Time capsule as access point

I have a Cablecom Modem Wireless Router. Connection to the Internet, WAN
I want to istall Time Capsule as Backup system for iMac
and configure the Time Capsule as a Internet Access Point only, connected to a LAN (Switch -netgear) on one of the ports of the Cablecom Modem.

That is fine.
Put the TC in bridge mode.
And setup wireless how ever you like, but you must be creating a wireless network.

  • Setting up Time Capsule as "Access Point" and not using router feature

I would like to use my Time Capsule as a wireless access point for a laptop. What settings in Airport Utility do I need to make?
    Here's my setup:
Internet -> DSL Modem -> Linksys (wired) router -> Ethernet Switch -> Time Capsule.
    Connect Using: Ethernet
    Configure IPv4: Manually
    IP address: 192.168.1.20
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Router: 192.168.8.1
Connection Sharing: Off - Bridge Mode

    Follow up to my question.
Got my laptop to access the internet via the Time Capsule. How? By having my ethernet switch connected to the WAN port of the Time Capsule - not the LAN port.
Internet ->DSL Modem -> Ethernet Switch -> Time Capsule (WAN port)
I noticed that makes it so computers on my wired LAN can't use 'Airport Utility' to access the Time Capsule. I have to move the ethernet cable from the ethernet switch to a Time Capsule LAN port, in order for my wired LAN computers to see my Time Capsule.
Is there a way, so I don't have to unplug from the Time Capsule WAN - to LAN port?

  • I receive a not connected to the internet message several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via cable modem.. When I input my password to enter network preferences, the connection re-establishes.

I receive a "not connected to the internet message" several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via a cable modem. Software/firmware is up to date on the iMac (OSX 10.6.8)  and Tme Capsule(7.5.2). Browser is Safari 5.1.
When I input my password at the prompt to enter network preferences, all the lights go green (ie... ethernet, ISP etc.) and the connection re-establishes immediately and states "the connection appears to be working normally".
It more of a nuisance than anything and seems to have started ocurring over the past couple of months. I also have a windows XP box also connected to the same cable modem that I never have internet connectivity issues with. I've verified all the physical aspects of the connections and can't see any evidence of any actual drops in the modem logs. I suspect it is just an intermittent communication loss between the Imac and the Time Capsule, but I am not very familiar with Mac equipment yet.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem and what you did (if anything) to resolve it?
    Thanks.

The AirPort Express will connect to your existing wireless network if the network is using WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security settings.
So, it can join the network as a client and then provide an Ethernet signal to your Time Capsule.
Be sure to configure the Time Capsule to operate in Bridge Mode so that it will be operating on the same network.

Can documents saved on my time capsule be accessed if not connected i.e. I am away from home and want to access documents saved on my time capsule

Yes, if you setup one of the methods.. see
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3413
You must use a Mac for any of those.. if you want to use some other OS tell us.

  • Can i store my movies on the time capsule and access to watch on my new ipad?

can I store my movies on the time capsule and access wireless to watch on my new ipad?

TC is not a media player.. it has no smarts whatsoever.
If you have an app on the ipad to play files.. then the ipad can play files from anywhere.. even the TC.. but the TC contributes nothing. Do not move your itunes library to the TC.. that is asking for trouble.

  • Time Capsule Remote Access [HELP]

So like the title says I want to have access to my Time Capsule from anywhere.
I'd like someone to post a [HowTo] Step by Step.
    I have:
MB Pro with Lion OSX 10.7.4 (Airport Utility 6.1 and 5.6)
TC with FW 7.6.1 (Bridge Mode)
    T-Home Speedport W 504V configured as a DSL-Modem
TC is connected to the Speedport.
I've read many things but they make everythin more complicate.
I also tried to activate NAT-PMP with a public IP so that I can Share Disk over WAN, but the program tells me that
DHCP Staraddress and Endaddress are in conflict with my WAN-IP-Address.
So at the moment I'm using the Bridge Mode.
Also iCloud "Back to my Mac" tells me NAT-PMP or UPnP isn't activated on my router.
So please give me some help with this stuff so I can get access from an extern network.
And if I try to do it on Airport Utility 6.1 it tells me Double NAT.
    Regards
    Khanh Duy

I don't have a howto step by step sorry.. I refuse to use OS with as bad a Networking as Lion.. and no interest in clouds..
You can do this without icloud at all. And it is simple if you have a static public IP address.
Even without static public IP you might do ok with the modem you have.
So let me suggest 3 possibles..
    1. If you want to continue down the icloud road.. the issue is upnp .. did you turn on upnp in the modem.. if not do so and try it. TC should be bridged.
Or if you ISP allows pppoe authentication then bridge the modem and use the pppoe client in the TC.. this is a better method as then the TC gets the public IP on its WAN port. You can select to allow disk access from WAN. Although if this is necessary or not from iCloud I have no idea.
    2. With a static public ip, simply port forward AFP to the TC ip address. I will not post the details unless you do have a static public IP because most people don't. TC is in bridge.
    3. Use dyndns client in the modem.. Here again you will have to check if that facility is in the modem.. again the TC is in bridge.. port forward AFP to the IP of the TC. The router has to control this using a fixed IP to the TC.
In both the case 2 or 3, you access the TC remotely by simply using its IP address or URL. In finder, go, go to server and type in AFP://PublicIPaddress or AFP://TCdyndnsaddress
If you just google for "Time Capsule remote access" there are hundreds and thousands of posts explaining how to do it.. but if you cannot figure out method 2 or 3.. I am happy to give further details.

  • Can time capsule be accessed remotely

Can time capsule be accessed remotely? Via macbook pri on another wifi network

Just google for this one.. there are loads of video on utube etc..
The answer is yes.. but it depends as all things do..
BTMM and iCloud is designed for remote access to TC and Mac.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3486
The TC has to be the main router in the network..
The remote network must not block the protocols required for connection..

  • In order to create space on my MBA I just bumped iTunes media to G drive linked through Time Capsule.  Now pointed iTunes at new iTunes libary on G drive and, even though all music files are there, iTunes can only 'see' 10 albums. Any help appreciated.

    Bit more detail...
Mac Book Air has been struggling for space for a while so I bough at time capsule a) for back up and b) to host my itunes folder remotely.  This didnt' work.  I took it into the Genius bar and the genius there told me that time capsule is not designed for anything other than back up.  Instead I have to connect a G drive through the time capsule's wireless router to my MBA.
I followed his instructions - moved my files from the Time Capsule and MBA directly onto the G Drive - which took a heartening 2 hrs so something must have been happening - and the held down 'Alt' when starting iTunes and selected the new itunes folder as the location of my itunes libarary which I wanted iTunes to 'point at'.  When I opened iTunes only 10 albums are visible now.
In ITunes advanced preferences it says it is pointing at the correct folder.  The files are all cleary there when I open the G Drive folder to take a look.  But I cannot get iTunes to find them.
    Any suggestions?
Secondary challenge - in spite of deleting the original itunes folder on my MBA I still get messages pop up telling me my start up disk is out of space and I need to clear some - I expected to stop getting this message now I had done this exercise above.  I have emptied Trash.  Again - any pointers appreciated.  I am new to this world of 'intuitive' macbooks.
    Cheers

After admittedly only a quick read the one thing you don't say is how you are trying to make this move.  Most people with moving library issues do it the wrong way.  Plenty of web sites tell you how to do it the wrong way.
If the iTunes application is started before the drive with the library is fully mounted and awake iTunes will revert back to the internal drive.

  • Time Capsule disk access SLOW!   2TB - Dual band

I have a Time Capsule (2TB, Dual Band, Firmare at 7.4.2)
Its been working like a dream, backing up 3 Macs for the last 8 months.
I also use it for connecting two or three other disks via USB and then making those accessible over the LAN, and there is also about 100GB of data on the Time capsule disk itself that i use as a dump for files so i can get to them from anywhere on my LAN.
Lately I started to notice EXTREMELY slow disk access, even when i am connected via ethernet (1000 base) - and equally when I am connected via wifi (n)
for example, copying over a 2Mb photo can take minutes when it should take seconds.
i've been trying to figure out whats going on here for a while and so i checked out the sizes of the backup files.. the sparseimages that time machine creates.
one of them was nearly 1TB, while another was around 500GB and the other was around 120GB
that plus my data meant there was only about 300GB free on the 2TB disk.
I have a feeling the slowness could be down to extreme fragmentation of the drive... ??
so i decided to dump the backup files and copy off my other data and do a erase of the disk and start again.. but get this.. i can't even delete the 1TB file ! I have been trying for about 3 days now and it just will not delete.. i get the Deleting msg box and it just sits there, literally ALL night...
i know it isn't just hanging on the Mac (10.6.4) because deleting the other two images also took a long time (but not this long!)
i can't just wipe the disk now because i can't get my other data off either.. I have tried copying it over the network and onto a USB disk connected directly to the Time Capsule, but 3 days later and i'm still copying files..
to put some context into this, I copied over 1.8Gb today and it took about 4 hours...
has anyone had this problem before?? what on earth is going on?? is it down to fragmentation, or something else?? the TC has been working fine up until a few weeks ago when i started to notice slow speed.
    any ideas ?
    thanks
    Adam

if anyone ever has this issue ....
it must have been EXTREME fragmentation. I bought another 2TB external disk, connected it to the TC, did a complete archive, which took around 24 hours... then i wiped the TC and put stuff back... it now works fine again...

  • Can I use my Time Capsule with a point to point antenna?

We have a building about 400 feet away that I would like to install wireless cameras.  Can I use a point to point antenna with our time capsule or is there a better option?

The Time Capsule is too hard to get into. You can do this but the end result will be rather messy and for an expensive unit like the TC that is a waste.
Get a unit made for this job.. you only need a WAP..
    eg http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TL-WA5210G

  • Is there a way to prevent time capsule from accessing ****?

Just wondering if there is any way to block access to certain sites or all sites accessed through Time Capsule.

    Sorry, but no.
You might want to take a look at OpenDNS for something like that.

  • I have a new MacBook Pro, it has a small hard drive, can I plug an extra Hard Drive into my time capsule and access from my Macbook?

I have saved my itunes Library to an exteranal drive, can I plug that drive into my Time Capsule and tell my itunes to access the music from there?
    TH

Yes, but it's probably better to keep it connected directly to the computer.

  • Is it a bad idea to use Time Capsule to access my iTunes music?

I'm thinking about putting all of my music on my time capsule and making iTunes access it through that.
Is this a bad idea for any reason? I'm thinking that there could be a few seconds of delay when playing a song or something, which I don't really mind.
The other thing I thought is that this could be bad because if my Time Capsule fails, then I lose my music, whereas if I store my iTunes music folder on my computer, it will be backed up by Time Machine, and therefore be in 2 safe locations instead of 1.
    Anybody have any thoughts/suggestions?

  • Time Capsule FTP access

I just bought and setup a 1TB Time Capsule that is working perfectly in my house. I am trying to find out how I can access the drive on the TC from a windows machine on the internet. I've setup file sharing and can see the drive from my MBPro using connect to server, but can't seem to get to it from a windows machine either through FTP or windows file sharing.
Has anyone tried this and / or have suggestions?

Ok, here is the response, did not work for me, can any of you others try and let me know:
I have gotten a response back from engineering. Part of it quoted as below:
"From an outside the local network computer you should then be able to access the drive by connecting to the server (= TC) from a Mac with Finder > Go > Connect to server...afp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/ <afp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/> <TC name>/
From an outside the local network computer you should then be able to access the drive by connecting to the server (= TC) from a Windows Machine by typing the following into a browser... smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/ <smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/> <TC name>/
    - xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the real world IP the TC gets assigned form the ISP (this may change if the ISP changes the IP addresses frequently. The customer will need to consult the ISP for that)
    - <TC name> is the name if the TC the customer has set in Airport Utility > Manual Mode > Airport > Time Capsule > Time Capsule Name
Note: TC does SMB and AFP at the same time automatically
Make sure the ISP allows traffic on port 548, that is the one used for file sharing to access the disk fro local and wide area networks.
