Time Capsule Data Transfer

I have been transferring data from one Time Capsule to another by dragging and dropping over my wireless network. However, it is taking an inordinate amount of time, especially for movies and tv shows. Is there a quicker way to do this. Can I attach one to the other - ethernet (internet only?) or firewire?

three choices
wireless N speed will be about 6.5 m/sec
ethernet cate 5e + will be 11.3 M/sec
or pull the hard drive out(warranty becomes NG) and copy your data to it. You'll need to reformat it first.

  • Time Capsule data transfer speeds

    Hi,
I just bought the 1TB Time Capsule. I'm copying 117GB from MacPro to TC which after an extremely slow start 12Mbps is now bouncing around between 80 and 120Mbps. For Gigabit Ethernet (CAT6) these speeds are not impressive. Out of curiosity, what does everyone else see? I've had 2 Macs connected together at 450Mbps so was expecting similar from TC with its "server-grade" hard disk.

You don't need a modem with FIOS, you can just get rid of the VZ router and replace it with your own (you call Verizon to get them to change your connection from COAX, the same thing that goes to your tv, to ethernet from your ONT) but will lose video on demand on your tv  and caller id on tv. If you  want those to stay you can keep the VZ box and play with configurations listed here.
Think you should actually say that without the router you'd lose fios tv completely (it has to be in the network somewhere to provide coax signals), though possibly you could connect a coax cable from the ont directly to 1 tv.

  • Time Machine Data Transfer - From FireWire Drive to Time Capsule - HELP!

Time Machine Data Transfer - From FireWire Drive to Time Capsule - HELP!
I've been searching for weeks for a solution to my problem. Here's the story I've come across since I installed Leopard on Oct. 26, 2007.
I first installed Leopard on my Early 2006 MacBook and set up Time Machine with a 200GB external FireWire drive. Since then, things have been fine, until Time Machine started deleting the oldest backups. I'm a pack-rat and hated this feeling of losing data. So, I now have a few months worth of backups on my 200GB FireWire drive.
The Time Capsule is released, I finally talk myself into getting one and transferring my old data from the 200GB drive to my 1TB TC.
I did some researching through forums about how to move data from one Time Machine drive to another, so I took the concept and wanted to apply it to my Time Capsule. I made a DMG image of my 200GB drive, in order to move the data. I figured if I can make an image, copy it, and open it on the Time Capsule - all will go smoothly - just as some had mentioned they've done with external drives.
Now, I have a 164GB DMG image of my Time Machine, with no hope in sight of gaining it back. I've tried taking the image, using Disk Utility, and restoring my original 200GB external with the imaged Time Machine data, but whenever I do, I come across error messages.
In Disk Utility, I've done the following steps:
    * Disk Image is found on Time Capsule
    * I select the 200GB drive and select 'Restore'
    * I drag and drop the Disk Image to the 'Image' field
    * I drag and drop the 200GB drive into the the 'Restore' field
    * Select 'Erase Destination'
    * Select 'Restore'
    * I get the warning message that I'll erase the drive - I proceed
    * I enter my password
    Error message pops up:
"Restore Failure: Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned/scanned for restore."
I select the image in Disk Utility, then proceed with the following steps:
    * Click on "Image" then down to "Scan Image for Restore"
    * I enter my password
After hours of waiting, I get another error message:
    "Unable to scan. (Broken pipe)."
I'm going to see, after transferring the DMG to the Time Capsule, if I can drag-and-drop the files from the Time Capsule drive onto the 200GB hard drive.
IF anyone has any more suggestions, please let me know!

32 updates on this Mac since December 2007 - Hardware, software, OS...
They keep coming at about 6 or 7 a month. Some of them I don't care about, but several are essential. 10.5.3 has been seeded to the testers a couple of times and will probably show up in the next few weeks. Jaguar wasn't worth a d*mn until 10.2.6, Panther about 10.3.4, Tiger about 10.4.4 - I'd say we are ahead or on schedule Too bad I can't get Apple to fix Spaces. I wish they'd focus on what I want but I guess some take more time than others.

  • How do I transfer time capsul data to external hard drive to free up space?

How do I transfer time capsule data to external hard drive to free up space?

The fastest method is straight copy and paste..
Plug a suitable hard disk into your computer.. format it Mac OS extended journaled (if not already).
Select the folders/files you want to move.. copy and paste them to the external drive..
Double check that the files are copied because the next step will delete the files forever.. there is no trash on the TC.
Delete the files on the TC.
You can also do a full archive of the TC disk to a USB plugged into it by USB.. it must be formatted Mac OS Extended Journaled. It must be big enough to hold all data on the TC disk.. best idea is to buy the same size or bigger.. so if you use 2TB TC buy a 2TB or bigger external drive.
    In airport utility select archive.
That will copy everything on the TC disk to the USB drive.. you could then Erase the disk of the TC.. this is super fast if you choose quick erase.. just a few minutes. But the archive will take many hours.. say for 2TB about 12-24hours.. and you cannot use the disk in the TC during that time.

  • Is it possible to sync time capsule data to a external hard drive

Is it possible to sync time capsule data to a external hard drive connected to time capsule via usb. (as an precaution just incase time capsule fails)
    Thanks

Yes, if the USB drive has been previously formatted correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
    Click the Disks icon
Click the Disks tab below the icon
    Click Archive
Allow plenty of time for the copy process to occur. You will not be able to make Time Machine backups from your Mac until the Archive process has completed.

Just use the archive utility on the disk page of the airport utility manual setup..
If you have lion and v6 airport utility.. it missed out. On lots of things.

  • Using Time Capsule to transfer data to a new machine

I have just taken possession of a new iMac. I need to transfer the data from my old one and wondered if Time Capsule was the most efficient way of doing this.
I understand that there is a transfer utility built into the Mac OS which allows you to transfer data from one machine to another via Firewire, but it occurred to me that my Time Machine might provide a quicker and easier way of doing it.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.

I would go with FireWire. Boot the old Mac into "target disk mode" by holding down the "T" key while it is booting. Then connect the two Macs with a FireWire cable and launch the Migration Assistant utility.
If your Time Machine backup is on your network (rather than being directly connected), transferring the data from the other computer over FireWire is probably going to be a lot faster.

  • HT5097 connect a macbook to a time capsule to transfer data?

I don't have a Mac, just a macbook.  It doesn't have an ethernet port.  So, how do I connect it to my time capsule so that I can transfer the data from my old time capsule to the newer one?

Are you accessing the old Time Capsule by Wi-FI? Try hooking the new Time Capsule to the old Time capsule to see if they will both show up in Finder. If so, copy your files across.

  • Transfer time capsule data to macbook

Yesterday my hard drive on my macbook crashed and I lost everything. Thankfully I have full backups on a time capsule.
I am able to open time machine and see the backups but I am having trouble transferring the data on to the computer.
When I open Migration Assistant, it shows the time capsule but when I click on it as the system to transfer it says "0 time machine backups found".
I know the data is on the time capsule (I can see it when through time machine, but I can't transfer my files back from the time capsule onto the new hard drive.
    Suggestions??
Sorry if this has been posted before, I looked but didn't see it.
    Cheers.

Had you excluded anything important, such as system files, from your backups?
If not, try repairing the backups, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
If that finds and fixes things, you should be able to access the backups.
But don't use +Migration Assistant.+ Instead, do a full system restore, per #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

  • Do i need a time capsule to transfer data

ok so this might have already been asked if it has i am sorry and please direct me to the thread where i can get the answer, thanks
so my problem is i am getting a new mac upgrading my macbook to a macbook pro and i was wondering if i need to purchase a time capsule/ wireless internet combo thing in order to get all of my info from my macbook itunes library to the new mac? meaning everything music, videos, etc. even if its not the only way, would it be one of the easiest, because i was really considering getting a time capsule anyway thanks and if i made anything unclear please let me know and ill try to clairify

No. If you have a simple FireWire cable, you will be able to connect one Mac to the other via FireWire Disk Mode. Then use Migration Assistant (During your initial launch of the new Mac) to transfer all of your files over. It should result in a virtually identical setup as your previous Mac.
Here is a KB article on how to set that up.

  • Transferring Time Capsule Data from an old Time Capsule to a new one?

How do I transfer the data from my old 500GB time capsule to my new 2TB time capsule.  I just installed Lion as well.  I have the time capsules connected with the Ethernet cable.  I can see both of them in the finder.  When I open the Disk Utility I can only see the old time capsule so it is not possible to drag the new time capsule to the destination field in the restore tab.  Please help.  I would like to have my existing time machine backup on my new Time Capsule.
    Thank you in advance.
FYI Time Machine 101 is not any help.

  • Time capsule ethernet transfer slow

I have a new 3 tb time capsule.  I have used it to back up my mac before doing a fresh install.  I also transfered my large 250gb iphoto library via ethernet cable to the time capsule in a seperate folder.  When I completed the new install of mountain lion I used migration assistant to transfer the base data and then individually transfered documents and sub folders with minial fuss. 50 gb taking 1hr.  I am now trying to transfer the iphoto library and it is giving me a 7-22 days transfer time.  This makes no sense, please advise.

Time estimates are displayed using the current connection rate.
It is normal for the backup to start quite slowly as it tries to analyze all of the data to be backed up or transferred,  and then speed up significantly for the bulk of the transfer and then slow down a bit toward the end of the backup.

  • VERY Complicated iTunes/Time Capsule/Library Transfer Question

Hi all-- looking for some help before I move my beloved iTunes library (over 500GB) from an old PC to a brand spanking new MacBook Pro and a 1TB Time Capsule.
I want to store the music files on the Time Capsule and access everything wirelessly. When I am away from the apartment/TC, I'll usually have my iPod on me-- which I would just plug in and access it through iTunes.
MOST important would be to have everything transfer over and run clean and fast, without weird errors etc. If I can keep my old playlists/play counts/date added etc, great but not necessary.
Any thoughts on the best solution? Do I transfer/copy over using the new sharing function in iTunes? Or is it safer to just connect the hard drive to the computer/time capsule-- and from there, do I make a folder on the TC my default iTunes folder?
Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated-- I went Apple (I also just bought an iPhone) for seamless and fast solutions, so I am hoping all this works!
    Thanks,

My computer hard drive crashed and was recently replaced and a fresh new install of Windows 7 was done.  Also my service provider has change and I no longer use the airport as my wireless router.  I have all my data on the time capsule however I am unable to access it.  I tried downloading airport utility for windows but its not detecting my time capsule.  I am connecting the time capsule to my computer using the usb cable.  Any suggestions?

I am connecting the time capsule to my computer using the usb cable.  Any suggestions?
That is not a valid method of connecting.. the TC is a network device.. you cannot use USB to it.
Plug it in by ethernet or use wireless.. either way it should be accessible by the airport utility.
