Time Capsule and Wireless Networking

I have three Macs and would want to share same iPhotos, Aperture and iTunes libraries on all Macs (2 MBPs, iMac). Can someone please help me what are the options?
Would Time Capsule work for this purpose?
I don't want to use same libraries on all three Macs at the same time but if uploaded some photos on MobileMe from iPhoto on one Mac then the other Mac when accessing iPhoto, should also have the same updated libraries/info.

I don't know about the photos, but it certainly is possible with itunes, I myself have that arrangement sharing between three computers.
Now, it requires a few steps.
Find your iTunes library on the computer copy the entire library AS IT IS! (that means: Album Artwork, the .xml files and the .itdb files including your "username library", for instance Freedom90), copy that to where you want it on the external drive/time capsule, set it up like this:
[externaldrive]iTunes/Freedom90/Library
"Library" contains the music, iTunes contains the settings and the database that tells iTunes what files are where and so on.
Second is to reset iTunes and point it to the new music location
You can either hold control down while opening iTunes or going to:
Preferences - Advanced and press reset then "change"
Point iTunes to the new location.
Repeat this step with the other computers.
On thing you should know: iTunes doesn't have any clue on how to monitor these directories, so each time you add music from one location you have to manually add them from the other locations.

  • Time Machine backup to Time Capsule clobbers wireless network

    Dear All,
When TimeMachine starts a backup to my new Time Capsule, the wireless network gets clobbered. Other computers on the network's throughput to external sites goes to basically zero (slow ping times, dropped packets- basically unusable.) Is this the expected behavior?
The configuration I have for my home network is
cable modem -> time capsule serving wireless network -> "g" network with 2-3 laptops (macbook pro and dell windows laptops.) The dells can't do anything when Time Machine runs, and since it runs hourly it is a bit irritating. I'm considering getting another Mac and then the downtime of my network would increase even more....
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    Peter

My old G5 has 802.11b, and back ups to TC are SLOW. But then the "wire speed" of g is 11M bits/s or ~1 MB/s, but in the real world if you got 100KB/s that's probably good. 100KB/s is only 6 MB/min or .36 GB/hr.
So 2GB/.36GB which is 5.6 hrs.
Or to put it another way that's about 3 GB/hr at very best.
And that's ignoring stuff like compression!
in short: not usable with 802.11g
    ===
On my Mac Pro with 802.11n (54 Mbs) I get about 8x that because "n" is about 5x faster wire speed and seems to have better "software".
    e.g. I get about about 25 GB/hr on my ".11n" system
Still way slow but at least useable.
    ===
Moral of the story don't bother which TC if you don't have "n"

  • Airport Express + Time Capsule and wireless access to internet

I have a wireless internet provider. It's an open access without encryption.
I would like to have the airport express connect wirelessly to the internet then connect the airport express by ethernet wire to the WAN port in the time capsule and then have a local encrypted network from the time capsule in order to access with my mac book wirelessly to the time capsule.
I tried all ways of configuring it but none worked.
Do you know if it is possible and what should I configure ?
If somebody can help me... I am getting crazy with that...

This will not work. The Ethernet port on the AirPort Express (AX) is active only when the AX uses WDS to wirelessly join a network. Unfortunately this requires you to be using a compatible base station to create the wireless network AND you must configure the base station and AX to connect using WDS.

  • Time Capsule and extend network

    Hello,
my connection between Time Capsule and router is nearly working, but not perfect. Router an Time Capsule are connect via WLAN. Setup an possition of the router can not be changed. The router is far away from my laptop , so there is a very poor connection. Thats why I wanted to extend the network. Extending with WDS is not possible because of the router configuration. I have choosen " extend network" in the Time Capsule setup, picked the network from the list and entered the key ( 128 bit WEP ). Time Capsule tells me it could not extend the network, although I can access the Time Capsule and have a working internet connection. I am accessing the Time Casule via Router and all wireless, so the router an Time Capsule have to be connected, somehow. Can someone help me to get this setup really working? Or is it possible to access the router via Time Capsule? Because the Time Capsule is close to my laptop an I would have ab better connection like this.

This is not the actual problem. The connection is working, but very slow, because the router ( with dd-wrt software on it ) is too far away. So i wanted the Time Capsule to support the network. Connecting router and Time Capsule with WDS is not possible, because the setup of the router hast to be NAT. There is a another option in the Time Capsule setup to extend a network without WDS, which I wanted to use. The Time Capsule connect to this network via WLAN ( otherwise I could not access it ) but it does not extend the existing network. This is problem with Time Capsule an router. I wanted to know what I have to change in setting so that the Time Capsule extends the network. Is there somthing special with password or IP adress ( at the moment it is set to DHCP ), .... ?

  • Time capsule, joined wireless network, no internet on LAN sockets

I have a problem, no internet access from the ethernet sockets on the Time Capsule.
    Here is my set-up:
I have a new wireless router from BT in the UK. A BT Home Hub 2.
This provides my internet access and a wireless network fine.
I have my TC connected to the wireless network using "join an existing wireless network".
I cannot reach the BT router to plug in an ethernet to the TC so need a wireless connection.
All is working fine, backing up etc....
But, If I plug into the ethernet sockets on the back of the TC I cannot connect to the internet.
I think the TC is using DHCP.
Anything I plug in cannot access the internet.
Is this a problem with the set-up I have made perhaps, as I have previously used the ethernet sockets when the TC was extending a wireless network in my past home and it worked fine, but I had an AEBS as the wireless router and a simple modem connected to the AEBS via ethernet.
So the only difference is the TC is joining a wireless network instead of extending one.
TC cannot extend the wireless network of the BT Home Hub 2.
Is there a way around this does anyone know?
    Thanks in advance!
    Gary.

Welcome to the discussion area, Gary!
I have a problem, no internet access from the ethernet sockets on the Time Capsule.
When the Time Capsule "joins" a wireless network, the routing functions within the device are disabled, so there is no signal present at the ethernet ports. In this type of configuration, the Time Capsule becomes in effect, simply a wireless backup device.
If you need to enable the ethernet ports on the Time Capsule on your network, your only option is to connect the Time Capsule to your main router using an ethernet connection. If it's not possible to run the cable, you might want to take a look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by using the AC wiring in your home to transmit the signal.

  • Will signal strength or internet speed suffer when using a Generation 1 Time Capsule and wireless extending a network with a Generation 5 Airport Extreme

I have a wireless network in my home and I have a Time Capsule 1st generation and a Airport Extreme 5th Generation, will this cause my internet to be slow or have glitches with signal strength?

We've gone over this in the other thread.
If the Time Capsule will be connecting using wireless only, everything depends on the quality of the connection between the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule.
The quality of the connection will be affected by the distance that the Time Capsule is located from the AirPort Extreme and any obstructions in the signal path.
If you have a ceiling between the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule, then you should expect the signal arriving at the Time Capsule to have lost 30-40% of its bandwidth (speed). So, the Time Capsule can only repeat the weaker signal that it receives.
Other walls or other obstructions like heavy furniture, large mirrors, etc will also affect the wireless signal as well as cordless phones and other wireless networks around you.
If you are lucky enough to have line-of-sight between the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule, then the wireless connection between those devices can work quite well. Few of us have this luxury, and must settle for significant compromises in performance.
If the wireless connection between the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule does the job for you reliably, then you can leave things as is.  If you are not getting the reliable performance that you need, then you will need to establish a wired Ethernet connection between the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule.
As you might imagine, there is virtually no signal loss in a wire, even up to 300+ feet or 100 meters.

  • Problem with Time Capsule and Wireless Printing (Mac+PC Mixed)

I have a time capsule that is the wireless router for the house and my iMac and laptops use the wireless network beautifully. I installed a Dell 1320C color laser printer by connecting it to the usb port on the time capsule. The airport express utility did NOT recognize any USB printer connected to the time capsule. I was however able to wireless print from my iMac by asking the printer utility to find all available printers which it did and then installing the printer drivers (thanks google). So, while i cannot find my printer as being connected to the time capsule through the airport utility, i can find it through the print utility as a connection through bonjour and i can print just fine to it.
Now i installed bonjour on my laptops and found and selected the 1320c just fine. When i try to print through the laptops (pc), nothing happens and the file stays in the print queue.
I am willing to live with the first quirk as I can print wirelessly from the iMac. I however need help to print from the laptops.
    Any suggestions?
thank you so much in advance

Once I connect the printer via ethernet to the time capsule, how do I

It is connected to your network. Check your printer setup manual on how to set it up. Or go the the Dell website for printer support if you can't find your manual.
    2) can i then run bonjour from my windows laptops and see the printer through the network?
Via ethernet, it shouldn't need Bonjour to set up.

  • Can't connect Time Capsule to wireless network...

I was able to backup my computer with Time Capsule if the computer and Time Capsule are connect with the internet cable.  But then when I unhook the computer, it can't connect wirelessly.  If I look in my available wireless networks, I do find the TIme Capsule network, but then I try to connect, it won't connect.  I need some help connecting to that network so I can backup wirelessly!

If the computer can see the wireless network, connection issues can be poor signal or interference.
Wrong previous setup on the airport .. go into the network preferences for the airport and see if it is getting an IP address.. if it fails make sure the setting is correct.
Plug back in by ethernet and redo the wireless setup of the TC.
Use SMB type names.. Short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.
Use Fixed radio channels.. try in turn 1, 6, 11 (13 outside US) These are the only non-overlapping channels.
Use no security at all for testing.. but then WPA2 Personal is the only security rated for N wireless connections.
I recommend also giving a different name to 5ghz so you can force connection to the faster network.
If you still have issue change the mode of the wireless.. there are various manual options..
The idea is to reduce all auto settings so you can be sure it will work.
If you are on Lion or even Mountain Lion use the v5 utility. There are ways and means to install the later.

  • Time Capsule and Wireless Modem/Router

I have recently just moved. In my old apartment I have my time capsule connected to my modem that was not wireless, and I was using it creating a wireless network and backing up my mac book pro.
Now that I have moved, my new cable company has supplied me with a modem and wireless router in 1. It creates its own wireless network.
The internet works fine on the network supplied by the new router. When I plug in my TC into the router (using a ethernet cable) it still backs up my mac book, however the light still flashes and still wont connect or make a new network.
I am wondering what is the best way to set up my new wireless modem/router with my time capsule:
Should I leave as is with it still backing up my macbook or is there a better way to set it up so I have my own mac network supplied by the TC, as well as the current one supplied by the company router?

    You have a choice here..
The simple way to set this up is bridge the TC.. I think that is how it must be setup otherwise your Mac could not back up to it.
The fact that the wireless network of the TC is unavailable is not a major issue unless the current router is slow.
You can do a reset of the TC.. I recommend to still download and use 5.6 utility
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Still far superior to the one in Lion. You might need to do it at first with ethernet directly to the TC and set up wireless again.. use short name with no spaces no special characters. Fix and lock the 2.4ghz wireless channel.
Go to the internet tab, connection sharing and make sure the connection sharing is set to off bridge mode.
Once you do that, plug the TC back into the main router by ethernet.. reboot the whole system.. restart in order modem.. tc.. clients. It should now appear as TC wireless network.
The alternative is to turn off wireless or even bridge the modem router and use the TC in router mode. You will need to look up how to do that. That would make the current modem just like your old one which was a straight pure modem.. but you can easily run into trouble so I think it is not the best option here.

  • Time capsule 2 wireless networks one without internet

    Hi
i have a airport extreme and time capsule setup via ethernet to extend the network in the lounge room - i have setup a wireless network which has full internet access
my question is >> , does anyone know how to setup a second wireless network (without internet access - so it can be used for watching movies from a my cloud hdd via the my cloud app - ) so basically a second wifi network with only wifi -no internet ?
    Is this possible ?
    thanks

Yes, it is possible.. but you will need another wireless router to do it.
Setup the wireless router as a Static IP device running DHCP and running a different wireless name to the apple routers. You will need to swap your device that is watching the video from the airport network to the new network to watch the movie.
This could be done better with a more sophisticated router.. Apple provide no functionality beyond the most basic but lots of routers that allow you to run secondary IP and vlan will allow this without needing multiple networks.. For now though it is easier to just get a cheap wireless router.
Even an Apple router can do what you want.. just set it up as router without a WAN connection.. something like a Gen5 AE would work well and fairly cheap.

  • Time Capsule - Join Wireless Network - DHCP

So I have a Apple 1TB Time Capsule here. I have it joined to the wireless network that's existing using a Linksys WRT300n v1.1 as the router to the DSL line. The Time Capsule receives an IP address giving to it from the Linksys which is acting as a DHCP server. However, if I plug-in my printer or laptop to one of the Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule, they do not receive a DHCP address.
If I check the setup of the Time Capsule in the AirPort Utility, on the Internet tab, then Internet Connection tab, the Connection Sharing is set to "Off (Bridge Mode)", which seems like it should pass the DHCP request from the printer or laptop to the Linksys and receive an IP back, but that doesn't seem to happen. Not sure why, wondering if anyone else has a suggestion.
Also noticed that the Time Machine backups over the wireless are painfully slow. It took 12 hours to do a 2GB backup, no idea why, never been slow like this in the past before I was connected to the Linksys device.

I have a similar setup (1st Generation Time Capsule). The TC is wirelessly connected to a Linksys WRT610N Simultaneous Dual Band Router.
I have no problem seeing the TC on my network, or backing up to the TC. I however have a couple of devices in the same location as the TC in which I would like to connect via ethernet to the TC, but it is not assigning out an IP address via the wired connection(s).
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Problem with Time Capsule and wireless devices

Hi, I have a 1TB Time Capsuele 4th Gen. and it has been working since I got it, with only a few problems that were quickly resolved. However, it recently stopped allowing internet access to wireless devices. My home computer is connected on airport and actually does have internet access. However, my iPhone and MacBook, although they are recognizing the network and trying to connect, are being denied internet access. I have restarted everything multiple time, changed wireless details (network name and password) and nothing has worked. Anyone know how to fix this?

Start with a full factory reset and redo the setup again.. the full factory is important.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
No luck then it is faulty.. but it is gen3 or earlier.. all Gen4 TC were available with 2 or 3TB drives.. there is no 1TB Gen4. That makes it Gen3 and over 3 years old.

  • Time Capsule and Wireless Printing

Installed TC a few days ago without incident. Everything including the printer (lexmark 5300) worked as expected. The internet went down for a few minutes yesterday and I had to reboot the modem and the TC. Now the printer is no longer available to the network. I have rebooted the printer a few times without any luck. Apple TV, iPads, Iphones and Mac Books all work fine as does one PC. Ideas? Help?

It helps a lot to tell us how the printer connects.. I am guessing USB.
Open the airport utility.. the 5.6 version since you are on lion and make sure the TC is actually finding the printer. Unplug USB.. and plug it back in again.. if the TC fails to detect it, you need to use a powered hub, even though it previously worked Apple set very low current consumption for USB (maybe the power supply cannot actually handle proper USB 500ma)
If the TC has detected the printer, you might have to delete the printer in the computer and rediscover it again. Network printers via USB router can be less than 100% reliable. You would actually do better plugging it into a computer and sharing that device from there with the network.

  • I can't connect my PC (Win 7) to my Time Capsule for wireless networking

    Any Help?????
I called Apple support and they said to call my PC manufacturer.  What the ****?!?!

This didn't work.  I'm assuming you mean to change it from WPA to Bridged mode?  I did that and it still didn't work for the PC.  However, my MacBook connects, my friend's Mac desktop connects, and iPhone connects just fine.
PC's just simply won't connect.  This is such a bummer.  I've tried 3 windows laptops and my windows PC and they just won't connect to the internet.
They see the network and then try and connect.  All it says is that it is an "unidentified network" with no internet connection.

  • Time Capsule and Netgear Powerline

I have a 2TB Time capsule and need to extend my network (wired) through HomePlugs.  I have had the Netgear Powerline recommended but have noted in the blurb that they are 'not Mac compatible'.
Will they work with my TC and is it simply just a case of plugging them in and they work or is there anything else I need to do settings wise on the TC?
If these will not work can anyone recommend otheres that do and also walk me through the settings I will need to change 9in very simple steps as I am a bit thick ).
Thanks in advance for any help.

Everything works. Follow directions for extending your wireless network at:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259
    Notes:
I first connected the Time Capsule directly to the AirPort Exteme to avoid any powerline networking issues.  This allowed both the time capsule and airport extreme to show up in the AirPort Utility program.
Ensure that in the AirPort Extreme's wireless settings, "Allow this network to be extended" is enabled/checked before you modify the Time Capsule's settings; the "allow... extended" checkbox might not be visible if you are not directly connected as a client to the AirPort Extreme (it is not visible after setup when you are a client of the time capsule extender).
The Time Capsule network setup is easiest if you follow the dialogs instead of doing it manually.
I now have cable modem->ABEX->Netgear HomePlug-> Netgear XAV1004 switch-> Time Capsule->extended wireless network->laptop.  The powerline adapter signal is running from a new house addition built in 1999 through a sub-panel circuit breaker to a main circuit breaker out through 1940s-era wiring, and everything works perfectly, including Time Machine backups from machines on both sides of the powerline adapters.
@LaPastenague: I haven't detected any ports blocked by my Netgear powerline adapter, nor could I find any port blocking topics via an internet search.  I have never installed any of the Netgear management software, so my powerline adapters are not running any encryption... maybe encryption comms cause the issue you raised?  I really doubt the Netgear PowerLine adapters block any host-specific ports because the adapters are working at the physical and data-link layers which are below the port assignments in the transport layer of the OSI model.
