Time Capsule Appears as PC

I have a network with two Macs, a PC, a bunch of iPod Touch and iPhone devices, a wireless HP printer, and a Time Capsule on it.
The Time Capsule appears fine as a Time Capsule in the Finder side bar, however, it does on occasion, as it is now, appears also as a PC named "time-capsule". The Time Capsule's name is just "Time Capsule". I can access the HDD just fine through the "time-capsule".
It's not really anything major or bad, it's just a rather annoying problem that I personally don't think I should be having with an Apple product.
Anybody know why it appears like this, or how to fix it?

Have some of the laptops changed to Lion? I think there is an issue with Lion and the TC. But it could affect the TC and all the computers.
Not sure what else could affect it but I suspect the issue could just be age. Since it is a fairly vital piece of hardware to your business, do you have other backup strategies in place? Perhaps it would be worth taking the TC into apple genius and see if they can figure out the issue, although it seems to not be immediate which makes it hard to discover. You should have apple care on it with all those laptops.. i hope.

  • Time Capsule appears twice in Airport drop down menu

Menu Bar > Airport drop-down menu: My Time Capsule's wireless name shows up twice in my list of wifi sources. Once in the group with all the other routers and again in a group called "Devices".
    Long story short…
I start with a perfectly functional, WPA/WPA2 password-protected Time Capsule: Over a year old. Two MbP's using it for Time Machine backup. Connected to a 1.5TB MyBook external HD via usb. Doubles as my wifi router. Everything's connected to it, including my wifi-enabled printer. Works great. No issues.
I get this idea in my head that I need to hide my wifi signal. I figure it out and ¡Viola! Hidden. Then I try to add my wifi-enabled printer to the list of allowed devices in "Access Control". I hit a big snag and can't figure out how to get it to connect (btw, don't buy a Brother printer. Pure crap). So, I give up and revert permissions back to visible, password-protected state.
Skipping irrelevant issues that I already resolved, I now have the wireless name of my Time Capsule appearing twice in the airport drop down menu. It appears with all the other wifi sources my machine detects AND appears at the bottom under a new category called "Devices".
All I want is to have things back the way they were and this anomaly in the drop down menu is a constant reminder that I #1 failed and #2 bought a crap printer.
(Long story long, I guess. Sorry.) How do I delete this "Devices" group from the airport drop down menu?

  • Time capsule appeared on Finder on both "shared" and "device". now i can't see it on devices

time capsule appeared on Finder on both "shared" and "device".now i can't see it on devices

It will only appear in devices if you mount the drive. This should happen automatically when Time Machine starts.. but you can manually mount the share by just clicking it.

  • Time capsule appears twice on time machine

Hi, since a few days my time machine keeps getting confused because time capsule appears twice. It is the same time capsule and the same backup data but occasionally time machine postpones the backup because it can not connect to the disk. When I hover my pointer over these two icons I see the addresses: The top one appears as afp://xxxx-xxxxx-Time-Capsule.local/Data whine the bottom one (with the wifi icon) appears as afp://xxxx%20;AUTH=SPRxxx%20xxxx%20Time%20Capsule._afpovertcp._tcp.local/Data. Time machine behavior is erratic, sometimes it refuses to connect to the second instance while in other times it does. And this happens also with another Mac backing up on the same time capsule. Any ideas?

Yes please relocate to 10.9 I did not pay attention to the OS version. Now I am using an Apple Time capsule over my home network as I am backing two Macs in it and it has been working flawlessly for almost two years. Having said that it is now working fine switching from one to the other instance (no clue of what drives the selection, I made these two screen captures at a few seconds interval as I was writing this post)
As you can see the "available" disks has changed.
I went back to Time Machine Buddy and pulled up one of the failure reports:
    couldn't determine volume-uuid of mount point: /Volumes/Data-1, error: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=4 "The file “Data-1” doesn’t exist." UserInfo=0x7fdd42714030 {NSURL=file:///Volumes/Data-1, NSFilePath=/Volumes/Data-1}
Failed to get UUID for destination: /Volumes/Data-1
[SnapshotUtilities volumeRefForPath:] FSPathMakeRef failed and returned OSStatus: -43 for path /Volumes/Data-1
Backup failed because the network destination disk was ejected or disconnected unexpectedly!
Backup failed with error 26: The connection to the server was interrupted.

  • Time capsule appears to be blocked in "Preparing backup"

My time capsule (almost 2 yrs old and always fine) now appears to be stuck in "preparing backup" - it's been working there for a couple of hours now, the icon is spinning and the disk sounds active.
Has anyone had this experience and/or any advice out there? I checked that I have the latest software, and nothing else seems buggy. Not sure if this is more likely a software or a hardware problem.
    Thanks!

  • Why doesn't Time Capsule appear in Disk Utility anymore?

Time Machine gave me a msg that it was unable to back up yesterday due to a problem with an image on my iMac (21.5") drive. It said to repair the external drive I'm using with Disk Utility. I tried the Time Capsule I'm using and which is hooked up and has worked fine for months does not appear.  Why?
Also got a msg today saying: "backup cannot be complete due to unexpected error. Code -6584"  Never had such a problem before Mt. Lion.
I see no forum category for Time Machine or Time Capsule.

You need to verify the backup.
Hold the option key while clicking the Time Machine icon on the top right menu area.
But reboot the TC beforehand.. maybe the whole network.
The error is well known.. see

  • Why doesn't time capsule appear in airport utility?

I have the 3TB time capsule just bought last year.  It has been working perfectly fine for all of this time when suddenly my internet connection was slowed to a snails pace.  I reset the modem, the time capsule, etc. and nothing worked.  I called comcast and the guy says the modem is out of sync and he reset it and everything was perfect.  Later that day, it slowed again.  When I called Comcast he said everything is good from the cable side it must be the router (in this case the time capsule).  I opened the airport utility and I was connected to wifi but the time capsule doesnt appear.  It says it cant find any base stations.
I googled the web and tried many things including hard reset, updating IPv6 to link-local only, etc.  When I am connected hard wire to the modem it works fine but as soon as i disconnect and go wireless it no longer can find the base station.  The wireless network and speed work fine I just cant connect to the base station for time machine backups, access my drive etc.
    HELP!

Do a full factory reset.. this is different to hard reset and is recommended when you run into issues.
Mountain Lion does have a bug with the TC in lossing it. The latest firmware was supposed to fix the problem but I doubt it is working.. ie 7.6.4 ..
    I would do the following.
    1. Take the firmware back to 7.6.1
You simply hold the option key whilst clicking the number of the version in the airport utility. Select the firmware you want.. and it will do the downgrade.
    2. Factory reset.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    3. Redo the setup with a completely clean set of names.. which are SMB standard.. ie short, 2-20 characters, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Set wireless 5ghz to a different name.
Set security to WPA2 personal with 8-20 character pure alphanumeric password.
Set wireless channels manually .. use 11, 6, 1 for 2.4ghz try each in turn in that order.
Use around 40 and around 150 for 5ghz.
    4. Test with ethernet.. wireless is never a great test. You never know if the issue is somewhere else. Ethernet is more reliable.

  • Time Capsule appears to be connected by outside ip address not as local

    Hi,
I use connect to server to connect to my time capsule when I am on the road to access files that I don't have with me. It works great but can be a bit slow when downloading large files. It seems that since I upgraded to snow leopard that my time capsule always connects via my cable modems ip address rather than seeing it on the local network. in system preferences under time machine it shows my home ip address under the backup disk name. My wife's macbook pro shows shows time-capsule as the address under the name.
I have not been able to be my computer to backup since i upgraded. It will try all night long and error out. I think it is because it is not seeing it on the local network. has any one else had this problem or know how to over come it?
    Ryan

I wish to have on the capsule iTunes & iPhoto libraries, other documents and have acces to them from both MBPs and phones.
That is possible for your MBPs but not for your iPhones. In addition, you are likely to find its performance with iTunes and iPhoto to be unacceptably slow, to the point of uselessness.
If you really want to, it is possible to configure the Time Capsule join your existing router as a wireless client. In that configuration it will be available to your wireless network as a storage and backup device. It does not strictly need a wired connection to your router. To configure it that way it is best to start with a "hard reset".
It's not worth the effort though, due to the unacceptably slow transfer speed you are likely to achieve.

It doesn't power up and no matter what I do, can't get it to do anything!

    How old is it.. ??

Google search dead Time Capsule.. you will be dismayed at the number of people.. !!

  • Time Capsule appears as a PC Server

I have a Time Capsule that has been working great for over a year to back up several MacBooks at a small business, as well as serve as our interent connection. Yesterday morning, Time Machine couldn't back up to the Time Capsule. I found out the TC showed up as a PC Server in Finder, instead of a Time Capsule, and therefore it will not back up the computers. I checked to make sure the firmware is up to date (was out of the country last week) and everything seemed to be fine. I restarted the Time Capsule and it reappeared correctly, and was able to back up my data.
This morning, the same thing happened again. My Time Machine couldn't connect, and I went into Airport Utility. It couldn't detect the Time Capsule either, but was connected to internet just fine. I restarted the Time Capsule again, and it worked fine again.
Any help on fixing this issue? I don't want to keep restarting the Time Capsule every day if I don't have to.

  • Time Capsule Disk Doesn't Appear in Finder or Disk Utility

I have a 500G Time Capsule (single band, I think) that I want to partition (just into disk images, not volumes) so that I can maintain separate-sized locations for my family's music library, photos, and Time Machine backups for the non-media files on each of a Mac Mini and 4 laptops.  But I will ask more about that later.
My more immediate problem is that the Time Capsule Disk Volume generally just doesn't appear in my Finder or in Disk Utility at all.  A couple weeks ago, for some reason, it did appear once and I took the opportunity to create a 215G Disk Image--leaving 250G for the rest of the Disk Volume which was indicated as having 465G rather than 500G actually available.  But since then (as before) the Time Capsule volume hasn't appeared in Disk Utility at all, and only rarely in the Finder.
In the Finder the Time Capsule appears under the Shared heading in the left panel, with the Time Capsule disk volume appearing as a folder in the right panel (if it connects, which it usually requires a password for, but sometimes it doesn't...).  If I open the folder then the right panel goes blank (indicating, I think, that I have opened the volume but there is nothing inside) and the volume (usually) eventually shows up under my own Mac in the Devices heading.  (That is, the Time Capsule disk volume shows up along with Network, Macintosh HD, and Remote Disk in the right Finder panel when I select my Mac under Devices in the left Finder panel.)  At that point the TC volume shows up in the Finder as a 220G Volume and the disk image shows up indented under it as a 215G Disk Image; indented under the Disk Volume there is also a 5G Sparsebundle file from a Time Machine backup.  If I open the 220G Disk Volume in the right Finder panel then it shows only the 215G Disk Image and the 5G Sparsebundles in the right Finder panel.  This seems to suggest that the 215G Disk Image and the 5G Sparsebundles are both treated as 'used' and the 220G size given for the Disk Volume represents what is left (although 215+5+220=440, so where the extra 25G went I don't know).
If I open the 215G Disk Image in the right Finder panel then, after a while, it shows up as a Disk Image in the right Finder panel when my Mac is selected under Devices in the left panel.  I can create folders in the Disk Image and copy documents to those folders, at least.
But in any case, regardless of whether I open the 220G Disk Volume or the 215 Disk Image in the Finder, the Disk Volume never appears in Disk Utility so there is no possibility of reformatting it.  The 215 Disk Image has sometimes shown up in Disk Utility (and once it apparently allowed me the option of partitioning the Disk Image into further Disk Images), but sometimes it doesn't show up and I haven't been able to figure out why it does or doesn't.
I find this all very confusing and the Finder and Disk Utility behavior seems downright erratic.  I'm not sure whether something is broken or if I just don't understand how it works (starting with the difference between the Devices and Shared headings in the left Finder Pane).  I would appreciate any advice on how I can reliably access the Time Capsule disk volume in the Finder and Disk Utility.  Thanks.

Same problem after 10.8.2 update yesterday,
Time Machine functions but disk does not mount in finder.
The disk also shows up in disk utility when TM is running
as mounted (beneath a sparse image file) but not visible.
Is this a bug, or a feature?

  • Time capsule does not appear in the finder.

My time capsule appears in airport utility. It is ready to go. I have it on ethernet because airport isn't a very powerful wireless router. The time capsule does not appear in the finder. It does not appear in the disc utility. It does not appear in time machine. The airport utility will do factory resets, get it ready for internet, whatever. The rest of my net work can not see it.
I have done the finder preferences. I have restarted the computer, jiggered the sharing preferences, done factory resets, tried to find sparce bundles and sparse bundles, reset the finder, force quit finder, tried to find finder plsts, trawled the discussion pages, tried to find server addresses and apple ids. Nothing seems to work.
Time capsule never seems to work as smoothly as it supposed to. I shudder to present my problems to apple support because I know that its a long road and will probably end in tears. But here I am, naked before this disappointing edifice.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

What is the make and model number of your modem?
I have a microwave modem on my roof. I don't think that has anything to do with this. I am not using my airport for a wireless router, only as a time capsule connected by ethernet. The Airport Utility calls my airport : Airport Extreme 802.11 ( 1st Generation )
Is the Time Capsule acting as your main router or is another device handling those services?
No, I have a lyncsis router. The wireless router function on airports doesn't seem to work very well. I don't think thats a problem with mine. My brothers have gone with lyncsis as well.
Was the Time Capsule visible in the Finder before, and is now "lost", or has it never appeared in the Finder?
It appeared on my previous laptop. That died. Now I have an imac. The airport has never appeared on the imac.
Thanks for trying to help so quickly

Just upgraded to Yosemite and the Time Capsule appears as a shared device in Finder, but does not appear in AirPort Utility.  Any solution to this so I can manage my Time Capsule again?

  • Hi I am trying to connect a new mac to an existing time capsule but Airport Utility is just not picking it up. What am I missing?

I have tried to connect the new mac to an existing time capsule both directly through ethernet and through wifi. Both times I get Internet connection OK but Airport Utility is stuck searching for the base station. I have two existing macs which are connected fine and have both been backing up quite happily. The first two macs are the same user (me) and the new one is for a different user in the house. All the macs are running Mavericks.
I have tried rebooting the time capsule and the new mac - didn't help.
Any information as to what I can try would be most welcome.
    Many thanks

    Hi All
I have solved my problem! It was the old chestnut the firewall issue. We have McAfee firewalls on our machines and the wifi network was set up as a public rather than a home network. I changed it to Home or Work and het presto the time capsule appeared. I didn't have this problem with the other machines at all.
    I hope this helps someone!!

  • OS 10.8.2 - time capsule backup disk cannot be found

I updated to OSX 10.8.2 last night and now my Time Capsule cannot be found even though my wireless connection to the Time Capsule is fine and the Time Capsule appears in the Finder.
    Anyone havng similar issues?

I've had this problem a few times with two MacBooks on OS X 10.8.2. I had to restart the Time Capsule the first few times to get the backup to execute. Last time it happened, I ejected the time capsule from the finder window. It didn't disappear, but seemed to refresh. I activated the time capsule "back up now" and it worked fine. Might give one of these a try.
