Time Capsule & Asus Router

Hey Folks,
My home network is getting upgrade, in that I have purchased the new Asus router http://promos.asus.com/US/rt-n66u/index.htm and the plan is to stop using the time caspule as router but keep it as my target drive for time machine.  I have unlugged all the network/modem cables and plugged them into the new router, and the network seems to be working fine.  I have plugged the time capsule into the new router via USB 2.0 but it is not being detected.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

The Time Capsule connects to a network using Ethernet or wireless.
The USB port on the Time Capsule can be used to attach another hard drive, or a printer.
Ethernet would be your best performance option.
Connect from a LAN port on your main router to the WAN port on the Time Capsule and be sure that the Time Capsule is configured in Bridge Mode to work correctly on your network.

I have a 2T apple time capsule and router. I bought a Hauppauge Win TV extender which allows TV to be broadcasted on a PC. The program allows for the TV to be streamed on a Mac, Iphone, Ipad. I need to access the router set up options to open a port on the router to allow this program to stream the TV to the Mac and Iphone. I do not know how to access the apple time capsule router to change the settings to open a port on the router. help please.

Firstly you do not need to open ports to stream locally.. there is no port block in local LAN.. only WAN to LAN. So there is a good chance it is not needed at all..
Opening ports on the TC I strongly recommend a v5 airport utility.. you can download one for windows if you don't have a Mac.. iOS version of the utility I am not sure but it will not work to do complex things.
In the v5 utility go to the NAT area, and click on port mappings.
Sorry I don't have a screen shot at the moment of the actual mapping page.. but simply put the IP of the device you want opened and the port.
There are plenty of posts with this info if you google.
But as noted.. this is purely WAN to LAN.. nothing else.

  • How to set up time capsule with router

I have a router N 300 and would like to buy time capsule but I did not find any information how to set up bouth devises. Thanks

You can always bridge the Time Capsule.. it is easy. Once bridged the time capsule will no longer route. All routing is then handled by the original router.. N300 (which could be belkin or netgear and maybe other people call then N300). It will still work as a wireless access point.. unless you turn it off, a switch with WAN now allocated to LAN, and a network drive.
    Just look up bridge.
But there are other ways to do things. You could replace the N300, unless it is a modem.. in which case you can bridge that and use pppoe client on the TC (if you ISP does pppoe).

  • How to connect to an iMac in a LAN through Time Capsule as router

    SITUATION:
We have a Time Capsule at work, which we use as a router for a LAN which includes 2 iMacs, 1 PowerBook G4, and an HP Officejet Printer.
The Time Capsule connects to the internet through Ethernet, via a Static IP address. All the computers connect to the internet wirelessly through the Time Capsule, and the printer is wired to the Time Capsule.
We are trying to connect remotely to the computers in the office, keeping in mind that the Time Capsule as a router is in the middle.
    SET-UP WORK DONE SO FAR:
We opened the Airport Utility, selected the Time Capsule, Advanced tab, Port Mapping option and added a device, using the local IP address of the computer we want to make available remotely.
In the Port Mapping Setup Assistant that comes up, we ran three scenarios: (1) left the Service field without a choice once and then (2) with Apple Remote Desktop and (3) Personal File Sharing.
In the first scenario, we chose 49999 as Public and Private TCP Ports (we read the figures could be in an approximate range of 42-65k), while we left the UDP Ports fields blank. In the other two scenarios we left untouched both the UDP and TCP Ports that appear as defaults when the Service field is selected.
We hit the Continue button and the Update button afterwards. The Time Capsule saved the information and restarted.
In the Sharing preference under System Preferences we chose Remote Management and clicked on the Computer Settings... button. We checked the VNC button and included a password.
    REMOTE ACCESS WORK:
When we wanted to access the iMac that we just thought we had set up for remote access using a different computer connected to another network, we could not connect.
We used Chicken of the VNC to try to access the local iMac, using the Time Capsule Static IP address and the VNC password set in the Sharing/Remote Management preference in the iMac. We have been unable to access the local computer connected wirelessly to the Time Capsule so far.
    We get the following message:
    Could not connect to server
    Connection timed out: ()
    Any help out there?

The TC is not a streaming device.. it is merely a hard disk mounted inside a router.
That means My Receiver.. whatever that happens to be.. has to be a media device that can play from a network file store.. So there is no settings in Airport utility.. because the TC is too dumb to need to know anything.
BTW the TC is a bad place to store files, as it has no way to back itself up.

  • Airport express vs. time capsule vs. router

    What is best to do?
My airport express is now connected to my router (speedtouch) and works very well.
Do I connect my newly bought time capsule to my router or keep this one wireless? Because with the airport express I can make use of airplay, which I have not connected yet, but would like to do.
I bought time capsule for wireless backup of several devices. This cannot be used a the moment, because I have to make a backup of my MacBookPro first before I update the software so that I can use the wireles backup application with my other devices.
I do not know how to start.
What is the effect on apple tv, none?
How do I get the most benefit from both airport express as well as time capsule.

We always recommend the initial backup by ethernet.. due to the time it takes and the lower reliability of wireless.
You can either do this with the TC disconnected from the network.. and just plugged straight into the computer.. or swap the Express for the TC. I presume you are running the speedtouch in router mode so bridge the TC.. and plug the computer by ethernet directly into a LAN port of the TC.
The above can be a permanent setup.. just tick the wireless can be extended in the TC.. and run the express in wireless bridge.. or you can also wire the express to the TC if you do not need the extra range.
Remember the TC is faster using gigabit and designed for main router role (even if you pass that to the express). The express still only uses 10/100 ethernet.. and is designed to supplement the wireless setup.
But there is nothing wrong with leaving the express as it is now only allow extend and then setup the TC to extend wireless from the express as that will also work well if the required connections are nearby and you can use ethernet to the TC.
I do not know how to start.
Have a go.. it is not like you are going to mess up. and cause something serious.
IMO.. have a try .. do not think there is one ideal. Switch and swap.. the best is what works well for you.
What is the effect on apple tv, none?
It has no affect on the ATV.
How do I get the most benefit from both airport express as well as time capsule.
    Use ethernet whereever possible.
Avoid double hop wireless.. ie any use of extend by wireless and then another wireless hop introduces severe speed lags. Wireless cannot handle Tx and Rx at the same time.. it is half-duplex by nature. Also it is shared bandwidth.. Ethernet is superior in both areas.. every device has full bandwidth and full duplex.

  • Unable to set up my Time capsule as router and wifi base station

I am new to the mac world and purchased a time capsule to act as my router and wifi base station. I asked when i purchased the TC if i needed anything other than the adsl filter i have for broadband and was told no. However I cannot get the TC to talk to the internet or even see the connection. Did i infact need a modem between the adsl filter and the tc? if not what cable do i need from the adsl filter and the tc as the one that fits my current router and works has a small modem jac not an ethernet jack?

Finally got sensible help desk person who answered my query and I did need a modem

  • Time Capsule & Separate Router or Just Time Capsule?

I am currently using Time Capsule plugged into a Netgear Router. Is it best to use a separate router with Time Capsule or use just Time Capsule? I currently have an Xbox 360 adapters plugged in to the Netgear router. I guess I could plug it in to the Time capsule, but I think the the security with Netgear is probably tighter than the Time Capsule. No?

Is it best to use a separate router with Time Capsule or use just Time Capsule?
Unless you have a specific requirement to have two routers, you should consider using only one.
. I guess I could plug it in to the Time capsule, but I think the the security with Netgear is probably tighter than the Time Capsule. No?
By security, if you mean wireless encryption. Then no, the Time Capsule (TC) is capable of supporting up to WPA2 with RADIUS. However, if you mean, does the TC allow fine-tuning of other security settings like MAC-address spoofing, then yes other routers, like the Netgear, have an advantage.

  • Time Capsule + Cable Router

    Hello,
I've been experiencing some problems with my Time Capsule in my home network. My problem is:
I have a Cable Modem/Router that creates a WiFi, with the following settings:
This cable modem is connected via an ethernet cable to my home Time Capsule's WAN port. My TC was configured to create the same exact WiFi, same safety options but different channel (or roaming, as I've read here and here). Both devices are in the same room, 5-6 inches apart (in case this matters).
The problem comes when connecting from my phone/ipad to this WiFi near the two devices. I assume it's because the portable device is trying to get an IP from both the Router AND the Time Machine, and ends getting what I've guessed it's a self-assigned IP (169.84.something) that doesn't make the internet work. After 5-10 minutes the mobile device figures things up and suddenly starts working.
    a) This is tedious. It should easily work. I don't know if there's something I'm not configuring right... but roaming should be working.
    b) When trying to change some of the settings in the TC a prompt about "having the right WAN address" popped up. I figured, as the following is one of the screens in the router config:
I may have to enter this WAN address and subnet mask somewhere in the TC confi.
    c) I am looking forward to solving this because I recently acquired a DLINK AP to amplify the WiFi in my living room and I was hoping to configure it in roaming (same wifi, same pass, different channel) and I would like it to work fine (and not having devices with selfasigned IPs).
Thanks a lot for your time and help.
    Regards,
    Fernando

    Hello,
First of all, thanks Bob for your answer.
I have the TC in "Bridge Mode" (modo puente, in spanish) and the following configuration:
I think it's the correct config.
I also think maybe having the WPA OR WPA2 option isn't good, and maybe setting it to either one of the two security options.
    Regarding my software:
Time Capsule is running firmware version 7.6.4
On my main Mac (Mac Mini late 2012) I'm running Airport Utility (6.3.1 [631.4]) and OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.5.
    Best

  • I'd like to use Time Capsule as Router and remove D-Link Router.  Is that what it's designed for?

I currently use a D-Link Router and also have a 1st generation time capsule as use as a back up device.  I've just purchased a new 2TB Time Capsule and would like to use it as my primary "only" router just after my cable modem, it that there primary design?
Currently I have a Cable modem with a Static IP address and then on the D-Link I've configured my NAS, Power Mac, iMac and Computers with all there own IP address.  I've looked on the Time Capsule I have hooked up now and I'm not sure if the TC will let me do that.
I really should of researched before, but I'd just bought a mini mac with lion server and it talked about the ease of using TC with it and purchased before researching...

I've just purchased a new 2TB Time Capsule and would like to use it as my primary "only" router just after my cable modem, it that there primary design?
Yes, the Time Capsule is designed to connect directly to a modem.
on the D-Link I've configured my NAS, Power Mac, iMac and Computers with all there own IP address
You can set up "static" IP addresses for each of your network devices....IF....the Time Capsule is set up to be the "main"' router on the network.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Click the DHCP tab below the icons
The DHCP Reservations box will allow to you assign a specific IP address based on the MAC address or AirPort ID of each device.
Devices could be assigned IP addresses in the 10.0.1.x range or 192.168.1.x range depending on your preference.

  • Time Capsule behind router

    Hey guys
I was not able to find an answer to my question by searching the internet. So i'm asking here.
I have the following network setting at home:
    - A Linksys router (LS) is connected to the internet
    - Currently the DHCP server
    - A Time Capsule (TC) is connected through wire to the LS
    - Receives dynamic ip through DHCP
    - Bridge mode
    - Some clients are wirelessly connected to the TC
    - Other clients are wirelessly connected to the LS
    - The LS may or may not be turned on.
You may see the problem: If LS is turned off, all clients that try to connect to the TC can't get an ip => These Clients are not able to backup to TC
I want the TC to be able to distribute ip addresses to it's clients all the time, so that a client can backup to TC even if the LS is turned off.
Of course all the clients should be able to communicate with the internet if the LS is turned on.
However it is not necessary, that a client of TC can communicate with a client of LS.
This may sound a little bit exotic, but is there a way i can achieve this?

I couldn't keep my hands of.
    It seems to work now.
I have now the following setting:
    - LS works as before (192.168.1.1)
         - and has now a routing
              - Target LAN: 192.168.2.0
              - Mask: 255.255.255.0
              - Gateway: 192.168.1.2
    - TC
          - has "external" static ip 192.168.1.2 in the LS network
         - has "internal" static ip 192.168.2.1 in its own network
         - acts as DHCP server in it's own network
I also needed to set the ISP DNS servers manually for the TC. Before setting a static ip for the TC it received the addresses automatically (from LS?).
Is it ok to manually enter these DNS addresses into TC?
How often do they change? If they "never" change, then i'm ok with this solution.
The good thing is now, that everything "inside" the TC network can act autonomously.
+ Clients can backup to TC while LS is off
+ Clients can communicate in the TC network while LS is off (e.g. video streaming, file sharing, ...)
    Negative:
    - It is not possible to remotely access TC-Clients from the internet without port forwarding (double nat). This should be no problem for me, since i only want to start requests from the TC network.
    - Services based on bonjour won't work cross TC <=> LS (all broadcasting?). I'm ok with that.
Are there any problems, that i don't see or did not mention?

  • How to setup time capsule as router

This is my first try at using time capsule.  how do i set this up as a router.  i have bell dsl modem and would liek to use the time TC to be the router for wireless and wired connection.  If I setup IP Address 192.168.1.1 will this be same ip address I set for Router Address?  Do I need to change the Connection Sharing option?
    The modems IP is 192.168.2.1.
Under Airport Utility - Settings - Internet:
-Internet Connection Tab - connection using: Ethernet & connection sharing: off (bridge mode)
-TCP/IP tab - configure IP: manually; ip address: 192.168.1.1

You might want to check with your service provider to see if the device can be configured as a "bridge". That is the way it must be setup if you want it to work correctly with the Time Capsule.
You might want to look at this link for more information on your modem.

  • VPN with Time Capsule, Linksys router

We are running SLS 10.6.4 on a Mac Mini over Cox business internet with a fixed IP, and we've been trying to get VPN service working on the Mini through our TC. After some finagling I came across this post which describes the lack of L2TP support in the TC, so we bought a Linksys/Cisco WRV210 VPN router. We do want to keep the TC on the network for file sharing.
When setting this up, it would seem to me that the WRV210 should be (or would have to be?) the gateway. However, it appears to be limited in the number of ports that can be forwarded (at least without manually editing its config file; the web interface doesn't show enough for our needs). Or maybe there is a way to use the WRV210 for handling VPN access, while mapping a range of other ports to the TC and then on to the server?
Alternatively, perhaps we can continue using the TC as the gateway, mapping VPN access through the TC to the WRV210?
If anyone else has any experience with this type of setup, feel free to chime in.

Having tried this in the past......the only way that I could ever get the WRT54G to connect correctly was by turning off the wireless security on both the Time Capsule and Linksys device.
Not sure if you want to run an open network.....or even if that will work with newer firmware on the Time Capsule. I believe that I was using 7.4.2 or possiby 7.5.2 at the time.
But, you never know. Maybe another user has a magic wand.
My opinion......life would be tons easier if you added an AirPort Express to the Time Capsule network, and added an Ethernet switch with as many ports as you need....and the connection will run 2-3 times faster or more than the WRT54G can provide.

  • Time Capsule as Router via Proxy

    Hi all,
Thank you in advance. I recently moved to a new apartment complex that connects each room via proxy.
There is an ethernet cable in each room. IT takes our computers Ethernet ID, puts it in his machine, and then we put the proxy server and port in Firefox to connect to the internet.
I want to use TC as a router in the apartment. I set it up correctly (green light), and I gave the TC Ethernet ID to the IT department. But in Airport Utility I cannot find where I should enter the proxy server for TC.
So, while I can connect to Time Capsule and can backup with Time Machine, I cannot connect to the internet because the proxy server does not go through.
I hope this was clear. Please let me know what else I should tell you.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
I'm facing exactly the same problem. Could you please tell me where you entered the proxy server for the Time Capsule ?
    Thanks,

  • Time capsule as router or node

I am new to apple. Purchased 1TB time capsule with my imac. I currently have Motorola sbg900 wireless cable modem/router for the network. I have read about dropped internet service on these forums. Wondering do I want to set up the time capsule as the wireless router on my system and have cableone disable the router on the modem or use the time capsule as a node on my home intranet?
I will be backing up my iphone and wife's pc and pc laptop to the capsule.

It will then see the disk, I set it up for backup and after leaving setup, the TC continues with amber flashing light
A persistent, flashing amber light indicates that any of the several potential conditions may require your attention:
o The base station has not yet been configured because it is new, or the reset switch has been set.
o You have selected a security configuration that is not recommended.
o One of several other conditions, such as a disconnected Ethernet cable or invalid IP address has been detected.
    (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305101)
If you run the AirPort Utility, it will show an amber circle on the summary page next to the area(s) causing the problem. Click on this amber circle and it should provide an explanation.
