Hi,
I am planning to buy a Time Capsule.
I have a macbook and a PC with Windows Vista.
My PC does not have the Wireless option, so i have to connect it to the Time capsule through ethernet to use it as a router.
I have 300 GB of files on my PC, how do i transfer this to the time capsule hard drive.........on the website it says Time capsule is a "wireless shared hard drive".....what does this mean......does it mean i cannot transfer my 300GB files from my PC to the Time capsule hard drive through the ethernet cable.

You can use Ethernet to transfer files and acess the Internet through the time capsule.

TIME CAPSULE BACKUP OVER INTERNET/VPN - POSSIBLE?

I would like to have my Macbook Pro backup to my Time Capsule in my office when I'm traveling.
We currently run an Apple OSX Server on our office network, and I have VPN access to the network. However I can't figure out how to mount the Time Capsule and run it (I can't in fact figure out how to access any of the computers on this network, except for the server which I can access via ARD).
Any help would be appreciated.

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

Copy time capsule to local external for rotating backups

Hello all,
I have time machine working perfectly with a time capsule. It has well over two year's worth of backups on it. So far, so good.
I also have a locally attached usb drive that I would like to add so I'll have a second backup. I want this to be a "rotating" time machine backup. I want this drive to also have all of my existing backup data on it. Furthermore, I want this to be an encrypted backup just like the time capsule is.
So, how do I copy my time capsule data over to the local usb drive?
Is it as simple as copying the .sparsebundle file from the time capsule over to the local drive and then pointing time machine to it?
PS - I've read Pondini's pages, but none of his scenarios match what I'm trying to do.
PPS - I would normally just go ahead and try it, but we're talking about nearly 1Tb of data so it will take days to copy.
PPPS - I am not at all averse to a little time capsule surgery if it would be better to do the copy with the TC drive attached directly via an enclosure.

I wanted the local sparsebundle because I can specify the encryption level on it.
However, now that ML supports encrypted local TM backups, a variation on the referenced method may work. I think I could reformat the local drive using an encrypted file system (but I don't think there is an option for encryption level when doing that) and then copy the Backups.backupdb file over.
That should work, I just won't get the higher AES256 option that would be available with a .sparsebundle.
Sparsebundle will not work on local drive.. TM is designed to use sparsebundle only on network drives.. it cannot even see a sparsebundle on a local drive.
On the other hand CCC has a lot more power and flexibility and creates (IMHO better backups).. at least from the restore point of view.. I have used CCC to create a sparsebundle backup on a local drive.. but I have not checked out its encyption ability.

Sorry, you have lost me since it appears that you have two completely separate issues here.
All that I can suggest is you start over and try to set up the Time Capsule again first...and then, once that is done and the Time Capsule is working correctly on the network....then, try to troubleshoot the separate Time Machine issue.
If you decide that you want to do this, we'll need some basic information:
Make and model number of your modem?
You are using OS X Mavericks (10.9.3), correct?

Yes, but that is not recommended. Storage and backup should be kept separate to reduce the chances of a disk failure. This is especially important because you cannot even partition a Time Capsule drive. Go get a separate drive for your storage needs. Get another drive for a second backup and use a different method of backup than Time Machine

Time Capsule backup for multiple users

I have my iMac setup so that each member of my family has their own account. I am the administrator. When I run a time capsule backup is it backing up their files as well or do I need to create a backup for their accounts.
If I create individual backups for their accounts will it backup the shared files like the applications or just files specific to their accounts? Is this something I need to control by selecting what files to exclude in the preferences
Time capsule seems great for simple backups but concerns me if I ever have a HD crash. It seems very difficult to restore a backup to a new mac if I ever have to do that. Does anyone else have this concern? I am considering buying another external drive and use SuperDuper to create full bootable backups at least once every 6 months or so.

It is much harder to check what Time Machine has backed up.. you can assume that everything currently needed to reproduce the same setup on another computer is there.
To double check you must spend a bit of time understanding both how Time Machine works and how to restore from it.

I must also say at the moment, on Yosemite in particular, I would not fully trust Time Machine.
I encourage people to make a bootable clone using Carbon Copy Cloner for example to a USB drive. You do not need to do it continually but the clone makes for a much easier return to normal.. since you can simply change boot disks. It costs $40 and is excellent value.. there are others you can buy.. and I am not connected to CCC in any way.. other than I use it and been amazed at what a great piece of software it is.

On your Mac.......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click on the Disks tab at the top of the window
Click Erase Disk
On the next window that appears, select the Quick Erase option, then click Erase
The operation will only take a few minutes.
Now you are ready to start new backups of both Macs. Back up one Mac first, then back up the other. Do not try to back up both Macs as the same time.

Time Capsule out of space for backups - how best to proceed?

I have a 500GB 802.11n (2nd Generation) Time Capsule which I use for Time Machine backups from my late-2008 Aluminium Unibody 250GB MacBook. My problem arose because I have used 229.33 GB of my hard disk on my MacBook, so I have less than 20 GB of free space on my MacBook. My iPhoto Library is 103 GB and yesterday I dragged it to an External Hard Drive (1TB). However, I have not deleted the iPhoto Library from my hard drive yet because I wanted to 'test' whether Time Machine would back up the new location of my iPhoto library to my Time Capsule .... the problem I have now is that Time Machine will not backup at all
I have tried several times to perform a Time Machine backup today, without success. I receive a message that 'Backup requires 246.75 GB but only 170.97 GB are available.
I've checked the TM backups on the Time Capsule and the earliest, latest and ONLY backup is one performed yesterday at 10.18am prior to my moving the iPhoto Library to the EHD. The EHD is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and is partitioned into four equal partitions of 250 GB (the fourth partition is slightly less. The 1st partition has a SuperDuper Bootable Clone of my hard drive (including the iPhoto Library on the Hard Disk). The 2nd partition is the new location for the iPhoto Library. The 3rd and 4th partitions are empty.
Can someone suggest whether I would be safe to somehow (how?) delete the existing TM backup on Time Capsule and simply start with a 'brand new' TM backup tonight? I'm thinking that if I have all 500GB available then TM SHOULD be able to perform a full backup and then I'll be OK with incremental backups for a while.
Also, is it possible/feasible (I know it wouldn't be the safest thing to do) to backup the iPhoto Library on the 2nd partition of my EHD to one of the blank partitions?
i would be grateful for any suggestions as to the best way to proceed

This is why it may not be a good idea to store other files on the same disk/partition as the Time Machine backups. consider the following:
Here is Apples’ line on this: “Time Machine works best if you use your backup disk only for Time Machine backups. This hasn't stopped some from successfully partitioning Time Machine hard disks and storing data on the other partition. As long as the Time Machine backup has its' own partition, you avoid any potential opportunities for conflict.
However, this is not an option for Time Capsule users as there is no easy way of partitioning the Time Capsules’ internal hard disk without elaborate effort. Granted, the Time Capsule is advertised as being able to perform both as a Time Machine backup destination and as a shared network drive [Apple Store (U.S.) - Time Capsule - 500 GB]
Nevertheless, some have experienced problems with maintaining files/folders occupying the same disk as Time Machine backups. In this case, they use the Time Capsule hard disk solely for Time Machine backups. Then attach an external hard disk to the Time Capsules USB port and store additional files there. This added disk will still be available to all Macs that can access the Time Capsule. (Note though, that any USB disks attached to the USB port of the Time Capsule can not then be backed up to the Time Capsule via Time Machine. Time Machine will only backup your Macs internal hard disk or any external hard disks physically attached to the Mac. Time Machine can not backup one remote device to another remote device.)

How do I configure my Time Capsule to use ethernet?

Over my Wifi, the estimated backup time is 72 days so guessing an ethernet cable will be substantially faster but don't see a place to configure the Time Machine/Time Capsule interface to default to an ethernet connection. Anyone know how???

In most cases, once you connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule, you are automatically setup for backup over Ethernet. Nothing else is required.
The exception would be if you configured your Time Capsule to "join" your wireless network using wireless only. In that case the Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule are not enabled, so backup over Ethernet woud not be possible unless you reconfigured your Time Capsule in a different manner.

Restoring an existing Time Capsule backup to a new HD

The hard drive on my 6 month old MacBook Pro failed inexplicably several days ago. After wasting half a day trying to repair the disk, I caved in and made an appointment at the dreaded "Genius" Bar.
They verified my suspicions; complete failure. They kept the laptop, ordered a new drive and two days later informed me it was fixed. I sat down and connected it to my Time Capsule with an ethernet cable. My favorite step is #12: +Your Mac will check the Time Machine backup for a period of time.+ When that period was clearly going to be a while, I went on a run, came back 40 minutes later and...it had returned me to the initial post-willkommen-bienvenido-etc. screen where I get to choose a language. Okay, my bad for leaving it unattended. I started over at #2, and this time it only took about half an hour. It showed the folders on the Time Capsule, I selected all of them, and clicked Transfer.
Almost immediately, it dove back into the welcome song! Now, for the third time, I'm at step #12. It's been over half an hour, and still no sign of hope. Just the progress bar checking for backups.
Would they have installed Snow Leopard on my Leopard machine? I definitely told them what I had been running, but it seems like a plausible reason for the hang-ups.
Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

Connect to your Time Capsule via Ethernet if at all possible.
After booting from your Leopard Install disc and selecting Utilities, select +Disk Utility+ and see if it can find the +sparse bundle+ containing your backups on your Time Capsule. You may have to join the network, etc., via the Airport icon in the menubar. If you can get the sparse bundle to appear in Disk Utility's sidebar, select it and do a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on it.

That's fairly likely; it happens a lot, probably because most folks have upgraded and installing SL has become a habit. But it shouldn't matter -- as long as you're using your Leopard Install disc, it should work fine. Once the restore actually starts, the first thing that happens is your internal HD is erased, and everything is restored from your backups.
It's also possible that whatever was going wrong on your internal HD corrupted something critical in your installation of OSX, and the corrupted stuff was backed-up, and that's what's giving TM a problem. If nothing else seems to help, try restoring from a previous backup.

Can't Connect to My Time Capsule Backups, Please Help!!!

I have been using Time Machine/Time Capsule to back my data up for over a year. I bought a new MacBook Pro this morning. I did not want to use Migration Assistant to transfer everything over because there were many bugs and corruptions on my old disk and was scared that would all be transferred to my new machine. It was time for a fresh start.
I set up my new computer and transferred most of the files I needed via a flash drive. I am now trying to set up my MacBook Pro to connect to my Time Capsule backup disk via Time Machine, but once I enter Time Machine it does not allow me to go "back in time" to see all of my previous backups and restore points. There are some really important files I am trying to get to, but this computer isnt connecting to the Time Capsule backups. The old computer has already been completely reformatted, but it is still able to access the Time Capsule backups.
I have done some internet research and learned that Time Machine uses a computer's ethernet MAC address to allow access. There are some codes posted on various websites that allow to alter what Time Machine thinks you MAC address is so that you can access your backups with a new computer/different logic board. None of these Terminal workarounds worked for me. The Genius Bar and Apple Care couldn't help either.
I am hoping somebody can help me out. I understand I can use my old computer to get into Time Machine and retrieve what I need then transfer those to the new machine. But there must be a way to allow a new computer to fully access Time Capsule backups, but curiously, I can't find it. I rather have my new computer have full access because I am selling the old laptop and so I wont be able to use it to access my backups any longer.
Sorry for the long explanation, but I hope that gives someone all the facts required to both understand what I am saying and help me fix the problem.

Right now it is just empty because I have unmounted and disconnected my Time Capsule. I'm trying a low-tech work around to see if this works, but much rather do it the "right way."
What I am doing is this:
(1) Use Migration Assistant to copy everything from the Time Capsule to the new machine (this is exactly what I was trying to avoid initially). Migration Assistant has been copying files for about 5 hours now (still not sure what is going to happen).
(2) Create a full backup on Time Capsule with my MacBook Pro now that it has everything from the Time Capsule on it.
(3) Do a fresh install of Snow Leopard.
(4) Hopefully, have the fresh start on my machine I wanted, but still have access to at least one archived copy of my old computer and files/folders.
Does this make sense? Basically, the new machine does not allow me to access the old backups. So I am handicapping the machine now by reverting to my old settings via Migration Assistant, will back that up, then start all over from scratch again but hopefully have the peace of mind that my files are not gone because I will at least have that one copy of all my old copies in a Time Capsule backup that the new machine can access.

I am using a 32 day old 2TB Time Capsule, The Computer I am using is a white Macbook early 2009 - 120 gb HD and i have USED 80 out of 120 - , it is connected via wifi to a ADSL +2. The Time Capsule I am running is connected directly via the modern to the TC using a ethernet cable. I have the latest version if OS X Lion and the latest update and firmware of TC. I am backing up directly to the TC’s drive.
The Problem,
A couple of days ago i started to do my first backup of my Macbook, I started at 8 am in the mourning in which it took till 10pm at night using wifi, i am un-bale to use ethernet cable... However this backup did not fully complete and at around 4pm that same day when I was trying to backup It said it had only "5 seconds left" until it started to increase the amount of data that the TC had to backup. It got to 10pm and fail the first backup with an error message, which I do no have, I think it is something to do with the disk being disconnected. So I tried again the next day, when it started the gage said it only had to backup initially 250mb, which i would assume this means it's completed it's first backup, as the day progressed it still was backing up, and was presenting the same issues as before, that is it said it "only had 5 seconds left", however once again it began showing that it had to backup more data, at the end of the day it had to back up 6.5 gb which it did but hadn't fully finished.
A quick side note: I have been able to successfully make a backup on a early 2010 iMac.

The first Time Machine backup of a Mac will always involve transferring a lot of data. Over Wi-Fi that means it will take a long time. I'm not sure why you say you're unable to use an Ethernet cable, but I recommend that you use one for that first backup. Connect it just before you go to bed, turn off Wi-Fi to assure that it's really using the Ethernet connection, and start the backup. It should be complete by the time you get up. At that point you can disconnect the Ethernet cable, turn Wi-Fi back on, and do all future Time Machine backups over Wi-Fi.
