Time Capsule as a storage device  AND as well as backup

Bonjour,
Wondering how to use - in optimal way - Time Capsule (TC) as a storage device  AND as well as backup.
Inside the TC backup disk  I created a new directory at side of my may backup directory to load manually some data. Is that a good way to do it? Because  I'd been suggested to create a DISK IMAGE to reserve space for the storage device!
Thanks,
Gil

That is one way to do it as long as you have plenty of free space on the drive
The disk image method is the only way that you can "reserve" a given amount of space on the drive for a specific purpose. As such, it acts somewhat like a "partition" on a normal drive.
If you anticipate that space is going to get tight in the near future on the drive, the disk image would be advised.

  • Can I use the Time Capsule as a storage device for my Ipad?

I want to get an Ipad for my wife because all she does is surf the net, email, and photoshop pictures. Can I get an IPAD and a Time Capsule and use the Time Capsule as like a shared drive to push pictures from the Ipad to the Time Capsule?
I do not want to store the pictures on the Ipad

It is difficult unless you tell us what format the movies are in and what player you are using?
iTunes library will not really work. The TC is not a Media Player or Media related in any way at all.
But if you store movies in one of many different formats that are available and use a player on the ipad that can read and play those files, it can work.
So we cannot help you without info.. what source are the movies from? What format are they in? What player are you using?
    How flexible are you?
Can anyone recommend what I need
In the apple world with itunes you need a computer (Mac or Windows) running iTunes with a disk available to it big enough to hold your library. And some sort of router to connect the ipad and the computer in the network.
Apple intends you to use itunes in homeshare.

  • How can I use Time Capsule as a storage device to play my music from, but get Wifi from a different place?

I have all of my music stored on my Time Capsule, I'm using it as an external hard drive, however, my WiFi comes through my school's campus routers. How can I connect to their WiFi, but still be able to access the files on my Time Capsule?

You can set the TC to join the campus wifi but I do not recommend that method. You make the TC available to everybody in the process.. and it will be super slow. All files to and from your TC, then go via the campus routers and wifi system.
You cannot have two independent wireless connections at the same time..
You can use ethernet to the TC.. this is fastest and best method.. keeps the TC totally isolated from the network.
Or you can use a USB wireless stick in the computer to join a second wireless network.. I recommend using 5ghz as it is much faster.

  • Can I use my 1TB Time Capsule as my external HD AND have it do backups with Time Machine?

I want to be able to utilize my Time Capsule as my external HD because I have 150GB of photos and music to offload but it's unclear to me how to do this - it seems that some say that it can only either do Time Machine backups (that eventually would delete what I want to keep forever) or strictly as an EHD.  I currently use it as a router and for my backups.

Not a good idea to use it for both.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.

    Hi All -
I would like to inquire whether I can:
    1) use a Windows-based conputer to access the internal hard disk of Time Capsule; and
    2) connect the Time Capsule with prower lan devices (e.g. Aztech) to extend the wirless coverage.
    Thank you.

Yes.. but.. Long term storage of info is not really wise where you have no backup. TC is not able to back itself up and you will have issues finding anything but manually doing it from windows.
    What windows version?
Have you installed the airport utility? That makes life much easier, as it adds bonjour for windows and a disk access agent.
Simply installing the utility may be enough. If not open windows explorer and type the name or IP directly into the address bar.
Note.. you should use all names on the TC that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
\\TCname or \\TCIPaddress (where you obviously change to real name (no spaces of course) or IP)
If you still have issues.. check that you can ping the TC.. and make sure firewalls are not blocking it and your PC is located HOME, not WORK or PUBLIC.

  • Can I use the Time Capsule as an storage drive? Can I create folders and save files on it as with a external hard drive?

I want to know if I can use my Time Capsule as a storage hard drive instead of only use it to back up my Mac

    Bravenewcharles wrote:
Ok, so while I edit my files in my Mac that will occupy some space on its hard drive that will be backed up in the TC. Does that mean that I will occupy two hard drives on the same stuff?
Exactly.  That's kinda the definition of a backup.  When (not if) something awful happens, like your Mac being lost or stolen, or the HD failing or getting corrupted, or you accidentally change or delete some stuff, you have a backup you can recover.
What will happen when my Mac's hard drive is completely full?
Don't let it.  Delete things you don't need.  If you can't delete enough, as Neil says, get an external HD for the "overflow" that won't fit, then let Time Machine back up both your Mac and the external.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #32 for more info.

At a guess you have cable internet connection.. please confirm exactly what you have.. two public IPs are allowed by some ISP.. once you use up the two IPs, there are no more..
Make sure the TC is in router mode. And to get it working you probably need to shut off the cable modem.. if it has battery backup remove the battery.. try 5min off .. if not long enough try 20min off. then overnight. The ISP equipment must reset to allow a new MAC address to capture the IP.
If you cannot work it out.. plug in the old router again.. and set the TC to bridge mode.. which I suspect it is in now.. and plug it into the main router.. it should work fine like that.

I am using TM Unifi with an ASUS RT-N18U Wi-Fi router.  I would like to know could I use Apple AirPort Time Capsule to extend (repeater, booster) my Wi-Fi to a part of the house where the Wi-Fi signal is poor
Yes,, if you plan to connect the AirPort Time Capsule to the ASUS router using an Ethernet cable connection that will remain fixed and permanently installed at all times.
No, if you were planning to have the AirPort Time Capsule connect wirelessly and extend the Asus WiFi signal, since it would not be compatible with another manufacturer's router for that purpose.
Another way of saying the same thing here would be that if you want to extend the network wirelessly, it will take two Apple routers to do so

just installed a new time capsule and i want to use my airport express to extend my wireless range....time capsule working with existing devices at this time...but i am not able to get airport utility to recognize the airport express.....????

Temporarily connecting your AirPort Express to one of the Time Capsule's Etherent LAN <-> ports...as LaPastenagure suggests....is always a good way to setup and configure other network devices.
If you want to configure the Express using wireless, remember that the Express broadcasts a default wireless signal with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx. You must log on to this network first....no password is required....then open AirPort Utility to "see" the AirPort Express.

  • Can I use Time Capsule as external storage and not for Time Machine?

Can I use Time Capsule as external storage and not for Time Machine?
I want to just use it like a USB drive but wirelessly and so other people in my suite can use it wirelessly to get the files I put on there. Let me know if you need me to explain some more

Will the Time Capsule come with directions on how to set it up as external storage rather then time machine.
Yes, AirPort Utility will walk you through the setup.
Because when I watched the video on it it says that time machine is automatically recognized
You have to turn Time Machine "On" for each Mac separately. By default, it is "Off". Leave it off if you do not want to use Time Machine.  If by some chance Time Machine is "On", then turn it "Off"

  • Can I use a Time Capsule for ADDITIONAL storage for a Mac Air which has run limited storage space

    Hi
I am looking at purchasing the current MacBook Air but am aware of its limited storage space in terms of files, photos etc.
Was wondering if I could use a time Capsule for both back-up and as an additional storage device.  Ie: would I be able to store photos and files on the Time Capsule that I do not wish to store on a MacBook Air and be able to retrieve them as and when - or would these be deleted after a period of time?  Is there any way of protecting certain files on the Time capsule to prevent them from being deleted?
    Many thanks in advance

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can but it's not recommended, because you can damage the Time Machine structure.

Only files backed up with Time Machine are deleted from your Time Capsule when there's no enough storage. If you store other files, they are not deleted. However, for what you want to do, I recommend you to buy a big external drive and make two partitions, one for Time Machine and another one to store files, or get two external drives

  • How do I use Time Capsule as a wireless router and turn my current one into modem only

I have a crappy modem/ router and before I purchase a new modem I want to use the modem (no wireless) feature of my router.
    Question #1
How do I use my Time Capsule as a router?
    Question #2
If I do this will I still be able to wirelessly back up to my Time Capsule?
    Question #3
How do I turn off (wireless) or the router function of my modem/ router?
    Question #4
I then want to connect all my wireless devices to my Time Capsule making that
the main WIFi in my house. I am assuming this is possible it is I just dont know how to go about doing this myslef without guidance, and the Airport Installer is confusing to me.
    Thanks!

    Question #1
How do I use my Time Capsule as a router?
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on your modem/router to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the Time Capsule.
Open AirPort Utility and click Continue to follow the guided setup to  configure the Time Capsule to "create a wireless network".  Select the "Bridge Mode" option when it appears during the setup. (AirPort Utility will normally do this for you)
    Question #2
If I do this will I still be able to wirelessly back up to my Time Capsule?
    Yes
    Question #3
How do I turn off (wireless) or the router function of my modem/ router?
We prefer not to guess at things, but since we do not know the make and model number of your modem/router, and this is an Apple support area, we have little choice.
In general, you would enter the default IP address of the device into your browser to bring up the configuration pages (check your documentatio on the modem/router for this information, or it may be on the back or bottom of the device. An example of a default IP address is something like 192.168.1.254
There will be a wireless settings page that will allow you turn off the wireless function of the device.
If you acquired the modem/router from your service provider, they should be able to tell you how to do this as well, or if you check the manufacturer's website, they will likely have a support area for questions like this.
    Question #4
I then want to connect all my wireless devices to my Time Capsule making that
the main WIFi in my house.
You will need to log on to the Time Capsule wireless network from each device and enter the password to connect. Most computers will "remember" the setting so that you do not have to enter the password each time that you connect.

  • Using Time Capsule to Wirelessly Receive Internet and then Extend Network via Ethernet

    Hello,
Our modem/router combo is located downstairs, and my computer that i want to get online is upstairs. I cannot get a ethernet from the modem to my computer to access the internet, so I wanted to try to use my Time Capsule to help me get online upstairs (not sure if this is possible...)
My idea was to have the Time Capsule receive the wireless signal and then connect the computer to the Time Capsule through an ethernet so that I may get the computer online. Essentially wireless connection in, wired connection out.
I've been playing around with the device for a while now, and can't seem to make this work. Has anyone used the Time Capsule in this fashion? Is it even possible? If not, does anyone have any suggestions on how to get my computer online?
Thank you very much for any help/input!!

Why not try a pair of these over domestic power loop.

The Apple solution might well need Two devices to extend range.
You would retain your ISP router/modem however would go into settings and TURN OFF wireless on that device - you can do this in the Java Web based control panels on most routers.
Now you sling the Ethernet cable between that router and a purchased Time Capsule device locally and set this up to create a new local Wifi network (Replacing that of the ISP supplied router) . Being a dual band device and being able to broadcast both over 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz frequency base bands simultaneously you could well see improved performance and range straight away.
However if not then you are going to need a further device an Airport Express set up in bridged mode somewhere between the Time Capsule and your upstairs rooms. Your may have to try various power points and locations to get coverage required.
Further Airport Express devices can be added in bridged mode as required to cover blind spots, however remember each additional device degrades the overall network performance somewhat.
Again this will get quite costly.
