Time Capsule Data not visible

Hi there,
got a little problem with my TC 500gb. The network i set up with my TC is working without problems, and the internet also works. The only problem I've got is, that when I'm trying to access my data stored on the TC i can't see it (The Data). In my finder the TC is visible, however as soon as I doube klick on it, nothing happens. The spinning ball light grey sspinning circle in the bottom right corner signalises it's looking/working but nothing happens. The finder window stays blank. The same thing happens with my usb storage connected to the TC. However, the free space and used space are assessed correctly, so my data must still be there. Also the Time Machine works just fine. It connects to the image of my TimeMachine which is based on the Time Capsule. Also my Itunes plays my music which is on my usb storage connected to the TC. The only is problem is, I can't see my data, and change it in the finder. Also copying new stuff on my TC isn't working, as I can't see anything in the finder.
Hope you can help me. I already tried numerous different adjustements of the draft standard (changing g/b to n draft) and tried to change the channels. but it didn't help. Also turing off my TC and restarting it didn't help.
Micha

Thanks guys. Problem was solved. As a matter of fact I had my MacBook Air in repair. The Keyboard and Trackpad werde exchanged. After getting it back it worked again. I really don't know what it was, but I'm glad it works again. nevertheless thanks for your help!

  • Time Capsule disk not visible in Back to My Mac

    Hi,
I've seen this problem couple of times already in questions of other people, but there might be sort of a difference in my situation, and therefore I'm starting this new thread. My situation is following:
    - I set up a new Time Capsule at my home, both as a shared disk and as an WiFi access point for my home network
    - I can see the shared disk from all my computers at my home (in the sidebar of Finder, i.e. using Bonjour)
    - I want to see the shared disk also from my work (using Back to My Mac), and therefore I set my MobileMe login in the Time Capsule (using AirPort Utility -> Advanced -> MobileMe)
    - ... but I don't see the Time Capsule shared disk from my home :-( (i.e. it doesn't appear in the Finder sidebar of my work computer)
    - now I guess I could get plenty of hints about bad NAT, firewalls, etc., but this is an important think:
    - I don't see the Time Capsule from my work computer, but at the same time I DO see my home computer which is connected by this Time Capsule
    - ... so I'd say all the NAT stuff is OK, is it not?
    - so to summarise it: I've got Back to My Mac turned on on both my computers - at home and at work; I've got MobileMe login filled in in the Time Capsule at home (plus disk sharing is enabled, protected by a password); the home computer is connected to the Internet through that home Time Capsule; and from my work I CAN see the shared disk of my home computer, but I CANNOT se the shared disk of the home Time Capsule (which is in the very same network as the home computer)
    - the technicalities are: TC firmware 7.5.2, AirPort Utility 5.5.2, Mac OS 10.6.7 on both computers; TC Airport is in the Bridge mode, it has got a fixed IP 10.x.x.x (at home I'm connected using a metropolitan network with this internat IP range; there are no private NATs allowed, all connected devices must have a unique IP inside the whole network), and its default router is manually set to 10.y.y.y
Please can anyone tell me what can be wrong? Do I do something wrong? Is there a setting I missed? Because this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3486 doesn't mention anything special, it's just a very intuitive setup. And if I've set everything properly, why is there the difference between the home computer and the Time Capsule?
Thanks a lot for any advice
    JR

    rompi,
So get this, out of the blue, I started seeing the unseen TC without doing a thing.  I went through the settings after I posted on the 1st.  I "cycled" the TC disc file sharing off and on and re did the back to my mac function, i.e., I deleted and added my mobile-me user names and passwords.  Nothing happened at first, I could still see the TC in network, but not from the web.  Two weeks past and poof, there it was and it's been there ever since.  Screen sharing always worked and I could always see the mac associated with that TC, that never changed.
    Go figure.

I just upgraded from my 2008 MacBook to a new Macbook Pro. How do I get my time capsule to work on my new MacBook? I did data migration, but the time capsule did not pick it up. Any ideas?

If you migrated all the info from time machine to your new MBP. The TM will usually ask to connect to the old backups.. sorry I am not sure is this what you want to do.. Personally I think you start a fresh backup.
BTW Time Capsule does not do anything.. it is a dumb hard disk in a box.. it is TM that does everything.
Look at B5 and B6 here about connecting to your backup.

I'm receiving this error message about my Time Capsule:
"The backup disk image '/Volumes/Data/my name's iMAC.sparesebundle" is already in use.  The time capsule is not backing up any files.

    1. Open the Sharing preference pane and check that the computer name hasn't changed without your knowledge. For example, if the name was "X's iMac," it might now be "X's iMac (2)". In that case, restore the original name. You may have to click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane to unlock the settings. Test. If there's no improvement, or if the name had not been changed, continue.
    2. If you're backing up to a Time Capsule, or an AirDisk attached to a 2013 or later model AirPort Extreme base station, restart it in either of the following ways:
☞ Disconnect and reconnect the power adapter.
☞ Select the device in the AirPort Utility application and then select
              Base Station ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
If AirPort Utility notifies you of a firmware update, install it.

  • My Time Capsule does not work with existing WiFi

Following a question solved on March 24 by LaPastenague, but gone bad again.
    Apple AirPort Time Capsule
I felt the need for a physical backup of my data, as I would not completely trust the different clouds. I use, and have used Dropbox for 4-5 years and are very satisfied with that, but I am still not sure if or when a political lunatic will shut off the internet.
I purchased the Apple AP Time Capsule 2T, because all my other stuff are Apple, and that it's wireless. My old backup is Maxtor 300 GB.
Since we stay 2-3 weeks on two locations, one in Norway and one in Sweden (two different countries) we must use Mobile Broadband 4G, cables or fibre connections are useless for us, and we don't have it up to the houses. I have one mini router for each country, we bring with us iPhones, iPads, iMac, Apple TV, APExpress. When we pass the boarder I change the mini router, and the system continues working perfect on the WiFi, except the APExpress that needs to be reconfigured,  but then it works.
The APTC was difficult to make working as it would not accept to be in an existing network, but with good help from the Apple Community, LaPastenague, with forcing the TC connect to the APE with Ethernet cable in bridge mode, ref "My Time Capsule does not work with existing WiFi" from March 24, the problem was solved and all gadgets worked together in a perfect harmony, until we changed location.
Now, as I have my second WiFi network, and the APExspress is reconfigured, it's like the TC thinks, I am the base boss here, I am not taking orders from APE one more time, and it simply does not work, not only that, it fluctuates all the time.
I have a slight feeling that the two WiFi bands are making the trouble as during the configuration of the TC sometime the last figure 6 and 7 pops up, and that has something two do with the two different 2,4 and 5 GHZ bands
So, I am curious if you have any idea ?
I am thinking of returning the TC if I don't make it work now, but how do I delete all the data that's on it?

I can deal with the last question first and easily.
I am thinking of returning the TC if I don't make it work now, but how do I delete all the data that's on it?
Open the airport utility .. go to the disk tab and select erase.
When you select erase you will get mulitiple options.
Quick removes the file table but does not delete the files,, it takes 2min or less.
A Zero out data is the secure way,, by writing 0 ie low level drive format.
    It can take several hours..
7 pass will take a week.. not recommended..
35 pass erase is ridiculous.. it would take a month.. put an ax through the TC. It is quick and better.
Now, as I have my second WiFi network, and the APExspress is reconfigured, it's like the TC thinks, I am the base boss here, I am not taking orders from APE one more time, and it simply does not work, not only that, it fluctuates all the time.
The fact that it did work and has now failed might point to faulty unit.
The only way to tell is reset it properly to factory and start over.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Generally having multiple wireless AP should not cause problems.. but it is better to set channels manually.. so it doesn't go beserk rotating channels.
Remember to keep all names short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Sadly though the Apple routers have no logging now and no SNMP and almost nothing to help diagnose a problem, so if it continues .. take it back to apple.. they have given you no other method of fixing it.

  • Is it possible to sync time capsule data to a external hard drive

Is it possible to sync time capsule data to a external hard drive connected to time capsule via usb. (as an precaution just incase time capsule fails)
    Thanks

Yes, if the USB drive has been previously formatted correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
    Click the Disks icon
Click the Disks tab below the icon
    Click Archive
Allow plenty of time for the copy process to occur. You will not be able to make Time Machine backups from your Mac until the Archive process has completed.

  • Time capsule does not appear in shared devices

All of the sudden my Time Capsule does not show up in the shared devices. It's all up to date, it is working fine as a router and internet connection works fine. It also show up in the airpot utility and the light is green however it does not show up on the shared devices so I cannot access the data folider anymore.
Furthermore Airport utility indicates that the disk is damaged but I cannot repair it because I cannot access it.
Any ideas? (beside doing a reset which I have already done)

That is bad.. the light should not be green unless you told the TC to ignore the problem.
A damaged disk has to be replaced.. if the SMART has gone off or is showing as bad or no capacity then you need to replace the disk (or if under warranty.. the whole TC).
    How old is the TC?
Model number from the base A1xxx helps.
You can try doing an erase from the airport utility if the disk shows up at all. But if SMART has gone off the disk will need replacement anyway.
If less than 1year return to apple for warranty replacement.. and if you have applecare on a computer it will cover the TC for up to 3years although the rules are strict.. so check.
See instructions for removal of the hard disk.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule_Model_A1302
Certainly if the TC is older than 3years.. it might be better to consider replacement. Certainly replacing a hard disk could be just short fix until the power supply also goes.

  • Time capsule does not appear in the finder.

My time capsule appears in airport utility. It is ready to go. I have it on ethernet because airport isn't a very powerful wireless router. The time capsule does not appear in the finder. It does not appear in the disc utility. It does not appear in time machine. The airport utility will do factory resets, get it ready for internet, whatever. The rest of my net work can not see it.
I have done the finder preferences. I have restarted the computer, jiggered the sharing preferences, done factory resets, tried to find sparce bundles and sparse bundles, reset the finder, force quit finder, tried to find finder plsts, trawled the discussion pages, tried to find server addresses and apple ids. Nothing seems to work.
Time capsule never seems to work as smoothly as it supposed to. I shudder to present my problems to apple support because I know that its a long road and will probably end in tears. But here I am, naked before this disappointing edifice.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

What is the make and model number of your modem?
I have a microwave modem on my roof. I don't think that has anything to do with this. I am not using my airport for a wireless router, only as a time capsule connected by ethernet. The Airport Utility calls my airport : Airport Extreme 802.11 ( 1st Generation )
Is the Time Capsule acting as your main router or is another device handling those services?
No, I have a lyncsis router. The wireless router function on airports doesn't seem to work very well. I don't think thats a problem with mine. My brothers have gone with lyncsis as well.
Was the Time Capsule visible in the Finder before, and is now "lost", or has it never appeared in the Finder?
It appeared on my previous laptop. That died. Now I have an imac. The airport has never appeared on the imac.
Thanks for trying to help so quickly

  • Time Capsule crashing; not appearing in AirPort Utility

    Hi all
My Time Capsule keeps on crashing, and is currently not appearing in the AirPort Utility window. I restarting it by unplugging it and plugging it back in again, but it will randomly crash again, or the sessions will be interrupted on the TC drive and the additional HDD that's plugged into it. I'm not really sure what's going on here. It's not like I'm sitting too far away from the Time Capsule (less than 3m, in fact).
The only thing that's going on that could be causing this, as far as I can see, is my attempting to migrate my files and folders from my old PowerBook to my new MacBook Pro (a procedure that is not, in all honestly, going all that well).
    Thanks in advance

    Rob,
If you don't mind a few more suggestions...
*_Time Capsule Weak Signal Strength / Dropped Connections_*
Forgive the size of the post, but the suggestions below have helped others with similar issues. Try each topic individually and see if things improve, If not move on to the next one.
    *Keep the Time Capsule Cool*
Some posters have observed that when they positioned the Time Capsule for better ventilation and cooling, their network connectivity issues resolved themselves. Also avoid locating the devise within poorly ventilated cabinets or piling items around or on top of it.
    *Time Capsule Orientation*
While the location you chose to setup your Time Capsule may be acceptable, but the direction it is oriented can have an effect on signal strength. It appears that the signal of the Time Capsule does not radiate equally from all sides of the devise.
The antennas within the devise are positioned along the 3 smooth sides. That is, there is no antenna on the side bearing the ports and cables. As a result, position the devise with the ports and cables AWAY from the direction of most of the clients that will be connecting to it.
    *Cordless Phones*
Some users have discovered that the cordless phones they have in the home occupy or are near the same bandwidth as their wireless network (2.4Ghz or 5Ghz). Try temporarily disabling the handsets and their bases and see if network connectivity improves. If so you may need to change the channel that the phone uses or purchase phones that occupy a different bandwidth.
    *Proximity To Other Devices*
One poster observed: “Finally have full access, full speed, and full functionality. Initially I installed the Time Capsule at the location of my cable, cable modem... which of course was next to my HDTV, DVD, Apple TV, Amplifier, etc. Get the picture? After about 4 weeks of starts and stops, resets and repeated initial backups, I moved the unit to another location, closer to my Mac, and in an area where there are no other electronics. Now, it runs perfect.” [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1734818&tstart=0]
    *Change Firewall Settings* #
Go to System Preferences --> Security.
    Click the Firewall tab.
Change setting to “Set access for specific services and applications”.
The System will now ask you when each process wants to penetrate the firewall. Once you click “Allow” each time you are asked, it will be saved in the pane at the bottom of this window and it should never ask you again.
One poster observed, “Since I made this change, my wireless has been strong and Time Machine works like a champ and the impact on my network performance is minimal. I speculate that the change in performance is due to security protocols or services that run in the 'allow all incoming connections' and 'allow only essential services' modes. Whatever the reason this fix has worked for me for over 2 months without resetting my airport connection or time capsule.” [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8348496#8348496]
    *Change Time Capsules’ Channel*
    Launch Airport Utility.
Select the device on the left.
    Click "Manual Setup."
    Select “Airport” in the toolbar.
    Click the "Wireless" tab.
If “Channel” is set to “Automatic” try changing to a different one. Holding the Option key down and clicking the drop-down menu should provide more channels to choose from. If you have another wireless router operating, ensure that each devices’ channels are as far apart as possible.
    Click “Update”.
    Close Airport Utility.
    *Preferred Networks & Airport Services*
You may be experiencing interference from other networks in your neighborhood. When you click the Airport menu are there other networks listed other than your own?
If so, is your network at the top of the list? It should be.
Go to System Preferences --> Network --> Select Airport on the left.
Click "Advanced". In the “Airport” tab note the various local wireless networks that Airport detects. Is the network you prefer to connect to at the top of the list? If not drag it to the top. Are there other networks you never intend to connect to (an old work network, or a neighbors network)? Then highlight them and click the "-" button.
Make sure “Remember any network this computer has joined” is checked.
    Click "OK".
For "Network Name" be sure your network is selected and then click "Apply".
Is Airport (wireless) your primary means of connecting to your network? If so, is Airport at the top of the list of services on the left? It should be.
Click the small “Gear” button at the bottom of the window and select “Set Service Order”.
Now drag Airport to the top of the list.
    Click “OK”. Click “Apply”.
Now see if network connectivity has improved.
    *Transmit Power & Wide Channels*
If you are using the 802.11n only (5GHz) radio mode, you can also select to use wide channels, which provide higher data throughput in your network.
    Launch Airport Utility
Select your Time Capsule on the left.
    Click “Manual Setup”.
    Select “Airport” in the toolbar.
    Click the “Wireless” tab.
Click “Wireless Options...” at the bottom of the window.
Adjust the “Transmit Power” to 100%.
Put a check mark in the box labeled “Use Wide Channels”. (If you are using a 802.11a/b/g (2.4GHz) radio mode then select “Interference Robustness”)
    Click “Done”.
Click “Update” in the lower right hand corner.
Wait for the Time Capsule to restart and then see if your network speeds improve.
    *Faulty Airport Card*
One poster reported: “I reckoned the fault must be with the Macbook’s hardware so took the plunge and got a new airport card fitted to my Macbook and now everything is working fine. At last I have a working Macbook!” [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1719326&tstart=0]
If you think this might be the case, follow the steps outlined in this KB article to determine if your Airport card is still being detected by your system:
Let us know if any of the above helped improve your situation.
    Cheers!

  • Time capsule will not turn on

my time capsule will not turn on

Is it Gen 1 or Gen 2?
It is utterly standard dead power supply. Just google tme capsule power supply.. you would be highly fortunate it lasted this long.
Gen 3. It has a shorted board. They used a batch of poor ceramic caps that short out.
Gen 4. Don't know.. they will suffer the same issue as Gen 3 if that batch of caps was still being used. They are still too young to have an easy to see pattern.
Most will be under warranty or applecare still in which case it is apple's problem not yours. Plus they are not landing in my hands yet.. so I cannot give you info.. Apple will never tell you anything.
Tell us how old? What model A1xxx from the base?
    What size hard disk?
Do you have just backups or do you have data that needs recovery?
For just TM backups it is better to let them go now, unless it is gen3.
Economic life 3years and 3days. The 3/3 principle.. make sure they last the full apple extended warranty.. plus some margin..

  • Time Capsule will not mount

To begin, my finder stopped working and I was advised to re-install Snow Leopard. I did so confident that I could backup from my Time Capsule. However my Time Capsule will not mount and at times cannot be found. I am reluctant to change settings which may result in me not being able to ultimately restore my files.
Where do I go from here? Any help much appreciated.

I had the exact same issue. What actually got my attention was the loss of the internet first. That took pulling the power on Time Capsule and plugging back in to the net back. Then I notice time capsule wouldn't update -- my Time Capsule disk wasn't visible. I tried everything I could think of, resets, hard resets and new passwords all the way around. There was no issue with the network access it was great -- good on wireless, good on ethernet. Just no time capsule disk visible anywhere -- not in Finder and not in AirPort Utility Disks.
I finally downgraded my firmware to 7.3.1 (Airport Utility -- Base Station > Upload Firmware) --- and that still didn't work. Had to go pull the plug again just to get out of the yellow light.
With nothing to loose I upgraded the firmware back to 7.3.2 and voila --- an error message!! "Internal Disk Error" --- at least I was getting something.
A quick search turns up the solution to this issue...just erase the dis in the AirPort Utility. Open the Time Capsule in AirPort Utility, go to the Disks tab, select the disk and click Erase.
PIA - but it is all good again. I thought I had a HDD failure.

  • How do I transfer time capsul data to external hard drive to free up space?

How do I transfer time capsule data to external hard drive to free up space?

The fastest method is straight copy and paste..
Plug a suitable hard disk into your computer.. format it Mac OS extended journaled (if not already).
Select the folders/files you want to move.. copy and paste them to the external drive..
Double check that the files are copied because the next step will delete the files forever.. there is no trash on the TC.
Delete the files on the TC.
You can also do a full archive of the TC disk to a USB plugged into it by USB.. it must be formatted Mac OS Extended Journaled. It must be big enough to hold all data on the TC disk.. best idea is to buy the same size or bigger.. so if you use 2TB TC buy a 2TB or bigger external drive.
    In airport utility select archive.
That will copy everything on the TC disk to the USB drive.. you could then Erase the disk of the TC.. this is super fast if you choose quick erase.. just a few minutes. But the archive will take many hours.. say for 2TB about 12-24hours.. and you cannot use the disk in the TC during that time.

  • My airport time capsule did not set up successfully, and then status light flash amber

    Hi, Guys
I am the first time user of the time capsule, please help how to proceed?
I have set up the first time and my airport time capsule does not set successfully, then I try to reset to factory setting. After this, although I use the ethenet cable to connect the router to the airport, the status light flash amber, always, even after the reset.
Also, I can see that airport time capsule base station from the wireless network when airport is plugged in. However, when I want to access to it.

Thanks for your guidance, but the product is really anoying. First, I am sure that the airpor utilities is 6.3.
and I also follow your instruction that to set the IPv6 as local link mode. But still get the same error as mentioned in my first post.
Therefore, I have tried to use the bridge mode but could not find it, and therefore still can not set it up successfully, even though I reset the factory again(press the reset button 5 secconds at least).

  • HT1178 air time capsule is not accepting external hard drive content in back up

Own a mac air and have an external seagate hard drive. Bought airport time capsule and want to include or transfer the seagate content to the airport time capsule. I used the seagate drive as external hard drive but want the content to be available in the airtime capsule. When trying to generate back up (while seagate is connected) it only inclydes the content on the mac air flash memory. In the air capsule menu I do see the seagate but I don't believe it is excluded from the backup? Again I want it included in the back up.
    Thanks!

The list is backwards.. anything on the list is excluded.. it has to be off the list to be included.. by default external drives are excluded.. you must remove it from the excluded list to include it.
Please note.. sharing content of an external drive via a Time Machine backup is not going to work.
Time Machine is designed to create an exclusive virtual disk on the TC for that particular computer.. although other computers can access it .. it is specifically designed to be difficult.. nor are files in formats that can be used directly.. the file has to be restored to the computer.
Time Capsule is not designed as a NAS and usage of it that way is often going to lead to problems.
Read the info in Pondini how best to avoid the worst aspects of that.
    Q3 here http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Remember if you share files from the TC they have no backups and Time Machine cannot backup network drives.
