Time Capsule backup cannot be seen on new MAC after resetting Time Capsule and changing password.

I have backed up my MAC to Time Capsule with Time Machine, erased HDD and clean installed OX Yosemite. After installation I have to reconfigure Wi Fi, so I reset my Time Capsule changed password. Now I cannot see my previous back up on reinstalled MAC. Neither on TM nor on the Manual search. In finder appeared new disk. I am pretty sure that old files are still there. Can anybody suggest how to retrieve them.

This sounds like classic Yosemite.
What you did is fine.. there is no way to delete the backups via the reset button.
What I would suggest is a new clean setup of the TC again.. use a full factory reset.
Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Redo the setup from the airport utility in the Yosemite computer..
Do not use the recommend names.. use really short names.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
eg TCgenx and TCwifi for basestation and wireless names.
You can also setup wireless password as before but I strongly recommend 8-20 character pure alphanumeric mixed case and numbers.. no characters outside of that.
Then mount the TC manually in finder.
Go, Connect to server.
Type in the TC IP address if at all possible.. it is more likely to be reliable than using name.
SMB://10.0.1.1 (replace with your IP but it should be static.. that is default)
Or
SMB://TCgenx.local (use whatever name you have given it.. plus the domain which is always local)
when asked for the disk password supply it and save in the keychain. Then open the disk in finder and you should see your sparsebundle in there.. from migrate assistant you should now be able to see your backup.

  • HT4500 Support Apple advice does not work; I followed the instructions; Time Machine backups cannot be found, possibly in use.  Right after an installation of OS.

How can I recover my files using Migration Assistant?  Time machine backups cannot be found.
I tried recovery by entering time machine and selecting the files, but they don't appear anywhere; they're on the HD somewhere but neither Finder nor Spotlight can 'find' them.

Have you repaired your permissions? This can be a very frustrating situation which I encountred after a logic board replacement.
What I did was start a TM backup, but excluded items too make it a minimal backup. Make sure you select verify in the TM option before you backup. After the current backup I was able to see the sparse bundle and the prior backups in the Finder. (Check and see after this backup if your oldest and current backups are llisted. If not read on) However, it would not remain seen in the Finder after I closed it. Somehow I was able to see my prior backups again  in the Finder. This time I deleted the current TM App in the applications and copied the old one from the TM. It now shows me both old and current backups for selection.
I do not profess to be an expert on the TM. This is just how I accidentally solved my problem.
I wish Apple or a Apple Developer would make an App for these problems. Someone could make a lot a money.

Yes, it will do a full backup.
and if so, do I really need all the old backups on my smaller external drive?
Only if you want to be able to go back in time to those previous Time Machine backups.  When you plug in the new larger external drive, you will only be able to go back as far as the first day you plugged it in and ran the first Time Machine backup on it.

  • Time machine fails to restore files to new mac

This is really frustrating.  I've probably used TM 8-10 times to upgrade hard drives, upgrade macs, etc.  It's always worked flawlessly.
Wednesday I received my new MB Pro (a maxed out late 2013 that MacMall has been clearing out at a great price).  So in preparation for delivery I made sure my TM backup was current and ready to go.  So connected the backup drive to the new MBP and fired it up.  As usual, I selected the option to "restore from Time Machine."  I selected the disk and back and let it run.  The progress bar said it was going to be about 1-1/2 hrs so I went off to do other things.
When I returned the restore had finished and I was looking at exactly the login screen from my old MBP.  I was ready to go, or so I thought.  The first thing I noticed that the dock wasn't right - it wasn't mine, just the generic one you see on a new Mac.  Checked my applications and it was soon apparent that none of my apps were listed - no Office, Parallels, or a dozen (or more) 3rd-party apps.  Zip. Zero. Nada.
Checking more, my Documents folder was empty, along with my iTunes library.   So I launched Disk Utility and the firs thing I noticed was that there was only 10 GB on the new drive, yet the old drive (and the backup file) is over 630 GB!
I've never seen this before, and so far Apple support doesn't have any answers.

    We've tried quite a bit - here's a summary.
Since I tried first with MA, we decided to wipe the HD and start over, using Setup Assistant.   I booted into Recovery, used Disk Utility to wipe the disk, then download and install a clean Yosemite.  This time I used Setup Assistant when it rebooted, and selected the TM restore.  The SA window where you select what to install showed about 500 GB, so I selected everything.  SA ran for a little over an hour.  When it finished and rebooted I had my user accounts and setting, but again no apps or files.  Instead of 500 GB I had a little over 10 on the drive.  Basically same as the first try with MA.
By now I'm into upper-tier Apple techs.  Next I wiped the backup files and created a brand new one.  I have an "emergency" admin account so this time we logged into that one and launched MA.  This time we selected everything except this emergency account.  Again, MA ran for over an hour, but as before, nothing transferred.
With my tech on remote access we browsed the folders of the backup and were satisfied everything was in the backup.  At this point he advised me that - worst case - I could always drag-and-drop everything to the new drive though it would leave more cleanup than a restore.
I did notice something odd about the backup when I used SA & MA.  When I got to the window to select the backup I had two items - one for about 450 GB and the other was smaller at about 100.  Since the larger one had all the accounts I used that one.  With the help of the tech I finally figured out this was probably caused by my small eDrive partition.
This time I updated TM prefs to make sure everything was excluded except the main partition.  Wiped the backup drive and created a new one.  When finished I plugged the drive into the new MBP and launched MA.  This time I only saw one backup to select, so did that and selected everything to migrate.  According to MA that should be about 500 GB.   MA ran for about an hour, but again nothing transferred except my account info.
Lastly (for now), I wiped the MBP drive, installed a fresh Yosemite, and this time used Setup Assistant to migrate.  Selected all 500GB and it ran for a little over an hour.   Again, nothing transferred except accounts.  In total, I had about 11 GB on the new drive instead of the expected 500+.
    sorry for the long post.

  • Time Machine backup to a HD on another Mac on my network?

    _The short story_:
I want my MacBook Pro Time Machine backup drive to be one connected to my G5. The MacBook and G5 are connected via my wired network. I have file sharing turned on and can access it, with read and write permissions, but Time Machine can't find it. How do I browse for it and select it?
    _The Long story_:
I was out of town for 8 months, during which time I bought a MacBook Pro (OS 10.6.2). I also purchased an OWC 1.5TB HD which I connected directly to the MacBook via Firewire 800 and used it for Time Machine backups. Cake.
Now I am home, where my trusty old G5 resides. The G5 is at OS 10.5.8. The MacBook and G5 are both on my wired network.
I connected the new OWC 1.5TB drive to the G5 via Firewire 800. I can see this drive from my MacBook via file sharing, can read and write to it, etc, but when I go to "Select Backup Disk" in Time Machine on the MacBook, no drives show up. If I right-click on the Time Machine icon and select "Browse Other Time Machine Disks", there is nothing there either.
Essentially, I just need to find that same drive which is now connected to another networked Mac.
The only user account I have on each machine is just a single Admin account. Does it have something to do with creating a new account on the G5?
Since the drive in question is connected to the G5, it seems like the G5 is the gateway (for lack of a better term) for my MacBook to get to that drive. I just don't know how to make that happen, since when browsing in Time Machine for backup drives, you can't select a networked computer and then drill down to a specific drive.

I was hoping to find a way to automatically mount the OWC drive on the desktop of my MacBook, so on the MacBook I selected "Go" in Finder and chose "Connect to Server". I selected my G5 and was then able to drill down to the OWC drive. That brought up a Finder window that allowed me to access everything on the G5. I guess that is just basic file sharing via my network.
I had a feeling that would allow Time Machine on the MacBook to use that drive, and it did. However, when I selected "Back Up Now", it appears to create a new backup, not just the usual incremental backup that you get after the first time you use Time Machine.
I am closer, but clearly don't have the full solution. I was hoping Time Machine would see that drive as the same one it had been using (since it is), but obviously it wants to start a backup from scratch, so to speak.
    Ideas?

  • Can I keep backups when migrating to a new Mac?

I have an existing Mac with several years of backups in Time Machine. I've bought a new Mac. I'm going to use Setup Assistant to migrate everything from the old Mac to the new Mac (directly, not through Time Machine), and will retire the old Mac. Will I then have access to the old backups on my new Mac, or are the backups tied to a particular computer?

Macs with a FireWire port will also boot happily from an External drive. You don't even need to open the MacBook.
Some users buy a drive they would like to have as a future Internal drive, and also buy an external enclosure. They get the External set up the way they want it, then swap with the Internal drive.

No, it won't revert to the prior OS X but you you may have third party apps installed that were compatible with Lion that may not be compatible with Mountain Lion.

Could you please help me? I have a lot of Keynote shows, and I have to use it now!!
I have saved a crash report, if you need it.

Apple will not write back to you. Telephone using the Apple Care phone number appropriate for your country and ask for a refund, if that is what you want to do.
I use Keynote everday, it does exactly what it says it will do,  that is if your NOT using Mountain LIon.
    There are many applications available
I have used MS PowerPoint professionally for many years on both Windows and Mac, I can assure you it can do everything that Keynote can do and very much more.

You need to ask Apple for assistance with getting back into your old ID. To do this, click here and pick a method; if that page doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to resolve this issue through the Account Security team, fill out and submit this form.

At Apple Store this is handled with Replacement iPhone exactly like yours. If there is AppleCare or Warranty it will be covered, otherwise there will be a charge of $150 - $199 depending on iPhone model. If iPhone 5 it will be covered. If you want to try Virtual Home Button. Settings App > General > Accessibility > Assistive Touch > ON > tap new white screen button > Home.
