Time Capsule compatibility with network (ethernet) printer

Does TC support connecting a network printer (all in one) via an ethernet connection?
The manual doesn't show anything on this just usb descriptions. I have Time Capsule mainly used as a router connected to my modem. 1 Imac, 2 wireless mac laptops, and 1 wireless pc using the network - no problems w/internet or file sharing etc. However, I don't see through airport utility that there is any spot to set up network printer just USB. I would like to use my Brother MFC-5840cn to network print and scan to folders. Please help solve this question if you can. Previously I did this with a linksys router. Thanks!

In my HP example, the HP printer driver does provide access to a number of features particular to this printer model. Most manufacturers include an installation CD that provide useful utilities ... albeit most are written for Windows. I would suggest checking out the Brother support site to see if they have Mac-specific drivers or utilities.

Is it possible to use a wireless USB hub with the Time Capsule? I am thinking of using a Belkin wireless USB hub, which would have the USB receiver/antenna for the hub connected to the TC, and my printer connected to the hub.

My reason for doing this is because I want to keep my wireless printing capabilities, but I want to move the TC downstairs and "bridge" it with my AT&T U-Verse wireless router/modem. At the moment I am not able to have my TC and router/modem in the same room.
My thinking is that this will not work because the TC will not recognize that type of USB device (i.e. the USB receiver/antenna for the hub). But if this works this would solve a great deal of logistic problems.

Time Machine and Time Capsule - Failing with Network Problem

My problems with TM/TC have been ongoing for a couple of months now and I am going round in circles - need help.
This is the second post I have made, the first got lost in people suggesting the obvious - so I will try to be a little more specific if I can.
I will detail the current state first - i.e. where I am now - after I will list what I have done so far to get to this point.
Currently, my iMac (intel) is directly connected by Ethernet 1GB to the Time Capsule. The TC is then connected to a Netgear router which in turn is connected to Internet.
I have no network problems at all - internet connection is fine. the Netgear Router has the latest firmware version and is working fine. The porblems i have are nothing to do with this.
The time Capsule is in Bridge mode and getting a reserved dhcp IP address from the Netgear router.
The Time Capsule has been fully reset - i.e. power cable out, hold the reset button, plug in power cable (spark, spark), hold reset button, fast blink for 20 seconds or so, light goes out, release button.
I have re-applied the latest Time Capsule firmware.
I have renamed the disk on the Time Capsule.
I have renamed my iMac and deleted all the time capsule entries from Keychain.
I have re-installed Mac OSX and re-updated to the latest 10.5.6 release.
At the moment I have kicked off a backup with a lot of large files - like music folder, video folder etc excluded. I also have parallels and have excluded the disk image. I have 1 other 50GB disk image which is also excluded.
I am expecting the first initial backup will complete successfully.
I will then remove music and video from exclusions and allow them to backup. I am expecting this will complete no problem. (I do this because the upcoming problem will happen if I move away from the machine - and I dont want to sit there for 2 days).
So up to this point TM and TC have performed flawlessly. The issue that follows started happening before the 10.5.6 update after backing up with no issues for months. At this point I will be able to use TM to browse the backup and restore files. I will be able to mount the sparse bundle and browse files. Spotlight reports no issues and indexes quickly.
If I leave my machine after a successful backup and the hourly update kicks in it will fail with 'A Network problem' basically saying the backup has filed because of a network problem, but is not any more specific, logs show far too much to put the whole thing here, but the following is an excerpt

It goes on and on and is repeated every hour. For each one I get an error message on screen saying backup failed due to a network error. However I have tried a manual download over the same period set at an extremely slow rate so that it was downloading during this time and it showed no errors. I.e. the network connection from imac, through TC to netgear and out to internet - and monitored this while time machine showed these errors (i.e. at the same time) and this showed no connection problems at all and completed succesfully.
I know TM uses an internal address to do backups, but uses the same cable and network card to get the job done. I am simply removing the cable as a source of issue although I have also replaced this making no difference.
Applecare are involved and have so far been sent 2 sets of logs and so far have not been able to find the cause. New TC is on its way to try that, although they think it is something on the imac that is causing this.
Sleep mode is turned off although screen sleep is on. The tick is not in the box for putting hard drives to sleep whenever possible.
Now, after this has happened, and back at the machine. I restart both imac and TC. Try running a backup, spotlight starts to re-index - i.e. will mount the backup volume and start the index process, gets to about 90% then fails - again excerpts from log

I am trying to use my HP wireless printer with the time capsule. It is not working. Is it compatible?

Yes, it should be ok..
BUT the rest of the WORLD speaks SMB.. as in fact does iOS.. and so you need to make things look nice to SMB.. in other words windows type networking.
By default the TC seems to end up with names which are wrong..
Use short names with no apostrophe.. or any other special character.. pure alphanumeric.. no spaces..
Passwords also .. nothing more than 20 characters.. names do not need to be long, 8-12 pure alphanumeric is plenty.
eg I name my TC.. TC
Name 2.4ghz wireless, TC24ghz
Name 5ghz wireless TC5ghz (I recommend this to keep them separate and prevent auto swapping)
Lock the channel (This is optional but I find helps stability.. mainly for 2.4ghz.. there are three channels.. 1, 6, 11) Try each channel in turn.
Plug the printer into the computer by usb and run through the setup.
Put the wireless into infrastructure mode and put in the wireless name and security settings and passkey.
Complete the printer setup wizard and then disconnect the usb.. it might well be a good idea to restart everything.. Make sure the printer is in a position where there is good wireless signal.
Now what I found happens is the printer driver is confused by the fact you had it plugged in by usb. So see if the printer is accessible now.. if not delete the printer and start again.. it should pick it up now as a network printer.
I don't know what model printer you have so to get all the specifics right read the instructions.. You know that old saying.. when all else fails.. and after you post on the forum.. actually read the instructions.

On the disk page, turn on the guest account and set the correct workgroup name.. usually WORKGROUP.
When you open the TC, type into the windows explorer address bar.
\\TCIPADDRESS or \\TCName.
where you replace those placeholders with the actual ip address or actual name..
And remember windows is backwards.. uses back not forward slash.. which everything else uses.

I'm interested in getting a TC for a wireless router, printer sharing, and backup for a MacBook Pro and Windows Vista and Windows 7 computers. I have heard troubles with Windows 7. My question is: What are the compatibilities of the TC with Windows XP, Vista, and 7? Can I wirelessly backup without a big hassle? Also, can you be almost certain a connected printer to the TC will function with XP, Vista, and 7 (as long as the printer is PC compatible)?

There are only two areas that I'm aware of: 1) For all Windows OSs, configuring and connecting to a wireless network, encrypted with the WEP standard is somewhat "tricky." Most folks who have connectivity problems from Windows clients, report issues related to WEP, and 2) File sharing for Vista & Win7. There has been a number of issues reported by Windows Vista & Win7 users of having difficulties either accessing the TC's file sharing service or having difficulties with transferring large files. The jury is still out, but it appears the issue is around the version of the SMB protocol implemented with the newer Windows OSs and that implemented by Apple on the TC (or AirPort Extreme). A number of solutions have been forwarded (which has worked for some), but a permanent solution is still forthcoming.
Can I wirelessly backup without a big hassle?
You will need a PC backup solution that provides the capability to back up to network drives. The Mac's Time Machine feature is not available for PCs. One such product is Genie-soft's Genie Backup.
Also, can you be almost certain a connected printer to the TC will function with XP, Vista, and 7 (as long as the printer is PC compatible)?
Full printer functionality will also depend on, whether or not, the USB port on the TC will "support" it. It is a known fact that the TC's USB port will NOT support the "advanced" (copying, scanning, or faxing) functions of multi-function printers. Similarly, some maintenance functions (i.e., ink-level) are not supported as well. Printers that are either Ethernet or wireless capable should not be an issue.

Weird: why would a network drive named "time-capsule-de" with an icon of an old-fashioned PC monitor appear on my home network?

Weird: why would a network drive with the name "time-capsule-de" and an icon of an old-fashioned PC monitor suddenly appear on my home network?
It happened shortly after I'd set up a new Time Capsule with our iMac and had transferred the configuration for it over from my old Time Capsule.
I'd just taken the old Time Capsule into another room and powered it up with my MacBook to confirm that Airport Utility's wiping of its settings hadn't affected the old Time Machine backups still stored in it.
I was in the process of tinkering to see how I could use the old Time Capsule, when Airport Utility offered to "extend" my home network, so I tried that setting, and then got a warning that the old Time Capsule and its wifi networks were not yet secure or private. While I was working to fix that, I noticed that in the Finder sidebar and in my Network settings, this mysterious "time-capsule-de" (with an odd old-fashioned PC monitor for an icon) had appeared. I tried to click on it, but could not access it. I also could not eject it. I shut down my old Time Capsule and my MacBook. When I turned the laptop back on, "time-capsule-de" was gone.
What do you all make of that? Should I worry about the security of my home network? I live in an apartment development, so there are more than a dozen stray wifi signals pouring in from other units.
I'd welcome any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks!

What is the name of your old Time Capsule? Did you change the name to the new one?
It appears in Finder .. that is to be expected.. it is after all a network drive.. and it has PC symbol more than likely because you are using Mavericks which defaults to SMB network.. ie the computer thinks it is a windows computer.
There is nothing bad or sinister going on.. but you certainly need to ensure your own wireless network is secure..
That is otherwise all fine.
If the TC shows up again, check that it is also in the airport utility and check its MAC address with the label on the bottom.. It will show in the Utility .. then you can compare and check you are reading the right thing.

How can I get the HP Photosmart C5580 working fine with time capsule?

I am having a similar problem as this person. I have a HP Photosmart 3210. I figured out that I could not use the scanner with the USB on the Time Capsule so I connected the printer via the ethernet port on the Time Capsule to make it a networking printer. This allowed me to see the printer and scanner, but I still can not get the scanner to work. I have all the software updates for Mac and HP. When I go to scan the software says "Trying to Open session with device" and after 30 seconds it will say "Failed to open session with device". I know the software works because if I connect the printer directly into my compute with USB everything is good. Also, if I go into the Embedded Web Server (while printer is connected to Time Capsule with Ethernet) of the printer I can perform a Preview and I will see the scan of the item in the scanner, but I still can not scan. Any ideas? I have to talked to both HP and Apple without any ideas.

I'm having this same issue with my 2008 MacBook running 10.7.5. Reading some other forums, it seems as if Lion knocked out wireless compatibility with network printers...
I have rebooted my machine, uninstalled and reinstalled all my drivers and continue to have this issue while not having the same issue with my Dell (work issued) laptop. First time a PC has ever performed better than my Mac.

I still have questions about how to connect the Brother printer through ethernet. When connected does the airport utility have some area where you can identify the printer as a network printer as opposed to USB?
The AirPort Utility would only come into play if the printer was attached to the TC's USB port. Printers, attached by Ethernet, would have to "network-ready." Controlling these types of printers would be through the printer driver that you would access through the operating system interface.
In my HP example, the HP printer driver does provide access to a number of features particular to this printer model. Most manufacturers include an installation CD that provide useful utilities ... albeit most are written for Windows. I would suggest checking out the Brother support site to see if they have Mac-specific drivers or utilities.

Time capsule as a network client

I previously had my time capsule (A1409) hard wired to an ethernet cable on my second floor with a printer attached to it.
I now have a new Bell Fibe wireless modem suppling my TVs with a wireless signal from the main floor.
Can I set up my time capsule as a network client and leave it up on the second floor with the printer? Does does the T.C. need to be hard wired with an ethernet cable to work? I would like to avoid moving the printer and capsule down to the main floor.

It can be done but is highly not recommended.. The reason is you will actually cause the TC to become not just a network client.. but a totally dumb one.. No WAP function, no ethernet function. So backups to the hard disk will be slow as molasses in winter.
You may as buy a cheap as chips wireless print share device.. or cheap old extreme or express.. why waste a TC to do the work of a $10 device.

How to connect a time capsule to another network

I have recently moved to an area that has no landline system, all ISP's are provided through a wireless router. How should I connect the timecapsule into such a network?

Unfortunately, the Time Capsule was not designed for this type of operation.
Ask the network administrator if they can provide you with, or recommend a wireless to Ethernet bridge, so that the Time Capsule can receive the Ethernet signal that it wants.
It might be possible to configure the Time Capsule to "join" the wireless network in Bridge Mode.......but, even if that might be possible, the big downside here is that you would be setting up what is known as a "double hop" wireless situation with the Time Capsule.

How can I access the time capsule hard drive via ethernet?

I recently bought a new laptop, as my old one was sadly stolen. I'm trying to connect to my backed up time capsule hard drive via ethernet to retrieve my files, but it doesn't seem to work. Oddly enough I have no issues over wifi. When I switch from wifi to ethernet, it gives me an error message stating that the disk was not found in the network. I have a MacBook Air with an ethernet adapter if that makes any difference. I'm also running the latest OS X and firmware. Wifi is simply too slow for this restoration process, so any suggestions?
Could I possibly connect via USB? What kind of cable would that require? Is the ethernet issue a problem with my settings?

How are you doing that switching? When you switch to Ethernet do you have connectivity to the Internet? If not, do you see a tiny green light on the Time Capsule next to the Ethernet socket you're using?

The key to what you seem to want to do is to be able to get Apple's Time Capsule router to "join" the network that your Conceptronic router. I believe that works with some third-party routers, but I've never seen a list of those that work in such a configuration and I have no experience with Conceptronic equipment.
You might be better off with a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device instead of a Time Capsule.

Time Capsule and all in one printer HP Photosmart C4280

I recently got me a Macbook pro finally. Its awesome!! I love it. Im looking to get Time Capsule or something like that. I want to be able to hook my printer up to something and print from other room. I want to print wirelessly...the scanning and copying feature really doesnt bother me not to have.
Any know if the Time Capsule works with the HP Photosmart C4280. I got this printer with my computer. Its a multi function printer.
The backup feature is neat, but its not as important to me...Im sure it will be if I never lose my hard drive.
Anyone have any advice? Anyone have the HP Photosmart C4280 printer running on time capsule or any other wireless device in order to print wirelessly? Thanks

Hi Amy,
It should work just fine as a printer. I have a similar setup, and printing works, but I can't scan or fax across the network.
I'd probably recommend the Time Capsule over an Airport Extreme- your MBP can use it for Time Machine backups- untethered!
I've got one on order for our Mac notebooks.
Oh yeah: we have an HP Printer, too. Works fine.
If you price out 500GB and 1TB drives and wireless N routers, I think you'll see that Time Capsule is a pretty good deal.
