Time Capsule assigns wrong IP to Macbook Pro upon wake

Hi,
This is driving me nuts, I hope someone can help.
First off: I have latest OS 10.5.7, Airport, and Time Capsule updates available today. This problem has been occurring since before 10.5.7 came along, and before the last Time Capsule firmware update too.
Time Capsule is running in 5ghz N-only mode. The IP 10.0.1.37 is reserved/assigned by MAC address for the MBP.
About 40% of the time when I open the lid of the MBP to wake it, I have no internet access but can access the Time Capsule disk. When this happens, I check the IP of the MBP and it is assigned 10.0.1.101 which is incorrect. If I click the "renew DHCP" button from the TCP/IP tab in Network Settings, it immediately re-assigns 10.0.1.37 to the MBP and then internet works fine.
I previously did not have a static IP assigned to the MBP and it had the same problem.
I have tried both lengthening and shortening the DHCP lease time but still have this problem.
We have a black MacBook running the same OS purchased at the same time that does not experience this problem at all, and does not have an assigned IP.
An Airport Express with Xbox 360 attached is also on the TC wireless network with no problems.
I believe this issue started happening when I switched from N/G-compatible mode to N-only mode. I don't want to slow it back to G-compatible if possible.
I welcome your suggestions. Thanks.

Time Capsule has now been assigning the MBP IP 10.0.1.105 now.
No one has any ideas on this?

  • Time capsule not accessible to my MacBook Pro.

    Hello.
My time capsule is not accessible to my MacBook Pro.
I have tried restarting the time capsule, checked it's connexions & pushing a pin in the back to re-set it. The light on the front is flashing orange.
    Unsure of my next step.
    Thank you for any assistance.

Plug the TC into the MBP by ethernet.
Press and hold the reset until the TC flashes rapidly and redo the setup.
This time use short names, no spaces, pure alphanumeric for everything.. give a different name to 5ghz as well.
    So for example
    TC name. TC
    TC 2.4ghz TC24ghz
    TC 5ghz TC5ghz
    Hard disk name.. TCdata
Fix the wireless at 2.4ghz to one of the available channels.. 1, 6, 11 (13 in UK).
You can try each in turn.
Set WPA2 Personal security with passkey.. 8-12 characters.. pure alphanumeric.
Then you can plug the TC back into the network.. I presume you are using the TC in bridge mode.
If you continue having issues. tell us what OS the computer is running.
This is not at all unusual on Mountain Lion.. and fairly normal even on Lion.
You have stated Snow Leopard in the profile.. but it seldom has this much difficulty with the TC.

  • Apple Time Server is wrong on my Macbook Pro

    Hi,
For a while now I've recognised that my timestamps on various applications are appearing wrong. For example: My Twitter feed says tweets were from 5 Hours ago when they may have only been from 10 minutes.
I checked my settings and in Time & Date, I had it set to custom. The custom time was correct, and so was the date, however the time stamps were still wrong.
I then proceeded to check the box that says "Set Date and Time automatically" -> I then chose Apple Europe and it states that the time is 23:14, when infact it is actually 04:14 therefore being 5 hours different, relating to the timestamp problem I'm receiving.
Therefore from this evidence I'm assuming that there is something wrong with the time server on my macbook.
TL:DR - My macbook pro time server is 5 hours slow and is making applications give an incorrect time stamp.
I'm on a macbook Pro from 2011 roughly. I did also have a short circuit problem months ago that may have been the cause, I seem to remember that roughly being the time that the timestamps started appearing wrong!
Any help would be really appreciated!
    thanks

Check your Time Zone setting in the Date & Time preference pane.  Also be aware that if you have the "Set time zone automatically using current location" enabled, then using a VPN with an endpoint in another country could cause this problem.
Also be aware that if you have any type of firewall in place on your network then the NTP protocol may be blocked.  In this case your only solution is to set the date, time, and timezone manually.

  • Time Capsule to restore to new Macbook Pro

Okay...I'm pretty sure this will work...but just wanted to make sure before I pull the trigger.
I currently backup my Macbook to Timecapsule. I'm getting a new Macbook Pro soon and wanted to make sure that I can restore my current setup to the new laptop from my Time Capsule backups.
Thanks in advance for your sage advice.

Yes. Check out the following Apple support article: Restoring files from a Time Capsule backup, specifically the section, titled "Restoring an existing Time Capsule backup to a new Mac."

  • HT1175 Can an Airport Time Capsule backup more then one MacBook Pro (one at a time ) ?

Can an Airport Time Capsule backup two different MacBooks at two differnet times?

The title and the text questions are different.
But you can backup multiple computers to the TC at the same time.. the only problem is wireless has limited bandwidth.. so the speed of the backup will be seriously affected as well as browsing or internet usage.
For a first backup use ethernet.. but if your TM is doing normal incremental backups which are fairly small it is no problem at all.

  • I keep getting this error message: Time Capsule could not complete the backup.  The backup disk image "/Volumes/Time Capsule/Karla Laura Smith's MacBook Pro. sparse bundle" could not be assessed (error -1).  Tried restarting etc.  Please help.

    I keep receiving this message.
Time Machine could not complete the backup.

Can anyone help me clear this annoying message up?  Thanks for advance....

The unplugging was of power, if you were unplugging ethernet .. that will not do anything.
    The issue is explained here.
    C17 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
If a restart of the TC is not adequate you maybe in the 2% that has other issues.. please try a full network restart in correct order.. with everything off.. modem.. then TC.. then clients.. with 2min gap to allow modem and TC to finish boot process.

If you are using Snow Leopard or Lion and have HP software for pre-Snow Leopard (either from a CD not marked as compatible with 10.6 or you recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and had the HP software on your Mac before you upgraded - even if you did a standard uninstall of the old software or installed new software over the top of it) you must uninstall the software using the 'scrubber' option:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
    Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Hold the Ctrl, Opt and Cmd keys and click on Uninstall <<<< Scrubber Option
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
    Restart your Mac
    Now reset the printing system:
    - Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
    - Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
    - Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • My Time Capsule no longer backups my MacBook automatically.

I use my Time Capsule to back up two MacBook Pro's. It seems to work fine one moment and then not at all the next moment. For example, several days ago I was using both MadBooks and they were being backed up regularly by the time capsule. Yesterday and today I've been using only on MacBook and there has been no backup or attempt of anything all. Does anyone know what may be the problem and how it can be fixed?

Just so you know the Time Capsule is a dumb router with a hard disk inside.. It has no control over backups at all.
Backups are handled by Time Machine.. software in your computer.
Time Machine will have error codes you can read.. use the widget to find out what the errors are.
See A1 here.. although a bit out of date now Pondini is still very useful for all the things that go bump in the night in the world of Time Machine. TM..
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
But I can see the problem.. it is called Yosemite.
Let me suggest at least until apple get some better bug fix patches out.. you perhaps move to backups on a local drive, plug in a USB drive..
And to use Carbon Copy Cloner or an alternative to Time Machine.
Apple produced the worst network mess in Yosemite by changing the way DNS worked.
Here are the list of fixes to get Yosemite to find the Time Capsule again.
Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 for basestation and and TCwifi wireless name.
If the issue is wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round. ie plan on a first and second round of changes to fix this.. hopefully.. I will point out other steps that can be round2.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.
Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only. Do the same for ethernet if you use it.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the computer itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.
Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore
Start from the bottom and work up.. I have a list of good network practice changes but I have avoided Yosemites bug heaven.
Yosemite has serious DNS bug in the networking application.. here is the lets say more arcane method of fixing it by doing a network transplant from mavericks.

  • My MacBook pro wont wake up from sleep. The screen is blank at all times, but I can hear the fan for 5 sec then everything stops. Please help! I don't kno what to do.

My MacBook pro is about 3 yrs old. It is a 2008 model right before the new design came out. Recently I closed it up which puts it to sleep and a couple minutes later when I opened it up the screen stayed blank but could hear the fan running but then the power clicked like it was shutting down and I could hear nothing more. My power supply is working and I have already tried resetting it. Can anyone help me? I don't live exactly near a Mac store to get help.

Before resorting to an LB change-out, try this, as it has fixed many of the "silver-key" Macbook Pros with wake-from-sleep issues:
    1) To get the computer running, do an SMC reset. Instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Your MBP model uses the first option under the subhead, "Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)"
    2) If you get it running, go to System Preferences > Network and select your Airport connection
    3) In the result main pane, click the "Advanced..." button.
    4) You should be looking at a window with multiple tabs at the top; the "Airport" tab (far left) should be active---if not, make it so.
    5) There is a panel showing "Prefered Networks." Use the "minus" button below that window to eliminate any networks that you don't need to access on more than a weekly basis. I'm down to two: the home Airport Extreme Base Station and the network for a museum at which I volunteer once a week.
    5) Click "OK" and close System Preferences.
Now try letting it sleep and see it if wakes up.
When this happened to my Late 2007 MBP, I used Console to read system.log and found that, on waking, the compuer was looking for the wireless network at a lodge where I'd stayed weeks earlier and miles away. Clear the morass of old networks and keeping the list short has completely cured my wake-from-sleep issues.
The steps I listed take less time to do than to read, and are within the ability even of novice Mac users.
If that doesn't work, you may need to seek professional help. If you take it to an Apple Store and they recommend a logic board replacement, ask about a "Depot Repair." Instead of replacing the logic board on-site (which will whack you to the tune of US$700-1100), they send the computer to a central Apple refurb facility that fixes whatever they find wrong for a flat fee of about US$315 (last time someone reported using the service here). Turnaround is about one working week, and people who have taken of this service have reported being very pleased with the outcome.
You don't show a geographic location. This service may not be available if you are outside North America.

I am trying to back up my Macbook Pro to a time capsule attached to my iMac. When I first installed the Time Capsule, all backups went well.

Reboot the TC.. it has got lost.. or reboot the whole network.. restart in correct order. .modem router.. TC.. clients.
It suddenly will reappear.. you might need to reboot it again in a few days. .such is apple software today.

  • Can i use my time capsule to wirelessly backup my macbook and its external hard drive, which up until now was it's time machine and storage? How?

Can i use my time capsule to wirelessly backup my macbook and its external hard drive, which up until now was it's time machine and storage? How?

The external drive must be connected to the Mac using either USB or FireWire
You must remove the external hard drive from the list of items that are "excluded" from backups in Time Machine Preferences.
    Here's how:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Click Options
Look for the name of the hard drive in the list of "excluded" items and click on it to highlight it
Click the -- (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the hard drive from the list of "excluded" items....so it will now be backed up
Strongly recommend that you do the first backup using Ethenret from your computer to the Time Capsule since the entire contents of the external drive will be copied on the first pass. Ethernet will be 3-5 faster than wireless.
Once you have the first backup done, you can use wireless for subsequent backups since they will nornally be much smaller....unless you add large files to the external drive.

  • Boot from time machine to start up my macbook Pro?

Can I boot up from my time machine to start up my macbook pro with 10.7.5? I have not been able to start up from my diskWarrior 4.4 disk in order to rebuild my hard drive, and I did not get a 10.7 system disk when I bought my computer. Also, if I can, how do I do it?

If the time machine backup was made from your Mac with 10.7.x install on it yes toy can boot from it. Connect the backup drive to the Mac and power it on. Hold down the Option key and a boot menu screen willl come up. Select the backup drive, it might be label Recovery HD or Whatever you called the drive when you formatted it.
Once that loads, which is a copy of the built ion Recovery HD files you can use disk utility to do maintance and do all the other things you can do with disk utility and then you can restore your system from that backup.

  • What's wrong with my macbook pro (15" early 2011) when i connect it with TV via hdmi

What's wrong with my macbook pro (15" early 2011) when i connect it with TV via hdmi

    Hello Alex,
It sounds like you are getting excessive CPU usage when connecting an external display via HDMI to your computer. I would try the troubleshooting steps outlined in the article named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
    Monitor and Display Adapter Table
About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters
Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
Reset the systemYou can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolutionStart by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling
