Time Capsule backup keeps failing

MacBookPro connected via ethernet to 1TB TC. Had same problem as many other users: backups hanging or failing repeatedly. So I completely erased the TC and started again. Backup proceeded well for about 8GB (out of 70GB total backup) but then the backup hung again, and Console started displaying this crash message, repeated endlessly:
=============
Sep 28 07:57:41 MacBkPro mdworker[1248]: fcntl to turn on FCHECKOPENEVT failed!
Sep 28 07:57:41: --- last message repeated 1 time ---

Sep 28 07:57:41 MacBkPro com.apple.launchd[1] (0x10bdd0.translate[1248]): Exited abnormally: Bus error

Now every time I start a new backup, when TimeMachine gets to around the 8GB mark it repeats precisely the same scenario.
HELP!

Nobody seems interested in this specific issue, but just in case anybody else is experiencing related problems, I offer a solution. To get an idea what's happening during backups, open "Console" (/Applications/Utilities/Console) and select the "system.log". Keep reading the last few lines as they scroll by.
===
mdworker1248: fcntl to turn on FCHECKOPENEVT failed!
===
"mdworker" is related to Spotlight indexing. I tried every other solution mentioned in this entire "TC" discussion area without success. I then turned OFF Spotlight indexing. (This took many hours of research to accomplish ... if you want to do it, just go get "OnyX" v1.9.9 - cost $0. Go to "Parameters" and select "Spotlight").
Everything is now working fine - the computer has never been more responsive and Time Machine backups have never been faster. I don't use Spotlight and have no use for it. (And yes - I know what it does).

  • Upgraded to Mavericks  and time machine backups keep failing.

I upgraded to Mavericks a few days ago and now I find my time machine backups keep failing. I first tried turning off the power to the time machine then turning it on again and I managed to get one complete backup but that took over 20 hours to complete.
The time machine  backup mode never seems to get beyond " preparing backup" then showing the message "backing up failed, disc already in use"
The time machine backup worked fine before I upgraded, is there a way round this problem or will I have to go through reloading the time machine as if it were a new piece of equipment?
My wife's iMac is still on mountain lion 10.8.5  and the backups on the same Time Machine work fine.
Any help would be gratefully received

    Hi,
I have exactly the same problem.
MBP 2011 running 10.9 named "ebook"
MacMini running 10.8.5 server with TM share
everything works fine UNTIL for some reason the MBP is interrupted during a TM backup ...
After that I get the disk already in use error !
Rebooting the MBP wont help, but I narrowed the problem down ...
Looking on the Mini server I noticed :
    - the TM backup user stays connected over AFP, even after several hours of inactivity and a couple of reboots of the MBP. Killing the AFP connection works, But problem stil continues !
    - looking on the MBP with "lsof | grep ebook" showed me that the SparseBundles were still in use by the AFP process ... Using the Server control panel and restarting AFP solved that ...
After restarting the AFP process the remote TM Backup started to work again !
A couple of days later, the same problem occurred again, fixed it by this work around ...
I hope there will be a more permanent solotiun for this !

My Time Machine backup keeps failing.  I get a message the "Volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup".  Please advise.
    Thanks, Howard

You can change the case sensitivity of the sparsebundle.. but I really doubt the error is real.
    See A8 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
The sparsebundle should have case sensitivity turned on.
I cannot even fathom how it could have changed.
Let me recommend before you start fooling around with the sparsebundle.
    Do a full network start.
Power everything off.. start up modem.. wait 2min.. power up the TC.. wait 2min.. power up any other network gear like switches.. wait..
Now power up the computer and try it.
If the error is the same.. I would do a factory reset of the TC.. give it all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Then reset TM .. see A4 in the same reference as above.. and do a verify of the backups.. A5 above and try the backup again..
    No luck..
Then erase the TC and start over.. it is sometimes necessary as TM does get itself in a knot.

Launch your console program (located in the utilities folder) and click on all messages in then left column then type "backupd" in the filter box in the upper right.  Read the messages,  it may give you a clue as to what's causing the problem.

  • Time Capsule Backup Keeps Aborting

I just moved from Windows to Mac...Happily, so far!
I am using a Time Capsule to back up my MacPro. It worked beautifully until I just loaded up about 37 gig of Windows related material to my MacBook. Since then, all attempts at backing up have failed. The first error message said that if the condition continued I had to repair my backup drive using the Disk Utility. I did that, the back up drive had no faults on it. Now, I am able to get more of a backup going, but it aborts about a tenth of the way through the process. I have reinstalled the Time Capsule software. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

Yes, I am ok with distinctions between Time Capsule and Time Machine. I have a new 1T Time Capsule which has worked flawlessly so far. I have been backing up over a wireless connection. I managed to download the Time Machine Buddy, and it is telling me that back-up was aborted because Indexing failed. I've pasted the log from the TMB below. I have xxx'd out my name.

  • Time Machine backups keep failing

My backups to external disk keep failing; it shows only 100 MB of available space. OK; Fine; so I tell it NOT to back up a number of extra folders; in an attempt to add extra space; but I can't change that 100 MB number, no matter what I do. Is there a fix. Should I repair the external disk?

Are you running Leopard or Snow Leopard? You've posted in the Snow Leopard forum, but your signature shows 10.5.3, and the handling is different.
If you're on Leopard, go to +Time Machine Preferences > Options+ and remove the check from the +Warn before old backups are deleted+ box, and try again. Time Machine will delete your oldest backup(s) to make room for new ones, if it can.
If it still fails, or you're actually on Snow Leopard, see #C4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Time machine backup keeps failing on specific folders

    Hi,
I have checked the forum and tried all relevenant suggestions, unfortunatly to no avail. I was wondering if any users would have any sparks of genius and point me in the right direction....
I currently run time machine with an apple time capsulae and my Imac, it seems to run for most files and folders ok but will fail on the microsoft user data folder (with the NO copy error in console) as well as a few other random ones (such as the parralell virtual machine). As this stops my backups I have excluded them and it runs fine for now, although its not Ideal as my e-mails or virtual machine is not backuping up (these are the most important). i have check my friends mac and his time machine seems to backup completely and fine.
Any ideas, as the reason I bought the time capsule is to have the best backups available.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Time Capsule backup constantly failing with error message - error message 11 but different file.

    Hi
I have had problems with my backup failing since 12 June
Most of the time I get error message 11 (have had error message 31 once) and each time it is a different file. The last failure gave this message in console
    17/06/2011 13:20:11          com.apple.backupd[1743]          Indexing a file failed. Returned 200 for: /Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Office/CalendarCore.framework, /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/Stephen Dalziel’s iMac/2011-06-16-232227.inProgress/10F26F18-689F-47D2-959E-964D07E82445/Macintos h HD/Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Office/CalendarCore.framework
I have followed Pondini C3 by excluding the file from the first message but then failure occurred with a different file so excluded that and it failed again.
Went through repair A5 - that took an age even connecting via ethernet - still not working.
I have to confess that before I got to Pondini troubleshooting I googled the problem and a forum said delete latest and partial backups from sparse bundle - I did this via Finder and now I can't get rid of them from trash - discovered via Pondini I shouldn't have done this and tried E6 but without success.
    What are my options?
I can use a computer but technical jargon is like Hieroglyphics to me so if you can reply in simple plain English that would be useful

Did you delete the Latest alias, and/or the most reccent time-stamped backup?  If so, your backups are toast.
Your only option is to erase the Time Capsule's disk and let Time Machine start fresh.  See To erase everything on the Time Capsule’s internal disk in #Q5 of Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.

  • Time Capsule backup suddenly fails. Why?

    Dear all,
I have used Time Capsule (1 TB) to backup three Macs for months now and everything has worked just fine. Since two days however, Time Machine doesn't backup anymore. It tries to access Time Capsule and then stops with an error message saying that "an error has occurred while creating the backup folder" (German text: "Beim Erstellen des Backup-Verzeichnisses ist ein Fehler aufgetreten"). I have no clue why this happens. Nothing has been changed on the Mac itself. Time Capsule has not yet run out of storage, 415 GBytes out of 929 are still available.
The error only occurs on one of my three Macs. I however have no idea how to resolve the problem since Time Machine doesn't give any more specific details.
I do not want to lose the backed up data....! So far Time Capsule has been pretty reliable but not anymore...
Thanks in advance for any help and kind regards

  • Time Capsule backup keeps growing even though I have no data!

I have just bought a new 2TB Time Capsule. I set up Time Machine to backup my hard drive and two USB disk drives that hold music and film. The initial backup seem to work fine - but every incremental backup then repeats large chunks of the backup. In particular one of the disk drives is backed up every time. The other oddity is that the progress indicator for incremental backups in Time Machine shows 'Backing up XGB of YGB' with both X and Y ticking up together. Meanwhile I have added virtually no data to any disk between backups. This (obviously) makes Time Machine unusable. I am just trying backing up only my internal hard drive to see if that works.
I have searched for help on this topic and found nothing (there is one entry from last year that is unanswered). Has anyone else seen this? Is there a known fix?
    Thanks for your help,
    Mike

    Mike Adam wrote:
I had already seen this document. However, none of these apply to my situation. The two drives in question are Western Digital and I have found some old posts that suggest that they are not compatible as Time Machine drives, but nothing that says that Time Machine cannot back up the contents.
Since Time Machine seems to be working with those Western Digital drives, I would think that the problem is not with those drives. You might look at those Time Machine support pages for information on the Time Machine Buddy widget (item A1 in that earlier page) to see if it (or anything else) can show you a list of just what's being backed up each time. That may explain what's going on.
do you want me to move the topic to the Time Machine forum, or can I leave it he now that I have started?
Since this thread is under way, I'd leave it here unless you can have someone move the entire thread. Confusion between Time Capsule (an Apple WiFi router with an integrated disk drive) and Time Machine (backup software included with OS X starting with OS X 10.5 that can use a Time Capsule disk as its destination drive) is fairly common.

  • Time machine backup keeps failing

I have a WD 2TB my book essential disk for about a year.  I've kept it connect to my airport extreme.  Starting a few days ago, the AE keeps dropping the connection to the disk -- rebooting solves the problem for a while.  So I decided to connect the disk directly (via USB) to my macbook pro 13".  In the past this has always worked.  However, now when Time machine does it's backup it gets about 10% of the way through and then it quits giving the non-specific message:
    Time machine error
The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.
I've run repair both on disk utility and drive genius 3 on the disk and both say that there is no problem.  Any suggestions?

That's one Apple's more infuriating messages, but there's usually another phrase after "Time Machine Error."
Most likely, Time Machine is having a problem with a file, but they don't bother to tell you that.
See #C2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  It will probably lead you to #C3.
It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.    If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, what you've done, and the results.

PLEASE HELP! (also, my MacBook Pro is still under warrenty, should I just bring it to the Genius Bar?) Thanks.

Boot from your recovery partition (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility, select your startup volume, and run Repair Disk (not Repair Permissions.) If any problems are found, repeat. Then reboot as usual and try again.

  • I had my hard drive replaced and since my Time Machine backups say failed

I had my hard drive replace and since my Time Capsule backups are failing. The exact message is:
The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk.
The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use disk utility to repair your backup disk.

No, replacing your hard drive has nothing to do with it. There is a problem with your backup drive. As far as Time Machine is concerned replacing a drive is no different than buying a new computer. Time Machine will need to make a brand new backup from scratch.
If you have a large enough backup drive this may not be a problem. Otherwise, you may not have sufficient space to maintain a new backup and keep the old one. So, I would suggest under the circumstances that you erase your backup drive, then start a new Time Machine backup from scratch.
    Drive Erase
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After Disk Utility loads select the volume you wish to format from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the Disk Utility main window.
    3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.

  • Restoring an existing Time Capsule backup to a new HD

The hard drive on my 6 month old MacBook Pro failed inexplicably several days ago. After wasting half a day trying to repair the disk, I caved in and made an appointment at the dreaded "Genius" Bar.
They verified my suspicions; complete failure. They kept the laptop, ordered a new drive and two days later informed me it was fixed. I sat down and connected it to my Time Capsule with an ethernet cable. When I turned it on, it played through that now insufferable multicultural "welcome"-in-twenty-languages jam and I followed Apple's instructions +Restoring an existing Time Capsule backup to a new Mac+:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1177?viewlocale=en_US
My favorite step is #12: +Your Mac will check the Time Machine backup for a period of time.+ When that period was clearly going to be a while, I went on a run, came back 40 minutes later and...it had returned me to the initial post-willkommen-bienvenido-etc. screen where I get to choose a language. Okay, my bad for leaving it unattended. I started over at #2, and this time it only took about half an hour. It showed the folders on the Time Capsule, I selected all of them, and clicked Transfer.
Almost immediately, it dove back into the welcome song! Now, for the third time, I'm at step #12. It's been over half an hour, and still no sign of hope. Just the progress bar checking for backups.
Would they have installed Snow Leopard on my Leopard machine? I definitely told them what I had been running, but it seems like a plausible reason for the hang-ups.
Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

Connect to your Time Capsule via Ethernet if at all possible.
After booting from your Leopard Install disc and selecting Utilities, select +Disk Utility+ and see if it can find the +sparse bundle+ containing your backups on your Time Capsule. You may have to join the network, etc., via the Airport icon in the menubar. If you can get the sparse bundle to appear in Disk Utility's sidebar, select it and do a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on it.
Would they have installed Snow Leopard on my Leopard machine? I definitely told them what I had been running, but it seems like a plausible reason for the hang-ups.
That's fairly likely; it happens a lot, probably because most folks have upgraded and installing SL has become a habit. But it shouldn't matter -- as long as you're using your Leopard Install disc, it should work fine. Once the restore actually starts, the first thing that happens is your internal HD is erased, and everything is restored from your backups.
It's also possible that whatever was going wrong on your internal HD corrupted something critical in your installation of OSX, and the corrupted stuff was backed-up, and that's what's giving TM a problem. If nothing else seems to help, try restoring from a previous backup.

  • Is there a standard SQLJ implementation?

I am looking for a SQLJ that can work with all JDBC drivers. I tried Oracle's SQLJ, but I could not make it work with non-Oracle database. Thanks, Ben
