Time capsule damaged data.

Trouble again
Time capsule was working fine foe about a weeks of backups.
Message -you must do a full back up.
looked at TC using finder and all files seemed to be in order and dated.
used disk utility to check TC
after running Verify disk
page after page of error's diplayed in history.
should i try and erase ond clead TC
if so how do we do this
disk utility would not allow these actions.
This Time capsule idea is becoming a real worry, what happens when you need to restore and the data is not worth anything..
after all thats the idea of the TC in the first place.
So off we go again and start a new 154gb back up.
??? could running windows 7 with Parallel be any part of my problems.

Very large backups over wireless are an issue..
should i try and erase ond clead TC
if so how do we do this
disk utility would not allow these actions.
Erase the disk via the airport utility under disk. Just do a quick erase there is no need to do a full pass as that will take hours.
So off we go again and start a new 154gb back up.

Yes, you should exclude the parallels file.. as it is very large and every time you boot into windows it will change.. TM cannot see the individual files and so backs up the entire thing.. you have to backup windows inside windows.

  • Time Machine set up on Time Capsule with data already on it

I've had a Time Capsule for a while, using it with my Powerbook G4 running OS 10.4. I put a lot of data on it including my entire iTunes library. I just got a new MacBook Pro with OS 10.5. Now I want to set up Time Machine. Can I do this on a Time Capsule with data already on it? I haven't given it a try because I don't have the data on the TC backed up (I know I need to fix that). TM won't require me to erase the volume first will it?

I discussed this issue with Apple Care at one point in the past when I was considering doing something similar to you.  They informed me that Apple does NOT recommend or support using Time Machine over a network (ethernet) connection.  They said Time Machine was not designed for it.
    Hope this helps

  • Time capsule lost data

Hi, I have just had my TC replaced it had no light on the front, it had been working fine for several months. I have been told the data is not reteivable. Can anyone tell me why this is the case? TA

Without more information about the problem, we'll have to guess a bit.
If the TC was non-operational due to an internal failure, it is probably not possible to connect to it to retrieve the data on the disk unless repairs are made first.
If the internal drive was not damaged, it might be possible to open the Time Capsule and remove the drive and transfer the data to another disk. This would normally be an operation for an experienced technician.

  • Time Capsule Died, Data Recovery Question

Hello, I have either the 1st or 2nd generation Time Capsule which just recently died.  Since this is my backup drive, I will need to get the data out of this.  The tech specs say its a serial-ATA server grade Hard Drive.   What kind of case do I need to remove the drive from the capsule and put it into a case so that I can successfully transfer data?
Would a 3.5 SATA case work?   Is it something else?   I've read about the repairs on these things, but am not interesting in soddering.
    Much help would be appreciated.

Just go into a big computer shop or order it from ebay.. you just need the usb to sata cable and a power supply.. they sell it in a box for about $10. You only need it in a case holder if you intend to keep it that way.
There are neat desk docking units you can buy where you drop the hard drive in the slot. A bit more than the bare cable.. easy peasy though.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-2-5-3-5-SATA-IDE-Dual-HDD-Hard-Disk-Drive-Dock-Do cking-Station-HUB-Reader-/170926246068?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item27cbff88b 4&_uhb=1
Just type usb sata dock or holder or cradle into ebay.. and about 20,000 options will leap up at you.
The drive in the TC is 3.5" standard sata. Don't take the server drive too seriously.. that is the one and only 500GB seagate in the original Gen1.
To fix the TC you do not need to solder in parts yourself.. there is a list of people who can help you.

    And kits available.. https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/time-capsule-power-supply-repair-kits
The units are a drop in replacement.. but change the TC from AC powered to DC powered.

  • Can't use Time Capsule as data storage beyond Time Machine?

I had thought that my 2TB Time Capsule could be used for:
    1) Wi-Fi router
    2) Time Machine backups of all my Apple computers
    3) Data storage, i.e. a shared drive among all computers in my home to store/transfer files like a network drive
But from what I've been reading, it appears that #3 is not an option. I was going to erase my TC and start all over so that I could allocate maybe 1.5TB to backups and half a TB to storage for my home machines.
Is this not possible without physically dismantling the TC as suggested elsewhere? If so, then I guess I just have a WiFi router and space for backups.

In addition to the comments from LexShellings, if you want to reserve a given amount of space on the Time Capsule disk for your shared files, you can set up a Disk Image using Disk Utility on your Mac to do so.
What you cannot do....without a lot of effort and also voiding the warranty.....is "partition" the Time Capsule drive in the traditional sense.
But, since the Disk Image will reserve the space that you want for your shared files, it acts like a partition on the Time Capsule disk.
Before you set up the Disk Image for your shared files......you might want to think about how you will back up that Disk Image to another drive....so you have a backup of the shared files.

  • How to Access time capsule backup data on Airport Extreme

    Hi All,
    Thank you in advance.
The Problem : One of our Mac Book Air was stolen and we have the MBA backed up on Airport Extreme.
Currently we don't have another MBA that can do a full restore. I just want to access the Airport Extreme Time Capsule Data and get few files that is in the backups.
I have been searching for a solution and still can't find a way to do this. It is just 1 set of files inside the backup.
Thank you again for all the help.

    Hi LaPastenague
I went over the pondini.org website, however still I can't access other users data T
I can go and review my own data.
The Data is backed up ( shared ) on Time Capsule ( which means all the users in the same house uses this one single time capsule to backup )
    http://www.apple.com/airport-time-capsule/
    ## We currently don't know what was the username or password the user was using.
I am also looking at the pondini.org and
"With Accounts:  this allows setting up separate accounts, each with its own password and folder.  You can set up accounts and passwords that correspond to the ones on your Mac (but passwords must be changed separately), and/or you can create different ones.  Each account may have permission to Read, or Read and Write, or Not allowed.  This is not recommended for use with Time Machine backups, as no single user can see everything on the disk(s).  That's especially important if there's a space problem -- you'd have to connect with each account in turn to see the whole picture.  The backups for each Mac are protected by the usual permissions anyway, so in most cases this option is overkill.  There are also a few minor differences in the content of some of the windows when selecting the backup destinations"
We are usuing this "With Accounts" settings

  • Time Capsule backup data not available

My Time Capsule had been attempting a backup for over 12 hours without any progress. I killed it, deleted the partial file, and started the backup cycle again. It has now been successful for 6 times since, but I cannot access any data prior to 3 Janurary 2009, 1:25 AM.
The 'tick' marks for each of the previous backup dates show along the right edge, but they begin to dim from the most recent to the earliest dates and then the data will not show for anything prior to yesterday.
Anybody have a clue what is going on???
I have used the Finder to view the files on the hard drive and there seems to be data in them for the various dates, but when using the Time Capsule interface, they will not show.

  • How does Time Capsule treat data other than disk images?

    Hi there
I have a 3TB TC to use primarily as a wireless backup, as intended by Apple.
However, I wish to temporarily transfer a couple of GBs of data to it for transferring across to another machine.
I seem able to do the above, but my question is: how does the TC treat the two different types of data?
    - Is it a better idea to partition the drive first?
    - Is the TC likely to automatically delete the original data, like it does with old disk images, when the disk gets full?
    - Can the TC handle the disk images and the original data side-by-side?
Just need some help understanding the 'Apple Magic' with this one!
I do realise that having the original data on the TC won't help me if it fails, but like I said, this is a temporary measure. Please don't post about this, as you won't win yourself any points - you'll just look like a smart-*** and annoy everyone.
    Thanks in advance!

    1. The Time Capsule will not automatically delete data that wasn't originally put on it as part of a Time Machine backup.
    2. It isn't possible to partition the Time Capsule. Network drives can only be partitioned by software specifically designed to work with that drive.

  • Time Capsule - retrieving data

    Hi all
harddrive failed on my mac and want to try and reclaim some previous data from the time capsule while this is being worked on
Am using a macbook in its place to continue working. when i go "into" the time capsule though i cannot see all of the mac's saved data. does it mean that it isn't there to retrieve or just that i can only access from that one computer?
    thanks

What data are you after.. you will find access to things like itunes or iphoto restricted because you need to restore the entire library before you can access content inside the library.
See instructions here for restore of specific items.
    Q15 http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I encourage people to read the whole section on restore.. Q14-17
If you need the best way IMHO is to get a suitable sized usb hard disk and do a full restore of the whole hard disk on your dead mac. Then you can find out the reality of what is there and what is perhaps missing. TM is not 100% and especially if a drive has been failing over time.. certain problems can result in stuff not being backed up at all.

  • Time Capsule writing data problem

    Hi,
I have a strange problem with my Time Capsule. I can access all the backups and the data I have stored, and I can write small files (<1MB)in it, but when I try to write a larger file (>1MB) it gives me the following error:
"The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error ocurred (error code -50)."
Any idea what is the problem and how can it be fixed?
    Thanks!
    Jordi

If you have a Gen3 TC.. A1355 (check the model on the bottom foot), they have some fairly severe hardware issues as they age.
Your testing across several computers suggests to me that the issue is the TC itself. There is no way to check the drive in the TC.. no tools can access a network drive. And Apple used only the most minimal use of the local OS in the TC.. there is a SMART check and integrity check at boot.. if either of these go off you will get a disk fault in the airport utility.. but they are not repairable.
The best check (if you can call it that) is to do a full one pass erase of the disk.. this is a low level format of the disk.. and if successful will pretty well prove the drive is intact. It will also of course wipe out all data so backup if you have stuff on it you need. The erase will take several hours.
If the TC is actually <3years.. and you have current applecare on a computer.. apple will replace it.
If the TC is >3years.. there is some stuff you can do if you are suitably mad. But IMHO.. 3years is the economic life of most consumer stuff now.. I think you should consider replacement.. unless you are mad.
I also class myself in the later category and hate throwing stuff away so I attempt repair of most things.
Gen3 TC have some tricky faults though. See
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/new-issue-with-a1355-gen-3-tc
Some faults may show in the log of the TC.. you will of course need a v5 utility to do that which will not install on Mountain Lion.. but can be tricked in.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Forgot password to access my Airport Time Capsule, can't restore Time Machine backup

It is stupid, I know, but after the first time I setup Time Machine in my Airport Time Capsule (6 months ago) i never had to use the password because it stayed stored in my Keychain.
Anyway, couple days ago I had to format the hard drive of my MacBook Pro and I did it thinking that I had a complete data backup stored in my Airport Time Capsule (encrypted data). It was late when I realized that I did not have the password written/stored anywhere. Nothing to do about it, just move on and start all over again.
I need to clean up my Airport Time Capsule and set it to factory default. I already accepted that I will lose all my data and it is okay. So far all I found was how to reset the wifi user/password but nothing about deleting stored data or reset to factory default without having the encrypted password. Can you please help me? Thanks in advance!

The encrypted data is not related to the Time Capsule.. that is purely Time Machine.
Very sorry for you.. it is one big danger when you encrypt.
    Reset to factory.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Wipe the hard disk. Open the airport utility go to the disk tab. Click on erase disk.
Select just quick erase.. it just deletes the file table and is not secure but fine for your purposes.

  • Time Capsule with Backup unable to be connected to and restored

I have recently rebuilt my iMac to 10.6.8 - I was previously on the same OS but wanted a clean install.
My entire mac was backed up to a 3tb Time Capsule
Having rebuilt I would like to restore some data from the Time Capsule but the iMac is now refusing to see any data on the time capsule.  When I manage the Time Capsule from Airport Utility I can see that there is about 1gb used.  If I share the disc and allow connectivity I can even see the sparsebundle, but Time Machine and Migration Assistant do not see a valid Time Capsule with data that can be restored from.
I am not 100% that I have anything stored here that I can recover elsewhere.  The key data was stored in multiple places as I never like to rely on 1 - however I would like to get to the bottom of this as I want some confidence in this for the future.
    Any advice welcome.
    Paul

The problem is that Migration Assistant doesn't recognise ANY backup partitions on the Time Capsule.  I can see the Time Capsule drive and when I select them I have to provide a password but it fails to connect or fails to find a usable backup.  But as I mentioned if I manually connect I can see the sparsebundle.
I'm quite happy to start again, but really want to recover some of the data on the drive.  If I can't recover now under these circumstance (ie voluntary rebuild) I will have no confidence that the TC will be there when needed under an involuntary rebuild.
The machine has been rebuilt under exactly the same machine name and administrator names, although I guess these could both have unique identifiers.

  • Do you have to use Time Machine with Time Capsule? Time Capsule &Fire Wire?

Does Time Capsule have to be used with Time Machine, or can a user use Time Capsule as a straight foward external hard drive for which to copy files?
Can Time Capsule be linked via USB or Firewire for important data transfers to, and from, a MAC computer?
Thank you in advance for any input.

    1. your first question is answered by this paragraph Apple has posted at http://www.apple.com/timecapsule/wireless.html which says:
"Time Capsule with Time Machine in Leopard is the ideal backup solution. But that doesn’t mean Tiger, Windows XP, and Windows Vista users can’t enjoy the benefits of Time Capsule, too. Because it mounts as a wireless hard drive, Tiger and Windows users simply access Time Capsule directly from the wireless network for exchanging and storing files quickly and easily."
    2. Time Capsule can not be connected directly to a Mac via USB to transfer files. Time Capsule does not have a Firewire port. All file transfer occurs over a network connection between the Mac and this device. If you have a Mac with a gigabit ethernet port, and you cable it directly to one of the ethernet ports on the Time Capsule, the data transfer will be "pretty fast".
Keep in mind that Time Capsule is a network device designed to share an internet connection, create a wireless network, and provide shared file storage and printing on the network. It is not at all similar to a basic external hard drive.
