Time Capsule crashes when Time Machine starts a backup

I've not searched through the postings here to see if other people have seen a similar problem. I've not attempted to repeat the problem I've seen here so I'm not very clear about the cause.
I'm using a MacBook Pro with OS 10.5.4 connected via a network cabled directly to a Time Capsule which is connected to a DSL/Cable modem. The Time Capsule is updated with v 7.3.2 of the firmware. I've got Time Machine enabled but I'm also using the Time Capsule disk (1TB) to store photos that I've previously archived to CD. I'm in the process of copying all the data from CD to the Time Capsule.
Having copied some photo data to the Time Capsule I was trying out some photo cataloguing SW to see if it was any good (iPhoto is no good to me as I don't want to store photos on the local drive of my machine) - Kodak EasyShare v6.1. Having loaded some images into EasyShare I tried to use finder to search for the file names of some of the images to check that EasyShare was not copying images to my local drive. While I was doing this I think Time Machine tried to kick in and start doing a backup. I believe that Time Capsule crashed at this point. Finder froze and after I restarted it (via Force Quit not a re-boot) I discovered that I had no network connection and Mac OS couldn't see the Time Capsule under FInder or via AirPort Utility (the Time Machine backup also timed out and failed). Time Capsule just sat there with the disk spinning and a green light on the front as if all was OK. Actually - the disk just kept spinning (Time Capsule normally shuts down the drive after it is idle for a while). Because of this I'm pretty sure that Time Capsule had crashed.
I experimented with re-booting my Mac but still no network etc so I tried power cycling the Time Capsule and everything came back to life.
I'm guessing that my doing a search (or some other drive activity on Time Capsule) at the same time as Time Machine kicking in with a backup caused Time Capsule to crash.
Perhaps this is not a very interesting point if this problem is not repeatable but - well, I'd be interested to know if others have seen similar behavior...

I'm having a very similar problem and it is detrimental.
Here is the scenario: I have a 1TB Time Capsule as my primary router. I am able to perform backups on all but one of my machines. My iMac backs up via 1GB ethernet to the TC, my MacBookAir (60GB,SS) backs up via wireless N (270mb) and my other MacBookAir (80GB,IDE) also backs up via wireless N without any problems.
I used to use a 500mb external drive to backup my iMac but outgrew it, so I started backing up to the TC instead. No problems at all.
I also used to back up my Intel MacMini running Mac OS X Server 10.5.5 to a similar external hard-drive but haven't in a while.
I decided it finally made sense to backup ALL my Mac's to the same 1TB TimeCapsule but it's just not working out!
On the MacMini; I turn on TimeMachine, the TimeCapsule has been chosen as a backup location, it prepares backup for a moment, mounts the backup drive and then appears to begin backup up... No...! First I get a message the the TimeCapsule closed the connection, next I lose Internet connection across my entire network both wired and wireless and then the TimeCapsule light turns amber, flashes and essentially does a completel crash / reset and then comes back to life a few moments later. I can backup any other computer except the MacMini to the TimeCapsule without "crashing" it and it makes no sense! Every computer is completely up to date with all the latest patches and the TimeCapsule is running 7.3.2
I sure hope this gets resolved, seems like other people are pretty disgusted with the performance of the TimeCapsule with problems that have no resolution.

  • Time capsule crash when copying files from it

Hi, I'm trying to copy files from a time capsule to a windows 7 pc. When I do that the time capsule crashes. I can copy files from the windows 7 pc to the time capsule without problems. Has anybody got a clue? I just bought the time capsule, so it has the latest versions.

What do you see that you interpret as a Time Capsule crash?  You can use AirPort Utility to look at the log file of the Time Capsule.  Go into "Manual Setup", then invoke Base Station > Logs and Statistics.  There might be a message in the log that helps explain the problem.

  • Time Capsule error when interrupting a regular hourly backup

Okay... So it's supposedly common knowledge that if you interrupt an hourly Time Capsule backup (not the big initial one) by putting your Macbook to sleep, the next time you wake your computer up Time Machine is supposed to just pick up where it left off. Right?
Not for me. I got Time Capsule right when it was released and it worked like a charm for a whole entire month... Until one day I made the mistake of interrupting one of its backups. When I got back to my computer I got an error saying the backup could not be completed. I thought it was no big deal until I actually tried to start a backup again. First it stayed on "Preparing" for a long time... Then a similar error message. I tried again and again and got nothing but error messages. Nothing I tried worked.
I decided to erase the Time Capsule disk and start over, essentially losing a month's worth of backups. Once again it worked for a few days until once again I put my Mac to sleep while it was doing a regular backup. Once again, coming back to my computer resulted in an error message. Once again it couldn't recover no matter what I did. I decided to try again from scratch, erased the drive, did the big backup.
Today, after three days of it working just fine, I had to leave my house in the middle of a backup. I paused for a moment wondering if I should do it, but then thought, what the ****, you're SUPPOSED to be able to interrupt it.
Um, no. Error message again. Except today I decided to run Disk Utility on it, which did work in reviving its backup abilities... HOWEVER something very strange happened. Spotlight started indexing the backup disk image-- something I'm pretty sure is not supposed to happen. It insisted on doing this every time I mounted the disk image, and only when it was finished indexing would it agree to dismount itself after backing up (like it's supposed to). Aside from that, Time Machine no longer asks for my password when I choose the Time Capsule disk... It just chooses it. It also doesn't alert me when I delete a file stored inside the Time Capsule disk (to tell me it will be permanently deleted) but instead sends it to the trash. And when recovering a file from Time Machine, the disk image doesn't dismount itself once it's done-- I have to do it manually.
In short, it's not acting normal, as far as I can tell.
    So my question is twofold:
    1) why the **** can't I interrupt the backup without getting an error? It's not supposed to work this way. Does this work for anyone else?
    2) What the **** happened to the disk image now that I've got it to work again? It backs up fine and everything but it's acting weird.
Thanks... Hope someone has any clue what this all means!

I have a very similar issue. Spotlight is now indexing the backup volume on Time Capsule, and it is taking forever.
Nobody else using Time Machine / Time Capsule here? I can't believe that.

  • Time Capsule Crashing When Trying to Access External HDD

Hi, I have a MBP and an iMac backing up successfully to a 1TB Time Capsule. I recently bought a 1 TB WD My Book external HDD which I attached to the USB port of the Time Capsule to archive all my digital media so that the TC could be used exclusively for backups.
The external HDD showed up under Airport Utility as well as as a partition under Time Capsule in the finder. The problem is whenever I tried to access the HDD it would freeze and crash the Time capsule which needed to be rebooted and restarted to work again. The funny thing is that on occasion I actually got the disk to work and I copied a few files across but within like a couple of minutes the Time Capsule hung and I got messaged that the file server in the Time Capsule and the External HDD was disconnected. Reconnection was only possible by powering off and restarting.
    Any suggestions? Much appreciated.

    I have the same problem.
    My Setup:
    Time Capsule 500 GB
    15" MBP 1.83 GHz
WD 250 GB USB Drive (Powered)
I run Time Machine backups to TC. This works without any problems and very quick I might add.
My problem is when I try to copy files to and from the External USB Drive to my MBP. The files will start to copy, then I lose the connection to the USB drive and the TC (no Internet connection as well).
To get the TC to work again, I need to power it down and power it back up.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Time capsule crashing when working directly from it

I use time capsule as a hard drive and back up disk. When working on a file that is saved on the time capsule, especially Adobe Photoshop, it freezes on spinning wheel and I have to do a hard restart.
The whole point in using time capsule as a hard drive is to free up as much space on my mac hard drive. I don't want to keep dragging and dropping whole folders to the desktop just to do small amendments.
Why is it doing this? Please help!
    Michelle.

I am afraid that you will not like the answer here, so maybe some other users will offer different opinions.
The Time Capsule is designed for your backups. It will not function well if you try to make it an everyday hard drive since it is a network drive. Access is much slower with this type of drive.
When working on a file that is saved on the time capsule, especially Adobe Photoshop, it freezes on spinning wheel and I have to do a hard restart.
Hopefully, these are not your "original" files. If so, can we ask how you are making backups of these files?
I don't know about Photoshop, but the experts in the iPhoto forum strongly warn against storing any "original" files on the Time Capsule disk because of the slow access and chances of corruption errors, which can damage the entire image library.
I do use Photoshop Elements, and would simply not consider locating the image library on my Time Capsule for the same reasons.
The whole point in using time capsule as a hard drive is to free up as much space on my mac hard drive.
Again, this unfortunately sounds like you have moved "original" files on your Mac over the Time Capsule drive.
When....not if...the Time Capsule drive has a problem, you will lose all of these files unless you are making backups of them on yet another hard drive.
But, since you need to have another hard drive anyway, you might consider this plan:
Move all of the image files and other data that you need for "everyday" use to the hard drive that is connected directly to your Mac. Access will be much faster and the errors will go away.
Plus....you can configure Time Machine to backup both your Mac and the hard drive.....so you have "originals" on one drive and backups on another.  That would be a safe backup strategy.

  • Why does Time Capsule echo when time machine backs up?

Every time time machine backs up I get horrid echo sounds from my Bose speakers which are attached to the computer.  I use Time Capsule and have for quite a while but this is a new problem - probably about two weeks since it started.  It is driving me nuts as it is loud.

There is always a low hum from TC which i dislike but I moved it so it is faint.
Bad.. very bad.. there should not be a low hum "always" from a TC.. If the hum is 50hz, 60hz 100hz or 120hz.. it is a power supply issue that probably just got worse. They do not hum in normal use.. there is a fault in the power supply.
Take it back to apple and get it replaced. Wipe it before you take it in.. they should exchange it.
In normal operation you can put your ear up against the TC.. and power it on..
The start up cycle goes like this.
Fan will immediately start up.. and front LED will flash momentarily green go off then begin flashing amber.
Fan will cut off and the hard disk will spin up.. this is several seconds into the boot cycle.
Hard disk will settle to normal operation.. disk test complete. TC will finish the boot. LED will go green (if everything is good).. after about 1min the disk will stop spinning. From this point the TC should make no noise at all. Audio noise at least. If you have internal power supply hum.. it has faulty transformer or some other part. Since it is under warranty pass it back for replacement.

  • Time capsule crash when i add external drive

    Hi all:
I have a time capsule that is running out of disk space. When I plug in a usb external drive, the time cap turns amber and all the wireless functions go off line.
Time capsule firm ware is up to date. Does anyone know what is wrong?

Is the drive 3 TB or less?
Is the external hard drive formatted correctly in Mac OS Exended (Journaled) or FAT32?
(Your Mac can read other formats, but the Time Capsule USB port will only read and write to the Mac format and FAT32).
If yes to both questions above, have you tried using a powered USB hub with the drive?

  • My hard drive an my i.mac recently failed.  Fortunately I had everything back up to my Time capsule.  How do I start back ups again to this same capsule using Time Machine.

My hard drive on my i.mac recently failed.  Fortunately it was backed up to Time Capsule using Time Machine.  I had a new hard drive installed. and reinstalled my data from the Time Capsule  How do I begin backups again using the same Time Capsule?  I want to back up my current hard drive with all current content.  I don't necessarily need what was on the old hard drive and pre-crash Time Capsule as everything there is currently residing on my i.mac's hard drive.  I just want to start my backups again.  Thank you.

How do I begin backups again using the same Time Capsule?
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Turn Time Machine "ON"
    Click Select Disk
    Choose your Time Capsule
    Click Use This Disk
The first backup will begin in a few minutes.
If you decide to delete your old backups, do this before you back up the "new" Mac as listed above.
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Disks tab at the top of the window
    Click Erase
    Choose the Quick Erase option
    Click Erase Disk
The operation will only take a minute or two.....then, you can set up the first backup of the Mac as listed above.

  • Shared Time Capsule - retrieving when laptop lost?

Hi. We've got one Time Capsule which holds Time Machine backups from 1 iMac and 2 MacBooks. Going back and retrieving your own files is easy, BUT if one of the MacBooks gets lost, how does one retrieve the vital document files from another computer - as each computer normally only sees its own backup files?

For individual items, you need the (badly named) +*Browse Other Time Machine Disks+* option.
Either hold down the Option key while clicking the TM icon in your Menubar, or right-click the TM icon in your Dock.
To restore from another Mac's backups, you'll have to select the item(s) you want and click the "gear" icon in TM's Finder window toolbar, and select the +*Restore <item> to . . .+* option. Then you'll get a prompt for the location.
To restore everything (except OSX) to a replacement Mac, when you first start it up you'll be asked if you already own a Mac, and have the opportunity to "transfer" your data, settings, etc., either directly from it or from it's TM backups.

  • Time Capsule setup with 2 machines: iMac and Windows XP

    Long time reader, first-time poster.
OK, so I just got my new 1TB Time Capsule, set it up and am ready to start designing my backup strategy for home. I'd like to do a few things, and looking for some advice:
    1. I am currently using Time Machine to backup my iMac to an external 250MB drive. I want to switch over my Time Machine backups to the new Time Capsule (which I think I can handle), but then I want to format my other external drive and move my video files over to it to free up disk space on my iMac. Once I do that, how do I tell Time Machine to look for that external 250MB drive as well so that it backs up my video files? I see how to exclude files from the Time Machine backup process, but I'm not sure how to explicitly tell Time Machine to back up other drives outside the main HD.
    2. I also use a Windows XP machine for work and would like to configure Time Machine to look for that machine when I'm connected at home and back up certain files on the Time Capsule. Will it do this...or do I need to login to the Time Capsule from the Windows machine and do this manually over the network share (or use SyncToy or something). If this is the case, am I better off "partitioning" the Time Capsule drive so that Time Machine can use, let's say 750MB of the space and I keep 250MB in reserve for the WIndows Machine?
I haven't seen any postings like this in this forum, my apologies if someone else has already answered this...hope it makes sense.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

  • Setting up Time Capsule as a Time Machine backup disk

I just bought a new Airport Extreme base station unit. I set it up the wireless network just fine, and am running 2 Macbook Pro's and 2 wireless printers on the network. The newer Macbook Pro is an early 2011 model running Mavericks. Airport Utility is 6.3.2. Software is all up-to-date.  When I enter Time Machine Preferences and select "choose disk", I see an external hard disk connected via USB (I had been using that as a Time Machine Backup prior to purchasing the Airport Extreme) and I also see a selection called "Other Time Capsule". When I select that option, the airport utility opens and it shows icons for "Internet" and "Airport Extreme". Both show green "lights". I cannot seem to select anything. The instruction manual says to follow the setup instructions at this point, however there are none. The Macbook Pro is connected wirelessly to the base station. (The older Macbook Pro is a 2010 model running Snow Leopard. The airport wireless network connection works fine but the OS needs to be upgraded before I could use the Time Capsule on this computer).
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

since Time Machine apparently does not work with a USB drive connected to the Airport Extreme.
    Sorry we crossed wires..
The Time Capsule has a built in hard disk. The Extreme is exactly the same but they simply do not have a hard drive.. (cannot be added later either).
In the past Apple did not support Time Machine on the Gen 1-5 Extreme.. but with Gen 6 it is indeed supported.
There is info about it here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Airport.html
You can plug a USB drive in and make it available to the network for either computer to use.
    But do note..
    1. You cannot use the existing backups.. you will need to start over. Time Machine backs up differently on network drives cf local drives.
    2. It is much slower. USB over network is half the speed of the USB drive locally and that is assuming USB2. If you have usb3 disk and computer then it is many many times slower plugged into the Extreme. It is however fast enough that if you backup over wireless it is not going to be a big hassle.
    3. It is definitely less reliable. TM backup to local USB is faster and more accurate backup. It is simply more complex and hence more issues when attached to the Extreme. Still that might work out for you.

  • Configuring Time Capsule in a new machine

    Hello,
I just bought a new macbook pro and I used the time capsule to set up the new one. Everything went fine but I found two issues:
    1) Even though I selected to copy applications, Microsoft Word and Keynote were not copy to the new computer. Does anyone know why this could happen?
    2) The other thing is that I want to use the old backup as a base to the time machine. I have backups there from more than a year now, but when I try to set up the time machine it shows the time capsule but it tries to start a new backup instead of using all the ones that are already there. Is this normal? Do I have to start all over again? how do I tell time machine that I want to use the backups that are already there?
Thanks in advanced for your help.

Did you omit anything from the migration? If so, could those apps have been somewhere besides your top-level Applications folder, perhaps in a user folder that was omitted? Do you see them on the backups?
Apple does say there are some apps that Time Machine can't back up (due to some settings by the author), but have never heard of it actually happening. If they're not on your backups, and you hadn't excluded them (via Time Machine Preferences > Options), I guess that's possible. Check with Microsoft.

    Yes, unfortunately.
Time Machine backs up each Mac (and HD) separately; a new Mac means a new, full backup. You cannot prevent it.
If you're worried about it having to delete most or all of the old Mac's backups, you can "archive" the TC's internal HD to an attached USB disk, then erase the internal HD. See #Q6 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
You can view and restore from the USB drive if necessary (better if connected directly to your Mac), via the +*Browse ...+* option, per #17 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

You have (or had) an app named IDrive, some sort of backup tool. That's what's causing most of the trouble. Apparently it was not installed completely, or not removed completely.
Contact the maker for removal instructions.
It's hard to tell whether there's also a problem with Time Machine or your Time Capsule's internal HD, but that seems doubtful. Post back if the problem continues after you solve the IDrive mess.
