Time Capsule backup with MacBook running on battery power.

Will time machine back up to time capsule without AC power being connected to the computer? So far I can't find an option that will let me backup just using battery power. One of TC big selling points was so laptop users could backup without wires. That is the reasons I got time capsule was so I could wirelessly backup my MacBook, but it seems I still need to have a wire connected to the computer. So if you need to have the power cord what is the big deal of a wireless backup? I have searched the topics and no one seems to have even hinted at this question.

That's strange, it allows me to back up manually. What's the charge level of your battery when you requested the backup? Could be a safeguard to prevent failed backups if the battery level's too low...
And for your original post, I'm sorry but I have to disagree. While you are still technically wired to the power outlet, you don't have to be wired to your Time Capsule or an external hard drive. You can, for example, be in your living room next to an outlet and be backing up to your drive in your computer room. Much more convenient IMO.

  • HT1176 Initial Time Capsule backup on MacBook Pro that doesn't have an Ethernet port

I just got a 3TB time capsule and am trying to backup my MacBook Pro. The initial process is very slow, but my MacBook doesn't have an Ethernet port. How can I connect the time capsule to the MacBook Pro to make the initial backup go more quickly?

A very good investment to make would be......

  • Time capsule slow with macbook pro

    Hello,
    I'm using a  Time Capsule 2T with a MacBook pro 2.0Ghz Intel Core i7, 8GB ram, OSX 10.9.2.
I have a 10mbps internet plan and it works perfectly with my iphone or ipad mini using the wireless signal.
But with my macbook pro, the speed goes down to 1mbps, at maximum...
I've reseted my modem, the Time Capsule, macbook and nothing changed...
Does anyone know what could be happening?? Tks!!!

Have you tested with ethernet? From the specs of your machine it should still have ethernet port.
That is the first test.. with wireless off.. as it helps to establish if the issue is just wireless or is some network problem. If it is still slow post back without doing anything else.
Next test.. copy a file to the TC.. use a big file, a system update or some such.. copy it from the computer to the TC.. and TC to the computer. What speed do you get??
That establishes if the problem is wireless overall or is it wrongly setup somehow.
Test with wireless should be about 3-5M from the TC.. no need to be right next to it.
Make sure ipv6 is set to link-local in wireless setting on the computer.
Do the wireless diagnostics, which is built into the OS. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5606
Follow all the wifi best practice.
No luck post back your test results.

  • Time Machine backup with MacBook Pro 10.7.5 and Seagate Backup Plus Drive?

Anyone have any suggestions for a successful backup using Seagate Time Machine Backup Plus 1TB hard drive and 10.7.5 MacBook Pro?

Is it something like this? If so, then it's likely already formatted for use with OS X - "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". Just connect the drive, make sure that it mounts, and turn on and setup Time Machine in System Preferences.
The first backup may take awhile, but hourly backups should be quick. Don't worry about keeping the drive plugged into your Mac all of the time - when your on battery Time Machine will make local snapshots on your internal. Just plug it up when you're ready.

  • Full Time Capsule backup to MacBook Air

My wife's MacBook Air's hard drive died while she was traveling on business. She had it replaced at a Mac store and now has a new drive with OSX 10.5.8 on it. I'm now trying to restore her old drive from Time Capsule. When I go to the Utilities and use Migration Assistant to restore we can't locate her sparsebundle. I can see it when we mount the TC drive.
I've looked through various topics on the subject and it seems like I'm supposed to use the OSX disc (not available on her optical driveless MBAir) and then choose Utilities > Restore System From Time Machine. When I use the Remote Disc option from the Finder menu I don't see any Utilities options.
I'm sure this should be straight forward but it doesn't seem to be.
    Thanks for any help.

It doesn't show up on the +*Select Your Disk+* window at all? If not, try repairing the backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

That's for a "full system restore," including OSX. Without a DVD drive, it's obviously not going to work that way. If you have another Mac, with a DVD drive, and a Leopard Install disc, you may be able to connect the two, make a partition on the Air's internal HD, and copy the Install disc to it. Then boot from that partition. Post back if you have all that and want to try it.

  • Can I use my Time Capsule backup with PC?

My iMac died.  i have it all backed up on my Time Capsule.  Do I have to have a Mac to access that data?  Also, if not, can I continue to use theTime Capsule with a PC?  I'm wondering because I can't afford a new Mac now and am thinking of getting a PC in the interim.   Thanks.

Reading is copying a file from disk to another disk.. it  requires no changes in the disk.. writing a file to a disk changes the disk table of contents and files.. it is standard across OS systems. Mac can read NTFS cannot write to it.. Windows cannot write or read HFS+ but you can read with an addon. The OS does not natively handle the file format so reading is much less dangerous than writing.
You do not need to erase the sparsebundle. If you intend to recover the Mac at some later stage then keep it on the TC unless it occuples 80% of the space.. in which case the TC is useless to you.
Or you can copy the whole sparsebundle to the USB drive whist you have friends mac connected up. Then erase the drive. Or you can plug a USB into the TC and use airport utility from windows and archive the TC to the USB and then erase it.. whatever you like.
However you do it the sparsebundle itself is useless to you in windows.
If you get a new Mac it is better to start a new TM backup. You can recover files but I recommend not continuing the same backup. Again up to you..
Read through the info in FAQ by Pondini for help in understanding what TM can and cannot do.

  • Time Capsule works with MacBook Pro (Mavericks) but not with IOS devices?  recent problem starting March 1, 2015.

I have a Time Capsule version 7.7.3 (model A1470) which has worked fine for almost 2 years with all devices, Apple and otherwise.  As of beginning of this month, March 2015 - no longer works with a new IPAD mini 3 and 6-month old iPhone 6 (both updated as of last night) BUT still works fine with MacBook Pro (Mavericks 10.9.5) and Epson printer XP-600.
On both IOS devices Airport Utility shows the Time Capsule and shows green light connection to internet, but never does the connection. The little status circle just keeps going round and never shows the Wifi rainbow symbol. both devices work fine on other Wifi's.  Airport Utility on iPhone actually connects enough to check on Airport base station's firmware 7.7.3 and says it is up to date!  but sadly stays on LTE.
    Have tried resetting, replugging etc...
Also, tried checking on updates.  Nothing shows in Airport Utility. When I try to go to see past updates ~/Library/Application Support/Apple/AirPort/Firmware to see if updated, there is no Airport in the Apple folder?
    A mystery...

Reset the TC to factory and redo the setup. see details below.
Here is the typical list of things you should try.. and if this doesn't help post again.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer or perhaps it is better using iOS on the phone or ipad currently having issues.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round. For iOS the fixed channels particularly for 2.4ghz has helped.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue. This is a problem for a TC in bridge mode.
If this is of no help.. what modem do you have? What function other than modem does it have.. ie none or router??
How is the TC connected into the network? What function does it have? Router or bridge for example.
Post a few screenshots of the setup.

  • Canon printer into Time Capsule - works with macbook not imac - why?

    Hi all,
This has been up in the iMac section for a couple of days and no one has replied. I thought I'd post it in here as people with TC's may have come across this and know how to fix it. I originally thought it was an iMac fault - perhaps it still is! Anyway I hope I've not broken any rules by posting it in here, when its already else where, if so apologies in advance.
I have both an iMac and a MacBook Pro (3 weeks old). I also have a time capsule and have plugged my Canon iP4500 into the USB port on the TC. I had, before getting the macbook, the printer printing wirelessly, with all the functionality that it should have using the airport on my iMac and the TC. Then after an upgrade of OS X, it suddenly stopped working wirelessly. I can not get it to work, no matter what I try - I've reset the printer settings in system prefs, reinstalled the drivers from the Canon web site, re-setting the TC - nothing works.
However it does work from my MacBook Pro! It has the same OS X version, the same printer drivers downloaded from the same site.
Obviously I'd like both computers to be able to print wirelessly - not sure what's going on with the iMac.
All help is very very appreciated.

I thought I'd search the hard disk and remove all files, drivers et al that I could find relating to the printer. Then reinstalled the up to date driver from the Canon website. (If I knew how / if it possible to post a screen grab of the printer window I would - so I've made a new page on my website - you can see screen grabs at: http://web.me.com/timhydes/Site/CanoniP4500_printerissues.html ).
This time the printer window pops us as per usual, then in the top half section where it shows the icon, the name of the file it should be printing, but underneath it says "No pages found!", in the status table in the bottom half it says "Printing" (see screen grab 1). If I leave it for a while, it changes the top half to "Printer Ready" and the status menu says "Stopped" (see screen grab 3).
If I click on hold, then resume I get a new window which says: "Operation Count not be completed" "client-error-not-possible" (see screen grab 2).
I've checked that there is printer ink, paper et al, and it still prints from my MacBook.
I wondered it this may shed some light on the issue from those more knowledgeable than my self.
    Many Thanks
    Tim

  • How to configure time capsule backup with windows7 ?

I cannot configure time capsule to do the backup of my PC. I am using windows7 with SP1

Does the windows computer have access to the TC hard disk?
If so use a backup software that can backup to network drive.. MSbackup in the home versions cannot. You need to use third party.

  • Accessing (continuing) old Time Capsule backup with new Powerbook

Using Migration assistant I set up my new MacBook Pro. I read that I could access my Old Timecapsule backup with Lion. I followed the steps alt click on timecapsul in the Doc (actually not the dock ...up where the ICON is upper right) Selected Browse other Backup disks selecked my backup but nothing happens. It keeps trying to set up a new backup and the old data is not retrievable. I would like to continue to use the old backup. How do that. No dialog pops up offering access ...nothing. I installed Lion after I migrated and after my first atempt to access Timecapsule data.
Oh old mac had motherboard replaced so can't access the Timecapsule with that anymore either.

  • Disk Utility stops repairing Time Capsule backup with no info

After having problems backing up to a long-term stable backup on TC, I have tried using Disk Utility to repair the sparsebundle.
The repair begins, but never finishes. And no details are left in DU to decode what happened.
Does this mean sparsebundle corrupt? Or a problem with DU?

    Sugith Varughese wrote:
Wow, DU by ethernet IS much faster than wireless!
Unfortunately, DU said the sparse bundle was okay, but when I tried another TC backup, it failed again.
I assume this means there's no option but to delete the sparse bundle and start again?
No. There may be nothing at all wrong with the TC or sparse bundle. We need to know why it failed. Without the actual message(s), we're shooting in the dark. Start with #C2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting. It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.
If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup, what you've done, and the results.

  • Why won't my MacBook run on battery power when it is charged?

I love my 2009 MacBook but whenever I use it I have to have it plugged into the wall and if it ever comes slightly unplugged the laptop shuts off at that instant.  I have checked the charge on the battery from the battery and my laptop says that it is charged to 96 percent.

Your battery is 2 years old? Can you post the number of charge cycles and the other info in System Profiler (if you're on 10.6, it may be a bit different - I'm on 10.7.2 - but go to the apple, then About this Mac, then More Info. Then post the battery information (health and cycle count).

How can I connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

You can direct connect your MBA to the LaCie via USB 2 cable.  If you have an Apple Airport Router you can USB connect the LaCie drive to the router and then use Airport Utility to configure it.  Time Machine can access it either way.
