Time Capsule as Samba Server + Xbox 360?

I'm trying to connect a my xbox 360 or PS3 to my time capsule so I can dump my podcasts onto my time capsule and then stream them to my TV (without buying an AppleTV... or Mac Mini, which is what I really want). I seem to understand I can connect my 360 to a Samba server, and that the TC can be a samba server, but I can't seem to figure out how to set that up.
If anyone knows how to either connect a 360 to a samba server or how to stream media to an xbox 360 (or PS3) from a TC... I would love some help! I've been searching Google relentlessly, but my time on message boards has taught me I'm terrible at searching...

Although the Time Capsule (TC) offers File Server services for SMB/CIFS, it is neither a Samba server nor a full-featured multimedia server. You can certainly store podcasts or other media files on it, but it will not have any means to stream these data to the XBox 360 or any other multimedia player device via the TC natively.

  • Time Capsule, hardwired to TWO xbox 360's, and NAT issues.

    Hello All,
I currently have an older Linksys WRT54G (version 1.0 LOL) which has been working fine for years. I recently bought my son an XBOX 360 for Christmas and we went through the issues of NAT and Call of Duty, and basically I have become quite knowledgeable on this topic. I recently added a SECOND XBOX 360, as it became apparent that one would not do with three boys in the house (Plus COD is a blast on line).
So I created a second Live Account and got the two xbox's running online stably with NAT wide open on both. This required abandoning the Linksys Firmware and installing "Tomato" on the WRT54G. That works GREAT. No modifications were required for the rest of the network including...
Macbook by Wifi, Minimac Hardwired (ya ya wifi works but hardwire is better), Airport Express (used only to stream music to stereo in family room - from ANY PC/MAC running Itunes...Itunes is VERY NICE), HP printer with network adapter, 5 other PC's including a mix of VISTA, XP, XP Pro, and multiple IPHONES, A Palm Tungsten C, WII, DS and of course the two hard wired XBOXs. NO Problems. The Tomato configuration only required the modifications for the XBOXs specifically as the rest of the network settings were not change after the firmware update.
What am I interested in? I'd like to upgrade to a Time Capsule for several reasons. One Newer wifi, faster, two frequencies, backup space for growing Mac branch of our network, and as the internet sharing router. AND to be able to access the TC from the internet for file access anywhere! LOVE THAT FEATURE. This requires the TC to be the first device after the cable modem as far as I can tell at this point. (any input on this specific feature would be great).
So I want to configure the TC with the input from the Cable modem as the main distribution of the internet. Then from the other NETWORK ports connect to my 20 port router for the rest of the house, as well as to the other items currently connected at the site of the current LinkSys Router (Mac Mini, Sony TV).
Also I need to maintain the current XBOX set up with (as well as Wii) with full open NAT on both XBOXs.
My question: Anyone here currently using the TC for hardwired connectivity for an XBOX with XBOX live running with open NAT for TWO XBOXs?
The issues with NAT and TWO XBOXs is that you cannot simply use PORT FORWARDing or PORT Triggering to make sure that the traffic goes to the correct xbox. The XBOX uses specific communication ports and the ROUTER needs to keep the traffic flowing properly or you get disconnected or never get open NAT (must have for XBOX live and internet gaming). There are many write ups on using Port Forwarding for one XBOX and setting the second one in the DMZ, but this does not work all the time.
The "Tomato" firmware on the LINKSYS allows fooling the router into giving a 'pseudo static' ip address to the XBOX's by doing MAC address based reservation of an IP number and then letting the DHCP give the xbox an IP address. The MAC address based reservation makes sure that the XBOX always gets the same IP address which for some GD reason must be in order for the traffic to be routed to the correct device. (you can of course use the same MAC address reservation for any device on the network).
Second Question: For those using the TC AND a second WiFi Router to do WIRELESS connection to the XBOX - which device do you have configured as the main INTERNET sharing router? I have read hear what appears to state that the TC is the main router and the other WiFi the secondary. Thus the ROUTING is still being done by the TC and the other wifi device is being used simply as a WiFi Access point/switch. If this is the case would the firmware on the TC allow the proper routing for TWO XBOXs on the network?
    Thank you,
    Mike

The ports are 53, 80, 88, and 3074. Since you are trying to make two Xbox consoles use those ports and you are trying to connect to a server, what you need to do is to use Port Range Triggering. You can't use Port Range Forwarding since it will only set those ports into listening mode to the IP address you set it. So if you use Port Range Forwarding it will only be open/available to one console(the one using the IP address).
You need to use PORT RANGE TRIGGERING. Disable Port Range Forwarding and DMZ. You need to enable UPnP as well if your Linksys router have this option (other model doesn't have this option but it is said to be enabled in default settings according to their tech support).
To solve the lag problem set your MTU size to 1364. This settings will work even if you have one or multiple consoles running behind the router.

  • Time Capsule + Wired Connection for Xbox 360 Problom

i just bought a eithernet wire for time capsule since my my wireless network aint working i got it to work for my ps3 no problom but appertly the 360 is doomed all the way around it ses thers a problom with my ip adress when it seems fine im verry comfused at this matter is ther a way to fix this problom or even get the wireless way back aswell much aprecited

XBox360 could connect to an Express which is wirelessly or ethernet to the TC. You should be able to connect wireless to TC anyway w/o the Express. When testing that xbox360 go to "other." Change security password to WEP from WPA2 if you have to...

  • Time capsule as samba server?

Can I ever use time capsule as a media server? I bought the 3terra time capsule without thinking that could not be a media server at this price.Shoul I give it back? Or wait until you will make it to run as a media server?

It is not and never will be a media server. Apple have locked up the firmware tighter than a drum.. and the TC itself has totally avoided hacking for this long I kind of doubt you are going to suddenly get Apple TV type invasion of xmbc etc.
The TC will not function at all well in the role even if it were possible. It is a backup device that is itself difficult to backup. Storing media is a bad idea on a device like the TC without having some built in rsync type backup function.
If it is not what you want and you still have right of return.. then return it. Most NAS you buy from the big names, QNAP, Synology, Netgear will have Time Machine extensions plus various media players on board.
You can play media from the TC but only as a file store .. not as the server. Eg a WD live will play media from the TC no issues.. It is the WD live of course that is the media player. So TC is just a network hard disk.
If you are using a windows network.. with no Mac's in sight.. TC is the wrong product for sure. It is brilliant for Mac with Time Machine.. although the 3TB is overpriced IMHO.. the 2TB is much better value.

  • Time Capsule problems with the xbox 360

Im not going to type this all out again so i'll give you guys the link to my unanswered post on mac rumors.
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=448296
    Can anyone help?

Excellent. I did contact my ISP and cross-referenced their list with the bestselling cable modems on Amazon.com. Looks like the Motorola SB5120 Surfboard modem works great. It also has an ethernet port and cable so I guess that'll connect easily to Time Capsule since you said I only need an ethernet cable.
I guess I might have to make sure the initial setup goes good, in which case I might be back here to make sure I did that right.
Thanks for the help though. At least I'll know that I'll have the right hardware that works with everything I have.

  • Can i use my time capsule as ftp server

    Hello to everyone,
resently I have read in the net that it is possible to set the time capsule as ftp server and also as a local server.
Can enyone explain me how to do it pracally?
Thank to people hwo will help in advance.

You heard wrong.. there is no ftp server in the TC..
It can do SMB to windows and AFP to apple.. and that my friend is that.
If you load files onto the TC you can access them remotely only via AFP.. google search remote access time capsule.

  • Can I use Time Capsule for a server ?

    hi,
i was wondering if I can use Time Capsule for a server.
Let's say I have an ubuntu server, and I'm running some websites and web applications on it.
I would install these appications on ubuntu but then store the "file folders" of each website or application (with images, videos, etc.. ) on Airport capsule and leave only the application files on the server.
    Is this feasable ?
    Thanks
    Patrick

    Welcome to the discussions!
    +Is this feasible ?+
Feasible, yes. Practical, no...unless you are willing to put up with very slow access to files that are on the Time Capsule.
Keep in mind that the Time Capsule was designed primarily for Time Machine backups, not as a media server for quick access to data. You might want to explore other options that would allow much faster access to files when you need them.

  • Time Capsule support for multiple XBoxes?

I've read many posts about how to configure Airport Extreme and Time Capsule devices to support XBox Live, but they all focus on configuring network traffic to support a single XBox by forwarding ports to a static or reserved IP address for the XBox.
My kids have 3 XBoxes in the house, so port forwarding won't work. My Netgear supports Port Triggering and works great, but I *really* want to get rid of it and just use my Time Capsule.
Anyone supporting multiple XBoxes on their Airport Extreme or Time Capsule network?
I should note that my home is wired, not wireless, in case that makes a difference.
    Thanks!

How did you set up SMB? I am trying to get a Windows machine to backup to a TC and it does not seem to recognize the drive.

  • TS4104 I am receiving the following error message: There was a problem connecting to the server "Diane's Time Capsule" - check the server name or IP address, then try again.

I am receiving the following error message: There was a problem connecting to the server "Diane's Time Capsule" - check the server name or IP address, then try again.

This might just be a typical Mountain Lion network glitch..
Reboot the TC.. that is usually enough to fix it.
Otherwise restart the whole network from off.. Reboot items in correct order.
    Modem.. TC.. computer. 2min gap.
Tell us if that doesn't fix it.

  • Time Capsule: HD readable for Xbox and 'outside'?

    Hi,
I just bought a Time Capsule (TC). Very nice design and my 4th Apple product (that in 6 months!). Anyway, before I got a TC I had a Linksys router. This router had a web interface so I could connect to it from outside home (let's say work). Is this possible with a TC too? Maybe for reading files too from the harddrive (kind of like a server (wouldn't that be very cool?))?
Furthermore, I have a Xbox 360. Is it possible to read TC's harddrive from my Xbox so I can store my Music on there? Or is this only possible with an USB connection only?
Last thing, how is the TC's harddrive formatted? HFS or FAT?
    That's it for now..

    1. Yes, you can enable sharing over WAN and can access the Time Capsule via AirPort Utility over the internet and can access the hard drive using afp://
    2. I believe so, but you have to install some special program to do so. I'd suggest looking on the web for Xbox Media Sharing as I saw some forums related to accessing music, videos, etc. on the Xbox from Time Capsule.
    3. FAT 32

  • Time Capsule vs. samba-client (Fedora)

I've been using a 1GB Time Capsule for various things, including backing up my Linux server using the samba-client package. This had all been working well... until last night's scheduled backup.
+Note: "Type40" is the name of my Time Capsule (either you get it, or you don't).+
    *mount -t cifs //Type40/root /smb/Type40/root*
*mount error 13 = Permission denied*
*Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)*
After I reset the password (I hadn't changed it myself), the error changed.
    *mount -t cifs //Type40/root /smb/Type40/root*
*retrying with upper case share name*
*mount error 6 = No such device or address*
*Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)*
I tried a number of variants, and finally found one that worked.
    *mount -t cifs //Type40/Shared /smb/Type40/Shared*
I still don't know why the original command suddenly stopped working, so now I've modified my backup script to dump its files below /smb/Type40/Shared/Users/root/{servername} instead of what previously worked as /smb/Type40/root/{servername} .
At least it works again. :-P Here's the software versions involved at this point:
    Mac OS X: 10.5.3
    AirPort Utility: 5.3.2
    Time Capsule Version: 7.3.1
    Fedora Core release 5 (Bordeaux)
    kernel-2.6.20-1.2320.fc5
    samba-client-3.0.24-7.fc5

I am having exactly the same issue with 7.4.2 on a 500Gb model. Intermittent connectivity and sometimes complete disappearance from the workgroup.

  • Accessing time capsule with osx server and vpn

i have apple server and a time capsule that i use as harddisk. Now I want to access the time capsule by VPN. I cannot make an accesspoint of my time capsule.
When I turn off file sharing on the time capsule and turn it on on the server then i cannot access my files locally.

    Sorry, have to disagree.
I have a time capusle and its in the hfs+ and my vista pc reads it fine.
You do need to download the airport software for windows from apple downloads. Install that and then, windows can see it fine under networking. Then to map a drive letter, just navigate to your time capsule in windows then right click on the share and give it a drive letter.
Or you can use the cd that came with your time capsule in your windows pc and it will install the client from there.

  • Time Capsule as a server grade network attached storage?

Can anyone comment on the performance of the TC as a network attached storage? Like Read/write speeds? Exactly how server-grade is a hard drive in the TC? They say it's SATA but that's about it.
I am in need of a high speed storage solution for my home network and was considering the Time Machine.

Here's a CNET review of the 500 GB Time Capsule. I think you'll find all the information you're looking for:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/network-storage/apple-time-capsule-500gb/4505-3382_7-328 18588.html
As for the server grade issue, I know that the 500 GB uses a server grade hard drive, but the 1 TB version uses one that's not classified as server grade. Although Apple has clarified that their classification of server grade refers to mean time between failures.

  • Need help Using Time Capsule As Media Server

New time capsule owner was wondering if someone could help me set it where i can put all my digital media, Itunes, Dvd-rips on to the TC and use it as a Media Server.
    Thanks for your help fellas

You will need to run media server on a PC / Mac and use TC as NAS that stored your media files.

  • Time Capsule and Exchange server 2010.

I want to Buy an time capsule 2tb and make this the hard of my network.
I' am running my own Windows 2011 small business server and I'am using Exchange to sync my e-mail to our iphones, iPad and MacBook. The router I want to replace is an linksys wrt54g. I'am forwarding ports 80 (http) and 443 (https) to internet so we can sync our mail when we are on the road. But when we are at home we also need to connect localy to the Exchange server. In the wrt54g I have an selection box:      Filter Internet NAT Redirection .
This means: This  feature uses Port Forwarding to prevent access to local servers from your local networked computers.
I have unchecked this box so  I can connect the Exchange server from both wan and lan.
Is this also posible with the time capsule (to connect to these ports via lan and wan)? This will be the only thing that is keeping me from buying one now.
Ps. I only use the Exchange server for personal use so i don't need an full firewall.
    Thanks,
    Alexander

You can certainly forward the ports.. any router can do that.
I am not too sure what your second part means.. as long as you access the server on its local lan address you will have no issues.. but if you try and access it via the the full url address it will fail. The TC AFAIK has no NAT loopback. A quick google says no such luck.
What is the function of the TC in the network because there might be alternative boxes that work better??
