Time Capsule backing up the same amount of data every hour?

Hey there, anyone have this problem. My Time Capsule backs up 5.44 GB every hour. I can't find what it's backing up, but it's apparently backing up the same data every hour as if it's new or changed within the past hour. I'm not changing any data and it sitll backs up 5.44 GB of data every hour. Any ideas? Thanks!

I just exlucded the entire Entourgage file from Microsoft Word 2008. Apparently that wasn't the problem though.
Try excluding Main Identity
Macintosh HD > Documents > Microsoft User Data > Office 2008 or 2011 Identities > Main Identity
The entire Database file is in there. Any change at all to any email and the whole database will back up on the next pass.

  • Time Machine backing up the same amount of data EVERY time

Just upgraded to a MBP 17" and started new backups on a clean drive a couple of days ago. First backup took about 14-15 hours and now everytime it does a subsequent backup it is backing up 5.0G every time.
Any idea why? I have never seen it do this before and I have NOT been downloading/adding anything to my machine. Find it hard to believe I am getting 5.0G of cache data from browsing web sites every few hours.

Mine does the same, except it's "only" 1.4GB each time. It does this even though zero new data has been added to the hard drive (by me).
I have tried TimeTracker as recommended above but it seems to be very pre-beta indeed: according to the log, each Time Machine backup adds 0KB. And the original backup was also 0KB.
The backups will show zero until you click them, or set the Preference option to +*Automatically load backups.+* And the first one always shows zero (you really don't want to wait while it calculates the size of everything that was on your system). If they still show zero, you may be using an account that doesn't have permission to see them. Try signing-on as an Admin.
Moreover, when I invoke TimeTracker it remains on the desktop and can't be quit.
Did you try Quit? Either from the menubar or Cmd-Q?
I have my VM folder marked as excluded from back up, along with three external hard drives. Obviously, something must be going on that I don't know about. Are there are other tools that track the TM backups (in addition to TimeTracker)?
Try the BackupLoupe application, at: http://www.soma-zone.com/BackupLoupe/
But you'll likely have the same problems with it as you did with Time Tracker, as they don't sound like problems with the app itself, but your permissions.

  • Time Capsule backs up the same amount several times

Right now I'm using my laptop and for the past 3 hours, my Time Capsule has backed up 2.3GB. I'm just surfing the web!!!!. No idea of why it backs up the same amount while doing nothing

    Welcome to the discussions!
Suggest that you download Time Tracker to find out what is taking up the space on your backups. Depending on how much data you have on your Time Capsule, it may take 5-10 minutes for everything to load the first time you run the program. You will be able to see exactly what is backed up on each run.
May be a program like VM Fusion, Entourage, Aperture, and others that backup their entire database whenever any small change is made. If that's the case, you can exclude that program from Time Machine backups and do this manually.
If you don't really need to backup each hour, you might want to take a look at Time Machine Editor to allow you to schedule backups whenever you like.

  • Time Machine backing up the same location?

I have recently switched my backup external HD to my airport extreme. Before TM was doing great, doing everything it was suppose to. When I switched it to the airport it was overwriting the previous backup instead of creating a new tier in TM. I figured it was because I switched locations. I erased the disk and reformatted the drive, then I set everything up in TM to work with the Airport disk. Unfortunately I'm having the same problem, it's just backing up the same area over and over. I can not look through "time" it's just stuck at the one image.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Can two time capsules be on the same network

I just bought a new TC and am retiring my old TC. How do I setup the old TC as network available hard drive storage?

If the "old" TC is still setup on the network, it is already configured as a network storage device.
Or, do you mean that the "old" TC has been disconnected from the network and you need to hook it up again?

For your repeating even, I'm assuming this is your Yahoo calendar? that isn't a Firefox issue, I suggest you try to contact yahoo.
For the other issue, try the following:

  • Time machine always backs up same amount of data

When backing up with Time Machine it always backs up the same amount of data each time (140GB).  I am not modifying 140GB of data each day or even each week so why does Time Machine always default to this amount of data?
I would like TM to only backup modified data so that I am not waiting hours for TM to complete backup.  Looking for a reset or workaround for this issue.

  • Time Capsule - Backing up external hard drive connected to MacBoookPro

I've just bought a time capsule, but have not yet opened it, because I wanted to make sure what I want to do is possible (so I don't have to exchange it). So here's what I want to do:
In the past I have tried to connect an external hard drive to my airport extreme, and then download videos, pictures, music directly to the hard drive. The problem was that the wireless ability of the airport extreme and MacBookPro just wasn't up to it - took forever to work on videos, download pictures, music jumps fairly regularly etc. So I've kept everything on my MacBookPro which has now filled the hard disk completely. My plan is therefore to have all the video/music/pictures on an external hard drive connected directly (with FireWire) to my MacBookPro and then have the time capsule back up the MacBookPro as well as the hard disk connected to it on a regular basis. Will my Time Capsule be able to back up both the MacBookPro and its connected hard drive without having to rebuild my entire MacBookPro?

Unfortunately, Time Machine will not back up a non-HFS+ formatted drive. If it's important to have TM back them up, you need to format it to HFS+. You will then need to pick up a third party app such as MacDrive for the PCs to read the HFS+ drive. If this is the route you want to go, you will have to move the data off, re-partition to GUID and format the partitions to HFS+. Or go with a different backup program to back up these partitions.

  • Can a Time Capsule back up another Time Capsule?

I have a set up with an iMac, a Mac Air and two Time Capsules. Now I intend to use one Time capsule to create a Network and to Back Up and the other Time Capsule as external hard drive.
How do I set this up, so that the "Back Up Time Capsule" backs up the other time capsule working as external hard drive?

Time Machine cannot backup another Time Capsule, so you will need to use a commercial application like Chronosync or Carbon Copy Cloner to do this automatically on a schedule that you choose.

My time capsule is losing the last back up and has not been able to back up since.
It reads, "The backup disk image “/Volumes/MY Time Capsule/MY MacBook Pro 1.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1)."
NOTE: I have changed the names of the items to MY.
It has also offered me to back up over the back up of my desktop which I have not accepted.
Otherwise I will have to create a whole new back up (i think).
Thank You for your help, if possible.

Can time capsule back up an external hard drive attached to my imac and the iMac internal Harddrive

In addition to Kappy's comments, the external drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in order for Time Machine to be able to back it up.

I am using Ethernet cable to connect TC to the modem. I am only backing up my mac book air within range of the TC. So I guess it will be OK from your reply. As a trial I did interrupt the back up by turning off the TC, disconnecting the Ethernet cable, turning TC back on. The mac would not connect wirelessly with the TC without the Ethernet connection.
It is not using ISP .. absolutely for sure. Well 99.999%.. absolute tends to be only in maths.
But you did the test wrongly.. I said to disconnect the modem.. during the backup.. not turn off the TC.. obviously once interrupted the TC will not work again until everything is plugged in.. but it will work even bridged for a short time.. just unplug the WAN port from the modem.
The test is moot now.. as I can give you a 99.999% promise it is not using ISP.

Shut down your computer and disconnect all peripherals (keyboard & mouse if pertinent) from your computer.  Now reboot.
If the Mac starts up normally, shut it down again and then plug in one of the peripherals (keyboard or mouse first) and start up your computer again.  If it does so successfully repeat the process, adding one peripheral at a time until your Mac acts up.  At that point, disconnect the last peripheral you added, reboot your Mac and search the peripheral vendor's website for an updated driver.
If no driver exists or the problem remain after installing the new driver, try a different cable or a different port on your Mac.
If none of the above works, again disconnect all peripherals from your Mac, hold down the "shift" key to start up in "Safe Boot" mode.
If the Mac starts up correctly, restart without pressing the "shift" key.
If your computer still does not start up properly, shut it down and restart it while holding down the Apple+Option-P-R keys; keep holding "all 4 keys" down until you hear the startup sound "twice."
If none of the above work Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
(If Disk Utility cannot repair, you will need a stronger utility (3rd party) - Diskwarrior or Techtool PRO)
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.
    Remove any 3rd party ram.
Reinstall Leopard - This will install a "fresh" copy Leopard without archiving old system files but leaves the rest of your files in place.
If you still want to restore your computer to factory level...
Start up from your install disc, go to Disk Utility and select the disk and click erase - to securely erase data click Security Options and Erase Free Space which will entirely wipe your disk, overwriting it with zeros so that no data is recoverable.
To restore read the instructions in the Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard - Installation and Setup Guide  PDF
