Time Capsule Degrades Wireless Internet Connection: Help?

Time Capsule Degrades Wireless Internet Connection: I am in FL using Brighthouse Cable as my internet provider (15MG down). The internet connection speed is slower than a dial up connection when wirelessly connected to my network to my Time Capsule. When I remove the Time Capsule and replace it with Brighthouses Netgear router the internet speed are normal (fast). Additionally, the internet speed is OK when I first hit a website, but the speed degrades rapidly as I access additional web pages. I no longer use my Time Capsule and therefore are not getting my back-up protection. (NOTE: I tried Verizon Fios and had the same problem.) Can anyone help?

Bought the time capsule in Oct 2013.  I have a Sagemcom 2864 modem from Bell but used through Teksavvy.  The 5 ghz has been flaky until I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 I think.  I had a closer look at it and it appears that the wifi is ok.  I was thrown off by the wifi symbol being all animated in the menu bar.  I was able to ping the time capsule via wifi.  All the status lights on the modem looked ok.  Next time it happens, I'll see if I can get some more details.  Do you know if there's anyway to get some logs from the airport utility?

can time capsule provide wireless internet service between two homes 100 feet apart?

OK.. starting to get the picture..
You should have run ethernet between the two buildings not cable.
Does the cable for the second building start inside your house.. ie do you have a termination for cable or does the second building come in directly from the street.
If you have cable link between the two buildings you can buy ethernet to cable adapters.. plug one it at each end and simply extend by plugging it into the router on the main cable link.. simple and far superior to wireless.
Otherwise you need to work out what kind of budget you want to spend to do this..
You can buy professional or semi-pro stuff from companies like ubiquiti which are far superior to domestic wireless link.. or if you want to do it on the cheap figure out what is the min speed you can live with.
I can give you instructions for using a pair of old airport.. in WDS.. or new ones.. but the new ones will cost far more and no gain.. you can usually pick up the old discus ones for $10 on ebay and they work great.
But don't try to do it without a link.. ie a specific set of AP in one house plus repeater in the other. As anything you do without making a link will just fall down or become unreliable.
You must have a pair of matched items.. You want to do this with WDS.. and you want something with good range. If you want N wireless that is fine.. but buy a pair of N wireless routers that can do WDS with full WPA2 security. eg full N wireless edimax stuff is not bad. TP-Link also not bad.. but if you want to run airplay and bonjour etc.. anything apple network then stick to apple. You will find that non-apple wireless routers will often not work with apple specific protocols.. as they are just that.. non-specified.

  • Time Capsule drops wifi/internet connection and flashes amber

Time Capsule drops wifi/internet connection and flashes amber.  I've tried unplugging it and my modem but it continues to do this every so often.  The time capsule is out in the open, so I don't think it's a heat issue.  It's running firmware 7.7.3.  Anyone else having this issue?  Any suggestions on how to fix it?  It's driving me crazy!

  • Using time capsule to share internet connection with a pc via ethernet

    Hi,
I've recently acquired a time capsule and was wondering if i could use it to share a wireless internet connection via ethernet to my non-wireless (windows 7) pc?
My current situation is that i have a wireless modem/router that shares my internet connection wirelessly with my mac mini.
I have a pc without a wireless card that i want to connect to the wireless network so i was wondering if it was possible to attach the pc and the time capsule with an ethernet cable, then connect the time capsule to the wireless network and share the internet connection with the pc.
Can anyone tell me if this is possible, and if so how?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the discussion area!
IF...your wireless network is now being created by another Apple "n" router like an AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express or Time Capsule, it would be possible to do what you want to do.
But the Time Capsule would not be compatible for what you want if your wireless is created by another manufacturer's router. The Time Capsule could "join" this wireless network so that backups would occur over wireless. However, when the Time Capsule is configured this way, the ethernet ports on the device are not active, so this would not help with the ethernet connection that your computer needs.
A new AirPort Express 802.11n would do what you want. It has the capability of joining virtually any wireless network and the ethernet port can be enabled using the ProxySTA feature, so it would work for your purpose.

  • MacBook Air + Time Capsule  frequently dropping internet connection

I too have been having frequently dropped wireless connections between my MacBook Air (MBA) and my Time Capsule(TC). My TC is connected to a cable modem and I also have an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) at a different part of my house which is used to extend my network connecting via ethernet to a PC running VISTA, and wirelessly to a printer and an older MacBook. I also connect wirelessly to my home network with two iPhones, a Squeezebox 3 with a server running on the PC. I have an Apple TV and a Squeezebox 2 connected to my TC via ethernet.
When my connection drops I will either see a Time Capsule disconnect message or if I am surfing the web, the browser just hangs. The wireless ICON strength is still pegged a the max level. None of my other devices (wireless or ethernet) connected to the TC or the other AEBS seem to drop their internet connections. I can re-establish the connection on my MBA by either turning off my MBA's Airport wireless and then turning it back on or by running the network diagnostics. The latter method usually shows green lights for all but the "Internet" and the "Server" which will have yellow lights. Usually when I select my wireless network and press continue, it will prompt for my WPA2 password which I have to reenter even though I always check the box for it to remember the password in the keychain.
After reading the various discussions on disconnect problems and trying the various "solutions" I was still having the disconnect problem.
Last night, I decided to turn off my Time Capsule and was then able to maintain an internet connection for considerably longer than before. Perhaps it was one of the other "solutions" that caused that. After turning my TC back on, the disconnect problem reoccurred within about 5 minutes.
Next, I did my too frequent Time Capsule remedy which was to disconnect the power and then reconnect the power. (Seems like some of these devices (APPLE TV included) could use power switches.) I then deleted the .sparsebundle backup file on the Time Capsule. I was then able to restart Time Capsule backup and things have been running uninterrupted for over 12 hours...still backing up (20GB in 12 hours? Doesn't seem very fast!). I can report back later if this actually "fixes" my disconnect problems in the future. I am dubious that it will.
I have several questions about the MBA and the TC/Time Machine backup operation.
1.) I often forget about the TC when I close the lid on my MBA and haul it off to work. At work (connecting via ethernet), I will eventually get a TC disconnect error. But I am wondering if there are points in the backup process where a random disconnect will cause some sort of TC corruption. What is the recommended way of handling this? Should I always stop the Time Machine backup before turning off my MBA? (A nuisance if so!)
2.) What is happening when the TC backup operation stops functioning and hangs up the MBA's internet connection? (I see lots of messages logged in the system log when this happens; but, of course, I don't have much of a clue of which ones are normal and which are not normal. I could send a copy of the logs when it happens next (I am assuming it will).
Also one other anecdote. A few months back, I had taken another AEBS to my work to use during a training conference. My MBA kept dropping its connection while the other PC laptops in the room maintained their connections...(very embarrassing!). Maybe one of the other "solutions" would have fixed the problem or maybe if I had just turned off my Time Machine backup it would not have disconnected. I will repeat that exercise when I get a chance now that I have some things to try.
It seems pretty clear to me from my own experiences and the discussion reports of others that the disconnect problem lies in the MBA's wireless internet connection software or the configuration of it. It seems like it is having difficulty recovering from various wireless connection "mishaps".

Folks, I was having a very similar problem for the last 6 months. My connection was fine until June 2008, after which my Macbook and my Time Capsule would constantly conflict. If I rebooted or reset the TC, or the MB, things would be fine for a few minutes or sometimes a few hours and the problem would recur soon thereafter. About a month ago, I had to do a clean reinstall and the problem vanished for about 5 days, after which it reappeared. My MB never had a problem at work, or at someone else's home or with other routers, only with TC. Apple sent me a new TC, then they replaced my Airport card but the situation did not change ... UNTIL ABOUT AN HOUR AGO.
An hour ago, I called Apple for the nth time in the last 6 months, and the rep heard me out (just like the previous n-1 reps). He then asked me to to System Preferences --> Accounts --> Login Items and asked if Real Player Downloader showed up in my list. Indeed it did. He asked me to remove it, and told me that Apple had just figured out that the Real Player downloader was recently found to be causing a drop in the connection between Macbooks and the TC (as well Airport Express).
The problem I've been having baffled everyone. All the previous reps, the guys at the Genius Bars, nobody had a clue. Joe (the rep I spoke with this morning) seemed very confident that the removal of the Real Player Downloader from the list of login items would resolve the problem. So far, so good. My connection seems solid (its only been an hour, but earlier it would drop after 5 minutes of use).
I hope my problem that (literally!) used up hundreds of hours of my time has been finally resolved. I hope this solution will work for at least some of you as well. What gives me hope is that this solution is logically consistent with the history of my problems. I probably first downloaded Real Player in June 2008. And when I did a clean install, I remember downloading Real Player a few days after the reinstall. So I'm pretty hopeful that my issue has been finally resolved.
Shame on Real Player for putting out a defective piece of software. And thank you Joe!

  • How do I set up the Time Capsule without an internet connection

How do I set up the Time Capsule as a wireless hard drive without an internet connection.   I am in a office situation in which I cannot access my work network.  I need to be able to share files on the Time Capsule over the wire connection.

Are you using a v6 uitlity.. because it is a toy.. ??
Get v5 utility and then you can hold down the option key and select the right mode.
If you have lion, just install it.. For ML follow this.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Accessing Time Capsule From Any Internet Connection

Could you please tell me if it will be possible to access Time Capsule from any internet. I would like to put all my files on the device and be able to access these while out on the road.
Thanks in advance for your help
    Cheers Steve

Yes, you certainly can (right now) remotely access the hard drive attached to your AEBSn. I will refer you to "Step 4" in Apple's article Sharing a USB hard disk on your network for instructions on enabling this feature. To access the disk remotely (and don't test this from a computer on your own LAN) select "Connect to Server" from the Finder's "Go" menu, and enter the public IP address of your Base Station.
I have to admit the specs for Time Capsule don't explicitly indicate that Time Capsule will support this feature. However, given this feature is available on the AEBSn and is easy to implement, I would be very surprised if Apple took away this feature when they designed Time Capsule.

  • Time Capsule crashing daily: internet connection loss

I recently bought a 1 TB Time Capsule and started using it as the primary router in the house. My wife and I have laptops (2006 MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo, MacBook Pro Unibody, Windows laptop) that use the connection.
What would happen is that my laptop (2006 MacBook Pro) and my Windows laptop would lose connection to the internet, but my wife's (Unibody MacBook Pro) would stay connected for awhile before losing the connection.
The Time Capsule, when it would get into this state, would show a green light. I can connect to the Time Capsule's wireless network ok, but I wouldn't be able to connect to the internet. When I try using the AirPort Utility, it can detect the Time Capsule, but it wouldn't be able to fetch the settings (the progress circle would spin endlessly).
If I unplug and plug the power cord back in, it works again, but I've had to do this once/twice a day. I shouldn't have to do this, though - does anyone have this problem? Any solutions?
I'm on the latest firmware (7.4.1).

Same problem here. Had to restart (tearing out the powercord...) the time capsule and my Airport Express everyday.
Just went back to 7.3.2. Apple has released major ******** with 7.4.1...

  • Problem with Airport wireless network utilising a Time Capsule. No internet connection?

Right, I have an Apple Mac and I am creating a Wireless network with an Apple Time Machine. I have had both devices for approx 2 years, they have be fine to date - until I now have the following issue: The Wirless network has been created and can be connected to but that network isn't then connected to the internet. IN have checked with the Cable network provider Virgin and there is a network without proplem provided to the Modem - I have also connected an ethernet cable to direct to the Mac and connected to the www, no probs. I have also asttempted to reset and set up my time capsule / airport again howver the same problem arises. When I go to network Diagnostics I Have a green light for the following; Airport, Airport Settigns, Network Settings,Network Settings, ISP then an amberlight for Internet and server.....Please assist!!!! Is this an ISP address issue. Welcome any help, Thanks in advance. Jimbob

    Sounds like chaos..
How many outlets are we talking about and what specific equipment?
Do you really need routers on every one? How many clients do you use?
Basically there are three non-overlapping channels on 2.4ghz.. using more than three routers in the house is pointless as they will just interfere with each other.. range on 2.4ghz should be sufficient to reach at least half a normal house from one AP. If not there are better high power routers available.
And there should be just one device that is the main router.. all the other routers should be bridged/ wan bypassed so they are merely AP and switch. Otherwise NAT will cause issues to devices stuck behind a secondary router.

  • How to connect airport time capsule through wireless internet

Just purchased an Airport Time Capsule but having trouble to connect it through my Macbook Air using wireless. Could you please help? many thanks

Make sure the MBA has ipv6 set to link-local only for wireless.
I strongly recommend using short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    eg TCgen5 and TCwifi
In fact if you keep having wireless issues.. with the MBA in the same room as the TC, change the wireless name to TC24ghz and TC5ghz so you have different names for both bands and see if that doesn't help.. try to connect to this band and then the other.
Use WPA2 personal security.. password 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
Do not hide the wireless.. that is against the code and simply leads to issues.
If you still have issues.. post back.. does the MBA work ok on other routers or wireless access points??

  • How do I setup my time capsule with wireless internet?

I I have "Clear" so theres no place on the device to plug up an ethernet cord.. PLEASE HELP!!!! Would like to use the time capsule mainly as an external hard drive. PLEASE HELP!!!

For factory reset.. what model do you have??
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    Factory reset Gen 5
Hold in reset for about 5sec until the status light flashes quickly.
If your AirPort Time Capsule still doesn’t respond, do a similar reset to the Gen1-4.
Unplug your AirPort Time Capsule .. hold in reset and power the TC back on.. without releasing the reset.. wait until status led flashes rapidly.
To join a wireless network and assuming you are using a Mac with v6 utility..
    1. Full reset of the TC. as above.
    2. Open the airport utility.. the Mac must have internet connection to the wireless router which is working.
Click on other wi-fi devices which is your reset TC.
    3. The utility will choose the wrong item. You are not creating a network.. so click options.
    4. Click add to existing network.
    5. Make sure you then get the right network.. this is from my main router.
    6. The utility will then use join. Fix the name to short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric .. for better networking.
    7. The utility should complete the setup.. and you will probably need to fix a few things.. passwords or other errors fix them all up.
    8. You can now click edit and go the wireless tab and see the details.
This will give you extremely slow speeds.. it is highly NOT recommended.

  • Using Time Capsule without an internet connection

    Hi,
I've searched everywhere for a definitive answer to my question, but haven't been able to find it. Can anyone help me with this?
I've got a new MacBook, and a now-full 320GB external HDD full of movies and music. However, I'm working overseas and don't want to commit to an internet subscription at home. The question I'd like to ask is hopefully quite simple:
Can I use a Time Capsule as an external HDD to store my iTunes library (no backing-up at all), wirelessly, without an internet subscription?
I don't want to have to plug my MacBook into anything, but I still want to access my movies etc. Is this possible?
Furthermore, I'm thinking of getting an Apple TV further down the line, and hooking it into my Time Capsule-based network. Can I then stream my iTunes library to my Apple TV, with or without my MacBook turned on?
    Thanks

    Hogeyhogeybear, welcome to the discussions!
"Can I use a Time Capsule as an external HDD to store my iTunes library (no backing-up at all), wirelessly, without an internet subscription?"
    Yes
"I don't want to have to plug my MacBook into anything, but I still want to access my movies etc. Is this possible?"
    Yes
"Furthermore, I'm thinking of getting an Apple TV further down the line, and hooking it into my Time Capsule-based network. Can I then stream my iTunes library to my Apple TV, with or without my MacBook turned on?"
    Yes.
When you set up the Time Capsule, you will create a wireless network, choose security settings, etc., but will skip the internet set up portion. You will get 2-3 error messages stating that you will not be connected to the internet once the Time Capsule is updated with your settings, but you can just ignore them.

  • Time Capsule and an Internet connection

I was getting an error with TC with regards to backing it up.  I tried to reset the TC back to factory settings I bought this TC from Apple in 2009,  Once I did that, I now no-longer have access to the Internet with the TC. It has a sold yellow light and my computer dosn't recognize it.  can someone please help?????  I was able to hook up a non TC router and it worked fine with no trouble.  I am not sure if loading Maverick had any issues with this?

    Hi, Under Water.
You should configure the Express to "Join a wireless network" or to "Extend a wireless network". (Either one will work.)
Connect your computer to your Express via Ethernet and open AirPort Utility. Press "Manual Setup" and authenticate if necessary.
Go to the "Base Station" tab. Give the Express a name and password.
Go to the "Wireless" tab. Set the Wireless mode to "Join a wireless network" or "Extend a wireless network." Enter the name of the wireless network created by your Time Capsule (or select it from the list). Check the box that says "Allow Ethernet clients" (if you're joining) or "Allow Wireless Clients" (if you're extending).
Provide the appropriate security mode and password for the Time Capsule's network.
Press "Update" and allow your Express to restart.
Then you can plug the solar system into the Express's Ethernet port.

  • Time Capsule Dropping Wifi/Internet Connection

My 2 TB 2013 Airport Time Capsule has been dropping signal the last several days. I have tried all of the troubleshooting but nothing has solved the problem. I payed over $300.00 for this and its not proving to have been a very good investment. Has anyone else had this issue and solved it?
To be clear all of my devices stil pickup the Airport Time Machine but are either unable to connect or are connected but without internet access. The machine works fine some times and other times it messes up again.

    The setup is wrong..
Thanks for the screen shot.. that indeed answered my question.
You see the LAN IP is your public IP.. this is wrong. The TC is either bridged or set to static IP.
But it has to be working as the main router of the network.
The reason you are having trouble is the ISP only will pass one IP and the first device to turn on captures it. The rest will have wireless without internet.
So start over.. make sure the TC is in router mode.. the best way is simply do a factory reset and start again. Go into the manual setup of the TC if the automated setup put you in this situation.
Make sure internet is set to dhcp.
And make sure the Network tab is set to DHCP and NAT
You might need to power cycle the cable modem.. this can take 20min off time.. and sometimes more.. for it to correctly allocate the public IP to the TC.
In the new setup.. change your names to short (2-20 characters), no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Your list in the first post includes windows devices.. and the current name is not SMB compatible.
Wireless names should also follow suit. JWD as shortened form of the TC name.
    JWD24ghz for the 2.4ghz name
    JWD5ghz for the 5ghz name..
Just while you have issues.. set names to both bands.. so you can pick and choose.. again works better on non-apple stuff. And you can also try fixing wireless channels which also can help.
For 2.4ghz wireless there are only three non-overlapping.. 11, 6, 1 which I list in backwards order because that is the best way to try them..
For 5ghz.. a low channels.. 36-44 pick whatever.. and a high channel >100..
    Post your results.

  • Time capsule not recognizing internet connection

My Time Capsule is not recognizing the intenet connection from my isp.  It is directly connected to my Comcast router.  I can connect wirelessly to the Comcast router, but when I successfully connect to the TC, the airport utility shows that the internet connection is down.  I have rebooted both the ISP router as well as the TC.  is there help out there?
    thanks,

I just rebooted both devices again at the same time rather than one after the other.  It seems to have fixed my problem.
