Time Capsule. Can I back up 2 different macs? What do I have to do.
I want to be able to back up 2 mac. Both have about 70gs of stuff and I have a 1 tb drive. So that should be no problem. I have the time capsule already set-up wireless.
Do I have to make 2 folders? One for each computer? If so how do I do this.
Any help would be great.
I just do want to have to do a restore and get all of my daughters stuff on my mac.
Thanks

Just set them both up, via #Q1 in the Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Time Machine will make a separate +sparse bundle disk image+ for each Mac's backups.
As noted, it will be much faster to do the initial setup and first backup while connected via Ethernet, if at all possible. So your best bet will be to set up one, and let it's first backup complete, before setting-up the second.

  • Time Capsule--can I back up Two different Laptops on the Time Capsule?

It's just about that easy. I just got the Time Capsule. I backed up my MacBook Pro. Now I'd like to use the same Time Capsule to back up my wife's MacBook. Can this be done? If so, how? I keep getting the failed message from the Time Machine Backup.
    Thanks for the help.
    Dave

No question that it can be done. I just got a new MacBook a couple of weeks ago and I am backing it up to our TC alongside my son who has been using it since last Sept. with his MacBook. There was no problem setting it up. I just clicked on TimeMachine in the Dock and it asked me where I wanted to back my files up to. The only choice was the existing Time Capsule. I clicked and away it went. I took the advice of others and connected my Mac directly to the TC for the initial backup instead of relying on the wireless. It only took a couple of hours.

  • Time Capsule Drive Partitioning / Backing Up 4 Different Macs, 3 iPhones

Just purchased a refurbished 2Gb Time Capsule. While I've been using Time Machine on 2 iMacs and 2 PowerBooks (1 each of Intel & PPC), I would like to use the Time Capsule to take over the duties.
I'm also about to purchase an AppleTV. As the equipment we own is oldish (256Gb and smaller drives), I don't want to waste space to what could be several decades of backup. So here are my questions.
    Running under Leopard 10.5.8:
[1] Does the MacOS automatically allocate space for each Mac (and iPhone) or do I need to partition the drive for each one?
[2] I'm not clear on how the new AppleTV (sans drive version) can make use of the Time Capsule's hard drive. Can I play from the TC? Can I stream to it from the AppleTV?

No, and you can't partition the TC's internal drive.
Time Machine will make a separate container, a +sparse bundle disk image,+ for each Mac's backups. They'll all coexist on the TC and compete for the same space.
I don't have an iPhone, so don't know how their backups work.

  • Can i use 2 time capsule for the back of the same Mac computer, for improve the security of the data store

I will save my data in 2 time capsule at the same time for improve data security

Mountain Lion added this ability.. it doesn't do two backups at the same time but each time it backs up it uses the alternative location.
Under Lion you can manually set it to use a different target.. this isn't difficult but you must do it.

  • My windows vista pc is connected through an ethernet connection to my time capsule, can i back it up?

I installed Airport Utility 5.4.2 for windows as it seemed the only one for vista. Maybe I just don't know what the heck I'm doing (probably) but I can't see Time Machine for Airport or Time Capsule....
I did this connecting my pc directly to the back of the TC with an ethernet connection.
    anyone?
    thx

Press and hold the reset in the TC and wait for the front LED to flash rapidly. Release it when it does.. about 10sec.
If the computer does not get an IP try another computer.. or another ethernet cable.. as the TC will most certainly work at least to the extent of handing out an IP.
Ensure the TCP/IP setting in the computer is set to auto.
As long as you get an ip you can then open the utility and do the setup.

  • HT201250 can I back up two different Macs using time machine to the same external hard drive?

I have a MacBook Pro and a Intel Power Mac Tower.  The Power Mac is backed up to a 4 TB external hard drive using Time Machine.  Can I also back up the MacBook Pro to the same 4TB hard drive using its time machine without altering any of the Power Macs backed up files on the 4TB hard drive?

Yes, as long as the backup drive is large enough.

  • Time Machine- Can I restore to a different Mac?

    Hi,
I had two macs. A Macbook Pro and an iMac. Recently my iMac was destroyed in a flood, and I am not going to replace it.
Both of my mac's backed up to the same Time Capsule and the iMac was my main storage place for my aperture library...
I don't care about anything else on that computer, but I need to get into that aperture library...
    Help!
Can I restore it from the back up of my iMac? Is there a way to browse files from my Macbook Pro? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can restore to a different location from a different Mac.. look at the info pondini gave here.

  • Can i use time capsule to back up to different macs?

    time capsule,
can i use it to back up 2 macs -
i just bought an i mac and will be using both my imac and macbook pro and want to back them both up - is this possible?
and when restoring from time capsule - ie from my macbook pro to my new imac can i only bring certain things or must i import the whole set up?
    thanks

You can backup both.. no issues there.
TC and TM keep each backup separate. There is nothing you need to do.
Restoring one computer to a different one is messy. You cannot do a full restore.. the drivers etc are different.
You need each computer to have a working OS, and you can then pickup certain items from the backup.
Pondini gives the best info for this.. Look at his FAQ

  • Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partition?

Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partitioned Time Capsule? I understand that the Time Machine (software) cannot backup a networked drive (the external) and that Time Capsule (the router/wireless hard drive) does not have its own backup software... so it won't backup the connected drive. What I would like is an alternate solution for having an automated backup of a networked drive. A 2TB Time Capsule has more than enough space for Time Machine backups of my family of Macbooks, so I had hoped to mirror a 500GB external drive (with shared media files) to a portion of the Time Capsule internal hard drive. I assume this would require a partition of the Time Capsule drive. If not, would the sparse file from the various computers being backed up need to be copied to the external drive as part of the RAID1 setup? This seems like overkill for the Time Machine backup, but it would cover the media files.

The complexity with this idea is the software has to run from a Mac computer on your network.. so you need a Mac turned on, probably most of the day.
It isn't possible to partition the TC although you can create a image area.
The software would have to copy the material, that means all files to be copied, go from USB drive, back to the Mac, then back to the TC, and written to the drive. In other words you have just added Network congestion, although a proper incremental backup type software will not actually use a lot of capacity.
Finally it will be slow.. network drives are slower than internal drives. Well USB connected drive is much slower than the same drive connected directly to the computer.. and if the drive is connected directly to a computer it can be shared with the network.

Read carefully the speed of the USB drive plugged into the TC.

If you want to see what is in a file that is backed up by time machine then you have to restore the entire file. Having said that I have had good experience with Time Machine and individual files... if the file is there then all of it's components are almost for sure there. A way to get around this in Aperture would be to use referenced images. The images then still exist as individual files and can be backed up and restored individually. You would have to do so on a file by file basis though and your album information would still only be saved within the Aperture library.

You can, but how are you going to back up those other files?  When (not if) your Time Capsule fails, you risk losing them.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details.
Then can i access these files only on the time capsule without connecting it?
Not sure what you mean.  You have to connect a computer, either via Ethernet cable or wirelessly, to read or write to the disk.

Quick question!!  Is it mandatory that I set up my time capsule as my DSL modem?  Based on the location of my iMAC right now it would be better to just leave the modem provided by my internet provider in place.  I really just want to use the time capsule as a back-up storage device for now and connnect the ethernet cable from my ISP at a later date.

Generally it is easier to bridge the TC and plug it into the router.. it then lives on the network.. it is after all, a network drive.. and you can access it via your existing connection whether wireless or wired to the existing modem.
If you really want a totally stand alone setup please tell me how you are presently accessing internet on the Mac you want to backup on the TC.

  • After I back everything up to my time capsule, can I just delete it off my computer then to make more storage room?

I just did a full back up to my time capsule. There are a ton of pictures that I can delete to make room for more stuff on my computer. If they're all backed up to the time capsule, am I able to delete them from my computer then or will they delete from the time capsule as well? Thanks!

The following sentence contains a simple concept that many users cannot seem to grasp.
If you delete any file from your Mac....then you have no backup.
The file on the Time Capsule has just become your "master" or "original"
What will happen when....not if....the Time Capsule has a problem?
So, while you can delete the files on your Mac, I would only do this with a data that I could afford to lose....since at some point, you will lose it.

New Time Capsule will not back up my 2009 MacBook Pro. I can see and find my last back before Mavericks but cannot backup. The TC will not allow me to delete or start a new backup disk. My 2024 MacBook Air did the same yesterday but today it backs up.

Seems to be working now. I left the MacBook on all morning trying to back up and now works.
