.. wireless tab.. change the names.. update.
There is no need to reset at all.. do it from the Mac. But use 5.6 utility if you are using Lion.
It can also help btw to lock the channels and make 5ghz a different name to 2.4ghz.

  • Time Capsule and Windows 7 Back Up and Restore

    Hello,
I would like to know i can manage to save my backup of windows 7 on the Time Capsule using the back and restore tools ?
I am using on my time capsule the file sharing with the disk password, but it doesnt seems to work.
    Can u please help ?
    Thx !

Open the guest access and give read and write permissions.
Also make sure you actually give the WORKGROUP name in the WORKGROUP area, correct to the win7 workgroup..
If you still cannot access the TC try turning off the firewall in win7.. you may also need to ensure that win7 is recognised as in home, ie local network, not work or public.
Open a command window and ping the TC to make sure you have network access.
In windows explorer type \\ipaddressofTC\ into the address bar.. that being its IP address. You can also try netbios name.
If none of that works post again but it should.. on latest firmware on the TC??
You need to use windows backup which is near useless.. I recommend you download a utility that can do a proper disk image.. there are plenty around.

When i try to log in to the time capsule I keep getting an error message that wont let me log in. I turned the firewalls off and it still doesnt let me. Any help??

Hello lascall. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
See if the following resolves your Vista access issue with the Time Capsule:
o From the Vista desktop, click Start
    o Search for: security
    o Click 'Local Security Policy'
o Goto Local Policies > Security Options
o Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
o Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
o Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    o De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    o Click OK
