Time capsule causing screen flicker/"ripple effect" lines on MBP

When I wake my MBP up from sleep mode, time capsule sounds like it's waking up to, then it does a backup and when this happens this flicker/ripple effect/wavey line quickly races across the top of my screen a few times then goes away.  Has anyone ever heard of this?  Also is it normal for time capsule to be warm all of the time?

From what I've read on different posts regarding video card issues and the early 2008 15" MBPs, or "affected models", Apple seems very selective at what they'll honor for repair. Hopefully my MBP will be repaired under this recall, but am not holding my breath.
My 15" MBP (early 2008 Penryn) has developed video card issues I suspect. It doesn't do the dark screen as others have which Apple is more likely to repair under the recall, but random batches of lined patterns show up on the display, it will blink sometimes, then it will totally lock up forcing a hard shut down with the power button.
I took it into a local Apple Authorized Service center, they ran the NVIDIA test on it which it passed, showing that the "known" defect wasn't the issue with my computers video card. Well something's screwed up with the video card most likely. They recommended taking it to the Genius bar at the Apple Store which I plan to do. It's less than 3 years old, Good grief!
I've been an avid Apple user for over 16 years, and have hardly ever run into hardware issues. Guess I've been lucky. But how Apple will handle my MBPs issues is unknown to me. Hopefully it will be positive, but am not holding my breath.

  • Waking up MBP and Time Capsule causing a quick "ripple affect" across my screen

    Hi all,
When I wake my MBP up from sleep mode I can hear this slight little noise in my Time Capsule like it's waking up to.  After this happens there are a few quick "ripple affect" lines that qucikly go across the top of my screen.  Anyone ever hear of this?

Actually, you didn't need to do that.  All you had to do was start from the Recovery HD and do the restore.  It restores everything, including OSX, from the backups.
You can even restore from an earlier backup if necessary, even if it's a different version of OSX.
(Conclusion: PLEASE could the guys and gals who invented Time Machine (+ Time Capsule) read this!!
Very unlikely.  This is a user-to-user forum.  It's supplied by Apple, but their technical folks almost never browse here.
However, Apple does provide a Feedback page at:  http://www.apple.com/feedback/timemachine.html
They claim to read every submission, but never respond.
And/or, I've noticed in these days of e-mail everywhere, an old-fashioned physical snail-mail letter is a bit unusual, so sometimes gets more attention.

  • Aborted automatic backup to Time Capsule causes machine to freeze

I have a MBP (Santa Rosa) 15" with 2GB RAM (the stock one I got with the MBP)and a newly arrived 500GB Time Capsule, connected via Airport.
I got 2 awful freezes in 4 days: mouse pointer stuck, no way to get back to work without a brutal shutdown (via power button).
I think I tracked down the problem, by looking at system.log.
In both cases the last (or nearly the last) records in the log refer to an aborted backup (I've set up Time Machine) because the machine is not connected to AC-power.
Here are the mentioned lines, after which only the boot sequence log appears.
    Apr 14 23:17:55 Macintosh kernel[0]: AFP_VFS afpfs_mount: /Volumes/MyVolume, pid 3158
Apr 14 23:17:56 Macintosh /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[3162]: Not starting automatic backup, running on non-AC power source.
Apr 14 23:19:55 Macintosh com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.netauth.sysagent[3158]): Stray process with PGID equal to this dead job: PID 3161 PPID 1 check_afp

Apr 18 21:07:32 Macintosh /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[1297]: Not starting automatic backup, running on non-AC power source.
As you can see in the first one there is an extra line that misguided me before, but it's probably some notice arrived late from a process. In that case I left the machine unattended for a few minutes, in the second one, I noticed the freeze almost immediately. Actually, the clock on the menu-bar was at 21:08 when it froze, so the effect of the freeze follows about 30sec/1min after the triggering event.
I also think that some of the troubles reported here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6967074 might be related to the same event and not to switching locations.

Well, I found a fix. I first moved the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file from the Preference folder to the desktop, just in case I needed in the future (it turns out I didn't). Then I rebooted my computer. Time Machine did not find the .plist file and so I had to select again the disk for backup on Time Capsule. Then I backed up and it finally completed the hourly backup and now it seems back on track with the hourly backups

  • Time Capsule causes iMac to FREEZE

My Time Capsule is DIRECTLY WIRED to my iMac via an ETL VERIFIED phone line cable (I don't like wireless it's too slow and unreliable).  Even so, at the end of a backup everything freezes and I can't get the iMac to re-start or shut down in the proper way - I even left it overnight to run it's course - but it still remained in a freeze.  Also, the little clock symbol seems to be revolving more slowly than normal.  The only way I can get it all working normally again is to use the iMac power switch to shut it all down.  As we all know, this method of shutting down is not desirable.
When I'm then able to look in the Time Machine Preferences, there's no information about the Oldest and Latest backups as in this screen shot:-
Can anyone out here advise me, please?

It seems your suspicions are right about the "unknown SIGSEGV code 0".  I do run Adobe Bridge CS4, which I've used since it came out, and never had any problems using it.  What can I do now?  Here's a 'copy' & 'paste' of the relevant section from the Console (my Adobe bridge was not open at the time):-

  • Time Capsule causes Internet to move at a snails pace.

I've had my Time Capsule for a few months now, and only recently has it began to function like so. My first instinct was to blame Time Warner for the slow internet, yet after testing the speed with and without the router, I've narrowed it down to the TC. I've reset the Time Capsule, given it a few hours rest to cool down, and nothing. I've turned Time Machine off. I've restarted computers..no go.
When I plug in the TC and get everything hooked up, the internet is fine, but within about 5 minutes, the speed is reduced that that of 56k taking easily 3 minutes to load a single webpage.
I'm not sure if this could be the cause of a recent software update, or outside software interfering.
Anyone have this or a similar problem with suggestions?

Same problem. I have a Time Capsule 500GB Router. Recently it has a slow connection speed to the internet. The Las Vegas Speed Test (http://test.lvcm.com) shows download speeds averaging 12.0 - 15.0 mps and upload speeds of 50-99 kps. If I connect my iMAC directly to the cable modem, the upload speeds improve to approximately 2.0 - 3.0 mps. Note that my IMAC is connected to the Time Capsule though an Ethernet cable (not wireless).
I was looking for similar posts on the web and found a gentleman who disabled his WINS (wireless service). I did the same to the Time Capsule and the upload speeds (hence the entire internet experience) returned to normal.
I restarted the wireless service using my prior SSID with WPA/WPA2 Personal security and speeds stay at normal. Other computers connected wireless accessing the internet enjoy similar high speeds. The lasts for some time until the internet upload speed slows down again. I can repeat the procedure (shut off the wireless, etc.) with the same result.
    Has anyone seen this before?

  • Time Capsules causes MacBook Pro to crash and needs restart

After working seamlessly of months when Time Capsule commences a backup it causes the MacBook Pro to crash requiring immediate restart. This seems to have happened after 2 changes to my MacBook last night- installing Office 2008 and also OS X update ?SP1. I have tried turning off virus software and also resetting the Time Capsule - same problem
    Can anyone help please?

An apple care agent walked me through the solution, and I am in backup mode now. Hopefully the problem is resolved. The fix is involves moving the existing sparsebundle on the TC disk (access via finder) into a new folder and starting a new backup in time machine, which creates a new sparsebundle. The old one can be deleted from the TC following a couple of successful backup iterations. Hope this helps and works.

  • Ethernet Between Extreme and Time Capsule Causes TC to drop off network.

    This stumped Apple Support:
    Set up.
Basement (where service enters the home):
CABLE MODEM ===> AIRPORT EXTREME (router and wifi) I have my Directv SWM Ethernet connected here.
I have an Ethernet cable run from here to my upstairs office.
    Upstairs Office:
TIME CAPSULE ===> Ethernet to each of three IMACs (which back up to the TC)
Various AP Express for music and wireless extenders.
Here is my issue. All of the components work perfect when the AP Extreme, TC, and AP Express(es) are on WIFI.
When I try to connect the TC to the Extreme over Ethernet the TC drops off the network.
(This happens with or without the Directv connected)
This is frustrating because I hate losing the speed to my imac's by using wifi vs. Ethernet.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Close AirPort Utility if it is open.
With the TC powered on, hold in the reset button on the back of the TC for 9-10 seconds and then release. Allow a full minute for the TC to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Connect the Ethernet cable (I assume that you have already tested to make sure that it is working correctly) to the WAN "O" port on the TC.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the screen and wait a minute for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click directly on Time Capsule.
(The example below shows an AirPort Express. You will see Time Capsule instead of AirPort Express)
AirPort Setup will open automatically and take a minute to analzye the network, then announce that the TC will be configured to "extend" the network.
Enter a device name that you want to use for the Time Capsule and click Next
You should now see a message that the TC is being configured to "extend" the network "using Ethernet"
Wait another minute. When you see the messge of Setup Complete, click Done.   That's it.

  • Airport Time Capsule causing Dropping Wifi/Internet on other computers on my network

I have 2 gen time capsule thats causing all my other computers in house to loose wifi.
    Its running the latest firmware.
At the moment i leave it unpluged whitch seems to work, but really would love to have it up and running.
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Do a factory reset..
When you do the setup again, change all the names in the TC to short, 2-20 characters with no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
That does mean setting up wireless again on each device but that is one of the things that can help.
Make sure you use WPA2 Personal security with password of 8-20 characters.. more if you are paranoid type.
Again mix of upper and lower case and numbers but stick to pure alphanumeric.
If the clients still do the same thing, change the wireless to fixed channels.
Please also test by using a computer via ethenret to see that the TC is still actually working and it is only wireless that is affected.
    The Factory Reset.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.

  • Time capsule causes extremely slow internet

I have an 2011 Apple time capsule running firmware 7.6.4 (latest as far as I know). Recently its begun acting up. Once the modem (a Motorolla SB6121) is restarted and the time capsule is restarted, wifi devices receive the full 100Mbps for approximately 2 minutes. Then the network degrades to hardly 1Mbps. It becomes virtually unusable. With intermittent dropped connections all together. I can confirm its the TC (all is fine on a direct connection from the modem), and I've tried factory resetting TC. The symptoms continue. I've even gotten a new router (it was happening before with a Motorolla SB2100 as well), and the same problem exists.
I'm not sure if its relevant, but it happened around the time Comcast informed us they were increasing our internet speed to about 105Mbps.
    Any suggestions?

The TC is definitely having issues with the motorola modems..
This one is a bit complicated due to Mavericks.
You can set the WAN port speed on the TC to 100mbit which seems to help for some people.
You can do that using an old fashioned crossover ethernet cable or a small 10/100 switch between the TC and the modem.
In the old utility you can still set the WAN port speed to 100mbit full or half duplex
This is easy to do if you still have a computer running windows, hence older v5 utility.
Mavericks removed the ability to easily run the v5 utility but there is a work around.
    http://coreyjmahler.com/2013/10/24/airport-utility-5-6-1-on-os-x-10-9-mavericks/
You must follow those instructions exactly.
No luck then replace the TC as the main router.
Buy a normal standard router.. eg TP-Link WDR3600 which should be around $70. (I pick this one as it can be run on 3rd party firmware like gargoyle which is far more useful than native firmware in most routers). And bridge the TC for use on the network as a WAP and Networked hard disk.

  • Why does Time Capsule cause my speaker to make noise

I just installed a Time Capsule.
I have a "base" speaker in proximity that has started to chirp.
Any way to stop the "interference" ?
    --Lawrence

You will need to move the devices further apart, or somehow try to block the wireless signals from the Time Capsule from reaching the subwoofer.
Make sure that the Time Capsule and subwoofer are not using the same electrical outlet or power strip.

  • Two Partitions on Time Capsule causing Time Machine error

    Hello
I have a 500Gb Time Capsule connected via Ethernet to my iMac. I run Adobe LightRoom and wanted to use the Time Capsule as a backup. I don't remember exactly what program I used but I was able to access the Time Capsule disk and set up a second partition which I labelled "Lightroom Backups" I set this as 50Gb and told LightRoom to use this as a backup volume.
This appeared to work but now I am getting an error message that Time Machine backup failed, target volume too small. It would appear that the Time Machine Backup is trying to write to the lightroom partition.
I have reset the Time Capsule to factory defaults but the 50GB "Lightroom Backups" is still there and does in fact contain 2 folders (backups.backup.db and a folder with a date label)
The thing is that I cannot remember how I managed to partition the disk in the first place.
Anyone have any ideas as to how to overcome this?
    Thank You

you have to be in the minority. The only way to partition is to pull the drive out of TC and use Disk Utility.

  • Airport Time Capsule Caused iPhone Wifi Gray Out

My new Airport Time Capsule (2 TB) and my MacBook Pro connect via wifi, but my iPhone 4S (iOS 6.1.3 upgrade months ago - no problems) did not detect my TC.   The iPhone wifi icon disappeared while I was looking for my TC in the list of wifi signals and wifi is now grayed out in my iPhone Settings.  I tried the various remedies for wifi gray out many people apparently experienced upon iOS 6.1.3 upgrade, but none worked, not even delete/restore.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Has anyone heard of this happening during TC setup?  Thanks.

Apple claims the Airport Time Capsule had nothing to do with the iPhone gray out issue, which they say is an out of warranty iPhone hardware issue. The apparent solution is to purchase a new iPhone 4s for $199.
I had my iPhone a little over 500 days. Let's call it 500 even, which is 720,000 minutes or 43,200,00 seconds.
Qs: What is the probability that a wifi hardware flaw unrelated to my attempt to establish a wifi link to the TC would materialize in the very minute of a link attempt? What is the probability of witnessing the resulting the gray out the very second it occurred?
(I know some of you are thinking the probabilities are 100% for me. Very funny.)

  • Best practice to use Time capsule for back-up of 3 different products (MBP 15 OSX lion, MBP 13 OSX lion and MBA 13 OSX mountain lion)?. Only the MBP15 is back-up regularly.

When I want to save data of the MBA13 on mountain lion (wireless) with time capsule, hois there any best practice to perform?
After that, assuming that data are back-up, can we easily differentiate data in time capsule belonging to MBP15/13 and MBA13?

Unfortunately, Apple left off the Ethernet port....the most important port in networking....on the MBA, so your first backup of the entire Mac will need to be done using wireless.
That may take a day or two unless your MBA has a Thunderbolt port on it in which case you could add a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter and connect the MBA to the Time Capsule for the first backup using an Ethernet cable.  It will probably only take 3-4 hours or less doing it this way.
Once you have the first complete backup done, other subsequent backups can be done using wireless since they will ony take a few minutes, on average.
Both Macs will backup to the Time Capsule using Time Machine automatically. Backups will be kept completely separate, so one Mac will normally only be able to "see" its own backups.

Your underpowered system may get by if you edit SD DV material, but is way out of its league when editing AVCHD or Red or DSLR material.
Without further info to go on, you have the following problems:
    Not enough memory
    No dedicated nVidia video card
    Insufficient PSU
    No hard disks
About the only thing good about your system is the CPU, but there it ends. Everything else needs to be improved. How much depends on your source material, your workflow, your destination format and all those data were severely missing.
