Time Capsule connected to Netgear WNDR3700 via Ethernet - Questions/Recommendations

The more I research this the more confused I have become
As I already had my Netgear router when I got my TC I just connected the TC to the Netgear router via ethernet and all was well but other matters I was looking at led me down this path and now I have some questions:
1) From what I have read this is probably why my "wake for network access" is not working (because Netgear is main router)?
2) is there any advantage to having 2 routers, it appears that I have 2 options for WiFi connections in this configuration, is this true?...if so should I have the TC as the main router and then connect the Neatgear to it?

Is the TC in bridge mode.. if it is double NAT it will certainly not pass wake on lan packets.
Not all routers pass wake on lan packets correctly. As is often the case you might find apple use a different system.. so even if set correctly it still won't pass them.. or visa versa.. the netgear won't pass the apple magic packet.

You do not ever want 2 routers.. working as routers..
There is nothing wrong with having two routers but one is setup in bridge or WAP mode or if it doesn't have any of those then WAN BYPASS. ie you must use it as a WAP and switch only and bypass all routing function .. this is trivial to achieve.. simply plug in by LAN .. with IP set statically to same IP range as the main router but usually outside the dhcp scope.. and with dhcp turned off so you have no conflict in dhcp.
The end result is you may then setup wireless in a any number of ways.. but primary method is roaming.. which is actually apple recommended method.
Both routers use the identical wireless name = SSID. Identical security settings and password.
What makes the two different is channels.. they should be on non-overlapping channels. Mostly leaving things on auto works but sometimes people find it is better to manually set.
The alternative is to have two different wireless networks.. this can also work if you need to set up some clients to one device.. eg the TC for backups.. as that will cause network slowdown for other clients that need fast internet connection.. so you can take charge and split the load between Time Machine users and non-TM users.

I get duplicate IPs error messages (no connection) sometimes when trying to connect devices to the wireless network. How do I fix? Sometimes devices cannot connect to the network because of conflicting IPs. I look on the Motorola and every device has a unique IP assigned but occasionally a device has taken the IP of another device. I have been writing down all the devices and the IPs they have been using. It happens more with PCs than Macs, ipads or iPhones.

If the Time Capsule is set up correctly in bridge mode, then it is the responsibility of the Motorola modem/router to provide the correct IP address assignments for all devices on the network.
Check to insure that the Time Capsule is correctly set up to operate in bridge mode as follows:
On your Mac, open AirPort Utility
Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Network tab at the top of the next window
Insure that the setting for Router Mode is configured to read "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Once you have confirmed that the Time Capsule is configured correctly, everything else is the responsibility of the Motorola modem/router as far as network routing and IP address assignments for devices.
If you continue to have IP address issues, then you should contact the Internet Service Provider (ISP) that provided the Motorola device to you and ask them to fix the issue.

Time Capsule to Extreme to Express via Ethernet Connection ?

Recently purchased all three to help simplify my Home/Business network but having issues connecting and communicating between all three.
Whole home is hard wired for ethernet in every room so I assume this would be the fastest method of linking all three together but would also like all three to broadcast wireless for full property coverage. I beleive I am using airport utility 5.6.1 for setup. I am working on Windows 7 machine.
Setup so far is:
Motorola Cable Modem with Charter Service to Wan Port of Time capsule (Seems to all work well)
Then in other room/level Airport Extreme with ethernet from time capsule to Wan Port of Extreme
and this is the point where I lose it... I haven't even gotten to the Express on the basement level..
Could anyone chime in with more understandable instruction on both hard wire configuration and software using
airport utility?
Or maybe point in right direction? What other info needed?

The roaming document explains adequately how to setup... at least the principle of it.
It isn't hard at all..
One device is the main router.. You create a wireless network from this router.
All other devices are bridged.. (that is router bridge not wireless bridge)
They all get IP address from the main router.
All of them create a wireless network..
if you want roaming you simply use the same name SSID (wireless name in apple speak).. same security setting WPA2 Personal = WPA2 AES and password.
But you can setup different networks if you want.
Channels are supposed to sort themselves out automagically.. but I don't believe in voodoo.. try voodoo first and if it fails, no biggie.. set manual wireless channels.. set simple short names no spaces pure alphanumeric.
It is perhaps new for you and the lack of html setup is a pain.. but it isn't hard to do. Apple have cut back the number of options to barest min to do the job.
Come back and ask specific questions if you run into trouble. We have some very clued up people here.. who spend their life energy answering the same question every day with a cheerful attitude.. never seen the like.. on a windows forum you would be told to RTFM.

Use Time Capsule as a Hard Drive via Ethernet for Time Machine

Hi Folks
To summarise a very very long story here goes;
- About 12 months ago my father in law buys a Time Capsule without really knowing what it is for and how it works (I know don't ask!!!!!)
- I set it up for him connected to his wireless router so he uses his router to access the internet and uses the Time Capsule to back up his iMac via wireless with Time Machine. (from what I can see he could have saved himself some cash and just bought an external Hard Drive and connect it via USB to the iMac for Time Machine, but never mind. He has 1 iMac and no other Mac's in the household. His printer is connected to his iMac via USB in the same room and he uses a wireless router to access the internet, since the phone point is in another room)
- All is well until Monday when he tells me he cannot access the internet. After much much trial and error I have eventually managed to get his internet back up and running, but he has somehow managed to erase his Time Capsule.
- I set his Time Capsule back up as it was previously and it starts performing the initial backup again. However at the rate its taking I think it will take well in excess of 24hrs to do that initial
backup. Also so far It has failed 3 times during this initial backup and I get an error message stating it's failed. The setup guide makes reference to performing the initial backup via ethernet as it's quicker.
I'm thinking the best way forward would be to just plug the Time Capsule into the iMac via ethernet and use it purely as a Hard Drive for use with Time Machine. I've tried just plugging in the ethernet cable from the Time Capsule to the iMac, but it doesn't recognise it. Bear in mind that it currently works via wireless, do I need to perform some sort of factory reset or how do I go about telling the the iMac to no longer use the Time Capsule wireless, but just connect via ethernet instead.
Of course I could just forget about the Time Capsule all together and tell him to get a 500gb USB External Hard Drive, plug that in and set up Time Machine with that instead.
Am I missing the point here and can the Time Capsule do a lot more for him, given his current setup.

That is true but if you mix your files with the Time Machine backups, Time Machine will have trouble contril disk space when it gets low.
If you are going to do that it is recommended that you partition the drive. Since Time Capsule is not able to partition the drive that means you will have to remove it in order to partition it.
A simple solution IMO is to get another external drive and hang it on the USB bus in the Time Capasule.

Time Capsule vs. Airport Express via Ethernet

Air;ort Express is connected to a DSL modem with an Ethernet cable. Time Machine is in turn connected directly to my MacBook Pro, again by Ethernet. Obviously something here is wrong, since the Time Machine persist in showing a blinking yellow light.
I think that this used to work but no longer. How did I sdrew up?

Does that in turn suggest that I should connect the Time Capsule directly to Airport Express?
when possible always run ethernet.. it is fast and reliable.. only when there is no other choice use wireless to link routers.. it is always poor.
You can use wireless from laptop to the Express or the TC.. that is fine.. but keep the wireless usage to something close and just once.. no double hop over wireless.
If you have ethernet there, use it.
Simply put the TC in bridge mode.. that is router bridge.
And make sure you are creating a wireless network on the TC.. same name and same security setting and password as the Express.. then the laptop can connect to whichever it is nearest to.
If you need complete diagrams or screenshots just ask.

Connecting time capsule to wireless modem router via ethernet cable

I use my TC to store all my data and itunes music/media. I've noticed that when purchasing music, the download speeds are quite slow, even though when I test the broadband speed, it's at a reletively ok 5 mbps. If I hard wire the tc to the modem router, will the downloads be faster? If so, how do I connect them up with ethernet cable. I've done so, and nothing seems to appearing on my desktop.

Reset the TC to factory settings. This will allow you to reconfigure the TC to use Ethernet.

Time Capsule DHCP (with Netgear DGN3500)

I have tried, inconsistently for months, to figure out the best setup for my home network.
1. I'll try to describe what I have at the moment:
i. A Netgear DGN3500 which acts as a modem (connects to adsl phone socket in wall), and a wire/less router. The netgear broadcasts a wireless network (SSID: "712 2.4GHz") and is also connected to my Time Capsule via ethernet cable. The netgear acts as a DHCP server, providing address from 192.168.3.3 - 192.168.3.9. The netgear has a static lan ip address of 192.168.3.1.
ii. My Time Capsule (connected to the internet via netgear modem via ethernet) is currently in "DHCP only" mode. The TC has a static IP address of 192.168.3.2 and provides via DHCP a range of addresses from 192.168.3.10 - 192.168.3.200. The TC also broacasts 2 wireless networks, one in 2.4GHz mode (SSID: "712 2.4GHz") and another in 5GHz mode (SSID: "712 5GHz"). Radio mode and channels are all set to "Automatic".
2. Ok. Let me explain what I've tried to achieve here.
I want to roam around my home without having to worry about wireless signal or ip addresses etc. So the idea is that I can be in my bedroom (closest to the netgear) and surf the web on my iphone/macbook pro using an ip address provided by the netgear's DHCP server, then walk into my living room (closer to the TC) and swicth to an IP address provided by the TC's DHCP server and continue surfing the web on my iphone/macbook pro without losing signal strength.
3. My problem is this:
When swicthing between routers/wlans/ip adrresses/etc. from my living room to my bedroom (ie. when swicthing between the TC and the netgear), the process is almost seamless. However, when I switch the other way around, from the netgear near my bedroom to the TC in my living room, it takes more than a few minutes for the correct IP address to be served to the iphone/macbook pro and I find that I can't connect to the internet (except via 3G on my iphone) until it sorts itself out, after clicking the "Renew DHCP lease" a hundred times, or disabling and enabling wireless on my iphone/macbook pro a hundred times. It's baffling to me why it works (quickly) in one direction but not the other.
4. What I have done, that also didn't work:
Most forum posts have suggested that the TC should simply be left in "bridge mode". I did this too. It worked (or rather didn't) in exactly the same way as I described above. The only difference, unless I'm mistaken, was that the netgear was the exclusive DHCP sever and provided the full range of IP addresses. It did indeed do this via the TC (via ethernet) as well, but also just as slowly.
Help.

I agree with Bob.. the problem is the TC is setup not in bridge not in router.. it is in fairy land.. it has to be bridge or router to work properly.. otherwise the Netgear as the primary router has no idea what IP address the device is that wirelessly connects to the TC.. and the TC cannot route the connection correctly because it isn't a router. (watch the arp table if available in the netgear or list of clients and in the TC from a computer open the advanced, log, wireless clients, in a computer, then as you roam you will see where the iphone is showing up.)
A few points.. again what Bob says about sticking with Apple products is probably true.. Apple wireless provides some details PC world doesn't.. eg country. It is also roaming which will never work as well in mixed product environment.
Are there spaces in the SSID? That is again a no no in the PC world. Even if you don't use PC's the Netgear is not designed primarily for Macs.
I would set SSID, and all the names of devices.. short.. straight alphanumeric.. no spaces.
I would also lock channels on at least one device.. two routers set to auto channel leads to chaos.. but I would lock both.. for 2.4ghz there are only three non-overlapping channels, 1, 6 and 11.
Use as much space as possible.. so 1 on the netgear and 11 on the TC.
Solution might also be to buy a Airport Extreme or Express and plug it into the netgear and turn off its wireless. Stick with Apple on Apple.. it does work better.

Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.

I've recently acquired a time capsule and was wondering if i could use it to share a wireless internet connection via ethernet to my non-wireless (windows 7) pc?
My current situation is that i have a wireless modem/router that shares my internet connection wirelessly with my mac mini.
I have a pc without a wireless card that i want to connect to the wireless network so i was wondering if it was possible to attach the pc and the time capsule with an ethernet cable, then connect the time capsule to the wireless network and share the internet connection with the pc.
Can anyone tell me if this is possible, and if so how?

Welcome to the discussion area!
IF...your wireless network is now being created by another Apple "n" router like an AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express or Time Capsule, it would be possible to do what you want to do.
But the Time Capsule would not be compatible for what you want if your wireless is created by another manufacturer's router. The Time Capsule could "join" this wireless network so that backups would occur over wireless. However, when the Time Capsule is configured this way, the ethernet ports on the device are not active, so this would not help with the ethernet connection that your computer needs.
A new AirPort Express 802.11n would do what you want. It has the capability of joining virtually any wireless network and the ethernet port can be enabled using the ProxySTA feature, so it would work for your purpose.

When I input my password at the prompt to enter network preferences, all the lights go green (ie... ethernet, ISP etc.) and the connection re-establishes immediately and states "the connection appears to be working normally".
It more of a nuisance than anything and seems to have started ocurring over the past couple of months. I also have a windows XP box also connected to the same cable modem that I never have internet connectivity issues with. I've verified all the physical aspects of the connections and can't see any evidence of any actual drops in the modem logs. I suspect it is just an intermittent communication loss between the Imac and the Time Capsule, but I am not very familiar with Mac equipment yet.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem and what you did (if anything) to resolve it?

The AirPort Express will connect to your existing wireless network if the network is using WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security settings.
So, it can join the network as a client and then provide an Ethernet signal to your Time Capsule.
Be sure to configure the Time Capsule to operate in Bridge Mode so that it will be operating on the same network.

Make sure that the Att Modem goes to the netgear router via ethernet cable. Then connect your Apple Tv with a ethernet cable to the back of the net gear router. Airplay wants it to both be connected to the same device, usually.

Time Capsule Connection Help Needed (Flashing Amber)

I've been trying to troubleshoot my Time Capsule connection for a week now and I have had zero luck.
I have a Imac with OSX 10.6.8 that uses AirPort v 5.6.1. I have a Cat-5 (ethernet cable) plugged from my Time Capsule port (looks like this <-->) into an available port in my cable mode/router. My Imac is also plugged into this router. The two cat-5 (ethernet) cables are side by side.
So....
Every time I plug in the Time Capsule I get the following prompt via AirPort.
AirPort Utility found a Time Capsule 802.11n (4th Generation) that is
reporting problems.
Time Capsule's Name : My Capsule
          IP Address: 10.0.1.1
          Versino: 7.6.1
          AirPort ID: 12:88:93:CC:FF:72
If this is not the AirPort wireless devise you want to setup you can select another from the list on the left. If you don't see it make sure.... Blah blah blah....
To make a long story tollerable I do see my Time Capsule on the left at the top. Its the only one and its selected by default. So I do the next logical thing right? I click "Continue" and AirPort reads the Time Capsule's configuration.... and then...... I get the error
An error occurred while reading the configuration.
Make sure your Apple Wi-Fi base station is plugged
in and in range of your computer or connected via
Ethernet and try again. (-6753)
Can anyone help me understand why I can grab the Time Capsule's IP Address but AirPort can not read the hardware's (Time Capsule) config?

Thanks man... Yes, I plugged it into the circle symbol with no joy. I also went to Wal Mart and baught a new seven foot cat-5 for $10. Again I still have the flashing amber light.
After plugging in the ethernet cable into the circle icon port AirPort returns the following prompt.
I reset the TC (ball point pen to the reset hole untill fast blinking amber light occurs) and entered the needed params and it returns this error.
An error occured close the configuation window and try again.
It must be a config parameter that I'm setting incorrectly. There's a bunch so who knows what I'm doing wrong.
I just need the to talk to my Imac so i can get a backup executed. A wireless connection will take too long.
FYI: The cat-5 is brand new and is 100% functional (green light on the TC and router.)

The best software to do what you want, is not on a Mac. It is a router.. gargoyle.
You can keep using the TC as wifi source but get a router that can can take gargoyle firmware.. the best in my testing is netgear WNDR3700. Gargoyle itself is a free download.

There are other routers and router boards it will work on.. but make sure you pick something compatible. I have used several different routers and the one above is the best so far.

Connect mac with tc via ethernet for tm backups

I know there's probably already an answer to this question, but I just can't find it.
I normally connect to my time capsule via wifi, but I've been on holiday and made no backups, so now it would take ages. that's why I'd like to do it via ethernet.
If I plug the ethernet cable into the tc and the macbook, I can see the connection in the network setup, but it still does the backup via wifi. And if I turn the wifi of, the time capsule connection is gone.
I already managed to change the setting of the time capsule to ethernet once, but that was under the old airport version. With the airport 6.0 and higher, I don't know how to do this.

Don't touch the existing utility.. just install the new one.. both will list in utilities folder.. only start the one you want.

When I connect my macbook pro via ethernet to the 2wire all is ok, but as soon as i connect the power pc. . . .reset. I have emailed 2wire support. They recommended using a different patch cable. Tried that.. .. anyone else having this issue???? Any help would be appreciated. . .

Search the discussions for issues with 2wire dsl routers. This has come up before in a discussion I've been involved with, but probably not to do with the MDD. I do remember it being a design issue with the router, something that was done to it before dispatch.
Let us know if you can't find it and we'll have a look.
If you afford it, bin the 2wire and go buy something decent like a Netgear.
