Time Capsule as a Back up and Hard Drive Storage

HI
I want to use my TC as the back up location and also as a hard drive on the Network. I know this can be done but do i need create folders, or partition or anything? Or will it just happen that the back up is in a folder and I can create folders to store other stuff? It is the 1 TB version
Thanks

The HDD inside the Time Capsule enclosure cannot be partitioned. Just create new folders and move/copy files over.

Just use the archive utility on the disk page of the airport utility manual setup..
If you have lion and v6 airport utility.. it missed out. On lots of things.

    Hi Philjp,
If you are having issues connecting to your Airport Time Capsule, even after a factory reset, you may find the following article helpful:

  • After I configure my time capsule to my newly replaced macbook hard drive, are my old backups still available?

After I configure my time capsule to my newly replaced macbook hard drive, are my old backups still available?

How old was this backup? It sounds like it was at least several weeks old.
You can look directly in the TM backup for the music.
    1. Connect to the external HDD the backup is kept on.
    2. Open a Finder window and select the backup drive in the left hand panel. Double click into the folders until you see a list of folders with dates.
These are the incremental backups. You can start at the top or the bottom of the list but I suggest you double Latest/<HDD Name>/Users/<Account Name>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music. From this location you can start looking for the "missing" music. When/if you find it you can simply drag-n-drop to ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music on the internal HDD.
If the music is actually not in the backups (for whatever reason) then you've got a problem.
You can download the uploaded files from the cloud by deleting the affected tracks from the iTunes library (but not the cloud!), highlighting multiple tracks at once, right-clicking and choosing "download."

  • Can the time capsule be used as an external hard drive

Can the time capsule be used as an external hard drive

If you mean by usb to a computer no.. it is a network device only and has to be used via ethernet or wireless.
It can be used standalone,, ie not plugged into an existing network.. but there are some steps required to make it work if you want internet connection at the same time. It is generally much easier to have the TC bridged into the network.

  • Can Time Capsule Be Used Only as a Hard Drive, Not as a Router?

I have been using a Time Capsule as a router and as a wireless backup system for a year, but had endless trouble with the dual use, since my personal Macbook is on the second floor of my house and the router must reside in the basement, where we have other computers. Wireless backups are much too slow. So I replaced the Time Capsule with an Airport Extreme Base Station, which works fine. I'd like to continue using the Time Capsule, but solely for backups and not as a router, and connect the TC by ethernet or usb directly to the MacBook. Can this be done, and if so, how? Thanks!

Hello JohnFrancis. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I'd like to continue using the Time Capsule, but solely for backups and not as a router, and connect the TC by ethernet or usb directly to the MacBook. Can this be done, and if so, how?
Yes it can. You would just need to disable its wireless radio. You will also need to connect it by Ethernet as the TC's USB port is only for connecting it to USB hard drives, printers, and/or hubs.
To disable the radio: AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Time Capsule > Wireless tab > Wireless Mode = Off

  • Is there a way of storing files on both iCloud Drive and my Time Capsule, but not my built in Hard Drive?

I have a Mac Book Pro. I work with large video files, which I sometimes want to save on a Time Capsule - or another external hard drive, as well as the cloud.
I sometime want to access the videos when I travel - and really want a no-nonsense solution which allows me to store the videos on the external HD, but access them through the cloud when traveling - even when the power is down and my external HD at home is switched off (I live in The Bahamas, where this frequently happens.)
    Any Suggestions?

You didn't have a backup of your MacBook's hard drive when it had to be replaced?  If you do look in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to see if the Doman.sites2 file is there.  If it is drag it to the same folder on your new hard drive and open with iWeb.  That should give you your old sites back.
If you don't have a backup then you'll have to do what QTKirt pointed out.  However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the creation of the new site.

  • We bought a reconditioned IMac and time capsule, about a month ago the hard drive died and only left our files on the capsule which could not be retrieved from the time capsule so it got stored as a file on the operating system

Our IMac's hard drive died and we thought great we bought a time capsule to back up the immages and files, except when we had the hard drive replaced the time capsule did not recognize the newer opperating system and would not reboot the files back,so the apple store tech loaded them into a file folder and loaded them to the main screen and erased the time capsule, the problem now is how to load this file back permenantly and watch video's that are stored, when in I Photo when I try to view video content I get a message stating that I may need to download more software to support this format.

If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

  • Want to use Time Capsule as a back up AND external storage device-help!

I know there's been a few variations on this question but I can't seem to find the answer that relates to me so probably being dumb but help would be greatly appreciated.
I bought a 500gb Time Capsule yesterday and finally got it set up through AirPort Utility. I think I've done it right-there's a green light and it's going through the motions of backing up although VERY slowly. It's taken 10 hours to back up 20GB. I've used Time Machine before with an external Seagate drive so I know how to access/check those back ups.
I have a dish on the side of my house (on side of a mountain!) that brings the internet signal into a wireless router and then my MacBook accesses through that WIFI network. I plugged the ethernet cable from one of the standard ports out the back of the router into the WAN port on the Time Capsule as part of the setup and that seems to be right in that I can see the TC and surf the net.
So, now I just want to see the Time capsule as a normal external drive on my desktop and move other files to it so they can come off my Macbook completely but the only way icon I can see if the white one that says 'Backup of...' I've copied stuff onto this but I suspect that was the wrong thing to do.
Finally, I only want to TM to use the TC up to a certain max storage so I always have space free on it but can't find settings to allow me to do that.
I'd be really grateful if someone could tell me how to set this up properly!

No. Don't transfer anything into the Back of... sparsebundle. That is your Time Machine backup.
Under Finder -> Shared -> Time Capsule -> Time Capsule Disk. This is where you can create a new folder to store your files. If you want to see this on your Desktop, via Finder, click Preferences. Under General, make sure +Connected servers+ is ticked.

Since the TC HDD isn't partitionable, you can't really do that. Best thing is to get another HDD for storage as TM works best if you give it enough room to grow.

  • Can an Apple Time capsule be used as a external hard drive?

Hello I have a 4th Generation time capsule and I've had it for some time now and never used it and I was wondering if it could be used as a external hard drive instead of just a back up disk. Also I am planning to install a copy of Windows 7 on my Mid 2011 21.5" iMac and I was wondering if Windows would recognize the TC as a external hard drive and would alow me to use it as such.

It is not an external hard disk.. you cannot use it via USB if that is what you mean.
It is now and forever more a Network drive. You can store files on it as a network drive.. with the following provisos.
    Store files on the TC.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24380694#24380694
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
    5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.
    Q3 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Windows can also use the TC for files. Much the same warnings apply.

  • Can the 2013 airport time capsule be used as an external hard drive

or do you have to purchase a separate external hard drive and connect it to the time capsule??

Under the same network, I do use it as a music server (iTunes library) and files to share.
If you have an apple ID, you can get access to this drive any where via Back to My Mac

  • Time Capsule permanently connected as a wireless hard drive?

I am having an issue with my Time Capsule as a hard drive. I have weekly backups scheduled to backup to the TC, but I find that unless I go into Finder and select the TC and then Connect to it so that I can see the Data drive, it fails to back up.
Surely there is a way that the data drive is always connected, ala my iDisk. Seems a little pointless to have a "hassle free back up solution" when it is far from hassle free.

I don't think that's really going to solve his problem. It sounds like the OP has a regular (non Time Machine) backup schedule, and if his TC isn't mounted it doesn't work. At the moment he has to do what you're saying every time he restarts or his system goes to sleep/loses wireless connectivity.

  • Time machine won't back up external hard drive

    Hello,
Due to my internal memory becoming full, I have connected an external hard drive to store my iPhoto Library.
There is no problem with this however, I cannot seem to get Time Machine to back up the external drive.
It is on the "excluded" list, but I am unable to select it to remove from this list.
    Thank you in advance

Are you using that same drive as the backup destination? If so, you can't back it up. Otherwise see below.
In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-C, or select
              Go ▹ Computer
from the menu bar. A window will open showing all mounted volumes. Select the one in question and open the Info window. What is shown as the Format in the General section?

  • Time Machine attempting to back up entire hard drive again

I recently got a new MacBook Pro. I transferred all my files from my old computer using my Time Machine backup.  But when TM tries to back up my new hard drive, it wont use the old backup files, and instead attempts to create an entirely new backup of the whole hard drive.
In the Time Machine drive there's a folder called Backups.backupdb.  And inside that was a folder with "MyComputer'sName."  Now when TM tries to back up it creates a new folder called "MyComputer'sName 2" in which it wants to restart the backup from scratch.  Problem is, I only have about 60 gigs of space left on that drive and about 250 needed to backup.
Is there any way I can get TM to recognize the original "MyComputer'sName" folder and restart the backups from where the old computer left off?
    Thanks,
    Mike

I think TM tracks the volumes it is backing up by UUID (or at least, some device specific, hardware id), so Tropicoco is right that it will see the new machine as new, and will preserve the old backup for the older machine.
As suggested, as long as you have already restored everything from the backup to the new machine, I would use Disk Utility to erase the backup drive and let TM start a fresh, new backup for the new machine (maybe let it go overnight if it is slow or taking a long time for that first full backup).

  • Time Capsule won't recognize my USB hard drive.

I have a 160-gb Western Digital hard drive in an external enclosure that I use to use on my PC. I want to access the drive via Time Capsule through the USB port in the pack. Currently I have a USB hub with a printer and the hard drive plugged into the port in TC. I can print remotely from TC, but the hard drive is not visible as an assessable drive. The only way I can even see it is through a manual setup and review the disk setup of TC. How do I need to setup the TC to recognize the USB external harddrive? Just plugging it in doesn't work.
This is my first Macbook, as well as first Time Capsule. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If your drive only has NTFS on it, then I don't think Time Capsule is equiped to deal with that partition. Time Capsule will tell you that the drive needs to be checked. If the drive has another partition on it that Time Capsule can see (FAT32), it will set up a connection to that drive. You can tell Time capsule to ignore errors on that drive (eg the fact that it can't deal with NTFS) and the blinking amber light will go away and you'll get the green light.
The thing is Vista no longer has FAT32 even as a format option, you've got either NTFS or their new eFAT which is not backward compatible with FAT32. A third party program needs to be used to format your external drive. For example I use a program from Ridgecrop. Below are its available options for formatting.
    C:\Users\voigtstr\Documents>fat32format.exe
    Usage Fat32Format X:
Erase all data on disk X:, format it for FAT32
It is also possible to specify a cluster size for the disk, e.g
    Fat32Format -c1 X: - use 1 sector per cluster ( max size 137GB for 512 bytes pe
    r sect)
    Fat32Format -c2 X: - use 2 sectors per cluster ( max size 274GB for 512 bytes p
    er sect )
    Fat32Format -c4 X: - use 4 sectors per cluster ( max size 549GB ... )
    Fat32Format -c8 X: - use 8 sectors per cluster ( max size 1TB ... )
    Fat32Format -c16 X: - use 16 sectors per cluster
    Fat32Format -c32 X: - use 32 sectors per cluster
    Fat32Format -c64 X: - use 64 sectors per cluster
    Fat32Format -c128 X: - use 128 sectors per cluster (64K clusters)
    Version 1.03, see http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/fat32format.htm
This software is covered by the GPL
Use with care - Ridgecrop are not liable for data lost using this tool
Now is Apple equipped to deal with all these cluster sizes. Have Apple defined anywhere what FAT32 is for them?
I can copy a small file to the external drive when its connected to Time Capsule, but if I try to copy a 700Mb movie to Time Capsule, Time Capsule gets confused and drops the network. It not only drops the network but if you try copying a large file from Time Capsule's internal disk to the attached USB drive, even that is enough to hang the machine. So it stops its network, it stops it USB connection, however the wireless carrier is still strong (it just cant transmit any TCPIP)
So is this a firmware issue that they can correct? Or do I have a dud Time Capsule? To compare your situation to mine the discussion must focus around FAT32 I believe. I suspect that Apple's own journaled file system works flawlessly with large files (but as yet do not own a mac to test this). Furthermore the point of having a large external drive is to be able to take it places and share files (which will have to be less that 4gig if I use FAT32) with non mac owning friends. Either Apple needs to support NTFS, or they need to specify or even provide a FAT32 format utility that will work with both Windows and Mac
    Cheers
    The Voigtstr
