Time capsule as back up and storage

I have a TC with 2 partitions, 1 for back up and one for storage. As of this moment if I'm using the storage partition, the computer can't back up. If the back up partition is open I can't use the storage partition. Am I missing something in the TC set up or is that the way TC works? Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks for the quick response. So what you are saying is that with TM is one thing at a time, roughly.
As for how I got 2 partitions, I did it with disk utility. When I set up TC, I did it with disk utility. I chose the disk, in this case TC, and in the tabs menu select Partition. It open the set up window and there you make the partitions you want with the size you want, label them, etc. You must open the security padlock with your id to make changes, but I'm sure you know that. I was using a Lacie external disk before for back ups and storage and did it in the same way.

  • What is my time capsule constantly backing up and how do I stop it?

Even when I have made no changes to documents and added nothing new to my computer, my time capsule still backs up 5-7 MB each hourly backup. This slows down my internet while it is backing up.
What is it backing up? My internet history??? Is there a way to prevent whatever this is from being backed up (while still keeping the automatic backups)?
    Thanks.

Suggest that you download TimeTracker to reveal exactly what is being backed up on each pass.
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
The application is not fancy, and it will probably take 5-10 minutes to load depending on how much data you have on the Time Capsule.
Once you identify the file that is causing the bloat, you can elect to exclude that file from backups if it is not needed, using Time Machine Options.
It might be a backup history for your browser or something similar if you do not clear the history on a regular basis.

  • Time capsule stopped backing up and is saying it is busy

Time capsule issaying it is busy and wont back up?

    Is the hard disk spinning??
Put your hand on it and you can feel the vibration..
If the disk is not spinning reboot it..
If the disk is spinning disconnect all the other computers and devices on the network so nothing else can access it.. wait for the disk to spin down then reboot it.

  • Time Capsule as back-up and netwrk drive

I just got an iMac and a Time Capsule and I'm having the same problem.
I want to use the TC as a back-up device and a network drive at the same time.
The back-up function is working fine with Time Machine, but I can't save anything else to the TC separately.
I can't drag and drop anything there.
I can't create a new folder on the drive.
I can't select it as a save location either.
There must be some setting that I'm not finding.
    Can anyone help?

Hello, what happens when you try to drag and drop a file to the drive? Are you actually mounting the drive?
Double click 'Macintosh HD' on your desktop to open a finder window
In the left-hand pane there should be a 'Shared' section with your TC drive listed underneath
Double click the TC drive in Shared
Another 'folder' should appear in the right hand pane as the drive mounts, double click this as well
When it's mounted correctly the drive should appear on the desktop and will be available. If you still have problems please can you post exactly what you're doing along with any messages.
    Hope this helps.

  • I am using my time capsule to back up and I can not get the green light, what should I do

    Hi everyone
I posted a quesiton yesterday and when I got up this morning the time machine / capsule (not sure of the difference) had unlocked itself!. The other problem persists and that is that the amber light continues to flash and I can not get the macbook to talk to the time thingy.
Obviously I am not very good at these things and I live in a country where I-systems knows about as much as I do!
    Thank you
    Gillian

So you have never actually used the airport utility.. you were almost there.
    You posted this picture.
    Screen+Shot+2013-03-15+at+13.20.55.png
Click edit button on that page.
Voila.. airport utility in all its manual setting glory.
Or install a decent utility.. 5.6.
This is not required but to my eyes.. it is much easier to understand and has more useful tool items than later versions.. which are made iOS pretty picture like.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • How to configure Time Capsule for Automatic Backup AND HARD DRIVE USE

I tried to configure Time Capsule for back up and as a hard drive. I record music and need to copy the music myself onto an external hard drive for speed, so I want the TC to double as an external hard drive, and do the back up. I want to be able to open the TC as a hard drive, to open my songs from it. Can it do both?

I finally figured it out. I am able to access my TC from the "shared folder." When I click on it, I get the "connection failed message." I failed to notice the login button in the upper right -- user error due to my Windows based education. The button is very subtle. Once I login, I can create folders and add content.
I didn't see a partition option. Where is that? Just curious.
    Thanks!

  • Is it possible to set up Time Capsule on one network and then access its stored data (movies) using Back to My Mac from another network that also has Apple TV to play them?

I recently purchased a Time Capsule to store data at my office.  I have an Apple TV at my home that I would like to start using to play my movies.  With the storage of the new Time Capsule, I am curious if I can somehow store my iTunes movies on the Time Capsule at my office and then use Back to My Mac to access the TC from my home and then play them via Apple TV.  Does this sound possible?  We have an iMac at the office that remains on 24/7 connected to the TC.

ATV cannot play movies from the TC, even if it is on your home network.. ATV is a streamer.. it is not a media player.. and the TC is a dumb as a board hard disk in a router.. so it has nothing in it either.
You cannot play movies from ATV without itunes, which streams to the ATV.
If the iMac is running 24/7 then you should be able to connect to the iMac remotely and run from iTunes on that, which could then play movies stored on the TC.. with the following issues.. if you use wireless on the iMac forget it. The iMac has to be ethernet connected as it has to pick up the movie on the library and play it back to the TC to network to your home.
The next issues is speed of slowest connection.
Your download to your home maybe great.. what is the upload speed from your office like??
If you pay for uploads and downloads you will pay for the movie 3x.. first to download it.. second to upload it.. office to net..  and third to download it again.. net to home..  Sorry but it is better to play the movie directly from online itunes store.
If you plan to try and play non-itunes movies over the connection, it won't work.. ATV as stated is linked to itunes and cannot play movie files.
Overall this sounds like you need to think it out a bit more.

  • My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?

My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?  Network is administered through an iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Ideally, would like for the second Airport Extreme hard drive to appear on the list of devices in the Finder window.

    Ok.. gottcha
The problem is network wise.. Yosemite is about equal to tin cans and string.. pathetic.
Here is my usual set of instructions to get anything working on Yosemite.
The best way to fix problems is a full factory reset of all the AE in the network.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg AEgen5 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for AE which is router.. it is a problem for AE which is bridged.. you will need to set static IP in the main router by dhcp reservations or use static IP in the AE which is tricky.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Now mount the disk of the second AE in finder... manually.
Use Go, Connect to Server and type in the AE ip address.
    SMB://10.0.1.2
Where you will replace that address with the actual address. The network resource should be discovered and then it will request the password.. type that in and make sure you tick to save it in your keychain.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
Do as much as you want of the above... not all of it is necessary.. only if you want it reliable.. or as reliable as Yosemite in its current incarnation can manage.
The most important thing is point 6.. mount the disk using direct IP address and not names.. dns in Yosemite is fatally flawed.
    See http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-yo u-can-do-to-fix-it/

  • Using Time Capsule to back up Mac Book Pro and external drive

we're changing our main computer in the house to our mac book pro, which is not currently backed up, so i'm thinking of buying a time capsule. our current main machine is an old pc with two external hard drives connected....one used as the main file storage location and the second as a back up location. the main large files on these drivers are photo's, videos and scanned documents. can i use the time capsule to back up the mac book with an external hard drive connected to it? i'm thinking of leaving all the photo's, videos, documents, etc. on the external harddrive but want to be able to back it up to the time capsule as well as backing up the mac book pro. can backing up the external hard drive be set up to activate automatically daily as I think the mac book can? thanks

This is not as simple as it could be..
Firstly the Mac can read the external drives via the PC if they are shared to the network.. it cannot read them directly plugged into the Mac or the TC.
Also the TC is not really designed to store files.. it is a location for backups by TM..
Read some of the stuff Pondini.. our local Time Machine expert.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    Q3 here is relevant. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
The hard drives would have to be plugged directly into the Mac to be backed up and they would have to be reformatted to Mac format. So you would need to offload the files.. format and then load the files back.. no trivial task.

    4.  What happend when a visitor logs onto my existing wireless router?
I'm new to Macs (well a returning user having started with Mac Plus!!) and not very technical.  Any help / advice will be much appreciated.
    Ray

The key to what you seem to want to do is to be able to get Apple's Time Capsule router to "join" the network that your Conceptronic router.  I believe that works with some third-party routers, but I've never seen a list of those that work in such a configuration and I have no experience with Conceptronic equipment.
You might be better off with a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device instead of a Time Capsule.

  • Time capsule works as router but storage space and all data has disappeared!

I have used my apple time capsule for about 3 years. Suddenly the time machine stopped backing up and I can not view backups or access any/all other data that was on the internal HD. The TC still works as my wireless internet router. Please help me. I am afraid that I have lost all of my children's pictures etc. I continue to get the error "Operation could not be completed. OSStatus error -6602" when I try to use it for time machine. I have looked at many of the "fixes" on here with no luck.

Have you tried the things in #E4 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting?
Your backups are on the Time Capsule, right?
Where are the originals -- on your internal HD?  If so, are they intact?

  • I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for several years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both?

I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for a couple years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both the iMac and MacBook Air? I don't mind losing earlier backups. I have excluded some items from backing up, but since the Airport Time Capsule is full, I can't even begin to back up the MacBook Air.

    On your Mac.......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click on the Disks tab at the top of the window
    Click Erase Disk
On the next window that appears, select the Quick Erase option, then click Erase
The operation will only take a few minutes.
Now you are ready to start new backups of both Macs.  Back up one Mac first, then back up the other.  Do not try to back up both Macs as the same time.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
First check that your device is correctly connected to the wifi/internet (settings > wifi)
If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
If this doesn't help, try turning off some items for back up in a pattern to try to establish if your problem is being caused by specific data on your device.
Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

  • I am planning on using my time capsule as a network and essentially an external hard drive - not just back up, is this ok?

I am planning on using my time capsule as a network and essentially an external hard drive - not just back up, is this ok?

Most users should use the Time Capsule for backups. This assumes that "original" copies of your data are on the computer and backups of this data are stored on the Time Capsule.
If either the Time Capsule or the hard drive on your computer fails, there are at least copies of your important data on the other drive.
If you are asking if you can place "original" files on the Time Capsule, do you have a plan to backup those files?
If the Time Capsule drive has a problem....and your only copy of your important data is on the Time Capsule....you will lose everything.
If you are asking if this is OK, the answer for most folks would be "no".
Can you clarify if this is what you are asking?

  • I have two time capsules, one for work and one for home, how do I set up the work time capsule to only back up my work files?

I have two time capsules, one for work and one for home, how do I set up the work time capsule to only back up my work files?  Also, how do I add co-workers to my work time capsule and wife to my home time capsule?  Thank you!

You cannot have two different TC setups.. at least until Mountain Lion.. it did introduce some changes but I am not sure if you can setup two different configurations for TM.. you can use two different devices to back up to. I doubt this will help you.
You might be better using a real backup software.. superduper, CCC, chronosync etc.
The TC by default is available to any Mac in the network to do backups. TM will sort itself out and put each computer on a different backup. These are kept in separate sparsebundles.. so that is all fine.
