Time Capsule as Ethernet or USB HD and reporting wrong sizes

I have three questions related to these issues.
I'm using my 500GB Time Capsule (2007 model) as a backup drive. BUT, every time I disconnect the computer, it just won't back up any more. It says it needs twice the room that it really needs, and more than is left on the drive. So now I'm trying to back up via ethernet cable by just dragging files and skipping the Time Machine backup. Apple tech told me TC can be used like any other hard drive, but it comes up as a shared drive, not a device (on left panel of open window.)
I've been dragging files to the TC to copy but this is extremely slow (15 hours to copy 5G. Some files can't copy at all, and just end the copying process, completely. This unit has been exchanged once by Apple, is no longer on warranty, and is just doing the same as the first unit. So, I guess it's something I'm doing here.
QUESTIONS:
1. Can someone tell me how I can use this drive as a reliable backup by directly copying files via ethernet and if this length of time is normal?
2. Can anyone tell me if I can connect the TC to the computer using the USB connector. I tried connecting a firewire drive to the computer, then daisy-chaining the TC via the USB, but neither mounted after that?
3. Finally, can anyone tell me how to reliably use Time Machine to avoid the problems I'm having, such as doubling the amount of bytes I need to copy data? What went wrong there?
Thanks
Michele

Hi Pondini,
Thank you for those links. I managed to get the Time Capsule erased and just manually copied my drive to the Time Capsule. After rebooting it copied faster and with the right sizes, so, for the fast fix, that worked.
There's little point to copying the entire contents of your HD that way; that won't make a usable backup; you can recover things by drag and drop, but you can't use it to restore your whole system. In a pinch, you might copy just your home folder that way.
I guess I can't expect it to behave as if it were any other drive. It still comes up under "Shared", but otherwise, it works like any external drive, so that's good.
Yes, a few things are different, being on a network rather than directly-connected via USB or FireWire.
BUT, for some reason, I never got an email telling me you posted, and just checked today to see what's new, if anything. Being subscribed to my own question doesn't seem to be enough this time!! Weird, but, oh well.
Check the email address associated with your profile. If it's correct, also check with your ISP; their spam filter might have intercepted it.
Thanks so much for taking your time to answer me. One day soon I'll need to back up again, so will try what you suggested.
It sounds to me like you need a larger internal HD, and/or an external HD, so you have room for all your stuff, and can use the TC for proper backups. Especially if your stuff is important to you, a good backup plan will be sure you have at least two copies of everything important in at least two separate places. Actually, many folks recommend a minimum of two full backups, one of which is off-site (so you're also protected against fire, flood, theft, and direct lightning strike on your power lines). See #27 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum), for some suggestions.

Can i use my time capsule to wirelessly backup my macbook and its external hard drive, which up until now was it's time machine and storage? How?

The external drive must be connected to the Mac using either USB or FireWire
You must remove the external hard drive from the list of items that are "excluded" from backups in Time Machine Preferences.
    Here's how:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Click Options
Look for the name of the hard drive in the list of "excluded" items and click on it to highlight it
Click the -- (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the hard drive from the list of "excluded" items....so it will now be backed up
Strongly recommend that you do the first backup using Ethenret from your computer to the Time Capsule since the entire contents of the external drive will be copied on the first pass. Ethernet will be 3-5 faster than wireless.
Once you have the first backup done, you can use wireless for subsequent backups since they will nornally be much smaller....unless you add large files to the external drive.

  • How can I use my time capsule with Ethernet cable? How is it also possible to use time capsule as a normal external hard drive?

My problem is that I don't know how to use my Time Capsule with Ethernet Cable, as when I use wireless it is really slow.

Make sure that there is an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on your modem/wireless router to the WAN port on the Time Capsule
Click on the Wireless tab at the top of the page
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to Off (I assume that you do not want the Time Capsule to provide a wireless network since you already have a wireless network)
Next, click the Internet icon at the top of the screen, then click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click the Update button at the bottom and wait 30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart and display a green light
Then, you must power off your entire network...all devices....in any order that you want
    Wait a minute
Start your modem/router first and let it run a minute
Start the Time Capsule and let it run a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time until everything is powered up
If you are using Time Machine for backups, you will need to reset the connection because you have changed the way in which the Time Capsule connects to your network
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Open Time Machine
    Click Select Disk
Click the Time Capsule to highlight it
Click Use for Backup or, it might be Use Disk
Now you can connect your Mac using an Ethernet cable to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to back up using Ethernet. Be sure to turn off the wireless on your Mac before you start the backup.
If you want to backup using wireless, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the Time Capsule and turn on the wireless and connect to your wireless network. Your computer will now backup using wireless.

  • Connecting Airport Extreme N to Time Capsule via ethernet to extend wireles

Hi, I currently have 2 Airport Extreme N and a Time capsule and would like to connect all three together. I am planning to use the time Capsule as the router and then use the other airport extreme to extend the wireless network. I am planning to have ethernet connection between the three devices ie Airport extreme N (A) is connected to time capsule via ethernet and airport extreme N (B) is connected to time capsule via another ethernet.
I have tried the Extend Wireless network option to connect them, but that seems to generate so much traffic between the airport extreme N and the time capsule that the network is not usable. I have also tried using WDS but that didn't seem to work.
The three wireless networks have some areas of overlap but the signal is weak which is why i prefer to link them up with ethernet.
What is the best wall to configure them? should I set them up so that they're each creating a wireless network but with the same name? Or is there a better solution? Thanks!

It seems to me the easiest way is to have the Airport Extreme connect to internet using Ethernet, using DHCP and the Connection sharing in off (bridge mode) and then create a new wireless network with the same name... Is that correct? I have previously ran the apple wizard and it did something weird with the network and then both the time capsule and the airport extreme are serving out IP address and both of them have the same IP address 10.0.1.1. which then messes up everything...
    Any ideas? thanks!

  • Back-up with Time Capsule using Ethernet?

I want to backup 1TB of data from an iMac HD using the iMac's ethernet connection. This is not a first connection to the Time Capsule ; I need to recreate the backup after a hard disk failure and replacement.
Time Capsule sticks to the wireless network, and after 7 days running estimates another 7 days to complete the backup.  Attempts to stop and restart, or change configuration result in a complete restart of the backup.
The TC is connected to iMac ethernet port and on router wireless network, on a wireless "N" connection.
    Hardware/Software:
iMac 2010 model running OS10.8.3 Mountain Lion
    Time Capsule 4th Generation
    Airport Utiility 6.2
Solutions tried after researching various support sites:
Turned off wireless network on iMac - disc drops from network and cannot be mounted using ethernet alone
In Network Preferences rearranged service order to give ethernet priority
Removed TC from wireless network (through Airport Utility); disc cannot mount without a wireless connection, so reinstalled it as a wireless device again
Erased TCs hard disk (using airport utility) to restart backup
Removed TC from Time Machine preferences, and reinstalled adding TC as a new disk
Turned off anti-virus programme (Clam Anti-Virus)
None of this has worked.  Are there ideas that would speed this process using ethernet?

Thank you for your help, and the very useful link to Time Machine support.
Unfortunately your solution didn't work.  I went through the process a couple of times to make sure that I had it right, but I still couldn't connect, mount or identify the TC, but it did lead me find a solution that worked:
    TC factory reset
Locate the TC identifying data (in my case this was "Time Capsule b5c917"); Airport Utility locates the disc as part of the preliminary setup process
Did not go any further with setup, or reinstall the network connection (through Airport Utility); so flashing yellow light on TC
    Connect ethernet cable
    Shut down Airport Utility
    Turn off wireless on iMac
Go to Finder, select Go drop down menu. Go to connection history on "Connect to Server" (Clock symbol on right of display) and click to display drop down of previous connections, select the TC name matching the identifying TC data to connect
TC is now connected through ethernet and starts back-up, recommencing where previously halted session ended, and estimated back-up completion reduces from 7 days to 12 hours
At completion dismount disc and disconnect ethernet
Open Airport Utility and setup TC as a wireless device (using the standard Apple process)
Open Time Machine and remove ethernet connected TC from backup disc list
Add newly setup TC as a wireless backup device in Time Machine
    Test backup using wireless connection
    Success. !
This is not an elegant or straightforward solution, but it worked, and solved a problem that has bugged me since getting the Time Capsule.  Thank you again for your help.
The same process should also work for an ethernet connection to restore data to a Mac.  I have previously used a wireless connection for a system restore, and it is painfully slow.
I hope this discussion helps others with the same frustrating problem, and wakes Apple up.  Apple need to do a much better job of explaining alternative methods of connecting Time Capsules, especially where large amounts of data are involved.  Expecting a wireless connection to run for 14 days to complete a backup (or restore) is just not practical, reasonable, or acceptable.

Connect time capsule via ethernet to Mac for back-up only. Is it possible without internet connection ?

    Hi Bob,
I'm not certain the post I sent was posted correctly, as I added it as a reply to a 3-year old thread. Since this is a recently-active thread, though not specific to the issue at hand, I thought I'd post again:
Three years ago you helped me set up a roaming wireless network in my home. It's been rock-steady and I'm forever grateful to you for the time and guidance you gave me. I'd now like to swap out my AirPort Extreme base station for a time capsule. As I understand it, I should be able to unplug the base station and replace it with the TC without problem, so long as I use all the same settings on my TC... network name, security protocol, password, etc. Given the complexity of my network, I thought I should check with you first for any advice you might have. I don't want to set up a new network or make any changes to the existing one-- with the exception of using the TC in place of the AE. I'm already using Time Machine for backups. As a refresher, my current setup has the AE as base station and 3 expresses hard-wired with Ethernet connections elsewhere in my home. I have a 4th express set up wirelessly to use with my stereo system at the front of the house. All AXs are 'n's and are set up, as per your instructions, in Bridge mode to extend the existing network. I'm running the most updated version of Mavericks on my MBPro. Any suggestions you might have will be, as always, very much appreciated! Sincerely, Phyllis Sommers

I am not 100% what isn't allowed.. but I am assuming you want to spread the backup across the two disks.. internal TC and 6TB external.. this is not possible.. It has to be one or the other. TC has no way to build a raid JBOD or anything else. Nor would you want to as that is the most likely to fail and kill your data.
Let me add, backing up 6TB over USB on TC.. will be the most excruciating experience of your life.. cf child birth or passing kidney stones.. large ones.. being the male equivalent.

  • I have more ethernet devices than my time capsule has ethernet output ports. What do I do?

I have more ethernet devices than my apple time capsule has ethernet output ports. What do I do?

Just to add to Bob's comment.. it is much better to move all the connections to the switch..
Don't leave two connections on the TC and then connection to the switch plus the rest.. plug everything into the switch. The only line running to the TC is to connect switch to TC.
The sweet spot for most people is 8 port switches which are now consumer items.. go into any big computer shop.. buy whatever brand you want.. they are not alot different.. but I have noticed smart switches are coming down in price.. to the point cheap end 8 port smart (managed sort of). are the price of dumb switches a year ago.. they also will have better controls and more details. ie discover what is using bandwidth in the network.. some basic QoS .. lots of stuff that Apple routers missed out on.
    eg d-link DGS-1100-08
I just bought one to replace my power hungry managed 16 port switch.. although I haven't unboxed it .. sometimes things don't work 100% on Macs but most have simple browser type access. Not all browsers work is my experience but something always does.

  • Connecting to Time Capsule via Ethernet

    Hi,
I'm working on a Tiger OS and I cannot connect to my time capsule. I followed instructions in the manual, but I simply do not see Time Capsule on my desktop, and there is very little info in the manual.
I am working off of ethernet, not airport, and would prefer to used ethernet for the moment. I have it connected via LAN port to my macbook pro. There's only one ethernet port on my computer. Does anyone have any advice? I know about about Macs, but dont have much experience with network specs.
I simply need to archive data, but I cannot see Time Capsule on my desktop. Time Capsule is connected just fine to my modem, but now how do I connect to my computer? I've tried to unplug ethernet from my computer, and into the LAN port on my capsule, but to no avail.
I am absolutely clueless as to how I can use this machine at this point??
    Thanks much.

    Jean,
You probably don't have the Network Preferences set correctly.
Connecting The Time Capsule Via Ethernet
Connect one end of a Cat-5 Ethernet cable into one of the LAN ports of the TC (<•••>).
Connect the other end to your Macs ethernet port.
    Open Network Preferences.
At the top change "Location:" to "Ethernet Connection".
In the list on the left "Ethernet" should be at the top of the list. (If not use the Action Menu (gear button) at the bottom to "Set Service Order".)
Click "Apply" in the lower right.
Give it a moment to acquire an IP address from the TC.
    You should now be connected.
    Now begin your initial backup.
Now that you are reconnected to the TC, you should still have internet access during the backup.
Let us know if this was helpful. Next time start a new thread, you're more likely to get helpful responses that way.
    Cheers!

  • Connecting Macbook with Time Capsule via Ethernet

    Hello!
I have a time capsule and a macbook. I used to backup my data with the time capsule via ethernet. Now there was an update to airport I guess and since then the menue to configure the time capsule looks different and now I have trouble finding out how to set up the connection between macbook and time capsule via ethernet. I dont want the WLAN to be used so I want the ethernet be the connecting part of both esp because i want to backup lots of data now but Im missing the setting that said use use time capsule via ethernet. I just dont know how to set it up now.
I have the ethernet cable in the very left ethernet slot next to the reset button of the time capsule and its also plugged in to the ethernet slot on the macbook. But what are the settings for this connection.
Can someone help please otherwise i think my 23GB backup will take 3 days...
    Thanks in advance
    Dine

Open the network preferences and make sure the ethernet is getting an IP from the TC.. you do not need to change any settings .. all you need is network connection.. if the ethernet is working just turn off airport for the time the backup is going on. Once you turn off airport in the MBP the connection will be forced to ethernet. You can do it more correctly by rearranging the order of preference for network connection.. but for now.. just turn off airport.

  • I want to transfer files from a Win XP PC to a Mac using Time Capsule via Ethernet connection.  Is this possible?

I want to transfer files from a Win XP PC to a Mac using Time Capsule via Ethernet connection.  Is this possible?

Sure.. the PC connects by SMB.. the Mac connects by AFP or SMB..
But you can simply share SMB directly from the Mac.. there is no need to copy files through the TC. Go to system preference, sharing, and turn on SMB for the folder you want to share files to / from on the Mac.
Make sure you have a common username and password also helps.
If you have a TC already can you copy files to it via the windows machine??

  • Can Time Capsule handle ethernet & wireless connection simultaneously??

    Hello All,
I have recently purchased a Time Capsule and managed successfully to set it up, doing the initial back-up over ethernet. I already use a BT router in another part of the home to provide internet access, there is also another imac in use in the same home. My problem is that I would prefer to keep the ethernet connection to my own imac for the purposes of speedier backing up (I do a lot of music work) but this seems to disconnect the wireless capacity of the Time Capsule meaning the other imac in the house cannot see it. If I make the connection to my imac wirelessly (so that the other imac can see it too) then backup seems to take an age. Hence my question is can I still use the ethernet connection to my imac and still have the Time Capsule accessible wirelessly to the other imac??
    Any advice will most welcome.
    Thanks
    Nick

Ok, the set-up is basically this.
    1. A wireless modem/ router delivering internet access.
    2. Time Capsule has joined the network offered by this router.
    3. My imac is connected to Time Capsule via ethernet.
    4. Second imac connected to the network via airport but not seeing the Time Capsule specifically. What it does see (under 'shared') rather confusingly is 3 different areas. The first calls itself 'mac' and then a code. The second appears as 'Nicholas's imac' and the third just as my name. The first two say it is connected as a guest and the second always says 'connection failed' even though i'm not sure what it is. Furthermore even where it appears to be connected as a guest I cannot see any access to Time Capsule.
    BUT.....
if I connect my imac to the Time Capsule wirelessly via Airport then the second imac can see the Time Capsule and access it easily. This would be fine but it does mean that my imac (the main one) has lost it's faster back-up times. I also don't really want to go down the route of file sharing since this would mean both imacs would have to be on just for the second one to see the Time Capsule.
So as I say - I just want to achieve a connection from my main imac via ethernet while still having easy access for the second imac to Time Capsule wirelessly without the first imac necessarily needing to be on.
Thanks for your help thus far.
    Nick

  • How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

    Thanks for the additional information.
Unfortunately, the AirPort Utility application in the Lion and Mountain Lion operating systems, which is used to configure the new Time Capsule does not support the older versions of the products that you have.
Even if it did, there are no settings on the older AirPorts to "Extend a wireless network", so they are not compatible with the new Time Capsule if you intend to extend the network only using wireless connections.
If you have the ability to connect each AirPort to the Time Capsule using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, it might be possible to use a complicated workaround to install an older version of AirPort Utility to configure the older AirPorts to work with the new Time Capsule.
If you have another Mac there that is using the Leopard or Snow Leoapard operating system, things would likely be simpler. I have not done this type of procedure to mix a new Time Capsule with older AirPorts, so I would not be able to say whether this would work or not.

Due to the kind of plug used the US power cord is rated at the 125v value.. and legally we cannot advise you to use on higher voltages.. although I have never had issues in Australia.. 240v.
But adapters from your Euro power plug to US are generally ugly .. unsightly things.. and often sit high above the socket and are none too stable.. I agree with Bob.. just go out and buy a standard figure 8 power cord.. check with Apple in Italy for a white one.. if you are going to have it on show.. black are far more common. Or even check ebay for a standard power Apple power cord as a number of items they sell use the figure8 socket.
