Time Capsule: dead or coughing-up blood?

I had (until last night) a home network using Time Capsule with Air Port Express.  Today network has disappeared  (not recognised by Airport Utility).  After unplugging and restarting both devices, TC now has orange light always on and not blinking, and Express has orange light blinking.  Hub is fine BTW.  I have read in other threads that TC hard-drive may have failed.  Is there another explanation, solution or fix?  Thanks for your help.

Dead hard disk most likely although the A1409 are known to have a number of strange issues.
If it is in warranty or you have apple care get apple to replace it. It must be less than or just on 3years old.
Sometimes the WD green drive just up and loses format.. no logical reason but I have seen a few with the problem.
If you have no warranty open it up .. pull out the hard disk and see if the TC will boot without.. they are supposed to work as airport extreme without a hard disk. If it works ok just replace the disk.

  • Time Capsule Dead.... :(

My Time Capsule stopped working... No Lights, No sound, nothing. Unplugged and plugged in multiple times, different outlets. It's just dead. What should I do? It's not very old. Maybe 1 or 2 years old. What about all the files on the HD?
    Help

    Contact Apple.
    This information should help.

  • My time capsule wouldnt let me back up my computer, and when I rebooted it, the light won't turn on at all, is my time capsule dead?

My time capsule said that it couldn't back up my Mac because the backup was already in use, I went to the apple communities, and it said to reboot the time capsule, after I rebooted, the light didn't come on at all and my Mac can't find the network at all. Is my time capsule done? Or will apple fix this?

No light.. no body is at home.. the TC is dead.
    What model is it??
A1xxx (x are numbers) on the base..
eg A1254 Gen 1 A1302 Gen 2 A1355 Gen 3 are moulded into the rubber first line. Gen4 is A1409 and written on the paper label where it always should have been. Gen 5 is the new tall AC model.
If the TC is in warranty ie a Gen4 or Gen5 purchased in the last year Apple will replace it.
If it is more than 1 year Apple might replace it if it is covered by applecare you have on a computer.. this is complex.. ring apple and ask.
Any TC older than 3years is not covered.
Gen1 and Gen2 are prone to dead power supplies. Gen3 and Gen4 prone to board failure. All have the effect you mention.. no lights on.
Let it cool right down.. off for several hours.. then power up again and tell us what the front LED and ethernet LED do during the boot cycle.. if anything.

  • Time capsule dead paperweight

Had my Time Capsule for about 2yrs.  Time Cap died yesterday.  Is there any way to retrieve the data on its storage?  Do I have to take it into Apple to retrieve data?
Hardly check it, since it's mostly automatic.  But yesterday, green light was off.  Unplugged it & replugged it in- no green or yellow light.  Replugged it into a different outlet- still dead paperweight.  Could it be just a the power plug, or power jack, or something with the power regulation?

it doesn't really mention or explain details for repairing / replacing the power supply.  they just give out phone numbers for repair shops in the states, or numbers for repairs in other countries.  do you have any other options for shops in California, which can do repairs on T Cap, for fairly inexpensive price?
    i appreciate the help,
    thanks,
There are specific instructions for repairing the power supply..
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/apple-time-capsule-repair-type2
And there are many suggestions of other methods. Which are better as the internal power supply will fail again.
There are no phone numbers given out on the site.. none whatsoever.
I have listed all the people who have offered to do repairs. There are no parts made available so most repair centres cannot repair them.. apple do not provide parts as they consider it a sealed unit.
There are two people in the list from CA.. did you ask them??

  • Time capsule dead on arrival

Got a new TC for Christmas. How disappointing, dead on arrival. Does not even switch on. Wanted also to use wireless for my wife's Christmas present - ipod touch. How disappointing! This is the 2nd Apple item I've bought this year that was not up to par.

If the device died because of the same reason the others were recalled, then why would they refuse to offer the same service?
It's unfortunate that the device failed, but we're all end users...just like you.... and you are asking us to explain an Apple decision or policy. I'm sure you can understand why we cannot do that. Your question is for Apple.
Now my backup data is on the drive, however, so I don't want to sell it or toss it as is.
Have you considered having the Time Capsule repaired?. A good shop will replace the failed power supply capacitors with more robust components. Chances are, the drive is just fine and you'll have a fully functioning product again....better than the original.
The link below will provide some possibilities.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repairers
Does anyone here know if taking it to an Apple store for them to erase the drive would be an option, as I can't even power it up myself?
Your local Apple store may be able to provide you with the name of a servicer who could also repair the Time Capsule or erase the drive if you want to go that route.

  • First Gen 1TB Time Capsule dead

Just to let you guys know, my time capsule died; the fault was the power supply. I took it to the Apple store and they have ordered a new one to swap it. So if yours dies don't open it and try to fix it, just take it to the store. BTW mine was out of warranty so don't worry about time scale! Hope this helps.

This is standard Lion issue.. you need to reboot the TC..
Or use the 5.6 utility and go to the disk page and disconnect all users..
Apple did a really bad job of Lion networking and firmware updates to TC have not helped.

How can a company sell a Times Capsule appliance as a solution for backup and die for this manufacturing fault? And with that Apple? nothing, or technical assistance in Brasil. Of a sledgehammer, open the device and attempt to recover your files by force!???

  • Is my time capsule dead?

I have a time capsule bought less than a year back. I have all my data backed up on it. Today I had to reset my time capsule. After reset the airport utility is unable to detect my time capsule. It shows instead a apple wireless network. I have gone nuts trying to figure out what the problem is. It should be default show it as a time capsule it doesn't. I don't know what to do. Please help. I am really desperate. I had my macbook pro fail two days back and now my time capsule. Anyone please help.

If you reset your Time Capsule back to factory defaults, the default network on the Time Capsule is called Apple Network xxxxxx, where the "x" can be either a letter or number.
You need to reconfigure your Time Capsule again using AirPort Utility. Your backups are safe unless you specifically issued an "Erase" command to the Time Capsule disk in AirPort Utility.
Temporarily, connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to help AirPort Utility locate the Time Capsule. Once you have it reconfigured, you can disconnect the ethernet cable.

  • My time capsule is dead.  Serial number 6F0120ZEACD. Is there something to do?

Time capsule dead.  Something to do?

The the TC is in warranty, Apple will replace it for you.
If you have AppleCare in effect on one of your Macs, the TC may be covered if it is less than 3 years old.
If one of these conditions applies, take the TC to an Apple Store....if you have one near you....or contact Apple Support directly to start the process.
    http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
If the TC is out of warranty, Apple will offer no help on repairs, but there are some shops that can do this for you. Instructions for repairs are also included, so a local shop might be able to do this for your with the information provided by forum TC expert LaPastenague.  See the link below.

  • I am getting a time capsule error that the backup disk image can be accessed (error -1) - what does this mean?

When my time capsule tries to perform a back-up - i get the following error message.
The backup disk image "/volumes/data/myname's iMac.sparsebundle" could not be acccessed (error-1).
Is this something that can be resolved or is time capsule dead?

That error is caused by different reasons. Have a look at this Pondini's page > http://pondini.org/TM/C17.html

  • Time capsule stopped working after installing software update, no lights and reset did nothing.  What do I do?

I can't get my time capsule to turn on after a software update.  Reset button does nothing and it is pluged in to a live outlet. Is my time capsule dead?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Freepisces
I have all the latest updates on my Macs, and I have no problem at all.
If you applied the latest (7.4.1) QT update, your problem may be due to the fact that the System Requirements for QuickTime 7.4.1 for Tiger include Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later, and you show that you are using Mac OS X (10.4.3). You can check which QT version you have installed using the QuickTime Player > About QuickTime Player menu command.
If your QT version is an older one that is compatible with your Mac OS, and if you have not done so since you applied the QT update, repairing permissions may help you.
If the problem is somehow related to your iSight rather than to your QT software, Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight may help you identify and fix your problem.
Unless you have a compelling reason for not doing so, you should consider updating to the latest version of Tiger (10.4.11). To find out what improvements you are missing by staying with 10.4.3, see some of the "About the Mac OS X 10.4.xx Update" documents for updates later than 10.4.3. A couple of examples are:
    • About the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Update (combo) and
    • About the Mac OS X 10.4.11 Update
If you are interested, other "About..." documents are linked in this search list.
Because System Requirements for the latest combo applicable to your MacBook, Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (Intel), are for Mac OS X 10.4.4 or later, you will need at least two steps to upgrade from your Mac OS X (10.4.3), so pay careful attention to the System Requirements of any updates you plan to apply.

  • Time Capsule Died and Won't Restart

    Any advice?
My TC shut down unexpectedly and when trying to restart I get a static Orange light for about 45 seconds and then it shuts down again.
I can't seem to find any specific help for this any advice?

But there are many others.. type into google Time Capsule dead power supply. See the pain and angst..
If the TC is less than a year old Apple will replace it. If you have AppleCare on any computer, and the TC is less than 3years old, apple will replace it. Otherwise it is now dead.
Apple cannot fix it.. will not repair them.. but a bunch of people will.
We actually think it is a good idea gone wrong. And worth the trouble to fix properly.

I have NO status light on my Airport/Time Machine, I unplugged the internet connection from back of Airport and plugged directly into my MAC and am able to get to the internet just fine.
The Airport is almost 6 years old

Unfortunately, yes.  On the upside, your Time Capsule lasted about twice as long as normal.

  • How can I erase (or remove) the hard drive from a dead Time Capsule?

How can I erase (or remove) the hard drive from a dead Time Capsule?

I found this having had the same problem...
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=553818
Having removed the hard drive I'm finding I can't reformat it. I manage to mount the HD but Disk Utility crashes when trying to format (HD attached to Mac via Newer Tech. SATA cables to USB) and causes what I think is a kernal panic on my Mac which hard crashes. I see 3 partitions when attempting to mount one of which is AFP. Anyone got any ideas about how to do this? I've dug around but the only progress I've made is to note others have had to work around ACL's when replacing the logic board of the TC. Not sure if this even relates to the problem. However the tool for doing this seems to have been removed from SL. (Forum references to this procedure all relate to 10.5).

  • Data recovery on dead Time Capsule

My Time Capsule died and I have files on it that I don't have else where. The Time Capsule is still under waranty, but if I have someone recover the disk for me the waranty will be broken and then I won't get a new one from Apple. Does anyone know if Apple can perform data recovery on a dead Time Capsule AND give me a new one or repair the broken one?

    How old is the TC?
What model, A1xxx from the bottom if it?
Apple are telling people to store files on the TC so ring them up and say you were using it as you were told and now it is broken, what are they going to do?
They generally refuse to do more than swap to a new one.. the whole point of the TC is backup.. not file store.. so it has no way to backup and is considered a sealed unit.
What is dead btw? On a recent one, a dead hard disk is going to require some work to get files out of, if at all.
My advice would be to very carefully open the TC yourself and see if the TC works without the hard disk in it.. and plug the disk into a computer with usb to sata box.. you can get some recovery software if the disk does work.. otherwise it needs to go to a data centre. Then put it all back into the TC.. seal it up again.. and present it for replacement.. !!
